TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Well it’s that time of year again! Where did those 12 months disappear to... and to make it worse we are all another year older! So let’s back a winner and all have a terrific day on Sunday!  I wish everyone from the GRSA staff and trainers and owners a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Race 1 and it’s a terrific race to kick the night off with, there is a heap of pace out wide so we will go with High Eden Frost he loves this draw and can bounce back into the winners circle.  What’s Up Herbie and Elisha’s Delight for the minors.  Box Up 1.4.8.9.

Race 2 - We will go with the book ends here in Yorke Cracker and Little Bit Silly.  Both have only had a handful of starts and are drawn to be right in the mix.  Imari Bale is tardy early but is very strong and don’t be surprised if she wins at each way odds with a bit of luck.  Box Up 1.3.7.8.

Race 3, tough event as there are several who are very smart when out in front, but they have a tendency to miss the kick so I will go with Just As Touch who has been racing well of late and should be rattling home over the top off them.  Buzz Box should start the punters elect but will need luck from the poor draw.  Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 4 - Prancer Dancer is the omen bet of the night at this time of year and on recent form should be right in the finish.  Bit Saucy is a pacey type and the rails draw is a big help.  Add in Frac Geek out wide and that looks the trifecta.  Box Up all the evens 2.4.6.8.

Race 5 - this is a 600m event and I like one in the Angela Modra kennel in Sutton Steel, he has a good turn of early pace and will find this a lot easier than his recent runs.  Allen Membo will appreciate the extra distance.  Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 6 - the Christmas Sprint, we only have the 6 runners but they are all quality, it’s hard to go past Wilba Beast, he has drawn box 1 and on his last start win here in a sizzling 29.64 he looks the measuring stick again.  High Eden Snow just keeps on winning and is sure to be there when it counts.  Add in Mrs Bubbles who loves filling the places.  Box Up 1.4.5.8.

Race 7 - I like the inside 4 as they all have different racing styles, so they can run into the placings.  Crisis Bale is drawn to ping and win from his rails draw but he has proven costly with punters of late.  Aston Dawn is hit and miss on box rise but when on song is very smart.  Box Up the inside brigade 1.2.3.4.

Race 8, we have been tipping Ruff State in recent weeks and he gets his chance to bounce back into the winners circle tonight from box 2.  Blown Away returned to the winners circle here last start and is the main danger.  Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 9, this is the distance affair and Go You Girl looks the one they have to beat.  She only went down by the barest of margins here last week and from her draw of 8 looks the winner.  Keroma Storm will be there abouts from his draw of 1, he has won over this trip and his recent form suggests he’s a chance in this.  Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 10, the Murray kennel rarely goes home without a winner and Flying Mal appears a big chance down in box 3, he can be hit and miss on box rise but is a chance of beating the inside brigade out.   Cyclone Clifford was a huge run here last week and I thought we might have collected the bickies at big odds when he was a gallant 2nd ,he is a must for the trifecta again.  Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 11 and we need to be in front as this is a very tough affair we should load up on the trifecta and first 4.   Box Up 1.3.4.6. and we will make Play Alone as our roughie of the night.

XMAS SPRINT TONIGHT

The highlight on tonight’s 11 event program at Angle Park will be the 2016 Xmas Sprint Free For All featuring a top line up of sprinters. Only a small field of 6 are greeting the starter, but what a line up with Mrs. Bubbles, Coorong Kid, Zipping Geoff, Dyna Keitaro, Wilba Beast and the youngster of the group High Eden Snow all doing battle in the final feature before the New Year Year. There will be a rug and trophy presentation after the race so good luck to all connections.

EMERLEY PARK CANCELLED ON MONDAY DUE TO HEAT

With the high temperature forecast on Monday the Club have cancelled their trials at Emerely Park.

ANGLE PARK MONDAY STARTING LATER

Monday nights race meeting at Angle Park will start at 6.52pm which is later than normal due to the hot weather forecast on Boxing Day. Kenneling is from 5.30pm to 6.15pm.

GAWLER TUESDAY 27TH DECEMBER SHIFTED FROM A DAY TO NIGHT MEETING DUE TO HEAT

With extreme heat forecast in South Australia for an extended period through Christmas and Boxing Day GRSA has shifted the Gawler meeting on Tuesday 27th December from a Day meeting to a Night meeting. The Gawler meeting will now start at 6.32pm with a 12 race program.

Kennelling times will be 5.15pm to 6.00pm. GRSA thanks Sky Racing and the Gawler GRC for their support.

NO TRIALS TUESDAY NIGHT AT ANGLE PARK

Due to the shifting of the Gawler meeting to the night time slot on Tuesday night there will be NO trials at Angle Park due to staffing issues.

SATURDAY MORNING TRIALS PROCEDURE

With some recent issues in regard to the Saturday morning trials at Angle Park, trial staff have advised that to make it simpler and clearer for participants and employees that there will be one block per distance where FOL, Catching Pen, Handslips etc will be booked rather than having this separated. Trainers will get their number as normal for that distance and no one else will have the same number over that distance to stop any confusion. As per normal after every 10 trials there will be a track grade and they then move to the next distance (likely starting with 515m). GRSA will trial this for a period of time starting this week and I ask that participants please be patient with their fellow industry members and GRSA staff.

PRIZEMONEY PAID XMAS WEEK

With the Xmas Public Holidays this year being on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th December GRSA will still look to make the normal prizemoney payments on Wednesday however it is likely that it will not process to Owners/Trainers bank accounts until Thursday.

RACE NIGHT DESK UNAVAILABLE ON THURSDAYS FOR THREE WEEKS FROM NEXT WEEK

Due to staffing arrangements on Thursday 29th December and Thursday the 5th and 12th January we unfortunately will not have staff behind the Race Night Office counter. The area will be open to participants to take fields and race results as per normal. The Trainers Fee will be paid upstairs by Hospitality staff between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. GRSA will provide signage for industry participants and if there is paperwork to be lodged please try and organise with the fulltime staff prior to each Thursday night.

GRSA apologises if this causes inconvenience during this 3 week period.

MARK AISTON TO FILL IN WHEN RAY FEWINGS ON LEAVE IN JANUARY

Our long time MC at Angle Park Ray Fewings will be taking some leave in January and we are fortunate to have radio and TV personality Mark Aiston available to fill in while Ray is away. Mark has supported and followed greyhound racing for many years and it is terrific to have him on board. Mark will be on-course tonight however will be hosting on the 12th, 19th and 26th January along with the 2nd February while Ray is away.

LOCALS ON THE NATIONAL SCENE

The time honoured Group 1 Hobart Thousand Final will be conducted tonight with an outstanding field qualifying after last weeks heats. To be run over the 461m and with $75,000 to the winner the final features Unlawful Entry, American Monster and El Grand Amigo. The final will be race 8 tonight due to start at 9.22pm (SA Time).

On Saturday night the locals hit the Meadows in Victoria for the Group 1 heats of the Silver Chief with both On Fire for Cameron Butcher and Aston Kody for Troy Murray engaged. It could be an early Xmas present for the locals with On Fire drawing box 1 in race 1 due to start at 5.39pm (SA time). Aston Kody for Troy Murray has drawn a little awkward in race 10 out of box 6 due to start at 8.40pm (SA time). Both have been in excellent form and we wish the connections all the best of luck on Christmas Eve.

The semi finals for the series will be run on December 31 with the $100,000 to the winner final on Saturday 7th January.

On Monday night the SA Owned chaser Chrichton Bale will be shooting for Group 1 glory in the Sale Cup Final. Owned by local identities Tim Aloisi and Matthew Lehman the Darren Fisher trained dog has drawn perfectly in box 1 after a solid win in the heats. The final will be race 6 on the card due to start at 8.36pm SA time and we wish the best of luck to the SA connections on Monday night.

GRADING UPDATES

The Grading Review Panel met on Friday 11th November to discuss grading in South Australia from an Agenda provided by submissions and industry consultation during the past few months. Following is the main points introduced from 1st December 2016 -

  • The panel advised to be consistent that Grade 6 greyhounds should remain in the drawn fields so long as they were eligible at time of nomination. This would be a change for the 4 win Non SA Bred Grade 6 greyhounds and APK/APM Grade 5 wins who would have normally been withdrawn free of penalty. The panel were supportive of these greyhounds remaining eligible.
  • Pathway winners should be included on the Order of Preference. Regardless of the winners time the performance will be considered as a Country win (like Pt Augusta) and thus will sit on the Order of Preference at 13 if a last start Pathway winner.
  • The table below is in regard to a Time Standard for Masters Events at different tracks over different distances. The panel agreed to the table and advised that the same conditions for Thursday night be implemented for other meetings when a greyhound equals or breaks the Time Standard being ineligible for a Masters Event at that distance and track. Whilst they do not take a grade they have to have two unplaced runs before being considered for a Masters event.

This refers to the Grade 5 Masters events Only.

  • The panel agreed to change the condition of eligibility from 3 months to 6 months for how long prior to a greyhound racing. This comes into line with the 6 month satisfactory trial policy.

**Please note that the GRP were supportive of trainers putting as much information in the comments section of their nomination to assist the Grader in the grading process. Please give him as many options as possible however if trainers write nothing the grader will grade accordingly. If trainers nominate for a specific race advertised in the All tracks calendar and it doesn’t go ahead it is recommended trainers give the Grader another option on their nomination. If trainers do not want their greyhounds to be mixed then they need to be clear on their nomination and understand that the races will be graded accordingly and if you were going to be in a mixed event under normal grading guidelines then the greyhound will be left out**

AGRC MEMBERS LUCKY DOG DRAW

Each year we have drawn 4 names for each week’s Thursday APK race 8, next to each name is the box number of the dog you have drawn in Race 8.  If your box number happens to win Race 8, you can renew your membership next year (30th June) for half price.

If you happen to own or train greyhounds racing on the date that your name has been drawn, you can choose to have your dogs drawn instead of the lucky box number and it works the same if your dog drawn happens to win.  It is up to you to notify an AGRC committee member on the night that you want to take up this option and we will randomly draw one of your dogs competing on the night. AGRC Committee members are Alan Amezdroz, Barry Stewart, Petar Jovanovic, Melissa Trowbridge, Gabe Vistolli and Gavin Harris.
