TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

This is what we have all been waiting for “its Adelaide Cup time” 6 fantastic heats kick off in race 3 and with a big contingent from Interstate arriving, the racing tonight will be first class. We see last year’s winner Aqua Cheetah in heat 4 (race 6) try and defend his title and local champ Worm Burner return to his home track in heat 5 (race 7) so it appears a terrific night of racing so let’s hope we can back a heap of winners.

Race 1 - The Petar Jovanovic kennel is in fine form of late and they have Molly Dobbs racing well, and she looks very hard to beat from box 5 in the opening event, she has a good turn of early pace so will give this a big shake. Winsome Summer will be charging home late and is a must for the trifecta, add Jimmy McBain for value from his rails draw. Box Up 1.3.5.6.

Race 2 - Troy Murray has two runners engaged in this and they can nearly run the Quinella, both are drawn well in box 1 and 7 and they should take beating. Slippers Wish can run a cheeky race down on the fence and is a must for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 3 - This is the first of the 6 UBET Adelaide Cup heats and the Seona Thompson kennel has arrived with a very strong team, they can start their night off with a winner with Aston Dee Bee which is owned here in SA by Ray Borda. He is a winner of 23 from 42 and is coming into this event with 3 wins from his last 5 starts and for mine is drawn to win from box 8. Raw Ability wasn’t disgraced at his 1st look at the track when 3rd here late last month so he will be the improver along with local sprinter Lachlan Brown who is racing well over the short. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 4 - The two main chances will be coming from out wide in Black Bombshell and Bewildering with the latter being in the money 19 of 28 and is another one in the Thompson kennel. Black Bombshell won the SA Derby here last start and has shown a liking to the Angle Park loam and will be right in the mix again. Box Up 2.3.7.8.

Race 5 - Winning form is good form and you can’t get any better than Zara’s Entity in the Kelvyn Greenough kennel, she was a last start winner at The Meadows in a slick 29.64 from box 5 then trialed here in a sensational 29.29 so we will put her on top. Lightning Frank made good late ground here last week at his 1st look and should be the big improver.  Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 6 - Last year’s winner Aqua Cheetah has been well travelled of late and is returning from 2 wins at Dapto, he has won 2 of 2 at this circuit and should come out running and will be trying to defend his last years win.  Hukanui will be doing his best work late and the faster they go early will suit him down to the ground. Add Striker Light who has been in the money 27 of her 35 career starts and is boxed for a bold showing. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 7 - Worm Burner returns to his home track where he won the National Sprint title in 2016, he should start the punters elect from a favourable draw of 2 and with moderate beginners either side he should be able to punch up on the fence and hold the early lead. Jacqui Blax has been running super quick times over the 600m and returns to the sprint tonight, he will be doing his best work over the last 100m and is a must for the trifecta. Sassy Ginger is a WA performer and might be a sneaky chance at odds. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

Race 8 - This is the 6th and final heat of the 2017 Adelaide Cup and the 2 main chances look to be Cairnlea Kenny and Ando’s Mac, both are front runners and from their middle draws will need luck early but their class should prevail. Aston Kody is more than capable on his night and could be the roughie with luck. Box Up 4.5.7.8.
Race 9 - This is a handy 600m event and it’s hard to go past last start winner Springvale Carla who has been racing well of late, she will be running on strongly over the last 100m. Zero Knockin’ and Bamba Lam Barney for the minors. Box Up 2.4.5.8.

Race 10 - Glory Fire looks one of the better bets of the night, she has only had the 4 career starts but comes out running. Edison Bale and Sassy Kist can add the value to our trifecta. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 11 - Blaxland should start the punters elect in the final event on a terrific night of racing, the Ray Murray trained sprinter loves a wide draw and should stay out of early trouble. Shimatron is very strong but will need an ounce of luck in the run to the 1st turn. Box Up 2.5.6.8.

NOTIFICATION OF TRAINING AMENDMENT & CLEARANCE OF GREYHOUNDS

Trainers are reminded of their obligation to notify GRSA within 3 working days of a greyhound coming into or leaving their kennel (Rule 105(4)(i)).

This is a requirement for all greyhounds regardless of where bred.  We have had a number of trainers recently put in training amendments late the night prior to nominations closing at 9am the following day, this practice can lead to your nomination not being accepted or being unable to nominate online should any issues arise the following morning.

Trainers are also leaving it to the night before nominations close to have greyhounds “checked off”.  This practice can also lead to your nomination not being accepted or being unable to nominate online should any issues arise.

It is therefore in the trainer’s best interest to have lodged with GRSA the training amendment and clearance of the greyhound a number of days prior to wishing to nominate the greyhound.  It is not GRSA’s responsibility to ensure that the paperwork is processed within ½ hour, which is the amount of time available to have it processed before nominations close at 9am.

COMPLETION OF PAPERWORK

Participants are reminded of their obligation to ensure that when lodging paperwork that it is fully completed and payment is made at the time of lodgement.  GRSA is here to assist should you be unsure of how to complete any paperwork however it is not our responsibility to arrange for its completion, nor is it our responsibility to ensure that it is lodged.  Therefore, please ensure when lodging any paperwork eg, Transfer of Ownerships, Litter Registrations etc that they are fully completed and paid for and lodged within a timely manner.

TOP GUN SPRINTERS AND STAYERS INVITATIONS RELEASED WITH BOGIE BEKIM REPRESENTING SA

Forty-three of the country’s best greyhounds have been handed invitations for either the Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun or the Group 2 Sky Racing Stayers Topgun, with both races to be run at The Meadows on October 28.

South Australia is represented in the Stayers with the Ben Rawlings trained Bogie Bekim given an invitation. It is a reward for a terrific year so far for the high quality stayer. Hopefully he can make the final cut.

The final field will be announced on Sky Racing 2’s, The Catching Pen on Tuesday, October 17, at 6.30pm. The Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun will be worth $150,000 to the winner (the richest invitation-only race in the world), while the Group 2 Sky Racing Stayers Topgun holds a $75,000 winner’s purse. The box draw for both races, once the finalists for both races are announced, will take place on track at The Meadows on October 21.

MT GAMBIER 277M RACING

Recently GRSA has had a couple of queries in regard to the reintroduction of 277m racing at Mt Gambier after they installed their 732m distance boxes.

When Mt Gambier transitioned from Non TAB to TAB Sky Racing the 400m boxes were installed and the 277m racing ceased. There is no intention from GRSA to move back to 277m racing. With the full support of the Mt Gambier GRC in regard to Time Grading, greyhounds of all abilities can race on Fridays over 400m, 512m, 600m so we feel at this time there is no need to separate the pool of greyhounds any further. Time Grading does allow greyhounds the opportunity to get into a race they can be competitive in even, if they can’t run a quick 400m.

Having said that, like the potential to run 388m races on a Monday night, where we are today is quite different than two years ago and will likely be different in a further two years, therefore nothing would be ruled out as an option by GRSA.

CHASERS BUFFET ON MONDAY NIGHTS

GRSA will be trialling a change in food offerings at Chasers with a reduced buffet to be available on Monday nights as well as a breakfast/brunch buffet on Wednesday.

This will begin next week starting Monday 9th October. The snack menu will also be available. The ala carte menu will still be available with existing participant discounts in McQueens.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below. These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.

Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing
SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
