TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

In recent weeks, we have had a couple of features over the sprint but tonight venture to race 8 on the programme the Shane McQueen final over the 600m, there certainly looks to be plenty of chances and it will make for a very interesting betting race. The kennel to follow for the night is the Nicole Newlyn team as she has 4 runners throughout the evening and they all have a chance.

Race 1 - There is a newcomer back from over the border in this and that is Jacqui Blax out in box 6, she hasn’t raced since late March but had terrific form prior, she will certainly be well tried on her South Australian return. Egyptian Diva has been racing well and has a good turn of early pace so she is a must for Trifecta punters. Box Up 3.5.6.8.

Race 2 - Nicole Newlyn can get her 1st winner of the night with Communication from box 1, he has been knocking on the door in recent weeks and is drawn for a bold showing in this. Hollow Point can improve and add in Edison Bale for value. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 3 - The 1st of the Auction events and the inform Aston Hinkley looks the one to beat in this, he was a last start winner here from box 4 and has the early pace to cross from out wide. The Gavin Harris duo in Springvale Carla and Springvale Hope can fill the placings. Box Up 1.3.4.6.

Race 4 - Blaxland hasn’t missed a cheque in his last 5 starts here and his early dash makes him our top pick. Aston Chelsea has only had the 1 start for a win over the short at Gawler so she is worth putting in the Trifecta, add Kung Fu Mary who looks the likely improver. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 5 - This looks a good betting race as there are several chances, I liked the run of Usain’s Squeeze here last week in the Howard Ashton final, she flew home late along the rails to run a very good 3rd. Buzz Box and Dorsal are the others who will be right in the mix. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 6 - Its very hard to go past On Fire on his latest form, he has won his last 6 here at headquarters and his win last week was enormous. Cairnlea Kenny can kick up early as will Striker Klinsman but they will need to hold off the powerful finish of On Fire. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 7 - I like one in this at Each Way odds in Allen Portland, he is a moderate beginner and will be doing his best work over the last 100m. Alpha Alexander found trouble here last start and is sure to run a bold race from his rails draw, add Paddy McBain who has been racing well of late. Box Up the inside brigade. 1.2.3.4

Race 8 - This is the Shane McQueen final over the 600m and a very good one at that as there are plenty of chances after last week’s heats. I will stick with the Cameron Butcher team with Purpose Driven, she never gave up here last week from box 8 when a really good 2nd behind Zipping Zeus, both of these runners will be in the finish again. Add Springvale Bryne for value Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 9 - Janice Jones has her team up and going so her smart performer in High Eden Frost should be able to bounce back into the winners’ circle despite his draw of 5. Allen Terminator is another who has been in form and from the rails draw will be right in the mix. Huayra out in box 8 is more than capable on his night but continues to hurt the old wallet. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 10 - Regal Looper looked a big chance here last week when a very good 2nd behind the old fellow Gun McBain, he will be swooping again from his wide draw so we will put him on top. Cut Loose Max is the likely improver but he needs to improve his box manners. Lady Xanthe has been struggling from poor draws of late but should be running on from her rails draw. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 11 - We tipped him last week and that is Forlano he led early and was run down to finish 4th he should find this more to his liking and bounce back. Slippers Wish is quick early and don’t be surprised if he happened to pinch this. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 12 - Tough race to go home on so let’s hope we are well in front, the main chances look to be Bogie Miracle down in box 2 and Mauricio out in box 7, both have been racing consistently. Royal Bling has pace and can figure in the trifecta. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

GUN MCBAIN STILL SHOOTING FOR NATIONAL RECORD

Recently we highlighted that Gun McBain was getting closer to a National record of most TAB wins however on further investigation it has been confirmed that he needs to win a few more races to claim that record.

It was suggested that Major Blaze from the early 2000’s had the record at 61 wins which Gun Mcbain leveled last Thursday night however it has been confirmed that the record is held by Just Proper at 65 wins who raced in Darwin a few years back.

SA’s Iron dog Gun McBain has already taken his wins to 62 after winning over 388m yesterday at Angle Park and regardless if he gets there or not he has been a super greyhound for connections and the local industry.

Current table of most wins that can be confirmed (Non TAB and TAB since 2000)

Saltwater Pete – 74 wins mainly in Queensland (TAB and Non TAB)
Little Mother – 74 wins 2009-2012 all NZ form (assumed TAB)
Bright Star – 72 wins 2012-2016 all NZ form (assumed TAB)
Just Proper – 65 wins 2012-2015 in Darwin (TAB)
Stagger – 64 wins (TAB)
Green Lizard - 64 wins (TAB and Non TAB)
Dixie Lee – 63 wins 2011-2014 all NZ form (assumed TAB)
Wheelchair Norm – 63 wins 2014-current all NZ form (assumed TAB)
Gun McBain – 62 wins (TAB)

LICENSE RENEWALS DUE ON 30TH JUNE 2017

Please be advised that your license renewal will be due on Friday 30th June 2017. We have sent out renewals to those requiring to update their license.

Please check your license card to confirm the expiry date.

With the date being the 30th June it is vital that you license before the cut of time to ensure no greyhounds will miss a run. As an example it you are nominating for any race meeting in July  you would want to have renewed by Friday 23rd June to guarantee no issues.

Check with Owners locally and from Interstate as this has been an issue in recent years and get the licenses renewed well and truly before June 30.

Please contact the GRSA Integrity Department for queries or questions.

GAWLER BREEDERS 2017 MOVED TO JULY 16 AND 23

After the Howard Ashton Final the final race in the Breeders 2017 pay up series is the Gawler Breeders 2017 in June.

However due to the cross over with the Auction Final GRSA has decided to move this series back into July to avoid a clash. The series was to be run on Sunday 11th and 18th June however this will now be conducted on Sunday 16th and 23rd July. This avoids the Auction and Gawler Produce series.

EXTRA PRIZEMONEY FOR PORT AUGUSTA CUP MEETINGS – NOMS FOR CUP HEATS CLOSE TUESDAY 13th JUNE

The Port Augusta Greyhound Racing Club has advised that there will be $100 extra added to each race (excluding Cup Final) for meetings on 17th June (Cup Heats) and 1st July (Cup final). The Cup final will be worth $3,000 total prizemoney on 1st July.

* Nominations will close for Cup Heats with GRSA on Tuesday 13th June at 9.00am.

FUTURITY PAYMENTS DUE THIS MONTH

Owners of SA Bred greyhounds are reminded that the next batch of Futurity payments are due on Friday 23rd June 2017. There will be three series for which payments will need to be made.

The payments due are:

Classic 2017 – Final Payment Pups Born July 15 to Dec 15

This payment is for greyhounds for which the first two Sustaining Payments have been made. The Final Payment is $121 per greyhound.

Breeders 2018 – Second Payment - Pups Born Jan 16 to June 16

This payment is for greyhounds for which the first Sustaining Payment or a “one-off” Final payment was made last December. The Second Sustaining Payment is $55 per pup or a Final Payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

Classic 2018 – First Payment - Pups Born July 16 to Dec 16

Finally the First Payment is due for Classic 2018. All SA Bred greyhounds born in the above period are eligible to make this payment. The First Payment is $27.50 per pup or a “one-off” Final payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

To assist all owners of Futurity eligible pups, reminders have been posted. It is perhaps a good idea to make the payment as soon as you can, so it doesn’t slip your mind and the closing date passes. If you have sold a pup/s we would ask if you can either forward on the information or let Caralyn Fielden know at GRSA and she can follow it up. If you haven’t received a reminder and you think you should have, contact us asap.

TIME GRADING UPDATE

GRSA has been working at achieving some of the outcomes from the recent Grading Review Panel meeting held on 28th April 2017. Some items like cascading reserves need to be implemented by Ozchase however some do not.

We will be able to include greyhounds with 0 – 2 starts so every greyhound nominated will be eligible for consideration. The table below details the rating for 0-2 start greyhounds -

“A greyhound with 0 starts will be given a rating of 10 as a starting point. At its second start it will have the average of 10 and its first start. At its third start, it will be the average of the 2 lowest ratings, including the base rating of 10. ie if had 12, 12 from 2 starts, it will be 10 + 12 / 2 = 11”

For “Best to Worst” Time Grading (next meeting Monday 19th June) we will be able to include higher graded greyhounds into mixed events if there are insufficient nominations for a single race. The conditions of this are listed below -

“A Grade 4 can be mixed with a Grade 5 however a Grade 3 will not unless there is also a Grade 4 greyhound selected for that time graded race”

GRSA has also started to program some category Time Grading meetings. These meetings are for greyhounds that are Maidens, 1 – 4 wins and 5 plus wins all time graded “lowest to highest”. Please refer to the All Tracks calendars for details.

GOTBA NEWS

After consultation with the GOTBA some of their races have reverted back to 8 dog events rather than all 4 dog events as was conducted for their first two meetings.

With the Club receiving strong nominations the below criteria has been agreed for their meetings –

  • Juvenile, Juvenile/Maidens and Maidens (that have not won on the circle will all be graded as 4 dog events). This will protect the more inexperienced greyhounds.
  • Maidens (that have won 1 or more races on the circle), Novice, 1 stake, open etc will be graded as 8 dog events

This is all still dependent upon nominations received. The club will run 16 dog events for the Waterloo Cup, Oaks and Derby as per normal, depending upon nominations.

The GOTBA’s next meeting will be on Sunday 11th June.
