TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

As Easter fast approaches tonight we have a top class field assembled over the 600m for the 2018 Easter Cup heat which is race 8 on the programme, it certainly is wide open as there appears to be at least 5 main chances. Other are the Distance event which is race 6 and as usual all races are Trifecta and First Four events so that’s where we can pick up some cash for the Easter Long weekend.

Race 1 - This is a good betting race to kick the night off with as there are several chances. Born Billy should improve from the inside draw and will be at each way odds. Hopes Beau is the inform runner and only needs an ounce of luck in the run to the 1st turn to be hard to beat, add the well-drawn Optic Blast who will be running on strongly. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 2 - We will go with the newcomer here in Dyna Quire from the Rasmussen kennel, he hasn’t raced since finishing 3rd at the Meadows back in February, he is sure to improve and should be right in the mix on his SA debut. Grand Chaos is a moderate beginner and will be doing his best work late along with Usain Beast. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 3 - Matty Payne has a handy one with Dunkirk down in box 1, when on the lure he can carve out very quick times. Spring Irish has his paw on the till with 4 placings here in recent runs, but he needs to improve his box manners. Click Here is always around the mark and we can’t leave out Aston Amo as she loves a wide draw and has early pace, she is my roughie of the night and she has to be in our First Four. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 4 - This is a very strong 515 event and it’s very hard to go past last start winner Honcho Monelli who won the St Patrick Day Sprint in sensational fashion running a BON and personal best 29.42 from this draw. Kennel mate Greysynd Ebony can improve along with Pyredos Monelli who will be running on strongly. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 5 - Larrikin Locky was caught wide from his draw of 7 here last week and flashed home to run an eye catching 3rd behind Rachel Zane in 30.18, he is a must for our trifecta. Tullabung Betty has pace and is a chance of pinching this on her last start 29.93 run here from box 5 last start so we will put her on top. Box Up 1.3.5.8.

Race 6 - This is the 731m of the night and we will go with Springvale Cookie who was very unlucky here last start when checked early in the run and still finished 3rd behind On Fire in 43.19, she can kick up early and run a bold race. Purpose Driven flew home late over the sprint here last week to finish 2nd and she hasn’t missed a cheque in her 12 runs over this trip. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 7 - The Rasmussen team should have a good night and Becky Bale is well down in grade in this and from her rails draw looks very hard to beat. Notorious Mac is a newcomer from the Apple Isle and has 3 wins and 7 placings from just 11 career starts and is in the powerful Ben Rawlings kennel. Box Up 1.4.5.8.

Race 8 - As mentioned earlier this is a TOP CLASS 600m event and we will go with Ashom Monelli in box 4, he hasn’t been beaten at his 3 starts over this trip and went an outstanding 34.88 winning by a massive 10 Lengths here last week from box 8. The big danger is On Fire who has been in fine form over the 700m and has a perfect record over this trip. Add in Zipping Zeus and Zudactyl Monelli for our First Four. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 9 - Fantastic Chief will start a very short price favourite in this on his win in 30.14 from box 1, he will only be improved by the run and the former Western Australian has good box manners. Mossy Oak has good short course form and should be in this for a long way Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 10 - The Petar Jovanovic kennel only has the 1 runner in tonight and that is Cairnlea Buster, she has won 3 from 3 all from box 1, she steps out to box 2 tonight and should lead and win and send us home on a winning note. Irka Jakit is a chance along with Emerley Mine of filling the places. Box Up 2.4.6.7.

VALE – ROBERT KENNEDY

GRSA was saddened to hear the news that former Director and long-serving Chairman of GRSA, Robert Kennedy, passed away earlier in the week due to illness.

Robert made a conspicuous contribution to the industry and led the Board through what was a very challenging time for the racing industry generally. As a sign of respect all trainers tonight will wear black armbands in remembrance of Bob.

Race 8 tonight will be a Heat of the 2018 Easter Cup, with only one heat being conducted all greyhounds will progress through to next weeks $7,000 Final on Thursday, 29th March.

It’s an outstanding line up which promises to be a great race tonight and hopefully an even better one next week.

2. Emily As - Captain Abbott
3. Tyla Grace - Elizabeth Chegia

CAIRNLEA STRIDER AND CAIRNLEA JET IN LAUNCHING PAD SEMI FINALS TONIGHT

The Petar Jovanovic kennel will be well represented in the Semi Finals of the Launching Pad to be conducted at Sandown tonight.

After they both put up excellent performances without much luck last week in the heats where they both ran fourth they will be hoping for a touch more luck tonight in the semifinals. With 4 semifinals they will need to run in the first two to qualify for next week’s lucrative final. Cairnlea Jet has drawn box 7 in race 5 at 7.55pm (SA time) and will be up against it however the wide draw should not be a major concern. Cairnlea Strider is in race 6 at 8.19pm (SA time) and has also drawn box 7 and as he tends to like the rails so he will need luck early. We wish them the best of luck tonight.

NO STRAIGHT TRACK TRIALS AT EMERLEY PARK TOMORROW

GRSA has been advised that roller repairs have not been completed at Emerley Park and therefore the straight track is not available for lure trials tomorrow.

Updated GAR Information

The period of consultation in relation to the new and amended GARs has now concluded.  Given the limited feedback from industry, GRSA  intends to continue with the introduction of all the new and amended GARs from 1 April 2018.

Participants are reminded to ensure they have accessed all available information in relation to the changes.  This is available via the GRSA website, racing offices or by contacting the Integrity Department.

CLAIMING RACE CONDITIONS AVAILABLE

Specific claiming race conditions have been released for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.
The next Claiming races scheduled are –
Angle Park on Monday, 9th April over 515m.
Angle Park on Wednesday, 18th April over 388m.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS NOW STARTING AT 6PM

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this started last Tuesday, 6th March.
It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers can book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. (Trainers cannot nominate into this timeslot)
Therefore there will be two blocks of trials from 6pm to 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhounds to trial, after this staff will then conduct the Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night, which always used to be the case, where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.

REMINDER OF WEIGHT RULE (R39 (2))

Ensuring participants are aware that Rule 39 (2) which deals with with a greyhound that has not competed for more than 28 days.

To make it clear, for example, if a greyhound last competed on the 1st March it can next compete on 30th March which is the 29th day following its last start, so long as no more than 2kg variance.

POLICY FOR GREYHOUNDS QUALIFYING FOR A FINAL AND ENGAGED IN ANOTHER EVENT

Only when a final is part of a Group or Listed series may a greyhound be able to be scratched from an engagement without penalty to allow them to compete in the final. Permission to scratch without penalty must be sought directly from Stewards and prior to official publicised scratching time.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework has commenced with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups. GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
