TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The 2017 Howard Ashton final is race 8 on tonight’s 12 event programme and there look to be a heap of chances in the $25.000 to the winner final. Ben Rawlings has 2 major players in Crunchin Numbers and Deputy Speaker both won their respective semis in good fashion here last week and is sure to be right in the finish once again. Other highlights on the program are 2 very strong heats of the Shane McQueen over the 600m which are race’s 5 and 6. The kennel to follow for the night looks to be the Cameron Butcher team which looks to have several strong chances.

Race 1 - It’s always good if we can kick off with an early winner and Dyna Keitaro should do the honours, he is boxed to charge home over the top of them. We can’t leave out the newcomer in Bear’s Gold, he has handy Victorian form and is sure to be well tried. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 2 - The Lauren Harris kennel has been firing lately and they have a handy one in Dorsal, he has been around the mark of late and gets his chance in this. Add in Blue Murray who is a very moderate beginner but he will be working home late. Box up 2.3.4.8.

Race 3 - The old fellow in Gun McBain is having his 153rd start tonight and is boxed for a forward showing, his recent short course form has been first class so he is a must for the trifecta punter. We can’t leave out Regal Looper who will be swooping late, he should get a clear run and be very hard to beat. Add in the pacey Harry Aztec out wide. Box Up 1.3.5.7.

Race 4 - Tricky event this one but it’s very hard to go past the inform Bogie Miracle in box 4, he was a big winner at Gawler last start in slick time and has a good turn of early pace so we will put him on top. The danger looks to be Alpha Alexander who ran a very good 2nd here last start in good time. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

Race 5 and this is the 1st of the 600m heats and a very good one at that, Cameron Butcher has Purpose Driven flying at the moment and she won by over 7L here last start in a quick 34.84 on that effort she is our pick. The danger will come from another inform runner in Inequity, he looks primed for this on his recent wins and is sure to be in the finish. Box Up 3.4.5.8.

Race 6 - The 2nd of the 600m heats and there is a lot of pace out wide in Eduardo and Sutton Steele, both are very smart when on the lure. Springvale Bryne has been freshened and is capable of running a cheeky race at odds. Box Up 2.3.4.7.

Race 7  - He is in outstanding form and that is On Fire, he has strung together 5 wins in a row at this venue in recent weeks and is drawn to win again. Striker Klinsman has been very disappointing of late but expect a forward showing from his rails draws tonight, add in Signal Peak for the trifecta. Box Up 1.2.3.5.

Race 8 - This is the final of the Howard Ashton and as mentioned earlier this race carries a more than handy $25.000 to the winner. The Ben Rawlings runners both look well placed and their recent form has been 1st class. Crunchin Numbers has the early pace so we will put him on top, Usain’s Squeeze has been racing well from inside draws but is drawn of the track in this one. At big value is Slippers Wish and he can add a bit of value to the pick 4. Box Up 1.4.5.8.

Race 9 - Whackin Theo flew home late last week when 3rd after finding early trouble and I would expect him to prove very hard to beat from box 1 tonight for Nicole Newlyn. Funky Monkey is returning from a spell and she loves to run a place as does Aston Hinkley. Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 10 - Lisa Rasmussen trained Tommy’s Tune will find this event more to his liking than his recent starts, he has drawn perfectly down in box 1 and will prove very hard to beat. Mauricio continues to taunt me as he looked the winner here last week and was run down right on the line so we can’t leave him out in this. Box up 1.4.5.7.

Race 11 - This looks wide open so it makes for a good 1st four bet, Forlano was a very good winner here 2 runs back winning in a handy 30.09, he has a good turn of early pace and looks one of the major players. Dawning Hope has been hit and miss of late and found a heap of trouble here last start but can improve from the wide draw, add Canya Sassy who loves to fill a place. Box up 3.6.7.8.

Race 12 - I like the inside 3 in this but they can all be tardy away on their night. Yoe won well from this draw 2 runs back and is very strong in the run home, Alpha Castor and Springvale Cooke will make their presence felt along with the pacey Long Gully Pete. Box Up 1.2.3.5

GAWLER BREEDERS 2017 MOVED TO JULY 16 AND 23

After the Howard Ashton Final the final race in the Breeders 2017 pay up series is the Gawler Breeders 2017 in June.

However due to the cross over with the Auction Final GRSA has decided to move this series back into July to avoid a clash. The series was to be run on Sunday 11th and 18th June however this will now be conducted on Sunday 16th and 23rd July. This avoids the Auction and Gawler Produce series.

SHANE MCQUEEN HEATS

The Shane McQueen heats will also been run tonight and it is great to see two fabulous  heats with some of the best middle distance greyhounds in the State doing battle over the 600m.

The first heat features Purpose Driven doing battle with Inequity, Disaaci, Zipping Zeus and Zipping Gator while the second heat see’s Springvale Bryne, Eduardo, Allen Oregon and Pure Presence the main chances.
It looks a fantastic series on paper with the first four from each heat qualifying for next week’s final which carries total prizemoney of $8,565.

The box draw for next week‘s final will be conducted oncourse after the running of Race 7 tonight.

GUN MCBAIN SHOOTING FOR NATIONAL RECORD

Iron dog Gun McBain will be shooting to equal a national record if he can win tonight’s Masters Event at Angle Park.

TIME GRADING UPDATE

GRSA has been working at achieving some of the outcomes from the recent Grading Review Panel meeting held on 28th April 2017.

Some items like cascading reserves need to be implemented by Ozchase however some do not.

We will be able to include greyhounds with 0 – 2 starts so every greyhound nominated will be eligible for consideration. The table below details the rating for 0-2 start greyhounds -

“A greyhound with 0 starts will be given a rating of 10 as a starting point. At its second start it will have the average of 10 and its first start. At its third start, it will be the average of the 2 lowest ratings, including the base rating of 10. ie if had 12, 12 from 2 starts, it will be 10 + 12 / 2 = 11”
For “Best to Worst” Time Grading (next meeting Monday 19th June) we will be able to include higher graded greyhounds into mixed events if there are insufficient nominations for a single race. The conditions of this are listed below -

“A Grade 4 can be mixed with a Grade 5 however a Grade 3 will not unless there is also a Grade 4 greyhound selected for that time graded race”

GOTBA NEWS

After consultation with the GOTBA some of their races have reverted back to 8 dog events rather than all 4 dog events as was conducted for their first two meetings.

With the Club receiving strong nominations the below criteria has been agreed for their meetings –
Juvenile, Juvenile/Maidens and Maidens (that have not won on the circle will all be graded as 4 dog events). This will protect the more inexperienced greyhounds.
Maidens (that have won 1 or more races on the circle), Novice, 1 stake, open etc will be graded as 8 dog events

This is all still dependent upon nominations received. The club will run 16 dog events for the Waterloo Cup, Oaks and Derby as per normal, depending upon nominations.

The GOTBA’s next meeting will be on Sunday 11th June.

BOOKING ON LINE FOR SATURDAY MORNING TRIALS AT ANGLE PARK

GRSA will monitor the bookings and attendance and may vary conditions and timeslots as required.

After the most recent ICG meeting GRSA will implement online bookings for trials at Gawler on Wednesday nights. This should happen in the next few weeks. Full details will be provided once the setup is completed.
