TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight’s 11 event programme looks very open so we will concentrate very hard on the trifectas and first fours as there looks to be value throughout the night, the 600m is one we can have a crack at which is race 5 on the card as there are a heap of chances in that event. Remember the guaranteed trifecta pool of $10,000 for race 1 tonight.

Race 1 - The old fellow gets his chance to win again over the 515m here tonight and that is Gun McBain. He looked the winner here last week only to be run down in the final stages by Wheel Spinner, they ran the quinella last week and can nearly do it again tonight. Add Rip It Ralph for value. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 2 - This is a wide-open affair but we will stick with the Ben Rawlings trained pair in Minacious and Superbious, both have been around the placings of late and look a chance to break their maiden. The newcomer in Jean Genie could surprise 1st up at big value. Box Up 3.4.6.8.

Race 3 - The Robyn Mackellar kennel has been in form of late and she has a handy one in Emerley Nolen out in box 7, he flew home late to run a very good 3rd here last start after finding early trouble and will give this a big shake.  Just Ruby can be hit and miss but is worth putting in the first four, Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 4 - Dyna Keitaro will find this a lot easier than his past couple but he needs to improve his box manners as he has been struggling to keep up early, he will be flying home late and can’t be left out. Disaaci is drawn for a bold showing and has the pace to be right in the finish. Box Up 1.3.5.7

Race 5 - This is the 600m of the night and I like one in this at each way odds in Sutton Steele out in box 7, he looks the likely leader and with luck might be able to pinch this. Bamba Lam Barney was very disappointing here last start but is a lot better than that run suggest and will be the big improver. Add  in Zero Knockin’ who loves this trip. Box Up 3.5.6.7.

Race 6 - I like the inside brigade here but think Sketchy Gun can salute as he has the pace to jump to the front. Rock Away is back in grade and will add the value for our first four. Heading My Way is better than her past couple and is a chance of causing an upset. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 7 - On Fire returned to Angle Park and missed the kick but flew late to run 2nd behind the inform High Eden Frost in 29.73, he will bounce back and make it 30 career wins tonight. Marlow Brown has been setting the pace in his last 5 and is sure to run a very bold race again. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 8 - The Jovanovic kennel can quinella this event with Cairnlea Kenny and Cairnlea Ollie, both have terrific early pace and should be put in the trifecta. We tipped Windmill Haze here last week and he flew home to get up in the last bound at good odds so he is a must again for the trifecta on that effort .Box Up 2.5.6.7.

Race 9 - Winning form is good form and Lupe Fiasco has won 3 of his last 5 all in good fashion and from box 1 will be the measuring stick for mine. Shores Girl has been the improver in recent runs and will run a cheeky race. Box Up 1.5.6.8.

Race 10 - Long Gully Pete loves a wide draw and should run a bold race once again from his draw of 7, he led through out to score here last week and we will make him our top pick in this. Dawning Hope will find this a lot easier than his last start and the inside draw will help his chances. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 11 and we can go home on a winning note again with the well performed Reelin’ down in box 1, he won here 3 starts back in a handy 30.25 and should be very hard to beat. Libby Raider loves to fill a place as does Keno Bale. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

2017 SA OAKS POSTPONED ONE WEEK TO RUN NEXT WEEK

The Group 3 Coffex Coffee SA Oaks heats were to be run this Thursday night at Angle Park however with insufficient nominations to run two heats or more GRSA has postponed the series for one week.

The heats will now be conducted next Thursday night 14th September and will coincide with the Group 3 BGC SA Derby heats run on the same night. Both finals are worth $25,000 to the winner ($35,000 in total) to be run on Thursday 21st September. Eligibility for both the Oaks and Derby are for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2015 with Maiden greyhounds ineligible.

For Group races in South Australia it is a requirement that there are at least two heats conducted with full fields preferred. GRSA would encourage any trainer with an eligible greyhound interested in competing in both series to ensure they nominate by the prescribed time. GRSA however reserves the right to conduct, postpone or cancel these series depending on nominations received.

Nominations for both the Group 3 SA Oaks and Group 3 SA Derby close with GRSA at 9.00am on Monday 11th September 2017.

Both races are perfect lead in events to the $107,500 Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup series commencing with heats on Thursday 5th October, with the final on Friday 13th October.

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE FINAL TONIGHT

GRSA introduced the Kings and Queens Feature series in support of those greyhounds affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics from 30 months back down to 27 months for this years Oaks and Derby.

Tonight’s $6,000 final has drawn together an outstanding line up after the heats were conducted last week.

Heat winners were –
Windmill Haze – 29.88
Cairnlea Ollie – 29.81
Hesa Marlow – 29.83

OAKS & DERBY TRIALS

Tonight Queensland trainer Tom Tzouvelis has booked in Maurice Minor to trial at Angle Park in preparation for the SA Derby series. He is a winner of 8 races from 21 starts along with 7 placings and won a heat of the recent Group 3 Darwin Cup and on Saturday night won the Ipswich Derby. He will trial after Race 3 tonight.

On Saturday morning at Angle Park, Tom will also trial Comaneci in preparation for the postponed Oaks in a Box to Box. She is a winner of 8 races from 25 starts and is a sister of Maurice Minor.

Last Thursday night both Mepunga Blazer and Paradiso Lass for Jeff Britton who ran 1st and 2nd in the recent Group 1 Maturity Final at the Meadows trialled over the 515m.

Impressive sprinter Mepunga Blazer who has won 9 races with 2 placings from 17 starts and over $140,000 in prizemoney, trialled in 29.48 (4.44,16.73) for the Derby while Paradiso Lass who has won 6 races with 6 placings from 21 starts trialled for the SA Oaks series in 3015 (4.58,17.51).

Last Monday night at Angle Park on a very wet night WA trainer Enzo Crudeli booked in 3 greyhounds to trial over 515m in preparation for the SA Derby series. Impressive last start Cannington winner Black Bombshell who has won 8 races from 14 starts trialled in 30.06 (4.57,16.95) while Budles Galore who also won last start at Cannington trialled in 30.16 (4.65,17.25). He has the record of 5 wins and 6 placings from 15 starts. Kennel mate Backpacker Jack who is a winner of 7 races from 18 starts and 4 minor placings trialled in30.52 (4.75, 17.44) and was the last of the three to trial in wet conditions.

GUN MCBAIN ANOTHER SHOT AT AUSTRALIAN RECORD

South Australia’s iron dog Gun McBain will again be looking to make history tonight at Angle Park.

He will be taking aim at the Australian record for the most TAB wins by any greyhound in Australia. The Raye Kelly trained star equaled Just Proper’s record of 65 wins when he won at headquarters two weeks ago. Just Proper raced from 2012 to 2015 in Darwin and built an exceptional record. If Gun McBain can win he will take his record to 66 wins from 161 starts including 52 placings and prizemoney will surpass $160,000. He is engaged in race 1 tonight (box 2) due to start at 6.37pm SA time and he will hopefully add another accolade to his outstanding career.

The Australasian TAB record his 74 wins held by Little Mother who raced in New Zealand from 2009 to 2012 so there may be another target in “Guns” sights with success tonight.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below.

These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.

Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
