TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Well its final night of the UBET Sprint and Distance and both events look terrific, the Distance affair has a couple of main chances in Bogie Bekim and Purpose Driven but as we all know there has been many an upset over the years so it makes for a good First Four event. The Sprint is race 8 on the programme and it’s very hard to go past the Cameron Butcher star in ON FIRE, he charged home to win in a slick 29.54 here last week and has drawn the rails, the main danger for mine looks to be High Eden Frost out in box 7.  The kennel to follow tonight is the Jamie Quinlivian team. Don’t forget about the guaranteed $10,000 Trifecta pool on Race 1 tonight!!!

Race 1 - Brick Lane was severely checked here last start after leading early and is boxed for a bold showing from the 1, he should be able to hold the early lead and pinch this. The dangers will come from Windmill Haze and Spring Bloom. Box Up 1.2.5.6.

Race 2 - This is a wide-open affair but we will stick with Allen Jono who was a last start winner here in moderate time, he has the form on the board as he has been in the money 9 of his 10 starts at this track. Rip It Ralph can improve from the draw but is hit and miss on box rise. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 3 - I like one in this at each way odds and that is Molly Dobbs, she resumed here last week from injury and ran a handy 4th behind Signal Peak, she can lead these despite the tricky draw and hold on. Disaaci will be rattling home late and is a must for the trifecta. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

Race 4 - Tough race with a heap of chances so it is a must for trifecta and first Four punters, Kung Fu Mary has been struggling of late but will find this more to her liking. Keno Bale doesn’t win many but loves to fill a place and will be running on late, add Kenzi and Todd Bless for the minors. Box Up 1.2.3.5 (good luck)

Race 5 and this is a terrific 600m affair, I will go with Signal Peak who has been racing well over the sprint and he should open up early and go on and win. Keroma Storm is always around the mark and is a veteran of 102 starts, he tends to get a long way back but runs on strongly. Its Classified is a very smart performer and has won in very smart times over this trip but is injury prone. Box Up 1.2.4.8.

Race 6 - The final of the UBET Distance, Purpose Driven charged home over the top of them last week to win easy in 43.51, she has won 5 of 7 here at this trip and should start the punters elect on her recent form. Bogie Bekim resumed from a lengthy lay off and showed mid race dash but faded and will only be improved by the solid hit out, these 2 look the main chances who could go on and represent South Australia in the Nationals. Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 7 - Veteran trainer Terry Cahalan has a handy type in Blitz And Bolt, he found a heap of trouble here last start when 3rd over the 600m, he drops back to the sprint tonight and is drawn for a bold showing.  Bella Trix saluted the judge for us last week at each way odds and can run into the placings from her wide draw.  Add Becky Bale for a bit of value for the trifecta. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 8 - The final of the UBET Sprint and as mentioned earlier it is very hard to go past On Fire, he has a terrific record of 28 wins from his 45 career starts and strung together 13 on the trot, he carved out a slick 29.54 here last week in the heats and should prove very hard to beat again from the draw. High Eden Frost is a smart beginner and has been in the money at 18 of his 23 starts at this track, he would need to be at his best to pip the favourite and his recent form is 1st class. Add Cairnlea Kenny and Dyna Keitaro for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.7.8

Race 9 - There is a lot of pace in this but we will stick with Jacqui Blax as she has been very good to us in recent weeks, she is a pacey type and was a last start winner here in a very quick 29.67 on that effort she will be hard to beat .Allen Terminator has won his last 3 at Gawler over the short and should run a cheeky race from the draw .Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 10 - The Tony Rasmussen team rarely go home without a winner and they can win the last with the ultra-consistent Greysynd Gem, she has been in the money at her last 6 runs at this venue and has the pace to lead and win. Kennel mate Dyna Parlance is the danger as he will be running on late over the top of them.  Box Up 1.4.5.6.

2017 UBET NATIONAL SPRINT & DISTANCE

CHAMPIONSHIPS STATE FINALS

Another fantastic night of racing at headquarters last week where the State finals of the National Sprint and Distance were determined with the winners tonight to represent South Australia in Queensland at the end of the month.

The Sprint heats were first with High Eden Frost for Jan Jones setting the tempo of the night with a brilliant performance in leading most of the way in a slick 29.78 in winning by 3 lengths from Shimatron and Tommy’s Tune.

The challenge was then set for leading local sprinter On Fire to see what he could do in the second heat and he didn’t disappoint. The Cameron Butcher trained flyer began well from box 2 and settled third early before sprouting wings down the back straight and hitting the front, from there he also raced away to win in easy fashion in a sizzling 29.54 from Cairnlea Kenny and Aston Amon.

The box draw has created even more interest with On Fire drawing the inside box. The last time he drew the red he was spat out the back in a 5 dog field and had to run a massive race to get over the line so the start will play a huge part in tonight’s high quality final.

The box draw for the 2017 UBET National Sprint Championship State Final was conducted on track:

1. On Fire Cameron Butcher
2. Cairnlea Kenny  Petar Jovanovic
3. Aston Amon  Troy Murray
4. Dream A Little  Jan Jones
5. Tommy’s Tune  Lisa Rasmussen
6. Shimatron  Tony Rasmussen
7. High Eden Frost  Jan Jones
8. Dyna Keitaro Lisa Rasmussen
9. Rockstar Lisa(res) SCR
10. Brick Lane (res)       SCR

There were only 7 runners for the Distance heat with all starters progressing through to tonights State final however it gave an indication on what we could expect. Purpose Driven for Cameron Butcher was very professional in his win running a solid 43.51 in winning by just over 3 lengths.  However race favourite Bogie Bekim who was returning from a spell showed he will likely gain plenty of benefit from the run. The Group 1 winner for Ben Rawlings ran a solid second but never really changed gears throughout which is normally a feature of this brilliant stayer. Not to forget about Springvale Carla who made the step up to the open staying ranks with super run to grab third.

The box draw for the 2017 UBET National Distance Championship State Final was conducted on track:

1. Hukanui  Tony Rasmussen
2. Roxy Rolla  Tony Rasmussen
3. Springvale Carla  Gavin Harris
4. Bogie Bekim  Ben Rawlings
5. Vacant Box
6. Purpose Driven  Cameron Butcher
7. Springvale Bryne  Gavin Harris
8. Caprice Monelli Tony Rasmussen
9. N/A
10. N/A

Each winner of the State finals tonight will represent South Australia at the UBET Group 1 National Championships to be run on Friday 25th August at Albion Park.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking affect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below.

These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.
Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:
1. Combined claim limit of $800 for all veterinary and transport expenses
2. Removal of the advanced application process for the breeders rebate now that both sires and breeding females must be registered
3. Removal of the cap on litters in anticipation of national (tiered) breeder licensing

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support. (GRSA will back date any payments missed over the last few months)

NEW WINNING POST FOR ANGLE PARK THIS MONTH –

ANGLE PARK SHUTDOWN FOR 2 WEEKS

The New Winning Post will be installed this month however for this to occur Angle Park will be out of action for almost two weeks.

To best fit in with the schedule this will be done immediately after the State Finals of the Nationals tonight giving sufficient time prior to the Oaks and Derby series in early September. Across are the racing and trial dates during the period of 11th August through until 24th August (we hope to be back trialling at Angle Park on Tuesday 22nd August).

BRENDAN LINES - FINAL NIGHT TONIGHT

With the shutdown of Angle Park to update the winning post it has also provided time for GRSA to update the audio at the venue which has needed attention for some time.

The system will provide better quality due to upgraded equipment however will become a more automated system. With GRSA taking this step long time contractor Brendan Lines, who has worked with GRSA since 2004 maintaining the audio will no longer be required.  This has been a business decision and we would like to thank Brendan for his professionalism and loyalty for more than 10 years. He has been on hand for all of our major meetings and functions and has troubleshot many problems ensuring the very best of quality has been maintained for industry and patrons alike using outdated systems. GRSA wishes Brendan every success in his future endeavors and appreciates his efforts over the journey.
