TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

What a night of racing here at headquarters tonight.  We have four

fantastic heats of the Schweppes SA Derby, the Group 3 Final of the Coffex Coffee SA Oaks and a terrific supporting programme.

Kick off in race 1 with the outstanding sprinter Hopes Up.  She is in fine form as usual and is boxed to lead and win the opening event.  Cousin Callum will be rattling home to run into the placing’s along with Allen Illem and the pacey Fire Tyson.  Box Up 1-2-3-7.

Race 2 looks like a very good betting affair.  I have gone for the Victorian sprinter in Magic Muzzle who is in the Mark Grima kennel, which is on fire of late.  She has only had a handful of starts and looks the one to beat.  Add in Young Snozz who will be running on and Carlos Tyson who won here last week.  Box Up 1-3-5-7.

The Distance race is an interesting affair with the clash of Mimicking and local champ Kalden Mayhem.  Both have different racing styles.  Dyna Aline will run a very cheeky race along with the Tasmanian performer in Camdale Buddy.  Box up 1-2-4-8.

Race 4 and this is the 1st heat of the Derby.  What a race this is if you go on form.  There are two dogs that have picket fences beside their name and they are Front Knocka and Kiss Me Ketut.  I have tipped the latter.  Hawk Alone is boxed for a bold showing down in box 1 and was a terrific run here last week when 2nd behind Hopes Up.  Box Up 1-2-3-7.

2nd Heat of the Derby is race 5 and this time I have gone the other way.  Recent form doesn’t matter (confusing) Crump in Box 4 for Troy Iwanyk.  He has been out of sorts of late but has won 12 from 24 along with 6 placing’s and tonight he can return to the winners circle.  Tonk and Dyna Hakon along with the outstanding local hope Ernie Bung Arrow who carved out a slick 29.57 win here last week, are all chances.  Box Up 1-4-6-7.

Race 6 is the most open of the four Derby heats and there looks to be several chances.  I have tipped a NSW performer in Awesome Project from box 3.  He has been in the money in 11 of 14 and is more than capable of leading here.  Add in the in-form Hellyeah Bolt and the pacey Kalden Gambino.  Box Up 3-5-6-7.

Race 7 and the smart Tomac Bale is the measuring stick here in the final heat of the Derby and was a last start 2nd in the National Sprint Final.  He has 11 wins and a placing from his 18 starts and should win despite the draw of 4.  Paul Hili has crossed the Tasman with Hellyeah Missile and he has very good credentials, and the rails draw is a bonus.  Kalden Kapone has been hit and miss of late but is smart on his night.  Box Up 1-2-4-8.

Race 8 is the Group 3 Coffex Coffee Oaks Final and what a terrific event this is.  The stand out run of last week was Kokoda Spirit who jumped straight to the front and carved out a BON 29.68.  The Knocka Norris/Flaming Doll sprinter loves the Angle Park circuit and will prove very hard to beat on last weeks run.  The BIG danger is Xylia Allen who walked out of the boxes and carved her way through the field to run 2nd beaten 6L.  She is the improver but box manners are the worry.  Kennel mate Purcell Bale keeps on winning and won from this draw last week.  Box Up 2-5-6-7.

Race 9 and we are back to the locals and the Robyn Mackellar Dee Dee Corsair has drawn well to lead and win.  He should be able to kick up early and hold the lead.  Fair Change is a favourite of mine and has drawn well down in box 1, along with the pacey Well Quoted who has been racing well in easier company.  Box up 1-3-6-5.

Race 10 there looks to be several chances here but I like Guru Doll who was a reserve in the Oaks Final.  She was a good even run last week when 3rd behind Iona Seven and will only improve.  Box up 1-2-7-8.

The final event on the program and the Tony Lagana Tyson Willow is boxed to win from the 7.  She has broken 30 here in the past and should send us home on a winning note.  Box Up 2-3-4-7.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

COFFEX COFFEE OAKS FINAL

Last week at Angle Park we saw four enthralling heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks where the first two placegetters from each heat qualified for tonights Group 3 final. The fastest qualifier for the final was the Mark Morrissey trained Victorian Kokoda Spirit who led throughout from box 6 in the final heat of the night to record a slick 29.68 for the 515m journey defeating series favourite Xylia Allen for trainer Graeme Bate.

The $35,000 Group Three Final will be race 8 on tonights program and is listed to jump at 9.11pm (SA time).

SCHWEPPES DERBY HEATS

If you thought last week’s heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks leading into tonight’s Group 3 final was exciting and produced ultra-competitive racing then tonight’s heats of the Coca Cola Derby looks just as enthralling. We had 35 greyhounds nominate for the Derby which is slightly up from last year and the quality is just outstanding. The anticipation will be electric as some of the best young local sprinters do battle with greyhounds from WA, Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

The equation is simple with the first two from each heat qualifying for next week’s $35,000 Group 3 Final with the two fastest third placegetters being declared reserves. The box draw for the final will take place after the running of race 9 on course tonight.

Tonights program also features an outstanding distance race (race 3 7.25pm) which features local champ Kalden Mayhem against Victorian Mimicking for trainer Rob Britton and Hope’s Up in race 1 for Cameron Butcher will look to win another race after drawing the red and lay her claims as the best chance for SA in next months Group 1 Adelaide Cup Series.

CHASING THE GOLDEN BONE TIPPING COMPETITION

It’s a tight competition at the top in the Chasing The Golden Bone competition. Tonight is the final week of selections so if someone can tip the 11 winners tonight they deserve to win the major prize. The reward at the end for the winning team is a greyhound to race for 12 months on their behalf.

GRSA is very excited that Robyn Mackellar will be the winning teams trainer and there is a chance that the winning teams greyhound will kick of their career for them on Monday night at Angle Park.

Kennel name “Hades” ready to go Monday night.

Good luck and good tipping for tonight’s final round.

PORT AUGUSTA ON SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER

The Port Augusta meeting scheduled for this weekend was postponed due to local football finals and has now been moved to Saturday 28th September. The meeting will feature the Sky Tavern Oaks an Derby races for greyhounds whelped on or after 1/7/11.

Nominations close at 9.00am with GRSA on Tuesday 24th September

BOOKMAKER PETER DAMARELL BACK ON WEDNESDAYS FROM SEPTEMBER 18

As from Wednesday 18th September 2013, Bookmaker Peter Damarell will be the on-course bookmaker betting competitive fixed odd markets on the full programme at Angle Park. These meetings are now covered on Sky Racing 1 providing extra exposure to the Industry. In addition GRSA has organised for Peter to display all bookmaker prices from the thoroughbred meetings in South Australia and the meetings in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This is a major coup for GRSA  and South Australian punters as there will now be no need to make the long drive to Gawler, Balaklava, Murray Bridge or Strathalbyn as the very same bookmakers prices will be available right here at Angle Park every Wednesday. Punters can enjoy the comfort of the Angle Park betting auditorium and it’s free to get in. No more hot or cold old betting rings after a long drive. Why not give it a try? Please tell your thoroughbred friends about this outstanding opportunity. Save your entry fee and petrol and participate in the opportunity to win a free $50 betting voucher with Peter Damarell’s compliments.

GAWLER TRIALS– OFFICE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS
Due to staffing issues for the next couple of weeks the Office for the Gawler trials on Wednesday’s will be closed. Scott Volbrecht will take the money for the trials at the boxes in the short term until a decision is made regarding the future of the Gawler office. Please have the correct money available to assist the race night staff. Race fields will still be available oncourse.

NEW BOOKING NUMBER FOR TRIALS
Since the introduction of the new phone system and the alteration of no menu options participants have had to ring the 8243 7100 number to book trials.  This number rings on all incoming lines and congests the phone system thus causes frustration with participants and ties up all of the GRSA phone lines.

Therefore, starting from Monday 23rd September participants who wish to book trials will have to ring 8243 7172. This phone line will only be used for trial bookings and will queue participants.  By having this one number with participants queuing makes this process to be a more efficient way of booking trials.  Next week our staff will be advising participants when they book that from 23rd September they will have to book trials using the new number.  There will be NO trials accepted through the normal administration number.  To be fair to everyone GRSA will only accept bookings using the new number.

Please make yourself aware of the new number for booking trials.
