TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

How good has the racing been at headquarters in recent weeks, and it continues again tonight with three classy heats of the 2016 Coffex Coffee SA Oaks. Races 5, 6 and 7 are the heats and there is a good mixture of local and interstate performers.  Race 8 we get to see the Sprint champion of Australia in Worm Burner, didn’t he give the interstaters a huge touch up last Saturday night when he carved out a sensational time of 29.17 and made it 11 wins in a row. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First 4 events.

Race 1 – a very open race to kick the night off with as there are several chances.  Dodger I Am will start the punters elect and he is in the powerful Butcher kennel so he is a must for the trifecta. Zipping Geoff is in form as is the Johnstone team.  Box Up 3.4.5.8.

Race 2, it doesn’t get any easier in this but for me these make terrific First 4 races.  The main hopes look to be the pacey Skatey Perry and Fabrevale.  They look the two that will be up there early.  Add in the well-drawn Temerity for the ones to have a wager on.  Box Up 1.3.5.8

Race 3, this is a very smart distance affair and two of these runners ran a place in last Saturdays National Distance Championship. I will go with both the performers in Parsec Bale and Springvale Bryne.  They flew the flag last start and look primed for this.  We can’t leave out Luna Jinx who will be high flying over the last 100m.  Box Up 1.4.6.7

Race 4 - he won here last start from box 7and that is Regal Looper.  He has struck form and has improved his box manners, so he is my top pick.  Fusaichi Kahn is the improver and Dana Jorja is a must as she is very pacey.  Box Up 2.3.4.8.

Race 5, the first of the Oaks heats, I will have a wager on Times Square. She has a heap of ability and ran 3rd here last start behind Worm Burner.  Wynburn Toozie has been well travelled in recent months and is boxed for a bold showing.  Box Up 1.3.6.8

Race 6, the 2nd of the Oaks heats and get on Fabregal.  She has been racing against the best in Australia and for mine she is well suited in this and should take a power of beating despite the poor draw.  Shelley Keeping has handy Victorian form and can’t be dismissed.  Box Up 1.3.5.7

Race 7, the final of the 3 heats and I like the inside three.  They are all interstaters and will be right in the mix.  Fanta Bale for the Robbie Britton kennel ran a more than handy 29.63 here and on her early pace will be the measuring stick and should only improve on the run.  Mahalo Miss is from the Apple isle and she should be well acclimatised as she has been here from early last month.  Add in Cavalclade from the strong Glenn Rounds kennel and we shouldn’t miss.  Box Up 1.2.3.6

Race 8 and we should all be watching the Australian sprint champion parade in Worm Burner, he made it a one act affair beating the best sprinters in the land here last Saturday night from box 6 in a magnificent 29.17 and who would tip against him… he wins again.  So he is our stand out.  Marlow Brown keeps on finding trouble in his race but is always a chance as is Mrs. Bubbles who is dropping back in distance.   4 from 1.3.8.

Race 9, Gun MacBain can return to the winners circle from a favourable draw tonight.  He has the pace to kick up and score.  Lobo Loco hasn’t raced since July and is my Roughie of the night if there is an upset in this.  Box Up 1.3.5.7

Race 10, this is a more than handy race with at least 4 main chances and they all are drawn from box 5 inwards.  I will go with Official Label for the Steven Brook kennel he is very strong and is in fine form.  Retro Flyer has struck form with two last start wins here and keeps on improving.  Box Up 2.3.4.5

Race 11 and we will have a wager on Coast, he hasn’t missed a pay cheque at his last 5 starts here and has the pace to lead and win in this.  Sparkling Red will be running on late and should add value for our trifecta.   Box Up 2.3.4.5

2016 COFFEX COFFEE OAKS – HEATS TONIGHT

Spring racing really heats up tonight with three heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks with some of the best young female chasers in the country competing to make it through to the Group 3 final next week.

The first heat tonight is race 5 on the card due to jump at 8.12pm (SA time) and features the clash between Wynburn Toozie for Victorian trainer Kel Greenough and WA sprinter Times Square for Chris Halse.

The second heat sees local hope Fabregal for Robyn Mackellar chasing Oaks glory and looks the best hope for SA in the series.

In heat 3 it looks another great clash with two strong Victorians doing battle in Fanta Bale for Rob Britton and Cavalcade for Glen Rounds.

The first two and two fastest thirds from each heat will qualify for next weeks final. We will conduct the box draw on track tonight after the running of race eight. Next Thursday night’s Coffex Coffee Oaks Final carries a total purse of $35,000, with the winner to receive $25,000 in the Group Three event.
