TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Highlights a plenty here at headquarters tonight,  we have 5 very good heats of the John Gray, add to that the SA Sprint final which has a more than a  handy $15,000 to the winner  in a top quality line up.  Also on the card is a 600m and 731m event. Now let’s back some winners!

Race 1, we kick off with the Janice Jones trained High Eden Snow from the rails draw, he is very smart when left alone early and is boxed to win.  Molly Dobbs has become the punters nightmare as he bobs up at big odds so we must put him in again.  Box up the inside brigade. 1.2.3.4.

Race 2, this is a toughie, I will stick with one I tipped last week in Springvale Paris, she led for one stride and then was checked out the back.  She will be good odds again and is a chance in an open affair.  Stick Figure and Cairnlea Ollie will be right in the mix.  Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 3, the Ben Rawlings kennel has a smart one in Snakebite Bale, he has won 4 from 4 here, all in quick times and tonight should be no different.  He looks a stand out but will be skinny odds.  Cyclone Clifford will be running on and can fill a place.   1 from 4.6.8 boxed.

Race 4  - The old fellow in Gun McBain can return to the winners circle from the inside draw, he is a marvellous old fellow and can win.  Fly As One has struggled at his past couple but is an improver.   Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 5 - I like the bookends in Yesteryear and Bella Trix, the latter who has early pace and from the wide draw is a chance of pinching this.  Zipping Prince will be running on and is a must for the trifecta.  Box Up 1.5.6.8.

Race 6,  good even event and I will go with the pacey Nit Noi in box 2.  She isn’t the strongest but might skip away with a big break.  Wayne’s Error is in fine form of late and will be charging home.  Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 7 and the pacey Fabregal has been in fine form of late and should prove the measuring stick in this.  She carved out quick sectionals last start when rundown in quick time.  We will put her on top, Trace Amount has been racing well as is Relton.  Box Up 4.6.7.8.

Race 8 - the Final of the SA Sprint and the champ in Worm Burner bounced back with a slick win here last week and from box 1 will be very hard to beat again. The big danger is Marlow Brown who carved out a BON 29.70 here last week from box 8.  He has tremendous box manners and is right in this. Texas Titan will get a long way back but is a value runner for the pick 4 as he will be flying home late.  Box Up 1.3.5.8.

Race 9, this is the 600m affair and we will go with Sutton Steele, he is quick early and loves a wide draw.  Zipping Gator was a last start winner over the sprint and the extra distance shouldn’t be a worry.  Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 10, Springvale Bryne can return to the winners circle with the absence of Bogie Bekim, she can take up the early lead and be too strong. Go You Girl loves to fill a place as does Keroma Storm.  6 from 4.2.1

Race 11 and we can go home on a winning note with the pacey Are Ate out in box 8.  He should find this more to his liking.  Pelican Keeping is a must and good odds and a win wouldn’t be a surprise despite his poor draw of 4.   Box Up 4.5.7.8.

The Trainers Fee will be paid upstairs by Hospitality staff between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

GRSA apologises if this causes inconvenience tonight.

2017 BARGAIN STEEL CENTRE SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL TONIGHT

The best locally trained sprinters in the State gathered at Angle Park last week in two heats of the Bargain Steel Centre SA Sprint Championships.

The fastest qualifier for tonight’s final was the Paula Hearnden trained Marlow Brown in the second heat who sizzled around the Angle Park loam in a slick 29.70. Marlow Brown landed second from box rise hot on the heels of leader Aston Kody for Troy Murray and it looked like the two favourites were going to have a ding dong battle however Aston Kody sustained an injury entering the back straight leaving Marlow Brown with clear running over the concluding stages. He won by 1 length from Coorong Kid for Cameron Butcher who looks to be getting back to his brilliant best and Run The Jewels for Lauren Harris ran another nice race grabbing third.

In the first heat all eyes were on superstar sprinter Worm Burner for trainer Cameron Butcher. He had drawn perfectly in box 8 however after surprisingly missing the placings two weeks ago some form judges were wondering if he had come back to his brilliant best after the spider bite incident a few months ago. On dispatch he began nicely with the early lead taken up by Allinga Val for Yvonne King and Crisis Bale for Lisa Rasmussen. Down the back straight Worm Burner had got himself to the outside and looked like picking the leaders up easily however off the back straight he went for a needle eye opening on the inside with many favourite punters holding their breath as the field turned for home. Worm Burner shoulder his way through and quickly accelerated picking up Allinga Val near the finishing line to go on and win by almost 1 length in a flying 29.77. Allinga Val was super in the lead and will take some catching in the final tonight while last years Sprint Champion Mrs Bubbles for Matty Payne ran another honest race grabbing third place and will look to defend her title. Worm Burner has drawn box 1 tonight and it seems only bad luck can beat him however he can occasionally find some trouble on the inside so the first 100 metres will be very interesting.

The $22,000 Listed feature will be race 8 on the program tonight and is listed to jump at 9.13pm (SA time).

JOHN GRAY HEATS TONIGHT WITH FINAL ON JANUARY 26

It will be a huge night of racing on Thursday January 26 (Australia Day) at Angle Park with the running of the $8,565 John Gray Final.

This event is for Grade 5 greyhounds over the 515m and has always been well supported by the Industry with 5 heats tonight. Who will join last year’s winner Are Ate, on the honour roll for this year?

A special mention to the AGRC who again are supporting the John Gray Final in 2017 and have been great supporters of this race for many years. Special thanks to local racing identity Ron Johnson who kindly donates a trophy each year for the winning connections.

The box draw for next week’s final will be conducted on course tonight after the running of Race 9.

BOGIE BEKIM IN PERTH ON SATURDAY NIGHT

The Ben Rawlings trained Bogie Bekim will be on the Perth Galaxy trail on Saturday night at Cannington when he competes over the staying trip in race 3.

He has drawn box 6 due to start at 10.20pm SA Time.  He has been in brilliant form over the 731m at Angle Park and a good result in the west will see him again a berth in the Group 1 Galaxy heats on Saturday week. We wish all concerned the best of luck.

SATURDAY MORNING TRIALS PROCEDURE

With some recent issues in regard to the Saturday morning trials at Angle Park, trial staff have advised that to make it simpler and clearer for participants and employees that there will be one block per distance where FOL, Catching Pen, Handlsips etc will be booked rather than having this separated. Trainers will get their number as normal for that distance and no one else will have the same number over that distance to stop any confusion. As per normal after every 10 trials there will be a track grade and they then move to the next distance (likely starting with 515m). GRSA will trial this for a period of time and I ask that participants please be patient with their fellow industry members and GRSA staff.

MARK AISTON TO FILL IN WHEN RAY FEWINGS ON LEAVE IN JANUARY

Our long time MC at Angle Park Ray Fewings will be taking some leave in this month and we are fortunate to have radio and TV personality Mark Aiston available to fill in while Ray is away. Mark has supported and followed greyhound racing for many years and it is terrific to have him on board. Mark will be hosting tonight and on 26th January along with the 2nd February while Ray is away.

BLACK CAPS NOW AVAILABLE FROM GRSA

Along with the white caps GRSA has now approved that black caps can be worn by participants. Both black and white caps with GRSA logos are available from GRSA at a cost of $10.

AGRC MEMBERS LUCKY DOG DRAW

Each year we have drawn 4 names for each week’s Thursday APK race 8, next to each name is the box number of the dog you have drawn in Race 8.

If your box number happens to win Race 8, you can renew your membership next year (30th June) for half price. If you happen to own or train greyhounds racing on the date that your name has been drawn, you can choose to have your dogs drawn instead of the lucky box number and it works the same if your dog drawn happens to win.  It is up to you to notify an AGRC committee member on the night that you want to take up this option and we will randomly draw one of your dogs competing on the night. AGRC Committee members are Alan Amezdroz, Barry Stewart, Petar Jovanovic, Melissa Trowbridge, Gabe Vistolli and Gavin Harris.
