 TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

A big night is on offer here at headquarters tonight.  We see the running of the Group 3 Howard Ashton Final with a more than handy $25,000 to the winner, which is race 8 on the programme. We also see two very good heats of the Shane McQueen Feature over the 600m, in races 5 & 6, and they are a must for punters. In these two races we are sure to see some very quick times carved out. Don’t forget there are First 4’s on all events as we might snare a handy one.

Race 1 we kick off with a bit of a tricky one as there are several hit and miss types.  I will stick with the pacey Allinga Val down in box 1.  She was never out of trouble here last start when well beaten but appears a chance of bouncing back.  Rhynstone Jetta was a big run when 2nd from box 8 behind the well performed Crisis Bale and is in fine form.  Add in Electro Bale and the old fellow Alderley Reform for the trifecta.  Box up 1.3.6.7.

Race 2 and Westy Bob is in outstanding form and is coming off a slick 29.67 win here last week, so we will put him on top.  Velocity Tina and the pacey Molly Dobbs are a show if they happened to step on box rise.  Box Up 2.3.4.7.

Race 3 and Rob Harnas has a handy one in Zipping Bianca, she looks the likely leader and with a bit of luck she might be able to pinch this.  The big danger will come from Dakota Barbie out in box 8.  She is another speedy type and is a chance of crossing.  Add in Starling Bale who flashed home here last start for the trifecta and First 4.  Box Up 2.3.6.8

Race 4, and this is a very open affair.  My top pick would be Sunday Shoes, but she has been VERY hit and miss of late.  BUT if she happened to step, it would be all over.  So I like Mija Returns out in box 8, she has been racing well over the staying journey and back to the sprint tonight she just needs to be close enough early.  Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 5, this is the first of the Shane McQueen heats.  In box 6, we see the exciting Texas Titan.  He began better than normal here last week and camped straight on the back of Eduardo, then went into over drive and carved out a sensational 34.73 to win by over 3L.  On that effort it’s very hard to go past him. American Tony has been a big improver over this trip in recent weeks, so we will put him in our trifecta.  Box up 3.4.6.8.

Race 6 and we have a 5 dog field in this with the scratching of Mobius, the main two to watch are Gun MacBain and Eduardo.  Both have a good turn of early pace.  The run on types will come from Zana Bale and Barely’s Rhythm.  It will be an interesting run race so if we box the above 4 up we shouldn’t miss. 1.2.4.5.

Race 7, this is another top quality FFA and he bounced back here last week with a BON win and that is our old favourite Coorong Kid.  He must have sat in his kennel all week after his defeat, stewing over things then came out and went 29.74 after missing the start.  Main dangers are the pacey Crisis Bale and Wheel Spinner for a bit of value.  Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 8, the Final of the Howard Ashton with $37,500 in total prizemoney, Connections of one of the runners will go home with a nice cheque in their pocket. Who can win for mine?? about 6 of them.  That’s how good this event has turned out.  I will go with Wilba Beast down in box 3, as he can find the fence early.  Harbormaster can sling shot from box 8 and if he gets across would take a lot of beating.  Team Roper is another who fly’s the lids so he is a must for the trifecta and First 4. Box Up 2.3.6.8

Race 9 the distance affair with 5 starters.  Crisis Tyson and Go You Girl look the main two but don’t leave out Bradley Bale who loves this trip and hasn’t missed a pay cheque in his 5 starts over the 731m, he could be our value runner.  Box Up 2.4.5. add the 1 for the First 4.

Race 10, tough race this one and I will go with Priscilla Mary one more time.  She couldn’t cross from this draw last week but when in front she tends to find a little, so we will make her our each way special.  Rue De Rose is well drawn down on the fence as is Lethal Fury.  Box Up 2.3.4.8.

Race 11 and if we are in front jump on the pacey Pistolier.  This youngster has terrific short course form and is making his city debut.  The last 100m could be our big worry.  Total Shambles is drawn for a bold showing as is Tristy Allen.  Box Up 1.2.5.6.

2016 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON FINAL TONIGHT

Last week at Angle Park there were two exciting semi finals of the 2016 Howard Ashton where the racing was tight and tough to see who qualified for tonights Group 3 final. There was a dead heat in the first semi final between Team Roper and McLaren Missile in a stirring finish running a sizzling 29.74 for the 515m journey. In the second semi final Wilba Beast was able to hold all challengers at bay and went down to the line a solid winner in a flying 29.79 ahead of Harbormaster who lost no admirers in running second.

It looks an outstanding final after the box draw was conducted with main players Paddy McBain, Wilba Beast, Team Roper and Harbormaster all drawing favourably however any one of the 8 could take out the Group 3 feature.

FABREGAL RUNS SECOND IN GROUP 2 WA OAKS

Last Saturday night at Cannington all local eyes turned to WA to see the running of the WA Oaks where local speedster Fabregal for trainer Robyn Mackellar took on the best bitches going around in the Group 2 feature. Fabregal began nicely and all but crossed on the first turn however was caught a little wide and dropped in just behind the leaders. She made a strong challenge late in the race but just failed, dead heating for second in a super finish. A great effort in WA after racing with success locally and in Queensland so no doubt fans and connections will be looking forward to the return home.

PATHWAY RACING UPDATE

In January 2016, Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) introduced the Pathway Racing concept, which aims to provide regular and ongoing racing opportunities for lower class and out of form greyhounds. Whilst the initial stages of the trial appeared very successful, the transition to a flattened stakemoney structure has not been as well received by participants as anticipated. In response to this decline in support, GRSA will implement a new stakemoney structure (refer table below), slightly alter the way races are selected and extend the trial period of the Pathway Racing concept to 31st July, 2016 when a full review will take place.

Another important change that participants should be aware of, is that the Grader will now draw all eligible greyhounds into Pathway races, unless ‘NO PATHWAY’ is stipulated on the nominations. As such, participants should be diligent when nominating for meetings where Pathway races have been advertised.

These changes will be effective from the Angle Park meeting on Wednesday 8th June. Nominations close on Friday 3rd June.

SUMMARY OF CHANGES – effective Friday 3rd June 2016

·        Increased stakemoney allocation for first place

·        Greyhounds will be included in Pathway Races if eligible (unless ‘NO PATHWAY’ on nomination)

·        Selection of races – greater emphasis on one trainer per race and worst to best form with SA Bred preferences included

·        Trial period extended to 31st July 2016

STAKEMONEY SCHEDULE (As of 1/6/16)

ELIGIBILITY TO COMPLETE

·         Pathway Racing events will only be for Maiden, Grade 6 and Grade 5 greyhounds at the track

·         Greyhounds must have started in South Australia on four occassions to be eligible for these races (First starters and greyhounds with one, two or three starts will not be considered for these events)

·         Greyhounds must not have run faster than the below time standards at their past four starts:

·         Pathway Racing aims to ensure maximum participation, therefore the Grader will endeavour to include all trainers entering at least one greyhound, prior to including multiple greyhounds from the same trainer

·         Fields will be selected worst form to best form in the opinion of the Grader. The Order of Preference is not be used for Pathway Racing

·         Grade 6 and Grade 5 Pathway races will carry no penalty however where Grade 6 greyhounds compete in Grade 5 events and are successful they will become a Grade 5 at the track and ineligible for Grade 6 events at the track. (Normal rules apply for Maiden events)
