Angle Park Racing Preview - 31.8.17
by The Shadow
We see the return of ON FIRE in race 8 tonight and what a fantastic run it was last Friday night when he ran a gallant 2nd in the National Sprint Final at Albion Park, he will start the punters elect in the FFA from box 2 and return to the winner’s circle. We have several interstaters from leading kennels racing tonight so keep an eye on them for the upcoming features. Don’t forget the guaranteed Trifecta Pool of $10,000 for Race 1 tonight so it is well worth a crack!
Race 1 - We can kick off with an early winner with the Ken Gill trained Stitch ‘Em Up in box 3, he has won his past 3 here and Gawler all in very good times, his early pace makes him the one to beat. Rockstar Lisa loves to run a place and is a must for the First Four. Add in Slippers Time who is boxed for a bold showing. Box Up 1.3.6.7.
Race 2 - The Jeff Britton kennel is crossing the border with a couple of runners and they have Alpha Themis engaged from box 6 in this, she won 4 starts back over the 400m at Geelong in 22.72 and has been placed at Sandown since she looks a chance in a very open affair. Cairnlea Gump can be hit and miss early but is very strong so we can’t leave him out. Box Up 3.4.5.6.
Race 3 and this is a toughie as there are several chances. Dyna Keitaro will improve from his rails draw and will be storming home late. The old fellow Gun McBain has been racing well over the short and is having his 160th start tonight and is a chance of pinching this. Add in Regal Looper who is a good Each Way chance drawn out wide. Box Up 1.3.4.7.
Race 4 - The Angela Langton kennel has a very smart one in Hoo Gur Affair, she has won 4 from 5 including a 29.83 win at Sandown last start and she looks very hard to beat in this. Lektra Aly has been well travelled of late with wins at Mount Gambier and Gawler in recent runs, she should figure in the mix. Box Up 2.3.5.7.
Race 5 - The Petar Jovanovic kennel has one of the better bets of the night in Cairnlea Kenny in this, he has been racing well in open company and been runner up behind On Fire at his past couple, he looks too strong for these. Croydon Boys has been improving and has won 3 of his past 4 and is drawn well down on the rails. Box Up 2.5.6.7.
Race 6 - The Jovanovic kennel can have a race to race double if Cairnlea Ollie reproduces his last start effort when winning at Gawler in a BOD 30.80 from the same draw, we will make him our top pick. Dawning Hope is in the powerful Butcher kennel and is very smart when on song. Box Up 3.4.7.8.
Race 7 - This looks a terrific betting affair as there is a lot of pace on the inside. Brick Lane will come out running and will find this a lot easier than his recent runs here. Hopes Beau has been the improver with wins at his past 2 runs leading throughout on both occasions, add my roughie in Windmill Haze who fell out of boxes here last start and is sure to be running on late for the trifecta. Box Up 1.4.6.8.
Race 8 and as mentioned earlier we see ON FIRE return to his home track, he was high flying in the run to the line when 2nd behind Jury beaten just over 2 Lengths in the National Final and on that effort looks the measuring stick again. The pace will come from High Eden Frost and Marlow Brown and we can’t leave out the Victorian Alpha Aion who is very smart and having his first look at the track. Box Up 1.2.3.5.
Race 9 - Jeff Britton should get his petrol money with Slinky Inky in this, the Victorian chaser has more than handy credentials and won over the 595m at Sandown 2 runs back, from box 1 should be far too strong. Rip It Ralph will be double figure odds so he will add value to our trifecta and Becky Bale is well drawn out wide. Box Up 1.2.4.8.
Race 10 - This is the 600m of the night and the Troy Murray kennel can run the quinella with Aston Amon and Bamba Lam Barney the latter being my top pick. Sutton Steele is a pacey type but would need luck to beat the inside two. Box Up 1.2.4.5.
Race 11 - It’s always good to go home on a winner and we can do that with the Tony Rasmussen trained Hukanui out in box 7, he will be charging home late and just needs an ounce of luck early. Buzz Box and Winsome Summer are better than their recent runs suggest and can run into the placings. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

GUN MCBAIN SHOOTING FOR AUSTRALIAN RECORD
South Australia’s iron dog Gun McBain will again be looking to make history tonight at Angle Park.
He will be taking aim at the Australian record for the most TAB wins by any greyhound in Australia. The Raye Kelly trained star equaled Just Proper’s record of 65 wins when he won at headquarters last week. Just Proper raced from 2012 to 2015 in Darwin and built an exceptional record. If Gun McBain can win he will take his record to 66 wins from 160 starts including 51 placings and prizemoney will surpass $160,000. He is engaged in race 3 tonight (box 3) due to start at 7.22pm SA time and he will hopefully add another accolade to his outstanding career.
The Australasian TAB record has 74 wins held by Little Mother who raced in New Zealand from 2009 to 2012 so there may be another target in “Guns” sights with success tonight.
HEATS KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE TONIGHT
GRSA introduced the Kings and Queens Feature series in support of those greyhounds affected by the change to the AGRA Age Restricted Classics from 30 months back down to 27 months for this year Oaks and Derby.
Tonight we have three terrific mixed heats with greyhounds looking to qualify for the $6,000 Final next week (Thursday 7th September). The series has drawn together some exciting chasers with the likes of Cairnlea Kenny, Luca Bazooka, Farmin, Cairnlea Ollie, Brick Lane and Hope’s Beau all doing battle.
With three heats the first two and two fastest thirds will qualify for the final. The box draw will be conducted on track after the running of Race 8 tonight.
OAKS AND DERBY TRIALS COMING UP
Tonight we have a couple of outstanding greyhound’s trialling in preparation for the Group 3 Oaks and Group 3 Derby coming up in the next few weeks.
Tonight both Mepunga Blazer and Paradiso Lass who ran 1st and 2nd in the recent Group 1 Maturity Final at the Meadows will trial over the 515m for leading Victorian trainer Jeff Britton.
Impressive sprinter Mepunga Blazer who has won 9 races with 2 placings from 17 starts and over $140,000 in prizemoney, will trial in preparation for the Derby series while Paradiso Lass who has won 6 races with 6 placings from 21 starts will trial for the SA Oaks series beginning next Thursday night.
On Monday night at Angle Park WA trainer Enzo Crudeli has booked in 3 greyhounds to trial over 515m in preparation for the SA Derby series. Impressive last start Cannington winner Black Bombshell who has won 8 races from 14 starts will trial along with Budles Galore who also won last start at Cannington. He has the record of 5 wins and 6 placings from 15 starts. Kennel mate Backpacker Jack will also trial who is a winner of 7 races from 18 starts and 4 minor placings.
Next Thursday night Queensland trainer Tom Tzouvelis has booked in Maurice Minor to trial at Angle Park in preparation for the SA Derby series. He is a winner of 7 races from 20 starts along with 7 placings and won a heat of the recent Group 3 Darwin Cup. He is engaged in the Ipswich Derby on Saturday night so all things going well we will see him in Adelaide next week.
It’s an exciting time in SA with our premier racing carnival only 1 week away with the Oaks, Derby and Adelaide Cup looking like some of the best series we have seen in recent times.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES
In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below. These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.
Changes listed below:
Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing
SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
