TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

As the racings hots up, here at headquarters tonight we have 2 finals each worth $25,000 to the winner. They are the 2017 Coffex Coffee SA Oaks which is race 6 on the programme and the 2017 BGC Industrial Cleaning Supplies SA Derby which is race 8 , to top the programme off we have 2 very good races over the 600m and don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events. The kennel to follow is the Mark Delbridge team.

Race 1 and this is a tricky one to kick off with and I like one at big odds in Molly Dobbs, she is normally a quick beginner and with luck she might be able to pinch this. Barossa Kid is very smart when on song as is Wheel Spinner who has drawn very well. Box Up 1.3.5.6 and don’t forget about the Guaranteed Trifecta Pool of $10,000.

Race 2 - Gavin Harris looks to have a smart one in Zinfandel Zara, she won here on debut in a smart 29.78 from box 5 and looks very hard to beat again on that effort. The dangers if any will come from Edison Bale and Addison’s Way. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 3 and this is the 1st of the 600m heats and Jacqui Blax should have the pace to lead from box 1, he has been looking for the extra trip and will lead here for a long way. Aston Amon has terrific form over this distance and is my pick as he has won here in quick time in the past. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 4 - The 2nd of the 600m heats and if Harbourmaster is able to lead he would take a power of beating. He will be doing his best work over the last 100m but has proven costly with punters in the past. Sutton Steele steps quickly and has been knocking on the door of late. Box Up 4.5.7.8.

Race 5 - The Victorian sprinter Raw Ability is in fine form, he has won 11 of 21 along with 3 placings and was a last start winner at the Meadows from this draw. High Eden Frost will come out running and his home track advantage makes him my top pick, he loves this track and looks the likely leader .Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 6 - This is the Final of the SA Oaks and with $25,000 to the winner it’s certainly worth winning. It is more open than people think with at least 4 good chances and I will stick with Hoo Gur Affair for the Angela Langton kennel. I have tipped her at both of her starts here at headquarters only to be the bridesmaid on both occasions; she has moderate beginners on her inside and might be able to land close to the lead. Slinky Inky rattled home late last week for the powerful Jeff Britton kennel to win from box 6 and will be very hard to beat again on that effort, add the well-drawn Osakalaka who looks the improver. Box Up 1.4.5.6.

Race 7 - There is a lot of early pace in this so it will be who can get the clear run early so we will go with Dyna Dean down in box 2, he was a last start winner at the Meadows in 29.87 from the same draw and he should be able to kick up early and prove too strong. Rock Away is racing well and loves to fill a place. Box Up 2.3.5.7.

Race 8 - This is the SA Derby Final and it’s very hard to tip against the Jeff Britton trained superstar Mepunga Blazer, he jumped to the front here last week and made short work of his opposition winning by over 11 lengths in a sensational 29.25. It’s one of the quickest runs we have seen here at headquarters in a long time and he will jump the short price favourite. Maurice Minor flashed home late to win in 29.64 and can only keep on improving with another run on the track. Black Bombshell has a good turn of early pace and is well drawn down on the rails. Box Up 3.5.6.7.

Race 9 - The Delbridge kennel can get some petrol money with Dyna Aviator from box 4, he will find this more to his liking than his last start 4th here behind Maurice Minor. He has moderate beginners on his inside and is very strong; the dangers will come from Sweeping Strikes and Cairnlea Gump. Box Up 3.4.7.8.

Race 10 - We will stick with the old fellow in Gun McBain, he set the pace with a nice win at Gawler last week leading throughout from box 6 to register his 66th win from his 162nd starts. From the wide draw he might be able to pinch this. Shimatron from the Rasmussen kennel has been well travelled of late and will be the one to watch as he will be flying home over the top of them, add Aston Apollo who is no slouch early. Box Up 2.5.7.8.

Race 11 Dyna Elvio will appreciate the grade and the draw in the final event, he was beaten by a massive margin here last week behind Mepunga Blazer in slick time and from the rails can send us home on a winning note. Lepa Nada has pace and has a handy record at this venue. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

2017 COFFEX COFFEE SA OAKS FINAL TONIGHT

Last week at Angle Park it was a racing lovers delight with both the Coffex Coffee SA Oaks heats and BGC Industrial Cleaning Supplies SA Derby heats conducted on the same night and what a night of racing it was.

The SA Oaks heats kicked of the night with two terrific races. The first heat was won in stylish fashion by Slinky Inky for Jeff Britton who was able to lead for most of the trip. She held of a strong challenge from Hoo Gur Affair for Angela Langton who went for an inside run down the back straight and was slightly checked costing her a length. She only went down by half a length and could easily go one better tonight. They both went terrific with Slinky Inky running 29.91 for the 515m journey while Serene Machine ran home solidly into third place for Jamie Quinlivian.

The second Oaks heat was won by Alpha Themis for Jeff Britton who bounced back from her disappointing last at headquarters a few weeks ago with a strong all the way victory in a slick 29.97. Osakalaka ran solidly into second place for Jessica Sharp and with the inside box tonight she really comes into calculations. Series favourite Paradiso Lass ran home very well into third place for Jeff Britton and her supporters would have liked the run however she will need a better beginning tonight and luck from box 6 if she is to win the Oaks final.

The $35,000 Group Three Final will be race 6 on tonights program and is listed to jump at 8.28pm (SA time).

The Final field in Box Draw order is:

1.  Osakalaka  Jessica Sharp (Vic)
2.  Serene Machine  Jamie Quinlivian (Vic)
3.  Libby Raider  Paula Hearnden (SA)
4.  Hoo Gur Affair  Angela Langton (Vic)
5.  Slinky Inky  Jeff Britton (Vic)
6.  Paradiso Lass  Jeff Britton (Vic)
7.  Sassy Kist  Kiah Hurley (SA)
8.  Alpha Themis  Jeff Britton (Vic)
9.  Comaneci (1st Res)  SCR
10. Dazzling Liesel (2nd Res) SCR

2017 BGC INDUSTRIAL CLEANING SUPPLIES SA DERBY FINAL TONIGHT

There was much anticipation in the first heat of the Derby to see if Mepunga Blazer for Jeff Britton could emulate his sizzling 29.48 trial performance a few weeks ago however no one expected his blistering exhibition of speed and stamina.

The son of Barcia Bale and Mepunga Nicky began brilliantly from box 7 and speared straight to the front and from their it was all about times and margins. He won by 11 lengths in a blistering 29.25 making him one of the fastest greyhounds ever to compete on the Angle Park loam. He defeated Bundles Galore for Enzo Crudeli and Dyna Elvio for Mark Delbridge. Mepunga Blazer has drawn box 7 again tonight and it will be exciting to see what he may produce.

The second heat saw the very well named Mr Pupparazzi for Barry Riccio run home powerfully to score a super victory in a solid 30.03. Giving leaders Vanderworp for Chris Halse and Mepunga Tycoon for Jeff Britton a start he sizzled home to claim victory however box 8 in the final may be a tough ask for the NSW visitor. Vanderworp ran a nice race first up in SA leading most of the way however has been scratched from the final giving a run out of box 2 for first reserve Dyna Elvio.
The final heat saw one of the most even heats contested but it was QLD visitor Maurice Minor for Tom Tzouvelis who prevailed in a very strong performance. He ran a flying 29.64 for the 515m journey and was able to chase down early leader Black Bombshell for Enzo Crudeli in the shadows of the post for a stirring win. Alpha Aion for Jeff Britton was hard on their heels in third place with all three running brilliant times. Their performances last week put them right in contention for Derby honours tonight.

The $35,000 Group Three Final will be race 8 on the program and is listed to jump at 9.13pm (SA time).

The Final field in Box Draw order is:

1.  Bundles Galore  Enzo Crudeli (WA)
2.  Vanderworp SCR
3.  Black Bombshell  Enzo Crudeli (WA)
4.  Mepunga Tycoon  Jeff Britton (Vic)
5.  Alpha Aion  Jeff Britton (Vic)
6.  Maurice Minor  Tom Tzouvelis (Qld)
7.  Mepunga Blazer  Jeff Britton (Vic)
8.  Mr Pupparazzi  Barry Riccio (NSW)
9.  Dyna Elvio (Box 2)  Mark Delbridge (Vic)
10. Dyna Aviator (2nd Res) SCR

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below. These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017.
