TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

In a big week of racing here at Headquarters we see a handy programme with several interstate visitors. The Robert Britton kennel is here to show a few of his charges the track for some of our bigger races coming up so they are worth following in the earlier events. We had a terrific night on the punt last Thursday so it should be no different tonight as I like a couple of good things.

Race 1 and we will kick off with the Victorian sprinter in Erelda Bale, she has only had 12 career starts and has been in the money at 8 of them from box 1. She should make her presence felt. The main dangers will come from the newcomer Fade Away and the ultra-consistent Venetian Mask Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 2 and this is a very open affair but I am tipping a race to race double for the Britton kennel with Brolly Bale out in box 8 saluting. He has sound city form and the wide draw is a bonus, then venture right to the rails with Real Moment and Sparkling Red. Both are drawn for bold showings Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 3, we tipped him last week and he found a heap of trouble and that is Optic Blast in box 5 when he finished down the track for a well beaten 4th. . He looks the big improver and is very smart when on song. Coast finally broke through for a much deserved win here last start and is a must for trifecta punters as is Gnasher Box Up 3.5.7.8.

Race 4, Tracie Price has a handy one in Skatey Perry she has been well travelled of late and has been improved with every start she has at this circuit. Temerity has a good record from this draw and will be right on the pace early Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 5 – Mrs. Bubbles was back to her pet distance here last week and blew them away and ran a good time she looks the goods again from box 4. Hy Guard loves to run a place as does the interstater Divas Shadow down on the fence Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 6  Gun McBain can bounce back tonight for the Kelly kennel, he was slow out and checked from pillar to post and failed to beat a runner home here last week, but appears better suited here and is a big chance of leading. Dyna Keitaro will be rocketing home late despite his ordinary draw. Box Up 2.5.6.7.

Race 7 - This particular event has several chances but it’s hard to go past Kalispell for the Wittholz kennel, he has drawn the rails and is down in grade. Scorching proved too strong here last week from box 2 but finds himself a lot wider in this yet is very smart with a clear run Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 8 - This is a toughie, as the main chances have drawn very poorly, I am going with a value runner out in box 8 in Back Packer he has been a hit and miss of late on box rise but with an ounce of luck might be able to be on the pace early and run a big race. Kennel mate Its Classified should start the punters elect and looks the improver add in Rippin Rose Box Up 1.4.5.8.

Race 9 The 731m event of the night and we only have 5 starters we will go with the Troy Murray trained Invariably who is having her 2nd run over the trip she can lead these and nearly pinch this. Master Bekim will be rattling home and is the big danger. Box Up 4.6.8.

Race 10 Tracie Price can bring up a double with Blazing Moment, the youngster has won 2 from 2 and from the rails draw looks very hard to beat again. Gumaroy Model returned to form with a smart win here last week from box 3 and is drawn for a bold showing again, add in Mister Mann for the trifecta Box Up 1.2.3.7

Race 11 and we should be in front so we can have a cheeky bet on Dyna Jumpy for the Wendy Matcott kennel. She overcome early trouble to run a nice 2nd behind Dream Dazzler and might be able to pinch this in an open affair. Macaloney and Hotham Lad can run into the placings. Box Up 4.5.6.8.

NATIONALS PREVIEW

As we all know the 2016 UBET Nationals are here on Saturday night and the Distance Championship is race 6 on the programme. These are very tough races to tip in as they are all quality performers representing their states. I will go with the pacey Big Easy Red who has won his last 4 in Brisbane all in terrific fashion. Ring The Bell from Victoria has a picket fence form beside his name as does Cardiology. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 8 The UBET National Sprint Final and I will go with the 1 runner again in Zambora Brockie, he has won his last 9 and is representing Victoria, he had a look at the track last week and absolutely flew, carving out a 29.44 run. We can’t leave out our local champ Worm Burner for the Cameron Butcher kennel, he made short work of a quality field in our state final last start, and his home track advantage will be a huge bonus, add in Benteke for trifecta Box Up 1.3.4.6.

UBET NATIONALS GRAND FINALS

Well the cut and thrust is all but over as we prepare for Saturday’s UBET National Grand Finals. We know all of the finalists, their box draws; we’ve seen the interstate runner’s trial at Angle Park (see summary below). It is now down to who is going to win the Finals.

I congratulate all of the finalists for getting here after all this is what it is all about. It is the reason why lovers of the industry strive to own a greyhound or horse; to win the big one. It doesn’t happen to many, but let’s face it if it was too easy it wouldn’t mean as much. Yes the ultimate is winning the big one, but that’s only part of it. The nervousness of getting here and the anticipation of the race add to the enjoyment of the occasion. Being part of the carnival, attending race meetings, the Gala Dinner other functions add to the feeling of excitement. Yes there will be disappointment, but for the defeated no-one can take away the fact that you have owned a National Finalist.

As for the Nationals, the greyhound industry and AGRA must be congratulated on how these Championships have grown and are looked upon with great prestige and are a showcase for this sport.

It is also great that South Australia can hold these Nationals. It is important for the profile of SA greyhound racing and is a fitting reward for followers in our great state. Over the year’s we have won our share and let’s hope we can take off 2 more titles on Saturday Night.

Racing on Saturday night will start at 5.39pm, with the Final event on a 12 race program to jump at 9.48pm. The Distance Final will be Race 6 at 7.19pm and the Sprint Final will be Race 8 at 8.15pm.

We have a full preview of the two races put together by AGRA publicity Officer, Neil Brown, available on the GRSA website.

SA Bred Finalists

It is great to see our SA Bred greyhounds doing so well locally and on the National level and on Saturday night we have three SA bred greyhounds making the finals of the Sprint and Distance UBET Championships.

Worm Burner engaged in the Sprint is the brother of Springvale Bryne who is engaged in the Distance so what an achievement it could be if brother and sister took out both Group 1 events. As part of the local SA Bred Super Bonus Scheme just for making the Group 1 final each breeder will receive $1,000 and if they can win the big one the breeder will receive $12,500.
