TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

What a huge night of racing we have tonight, 2 heats of the 2017 Coffex Coffee SA Oaks and 3 heats of the 2017 BGC Industrial Cleaning Supplies Derby, a big contingent of interstaters have arrived to try and claim these prestigious events. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events so it makes for a terrific night of punting.

Race 1 - The Jovanovic kennel can kick us off with an early winner with the inform Cairnlea Ollie out in box 6, he charged home here last start to run a very good 2nd behind Hesa Marlow and can go one better tonight. Mr. Arjay looks the improver from a good draw and is a must from his inside box, add Tommy’s Tune for value. Box Up 1.4.6.8. Remember the guaranteed Trifecta pool of $10,000 for this race.

Race 2 - The 1st heat of the Oaks and I will stick with the Angela Langton trained Hoo Gur Affair out in box 8, she has had a look at the track and flew home late to run a very good 2nd , she is very smart when on song and looks very hard to beat. Slinky Inky stumbled on box rise here 2 weeks ago and worked home late from box 1, she is another who will improve after that run and will be doing her best work over the last 100m. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 3 - The 2nd of the Oaks heats and the Jeffrey Britton team have travelled from Victoria with a very strong team and they should go very close with Paradiso Lass out in box 7, she has won 6 from 21 along with 6 placings, she has had a trial here which is a big positive. Kennel mate Alpha Themis was very unlucky here 2 weeks ago after being checked from pillar to post and is a lot better than her effort that night, she is more than capable of running a bold race if able to lead. Box Up 3.6.7.8.

Race 4 - This appears a very open affair with a heap of chances, I will go with the newcomer in Fox Gambler who has won his past 2 at the Gardens in NSW, he should be able to kick up early and take beating from the rails draw. Heading My Way returned to the winner’s circle with a good win here in 29.90 from this draw last start and can’t be dismissed.   Add Windmill Haze who will be the one rattling home out wide late for the trifecta. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 5 - The 1st of the Derby heats and it’s very hard to go past Mepunga Blazer, he trialled here in an outstanding 29.48 back on the 31st of last month then followed up with a very nice 2nd at Sandown in a slick 29.03, he has won 9 from 18 and should start a very short price favourite in this we will put him on top. Local performer Stitch ‘Em Up is racing well and the home track advantage is always in his favour, he is a must for our trifecta on his last 4 wins here and Gawler. Add in Chardy who has good short form for the top 3. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 6 – The 2nd  of the Derby heats and we will go with Dyna Dean for the Delbridge kennel, he was a last start winner at The Meadows in a BON 29.98 and made short work of that field, he can be hit and miss on box rise but is very strong. Vaderworp has been well travelled and is boxed for a bold showing from his draw of 1, we can’t forget the NSW performer Mr Pupparazzi who has 5 wins from his 12 starts and 4 placings, he can run time and he will be right in the mix at each way odds. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 7 and the 3rd and final heat of the Derby and this looks a wide-open affair, we will go with Maurice Minor from box 4 who has ventured down to SA from QLD, he trialled here in 29.70 at his 1st look. He is a winner of 8 from 21 along with 7 placings and is sure to run a bold race. WA performer Black Bombshell has strong Cannington form and with a recent trial here looks the improver. Box Up 4.5.6.8.

Race 8 - On Fire returned to the winner’s circle here last week with a good win in 29.90 over Jacqui Blax, from box 5 he is drawn to go wide early and will take a power of beating again. Cairnlea Kenny has been missing the start of late but from his rails draw can finish in the placings. Jimmy Newob has terrific short course form in Victoria and might be able to run a cheeky race out in front. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 9 - This is the 600m affair of the night and the John Westerlo trained Flawless Bling should prove the measuring stick, he won at Sandown 2 runs back in 34.43 and appears well drawn on his Angle Park debut. Sutton Steele should set the early pace and is a must for trifecta punters, add last start winner Zero Knockin’ who loves this trip. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 10 - I love dogs that run on and we will go with the John Mundy trained Dashing Djay down in box 1, he continues to be hit and miss on box rise and he looks the value runner in this. Demon Premier is very smart when on song but has proven very costly with punters at his past couple. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 11 and Disaaci is the form runner in this and looks to have the early pace despite his poor draw of box 5, he has a couple of moderate beginners on his inside and should salute the judge. My roughie in this is Molly Dobbs who has been struggling of late, he is a chance at big odds with luck. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

2017 COFFEX COFFEE SA OAKS HEATS

After the delay of the SA Oaks series last week we were pleased to get two excellent heats this week for the Group 3 feature.
The quality is terrific and it all goes well for an outstanding final next week.
Heat 1 features Victorian Hoo Gur Affair for Angela Langton and Slinky Inky for Jeff Britton who both competed two weeks ago and suffered surprise defeats. They should be better for the experience and expect improvement tonight. Crystal Bling is only lightly raced for Victorian trainer John Westerlo however she has had a couple of looks at the track and with an inside draw should run a bold race. Last start winner Dazzling Liesel for trainer Ken Trowbridge looks the best of the locals however will need some luck from her wide draw.
Heat 2 and talented Victorian Paradiso Lass looks the testing material for trainer Jeff Britton. She trialled at Angle Park two weeks ago in 30.15 so she should be cherry ripe tonight. She was placed in the Group 1 Maturity at the Meadows so she has a class edge on her rivals. Victorian Osakalaka for Jessica Sharp who came through the recent Speedstar series at Sandown and Comaneci for Queensland trainer Tom Tzouvelis look strong chances along with local hope Libby Raider for Paula Hearnden who could sneak a place.
GRSA would like to thank all local and interstate trainers and connections for supporting tonight’s Oaks series. Without your support this prestigious event may not have gone ahead.
The first four from each heat will qualify for the $35,000 Group 3 Coffex Coffee SA Oaks Final next week with the box draw to be conducted oncourse after race 4.

2017 BGC INDUSTRIAL CLEANING SUPPLIES SA DERBY HEATS

If you thought the heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks were going to be exciting and produce ultra-competitive racing then the heats of the BGC SA Derby looks just as enthralling.
The anticipation will be electric as some of the best young local sprinters do battle with greyhounds from Victoria, Queensland, NSW and Western Australia.
Heat 1 features Victorian flyer Mepunga Blazer for Jeff Britton who trialled in a brilliant 29.48 two weeks ago and ran second in the Speedstar Open event at Sandown against local series hope Stitch ‘Em Up for Ken Gill. Stich ‘Em Up has won his last 4 starts and now takes the big step to Group 3 company. WA performer Bundles Galore for Enzo Crudeli could surprise from his inside draw.
Heat 2 and talented Victorian Dyna Dean for Mark Delbridge looks a strong contender after his brilliant win at the Meadows recently in 29.98. The race is full of chance’s with Vanderworp and Backpacker Jack from WA, Manifold and Mepunga Tycoon from Victoria and the impressive and well named Mr. Pupparazzi for NSW trainer Barry Riccio. The best of the locals look to be Cairnlea Gump for Petar Jovanovic.
The last heat also has plenty of chances and some very exciting chasers. Maurice Minor for QLD trainer Tom Tzouvelis trialled here last week in a slick 29.70 and is fresh from his stylish Ipswich Derby win.
Poke The Bear for trainer Gerry O’Keefe from Victoria is only lightly raced but could not have been more impressive in winning at the Meadows last start. Black Bombshell for Enzo Crudeli from WA has an outstanding record with 8 wins from 14 starts and did trial solidly last week at headquarters. Locals Emerley Nolen, Half A Mill and Long Gully Pete are all nice types but will need to be at their best to qualify.
The first two from each heat along with the two fastest thirds will qualify for the $35,000 Group 3 BGC Industrial Cleaning Supplies SA Derby Final next week. The box draw will be conducted oncourse after the running of Race 8.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below. These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.
Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
