TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight’s racing has brought together quality spread throughout the evening.  We all had to pause last week when Worm Burner finished unplaced, but he can bounce back in the 5th tonight from box 8.  The champ doesn’t take defeat lightly. Texas Titan was one of the biggest runs I have seen in a long time when he won at Gawler last start in quick time. He must have caught the Gawler train into the back as he was a mile from the leader and rattled home to win, He fronts up in race 6.  Add to that the distance debut of Bogie Bekim here last week, when he led throughout to win by over 9 lengths in a slick 43.11 and looks to have stamped his authority as the new stayer on the block.

Race 1 and age shall not weary him and that is Gun McBain.  The old fellow appears well suited here out in box 8 and can lead and win.  The main dangers look to be Cyclone Clifford who will be flying home and What’s Up Herbie.  Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 2 - This is a very open affair with at least 5 chances so for me it’s a good First 4 event.  The new comer in Dyna Yamba will be our value runner.  He hasn’t raced since September last year in Victoria so we have to put him in.  Play Alone is well drawn and is more than capable when on song.  Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 3 and I like a roughie in this in Springvale Paris, she won here two starts back in handy time and with moderate beginners around her she might be able to lead and win.  Windmill Haze has only had a handful of starts and looks to be a promising type and he should be right in the finish.  Box up 2.4.5.6.

Race 4 is another toughie and this will be a good trifecta and first 4 betting affair.  Relton is very hit and miss but should find this a lot easier than his past couple.  Expect a big improvement from him tonight.  Dixie Anne and Zipping Gator are in the same category. Box Up 2.3.6.8

Race 5, he was beaten here last week and that is the champ Worm Burner.  But rarely does he run out of the money twice in a row, he should bounce back and show his true form.  Allinga Val is a pacey type and Caustic Bale will be running on late.  Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 6, this looks a two dog race with the book ends in Aston Kody and Marlow Brown both having terrific early pace, they are very hard to separate for mine.   Run The Jewels is our value runner at big odds.  She is in terrific form and will be running on late.  Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 7 - venture out to Trace Amount in box 8, She has been racing well of late and has the early pace to cross and win.  Mclaren Chief tends to find trouble in his races but is a place hope with early luck.  Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 8 - High Eden Snow is a youngster with a big future and from his wide draw tonight will take a power of beating again.  Molly Dobbs can never be overlooked as he bobs up at big odds from time to time so he has to be put into the trifectas.  Box Up 2.3.5.8.

Race 9 - the Distance affair and as mentioned earlier the Ben Rawlings trained Bogie Bekim scorched the  track with a slick 43.11 win here last week winning by over 9 Lengths, he is hard to tip against on that effort.  Springvale Bryne is the danger and Parsec Bale will be the flying home late out wide.  Take all the evens 2.4.6.8.

Race 10 - the Rasmussen kennel might have a handy night and we will go with a newcomer in Top Weight from their kennel, he has won 4 from 28 along with 9 placings and is sure to be well tried on debut.  Another of their runners in Dyna Chirpy is well boxed down on the fence and can’t be left out.  Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 11 - I like the inside three with Wayne’s Error our top pick.  He is drawn to be with them early and send us home on a winning note.  Flying Mal and Hesa Jayclo will be running on.  Box Up 1.2.3.6.

In the second heat it looks a match race between Aston Kody off the red and Marlow Brown from the pink however the likes of experienced campaigners Texas Titan and Coorong Kid cannot be left out along with the improving Run The Jewels and Dyna Keitaro who is now in the care of the flying Lisa Rasmussen team.

The first four from each heat will progress through to next week’s final run on Thursday 19th January worth $22,000.

The Box Draw will be conducted oncourse tonight after the running of Race 8.

GREYHOUND OF THE YEAR ON FRIDAY 10TH FEBRUARY AT GAWLER

The date has been set for the Greyhound of the Year function at Gawler on Friday night 10th February 2017. It will be exciting to have our prestigious event at the Gawler venue for the first time with the awards looking very interesting this year.

To assist with the promotion of the evet GRSA called all the race names on Monday night at Angle Park after past GOTY winners. It will be also our intention to do this again on a Thursday night in a lead up to our Night of Nights and recognize our past champions.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE INDUSTRY AWARD NOMINATION FORM

As part of the GOTY awards GRSA present an Outstanding Service to the Industry Award and are calling for nominations. Nomination forms are available on line and from the Racing Office at GRSA.

Please forward your nomination to [email protected], fax (08) 8268 2870 or GRSA, PO Box 2352, Regency Park, 5942 by COB Friday January 20 2017.  The winner to be announced at the 2016 Greyhound of the Year Awards Dinner held on Feb 10, 2017.  The decision of the judging panel will be final.

SATURDAY MORNING TRIALS PROCEDURE

With some recent issues in regard to the Saturday morning trials at Angle Park, trial staff have advised that to make it simpler and clearer for participants and employees that there will be one block per distance where FOL, Catching Pen, Handlsips etc will be booked rather than having this separated. Trainers will get their number as normal for that distance and no one else will have the same number over that distance to stop any confusion. As per normal after every 10 trials there will be a track grade and they then move to the next distance (likely starting with 515m). GRSA will trial this for a period of time and I ask that participants please be patient with their fellow industry members and GRSA staff.

MARK AISTON TO FILL IN WHEN RAY FEWINGS ON LEAVE IN JANUARY

Our long time MC at Angle Park Ray Fewings will be taking some leave in this month and we are fortunate to have radio and tv personality Mark Aiston available to fill in while Ray is away. Mark has supported and followed greyhound racing for many years and it is terrific to have him on board. Mark will be hosting tonight and on 19th and 26th January along with the 2nd February while Ray is away.

BLACK CAPS NOW AVAILABLE FROM GRSA

Along with the white caps GRSA has now approved that black caps can be worn by participants. Both black and white caps with GRSA logos are available from GRSA at a cost of $10.

GRADING UPDATES

The Grading Review Panel met on Friday 11th November to discuss grading in South Australia from an Agenda provided by submissions and industry consultation during the past few months. Following is the main points introduced from 1st December 2016 -

  • The panel advised to be consistent that Grade 6 greyhounds should remain in the drawn fields so long as they were eligible at time of nomination. This would be a change for the 4 win Non SA Bred Grade 6 greyhounds and APK/APM Grade 5 wins who would have normally been withdrawn free of penalty. The panel were supportive of these greyhounds remaining eligible.
  • Pathway winners should be included on the Order of Preference. Regardless of the winners time the performance will be considered as a Country win (like Pt Augusta) and thus will sit on the Order of Preference at 13 if a last start Pathway winner.
  • The table below is in regard to a Time Standard for Masters Events at different tracks over different distances. The panel agreed to the table and advised that the same conditions for Thursday night be implemented for other meetings when a greyhound equals or breaks the Time Standard being ineligible for a Masters Event at that distance and track. Whilst they do not take a grade they have to have two unplaced runs before being considered for a Masters event.

This refers to the Grade 5 Masters events Only.

  • The panel agreed to change the condition of eligibility from 3 months to 6 months for how long prior to a greyhound racing. This comes into line with the 6 month satisfactory trial policy.

**Please note that the GRP were supportive of trainers putting as much information in the comments section of their nomination to assist the Grader in the grading process. Please give him as many options as possible however if trainers write nothing the grader will grade accordingly. If trainers nominate for a specific race advertised in the All tracks calendar and it doesn’t go ahead it is recommended trainers give the Grader another option on their nomination. If trainers do not want their greyhounds to be mixed then they need to be clear on their nomination advising “leaving the greyhound out” and understand that the races will be graded accordingly and if you were going to be in a mixed event under normal grading guidelines then the greyhound will be left out**

AGRC MEMBERS LUCKY DOG DRAW

Each year we have drawn 4 names for each week’s Thursday APK race 8, next to each name is the box number of the dog you have drawn in Race 8.  If your box number happens to win Race 8, you can renew your membership next year (30th June) for half price.

If you happen to own or train greyhounds racing on the date that your name has been drawn, you can choose to have your dogs drawn instead of the lucky box number and it works the same if your dog drawn happens to win.  It is up to you to notify an AGRC committee member on the night that you want to take up this option and we will randomly draw one of your dogs competing on the night. AGRC Committee members are Alan Amezdroz, Barry Stewart, Petar Jovanovic, Melissa Trowbridge, Gabe Vistolli and Gavin Harris.
