TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Tonight we have a very even 11 event card and we can kick off with a couple of early winners that will be very short.  If you followed me last week we tipped 7 pick 4’s.

Race 1 and the Peter Hurley trained Pandora Kist is in outstanding form and from box 1 will prove far too strong in a grade 5 event.  She won here last start in a slick 29.97 and it should only be by how far.  Box up 1-2-4-6 with the 1 dog as the stand out.

How good is this dog Ernie Bung Arrow in race 2!!  He is a winner of 8 from 8 and his early pace is terrific.  You will need to be related to the Packer family to have a wager.  Box up 1-2-3-7 and the 1 dog as the stand out.

Race 3 and this is more interesting with several chances.  I have tipped Long Gully Bill because of his draw.  He isn’t overly quick early but is strong.  Arctic Tyson is pacey and has good short course form and will be right in the mix.  Add inTricky Nigel for the trifecta.  Box up 2-4-7-8.

The Jovanovic kennel rarely leaves the track without a winner and Russian Fighter is racing well and box 6 shouldn’t be a worry in race 4.  He is more than capable of crossing early and pinch this.  The main dangers look to be Senni Tony and Life’s Cool.  Box up 3-4-5-6.

Race 5 is a 600m event and it is a mixture of sprinters and stayers.  I have gone for a stayer in Prince Holyfield from the rails draw.  He is a run on type and only needs to lob close early to have a big say.  Keep your eye out for the out of form Significant Bit, she is more than capable of surprising.  Box up 1-2-4-6.

Race 6 is an interesting race as there looks to be several chances.  Dolmar is well drawn and has been racing well.  He ran second behind a smart one in Galilee Spirit here last week from box 2.  He should be able to crack it tonight and break through.  Add Paua Is Lethal and Fiery McBain in for the minors.  Box up 2-3-5-7.

Race 7 and there are a couple of in form runners in Allen Illem and Encosta Kahn.  Both have early pace and they are the ones to beat.  Right Time is very smart when on the bunny and Cousin Callum will be rattling home late.  Box up 1-2-4-6-8.

Race 8 and this looks a dart job with three main chances.  They are 1-2 & 7, jump on Benchmark in the Petar Jovanovic kennel.  He should get the early sit and prove too strong.  Smokey Assassin can lead from box 1 and Tercel is dropping back to the sprint after a couple of wins over the 600m.  Box up 1-2-6-7.

The 731m is a 6 dog affair and Allen Bardolf has his paw on the till, but if he wants to open it it’s another thing.  Uno Lesson stormed home late last week to win in very similar company.  Add Miss Woods in who is slowly getting back to her best.  Box up 1-2-5-7.

Race 10 and Kalden Kapone needs to improve his box manners to win tonight.  He rattled home late to run third at Gawler last start and has had good form here in the past.  Almighty Titan and Umika Bale can run into the top three.  Sky Kahn can surprise at good odds.   Box up 3-4-6-7.

On a very tough night we can go home on a winner in race 11 with Avatar Kist.  The draw of 2 is a big help and she was a smart winner at Gawler last start.  Box up 1-2-4-6.

Good luck and happy punting!!

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A bar owner locked up his place at 2am and went home to sleep. He had been in bed only a few minutes when the phone rang. “What time do you open up in the morning?” he heard an obviously inebriated man inquire.
The owner was so furious, he slammed down the receiver and went back to bed. A few minutes later there was another call and he heard the same voice ask the same question. “Listen, the owner shouted, “there’s no sense in asking me what time I open because I wouldn’t let a person in your condition in—“
“I don’t want to get in,” the caller interjected. “I want to get out.”

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE MEADOWS THIS SATURDAY

After the running of the National State Finals Thursday week ago both Hope’s Up for Cameron Butcher and Kaldem Mayhem will take on the best in the land representing SA at the Meadows on Saturday night in the National Sprint Championship and National Distance Championship Finals respectively.

Only the best greyhounds from each State have made it through to Saturday night all chasing Group 1 glory and the winner’s purse of $75,000.

Hope’s Up has drawn box 4 and does look to have the job ahead of her. She trialled only fairly last week at the Meadows in 30.40 however she has proven herself to be a top class race performer highlighted by her scintillating win in last years Group 3 SA Oaks.  With a nice beginning she can put herself right in the firing line and who knows what might happen on the first turn. She is up against a  high quality field including Victorian stars Tomac Bale, Xylia Allen and Paw Licking with exciting New South Wales chaser Zulu Zeus all the top fancies.

The daughter of El Galo and Little Looper has been quoted at $26.00 in early markets and rated one of the outsiders but no doubt she will be giving her all for SA and her connections in the Group 1 feature.

We are also at double figure odds in the Distance Final with seasoned campaigner Kalden Mayhem quoted at $10.00 which seems nice odds for a greyhound who has proven himself at Group level over a long period highlighted by a placing in the National final two years ago at Albion Park.

The Troy Murray trained stayer is a champion of South Australia and will definitely be charging home at the business end and could be the blow out dog. The son of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold will be shooting for his 58th win but will have to overcome star stayers like Victorian Destini Fireball and emerging NSW talent Smart Valentino.

Good luck to all runners in Saturday nights National Finals especially the South Aussies and hopefully SA can take out the titles which haven’t been won since 1993 for the Sprint with Casino Tom and 2006 for the Distance with Bothing.

AGRA Neil Brown has compiled a comprehensive preview of the National Finals which we have included on the GRSA website at www.grsa.com.au .

COFFEX COFFEE OAKS HEATS UP WITH DERBY TO FOLLOW

The Coffex Coffee Oaks series kicked off yesterday with two SA Preludes at Angle Park. The first three greyhounds in each prelude automatically qualified for the Oaks heats on Thursday 5th September however all greyhounds are able to be nominated for the series. In wet conditions the experienced Fair Change for Todd Kelly won the first prelude in a handy 30.52 defeating Oogaboo Oz and Emerley Seniorita and then in prelude 2 Wiregrass for Ben Rawlings was impressive in leading throughout to defeat Hilltop Snow and Annie Walker in 30.55.

OAKS TRIALS ON MONDAY NIGHT

Justin King from NSW will be trialing a couple of his nice greyhounds on Monday night in preparation for next months Group 3 Coffex Coffee Oaks.  The oncourse patrons will be able to see the exciting Flaming Frenzy and handy Miss Pugs who should be trialing before the first and in between races 1 & 2. Flaming Frenzy has won 5 from 19 starts with 8 placings and was very impressive last start winning at Wentworth Park in a flying 29.91. Miss Pugs doesn’t have the same record as Flaming Frenzy having won just the 2 from 15 starts with 3 placings but it will be interesting to see her time compared to her kennel mate.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AT STRATHALBYN

The 46th Annual General Meeting of the Southern Greyhound Raceway will be held on Wednesday 28th August at 7.00pm in the Strathalbyn Harness Racing Clubs sponsors room at Milnes Road Strathalbyn followed by a light supper.

GAWLER SHOW DATES

August means that it is coming up to Gawler Show time, so a couple of weeks racing at Gawler will be transferred to Angle Park this year.

This year the Annual Gawler Show will be held on the weekend of Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. Racing on Tuesday 27th August and Tuesday 3rd September will be at Angle Park. These will be Angle Park Provincial (APD) fixtures with normal Tuesday prizemoney. Racing on Friday 30th August will be at Mount Gambier.

Trials will be cancelled at Gawler on Wednesday 28th August and Thursday 29th August. We will hopefully have the track ready to trial again on Wednesday 4th September, but this will be dependent on the weather over the show weekend. There will be no Qualifying Trials at Gawler on Wednesday 21st August, as the following Tuesday is at Angle Park. There will be trials as per normal at Angle Park on Tuesday 27th August and Saturday 31st August.
