TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight’s 11 event programme looks a ripper on paper so we should be able to back a few winners at each way odds. The highlight is race 8 the SA St Leger final and it appears fairly open with several chances so it makes for a good trifecta and first 4 event.

Race 1 - we kick off with a wide open affair and I like the well-drawn Molly Dobbs down in box 1 for the Jovanovic kennel, she has a good turn of early pace and can run time out in front, Molly Be Nimble returned to the winners circle with a nice win here last week and is a must for the trifecta. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

Race 2 - The book ends look the main chances in this and they are both from the Rasmussen kennel, Stick Figure can be hit and miss on box rise and only needs to stay out of trouble early to have a big say. Dyna Calder will keep on improving and is well drawn out wide and Edison Bale for the multiples. Box Up 1.6.7.8.

Race 3 - The Butcher kennel rarely goes home without a winner and Chopsticks can win from his draw of 2, his main problem is he is awkward early. Megastar Bound has been struggling of late but is capable of improving, add Todd Bless for value. Box Up 2.3.4.5.

Race 4 - The distance affair of the night it looks a race in two with Linco Bale a last winner here over this trip and Long Gully Gilly who has been the bridesmaid here at his last 3 runs. Allen Mondo has been placed over the journey before and can fill a place. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 5 - Aussie Chegia has a handy one in Tyla Grace and she flew home last start to run an eye catching 2nd, she should give this a big shake. Roc The Belvue is very smart and will start the punters elect and if able to lead it would be all over. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 6 - the likely leader in this is the Lisa Rasmussen sprinter Trace Amount, she is racing in terrific form without winning but gets her chances tonight. Zipping Prince is well drawn down on the fence and should figure right in the mix, add Zipping Nelson and we shouldn’t go wrong. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 7 Fantastic betting race as there is at least 5 main chances but we can’t pick them all, Wheel Spinner was a last start winner here and is drawn for a bold showing down in box 1 venture out to Regal Looper who charged home to win here last start from box 5 in quick time, Allen Portland will be thundering home over the top of them with an ounce of luck early Box Up 1.3.6.7.

Race 8 - The final of the SA St Leger and as mentioned before there looks to be several chances. I’m going with the Janice Jones speedster in Dream A Little, she was a last start winner here defeating On Fire in quick time and from box 3 looks a big chance of holding the early lead. On Fire continues to start at skinny odds but has a terrific strike rate here and is from the powerful Butcher kennel who knows how to win feature events. Scorching is another who will be running on but lacks the pace to be with them early. Box Up 1.3.7.8.

Race 9 - The Rasmussen kennel might have a big night out as Dyna Chirpy is in great form and will prove very hard to beat despite her poor draw, kennel mate Zolten Bale is the improver and is a must for the pick 4 punters. Add in MacKinlay who keeps on running into the places. Box Up 3.4.5.7.

Race 10 - Tough race and let’s hope we are in front coming into this event, Hesa Jayclo will be doing his best work late and is more than capable of breaking through if close enough early and don’t leave out Pelican Keeping at big odds. Box Up 2.4.5.6.

Race 11 - He won on debut here last week in good fashion and that is Lupe Fiasco for the Johnstone kennel, he should only improve and can send us home on a winning note. Trademark Boss loves this track and is well drawn down in box 2. Heading My Way and Yes Sarge for the pick 4. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

2017 SA ST LEGER FINAL TONIGHT

Last week’s exciting heats saw the first heat taken out by the Ken Gill trained Windmill Haze who surprised everyone with his win including the bookmakers starting at $66 on the UBET tote. The son of Barcia Bale and Contrary Mary ran home powerfully to score by 2 lengths in a solid 30.03.

The fastest qualifier for tonights final was the Jan Jones trained Dream A Little who upset race favourite On Fire in a very slick 29.80 for the 515m journey. The daughter of Banjo Boy and Zardae won by over 2 lengths after charging home over the concluding stages, On Fire did the same but was no match for the winner.

The final heat was won by Funky Monkey for Chris Jaensch who was able to get the jump on her rivals from box 8 and powered towards the front and prove too strong in the run home. The daughter of Cape Hawke and Power Of Blue won by 3 ½ lengths in a solid 30.08.

Tonight’s final is a super race for some of our most promising young chasers who will hopefully take the next step into open company in the coming months. The race has plenty of early speed and greyhounds who can really charge home so luck in running will play a huge part.

Box draw for the 2017 SA St Leger final:
1. Scorching - Matthew Payne
2. Thumb A Ride - Troy Murray
3. Dream A Little - Jan Jones
4. Windmill Haze - Ken Gill
5. Rockstar Elle - Sharyn Gray
6. Aston Apollo - Troy Murray
7. On Fire - Cameron Butcher
8. Funky Monkey - Christopher Jaensch

9. Roc The Belvue (res) SCR
10. Crunchin Numbers (res) SCR

The $8,565 St Leger final will be race 8 to be run at 9.13pm (SA time) and will have full coverage on Sky Racing 1.

CLASSIC BET MOUNT GAMBIER CUP CARNIVAL KICKS OF TOMORROW & SUNDAY

Tomorrow the club will conducted three heats of the Produce Store Feature Maiden with the first two and two fastest thirds qualifying for the $2,000 final next Sunday 5th March.

There are two terrific heats of the Blue Lake 600m Grade 5 series with some handy middle distance performers engaged where the first 4 past the post in each heat will qualify for the $2,000 final. There are also two heats of the Formula 400 Open Series tomorrow over the 400m where the first 4 past the post will qualify for the $1,500 final next Sunday.

On Sunday there are eight outstanding Classic Bet Mt Gambier Cup heats on the program where it will be cut throat to make it through to the $10,000 final next Sunday. Only the winners will qualify so the racing will be tight and competitive.

The club would be wrapped with the class of nominations received from trainers with the likes of Lisa & Tony Rasmussen, Ben Rawlings, Paul Barry, Wendy Sebastyan, Ken Gill and Tim Aloisi all making the trip from Adelaide, a raft of Victorian trainers including Andrea Dailly, Nicole Stanley, Jeff Guy and Peter Franklin with top chances engaged and all the local South East trainers make for an exciting series.

Next Sunday 5th March will not only feature the Classic Mount Gambier Cup Final but also a $2,000 consolation of the Mt Gambier Cup as well as all the other finals making it a bumper program.

SA STARS AT THE MEADOWS ON SATURDAY NIGHT

South Australia will play a big hand in the Australian Cup heats and Super Stayers heats on Saturday night with locally owned and trained greyhounds featured.

In the heats of the Group 1 Australian Cup SA's star sprinter Worm Burner, for Cameron Butcher, has drawn box 6 in heat 2 however this heat could be considered slightly weaker than most. After his 6th place in the Group 1 Temlee last weekend he will be looking to begin faster on Saturday night and give himself every chance of making another Group 1 final.  SA owned Don’t Kid Me (Ray Fewings) and Diego Bale (Tim Aloisi & Matt Lehman) have drawn the final heat drawing 3 and 5 respectively and look good each way chances. They have been in pretty good form with Don’t Kid Me terrific in the recent Cranbourne Cup series and Diego Bale doing well through the Launceston Cup series.
The Group 1 Super Stayers will include Ben Rawlings with Bogie Bekim who will feature in the first heat of the Super Stayers and looks to be in strong chance after his great win in the Group 1 Galaxy at Cannington recently. Springvale Bryne, trained by Gavin Harris, lines up in a strong second heat of the Super Stayers which includes last weeks Group 1 Zoom Top winner, Burn One Down. Good luck to all the South Aussies!

GAWLER & ANGLE PARK TO SWAP TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK FOR DRAINAGE WORKS

The Angle Park track has been booked in for drainage works next week where the contractors require two consecutive week days to complete the works.

The Gawler meeting on Tuesday 28th February has been swapped with the Angle Park meeting on Wednesday 1st March allowing for both Wednesday and Thursday of next week free from racing at Angle Park during the day to allow works to be carried out. The Thursday night meeting next week at Angle Park will not be affected.

These meetings are a straight swap with the Tuesday at Angle Park being a Provincial 2 meeting (prizemoney and grading) run into the catching pen and the Wednesday at Gawler being a Provincial 1 meeting (prizemoney and grading) run on the FOL.

The trials will remain as normal with Angle Park trialling on Tuesday night and Gawler trialling on Wednesday night.

THE LAUNCHING PAD AT SANDOWN – LOCAL HEATS NEXT MONTH

Again this year the Sandown GRC offered sweepstakes tickets into the Launching Pad Series.

There are 80 entry forms available with the series worth $410,000 in prizemoney.
There are special conditions on the race being greyhounds that have won between 1 and 6 races and have not had more than 30 starts at close of nominations. The heats will be run at Sandown over the 515m on Thursday 30th March, the semi finals on Thursday 6th April with the $210,000 final run on Thursday 13th April.

Greyhound Racing SA was able to secure a ticket and will give one greyhound the opportunity to compete in this lucrative series. We will run a heat and final series to determine who will make the Launching Pad heats on 30th March.

Our heats will be run on Wednesday 8th March over the 515m at Angle Park for greyhounds that have won 1-4 races and no more than 28 starts. The heats will be worth $1,130 and will be Non Penalty events. The final will be run at Angle Park on Thursday 16th March over the 515m with prizemoney of $4,540 and will also be Non Penalty.
The winner of the final will take their spot in the Launching Pad heats two weeks later however if the winner for whatever reason cannot take their spot then the next qualified greyhound will be given that spot.
GRSA has restricted the series to 1-4 wins and 28 starts incase a greyhound wins both the heat and final so this will still keep them eligible. We have also made our final two weeks before the Launching Pad heats at Sandown giving the trainer an opportunity to get across the border and trial for the big race.
Nominations close 9.00am on Friday 3rd March with GRSA.

FREE WIFI AT MCQUEENS AND CHASERS
The free wi-fi service is now up and running and is available to the public in both Chasers and McQueens. There should be no further issues.

AGRC MEMBERS LUCKY DOG DRAW

Each year we have drawn 4 names for each week’s Thursday APK race 8, next to each name is the box number of the dog you have drawn in Race 8.  If your box number happens to win Race 8, you can renew your membership next year (30th June) for half price.

If you happen to own or train greyhounds racing on the date that your name has been drawn, you can choose to have your dogs drawn instead of the lucky box number and it works the same if your dog drawn happens to win.  It is up to you to notify an AGRC committee member on the night that you want to take up this option and we will randomly draw one of your dogs competing on the night. AGRC Committee members are Alan Amezdroz, Barry Stewart, Petar Jovanovic, Melissa Trowbridge, Gabe Vistolli and Gavin Harris.
