Angle Park Preview - Thursday January 6, 2014

06/02/2014
Racing News

Tonight we have another 10 event card and it looks an even spread across all races.  I have pin-pointed a couple of GOOD things so let’s hope they salute.

Race 1 and Fire Tyson has struggled here at his past couple but can bounce back from the rails draw.  He only needs to step to give this a big shake.  Bogie Magic will be a big improver along with Tercel, who will be running on late.  Box up 1.2.4.5.

The second event and Wichita McLaren has a ton of ability when on the bunny.  Has broken the 30 sec. barrier here in the past however, he has found a heap of trouble in his past couple at short odds.  Is a big chance of bouncing back.  Add in Hairy Bear and Power Merc.  Box up 1.2.3.8.

Race 3 and this is the 700m event.  It is a very open affair and I have gone with Dyna Daina from box 4.  She has early pace and has been in the money in 7 of 9 runs over this trip.  Ducktail Jiver and Umika Bale both have strong chances and will be very hard to beat.  Box up 2.3.4.7.

The inside two look the main chances in race 4.  They both have a good turn of early pace and it will be whoever holds their nerve to the 1st turn.  Box up 1.2.4.6.

Lotsa Fun Gunn has the form on the board and has drawn perfectly in box 1 in race 5.  He is coming off a 30.17 win here last start.  Wonder Whirl pinged and led them a merry dance when winning in 30.04 over Sneaky Spirit last start.  Add a heap of others to run the trifecta.  Box up 1.5.6.8.   Good Luck!!!

The inside 3 all have a chance in the 6th and the Johnstone kennel can bounce back with Encosta Kahn from box 2.  He is working towards a win and tonight should be the night.  Senni Tony will be right in this along with Fluer Bale.  Box up 1.2.3.6.

Race 7 and Proven Juddy has the form on the board at Gawler.  He gets his chance from box 2 tonight to lead and win.  The dangers are Dyna Erwin out in box 8 and Kennington Oval out of box 5.  Box up 1.2.5.8.

Race 8 and this is a terrific 600m event and it is hard to tip against Off My Trout who carved out a 35.15 win here last week from this draw.  Victa Scott has pace and ran a more than handy 35.24  last start and will give this a big shake.  Box up 1.2.4.5.

The 9th and I have tipped the inside 4 in order 1.2.3.4. They have all been around the mark if not winning and the outside brigade will need a lot of luck to cross.

Race 10 and Sir Scrappy has the form on the board and hasn’t missed a cheque in his last 4 runs here and at Strathalbyn.  Illium Bale won from this draw 3 starts back in 30.25 so let’s go home winning with 1.2.4.8

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

ERNIE BUNG ARROW OFF THE SCENE FOR 3 MONTHS

South Australia’s star chaser “Ernie Bung Arrow” will be off the racing scene for at least 3 months after pulling up lame after a trial at Ballarat on Saturday and requiring an operation.

Trainer Ken Gill advised that Ernie Bung Arrow had chipped a piece of bone in his front wrist and would be operated on this Friday at Adelaide Plains Vet Clinic. He advised that he would be off the race track for atleast 3 months while he recovers and was hopeful that his champion can return to the form that has seen him dominate the local features over the last 6 months. With him only turning two in November last year “Ernie” is still very young and hopefully has time on his side for a return to the race track.

Ernie Bung Arrow was trialling at Ballarat in preparation for a potential tilt at the Ballarat Derby if he was not invited to the rich Temlee at the Meadows on February 15 with those invitations released yesterday. Ken Gill made the call to the Meadows and withdrew “Ernie” from the nominations before they were finalised.

SA ST LEGER HEATS

Last night at Angle Park we saw the running of 5 Heats of the 2014 SA St Leger. The St Leger usually brings together a strong line-up and this is again the case for 2014, with a number of our up and coming stars competing against some our most outstanding chasers.

The first three from each heat plus the fastest fourth qualified for next week’s semi-finals to be run at Angle Park on Thursday 13th February.

There will be two Semi-Finals then the $6,875 SA St Leger Final will be run on Thursday 20th February.

Heat winners were –

Kalden Gambino – 29.70

Very Bitta – 29.98

Suntory Gold – 29.94

Wild Soul – 29.79

Regal Looper – 30.01

FEATURE GRADE 4/5 600M FINAL AT ANGLE PARK TONIGHT

The feature on tonight’s 10 event card at Angle Park is the final of the $4,265 Grade 5 Feature over the middle distance of 600m.

There were two tightly contested heats last week with only .09 separating the winners. The fastest qualifier was the Petar Jovanovic trained Off My Trout who won the first heat in a handy 35.15 after he led throughout from box 1 defeating Valarie Allen and Pedro’s First. He looks hard to beat again after drawing the red and looks the likely leader. In the second heat Victa Scott also led throughout for an impressive win for trainer Ron Schadow in a solid 35.24. He defeated Book Of Shadows and Kaylarikki and again looks a top chance after drawing box 4 in the final. Good luck to all connections tonight.

The next Low Grade Feature will be for Grade 5 greyhounds over the 515m to be run on Thursday 20th February with heats followed by the $4,265 final on Thursday 27th February.

Nominations for this series close at 9am on Monday 17th February

MAIN POINTS FROM GRADING REVIEW PANEL

The main points that will affect participants from the recommendation and implementation from the Grading Review Panel are –

GRP Members

Membership of the GRP would benefit from periodical rotation to encourage fresh perspectives on the SA grading system. Both Gavin Harris who already sits on the ICG and John Vivian advised that they would be willing to come off the panel if there were other candidates available. We have already received an application to join the GRP to meet at the end of this year. To be determined by CEO and Racing Manager.

Comments on Nominations Marked “Only”

The panel resolved that “Only” should be disregarded over all distances and the grading left to the Grader.  With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler later this month the panel believed this should be introduced for a trial period. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st February 2014.

The Grader appreciates trainers putting comments on their nomination and generally tries to assist where possible.

Transition to Separate Grading at Gawler

Separate Grading will now commence at Gawler in February. Tuesday (Provincial 1) will be different to both Friday and Sunday (Provincial 2) for grading. Greyhounds will keep their current grade when Gawler is separated for both tracks. GRSA will program more Grade 6 heats and finals from January onwards at Gawler to assist with maximising Grade 6 returns.

With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler the Grade 6 rules will change. The changes will allow for two more wins at Gawler for SA Bred greyhounds (two tracks) and 1 more win for Non SA Bred greyhounds making it a maximum of 4. With the separation there will be really no more opportunity to“beat the grader”.

Grade 6 rules will change to -

GRADE 6

For greyhounds that have not won a Grade 5 or above at the track at the time of nomination.

However a greyhound will be ineligible for Grade 6 events if it has won an APM or APK Grade 5 or above event over 515m. (5NP races in SA are exempt)

Non-SA Bred Greyhounds:

Non-SA Bred Greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a 'Beat The Grader' win) at up to four different tracks in South Australia. This is a maximum of four (4) Grade 6 wins (5 with a 'Beat the Grader' win/s) in total." At least two (2) of the wins must be away from Angle Park.

Once a greyhound wins its fourth Grade 6 (5 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win/s), at any tracks where it is still eligible for Grade 6 grade, it will revert to a Grade 5.

SA Bred Greyhound

For City (APK & APM) tracks, SA Bred greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) at each track. At Provincial Tracks (APD, Gawler Provincial 1, Gawler Provincial 2, Strathalbyn & Mount Gambier) SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over 2 different distances at that track. At Country Tracks, SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over each distance at that track.

For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park APK, APM and APD and Gawler Provincial 1 and Gawler Provincial 2 are considered as “different tracks”.

Only to be introduced for meetings programmed when separation occurs.

Strathalbyn 319m

The 319m at Strathalbyn will be included on the Order of Preference at the same level as the 388m for Angle Park. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Mt Gambier Corresponding Meeting

Mt Gambier corresponding meetings will be considered on a weekly basis, Friday-Sunday-Friday etc. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Heats Programmed

When Heats are programmed the Grader will form the view that all eligible greyhounds will be included into the heats, unless the nomination clearly states otherwise ie No Heats. The only exception would be for Cup series where the trainers would need to nominate. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Grade 6 winning Grade 5/Open Event

A Grade 6 greyhound will only take one grade from Grade 6 to Grade 5 for winning a Grade 5 or Open Event  however if it was an Open Group series then the greyhound will be graded as a Grade 4. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Re-Grading of High Grade Greyhounds

It was agreed that 388m at Angle Park and 400m at Gawler to be considered for re-grading in line with the approach to distance races at these tracks. ie re-grading will only occur for short course events at these tracks for Grade 3 or higher greyhounds. At Angle Park over 388m a trainer can apply for a re-grade after two unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. At Gawler over 400m a trainer can apply for a re-grade after four unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. Having met this criteria, the onus is on the trainer to apply for a re-grade prior to the close of nominations. Only one distance will be considered for a downgrade per meeting. For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park APK, APM and APD will be considered as “different tracks” along with Gawler Tuesday and Gawler Friday/Sunday. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Veterans Races

Subsequent to the last meeting the GRP were concerned with the lack of Veterans races being conducted and recommended a slight change to the conditions of the race to allow a greater opportunity for these older greyhounds. It was agreed to -

  •  the age restriction open to 3 ½ years and advise that 4yo and older greyhounds will be given preference and then the race will then be made up of the next oldest greyhounds nominated in order of age (oldest first. If they are identical age they are separated on form). Trainers must still nominate for the race.

To be introduced from 1st February 2014.

TREATMENT BOOKS

With the new rules regarding Treatment Books being introduced from the 1st January it is recommended that all trainers keep a documented history of all treatments for each of their greyhounds as per the new rules. GRSA has been in the process of assisting trainers with specific treatment books however they are still being finalised and should be available early in the new year.
