Tonight’s 11 event programme has several interstate visitors once again all having a look at the Angle Park circuit for the feature races coming up next month, as usual all races are Trifecta and First Four events and let’s hope we can continue our winning form from recent weeks.
Race 1 - The interstate visitor Miss Bellawood which has handy credentials, she was a last start winner at Sandown in 29.71 from box 2 and placed there prior from box 8, she should go very close in this. Dashing Mickey is tardy early and will be doing her best work late. Box up 2.4.5.7
Race 2 - Two Up Thommo has been placed at 2 of his 5 runs, he fell last start at The Meadows late last month, he should find this more to his liking and is amongst the main chances. Boombox Charlie is a newcomer in the powerful Jovanovic kennel and the betting will be the best guide, add Left Exit who is drawn for a bold showing. Box up 1.2.6.8
Race 3 - Hot Spartan has been runner up at his 3 career runs, he has early pace and gets his chance to break through. Lornas Luck and Boombox Robbie appear to be the other main chances in a very open event. Box Up 1.2.4.6
Race 4 - There look to be several hopes here but I will stick with the well-drawn Come Home down on the fence, he has been missing the start big time in recent runs but should improve tonight. Black Antico is close to a win and can’t be left out of our trifecta, add Winning Broke who is capable of leading. Box up 1.2.4.7
Race 5 - This is the 600m of the night and Alpha Aion has a perfect record here with 2 from 2 and has the pace to cross and lead. Spring Taylor will be the one running on strongly and only needs luck early to give this a huge shake. Tammy Parker can fill a place. Box up 1.2.4.8
Race 6 - Zipping Jamie has a very impressive strike rate of 6 wins from just the 8 starts, she hasn’t had a huge amount of luck in her past couple but should go very close from a favourable draw at her 1st look at Angle Park. Emmy Gray is in career best form and with 4 wins on the trot she will be right in the finish. Box Up 1.2.5.8
Race 7 - Prancing Turbo has been placed at his past 2 at Geelong in recent runs, he carved out a more than handy 25.44 run at Warrnambool early last month and should be very hard to beat from the rails draw tonight. Diamond Heart is a pacey type and with luck can overcome her wide draw to run a cheeky race, add Acoustic Lee for value. Box up 1.2.3.8
Race 8 - This is the final of the Kings @ Queens with over $5,000 to the winner on offer. Road Travelled continues to impress and he carved out a slick 29.79 here last week leading throughout he should prove very hard to beat again. Crowdza Jumpin’ has early pace and looks the likely leader, the Jan Jones kennel is on fire and a win wouldn’t surprise. Canya Chase is very strong and will be thundering home late. Box up 1.3.4.7
Race 9 - The Victorian kennel of Angela Langton has a handy one in Security Code, he has 3 wins and 5 placings from his 9 starts with wins at The Meadows, Sandown and Horsham, he will be the one to catch. Oops A Daisy is now in the powerful Rasmussen kennel and could surprise on debut. Box up 1.2.4.7
Race 10 - Aston Jedi has won his past 2 here in 29.88 and over the 455m at Murray Bridge, he has a good turn of foot and is drawn to win. Tony’s Spark has been racing well and has only missed a place once in his 7 runs he is a must for the Trifecta. Box Up 2.5.7.8
Race 11 - Its always good to go home on a winner and we can do that with the ex-W.A performer Tornado Alley, he has 9 wins from 48 along with 16 placings and should appreciate this company. Exciting Times will be running on as will Chaddy Whacker. Box up 1.2.4.7

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE FINAL TONIGHT
GRSA introduced the Kings and Queens Feature series in support of those greyhounds affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics from 30 months back down to 27 months a few years back making them ineligible for the SA Oaks and SA Derby.
Tonight’s $7,500 final has drawn together an outstanding line up after two Kings heats and one Queens heat were conducted last week.
Heat winners were Canya Chase for Tony Rasmussen which ran 29.94 and Road Travelled for Steven Brooks which ran 29.79 in the Kings section. Crowdza Jumpin’ ran 30.01 in winning the Queens heat.
SOLO TRIALS TONIGHT IN A LEAD UP TO THE SA OAKS AND SA DERBY
With the Coffex Coffee SA Oaks next Thursday night Weblec Diamond for trainer Jeff Britton will trial for the series. She is a winner of 3 of her 5 starts.
With the BGC SA Derby also next Thursday night Mepunga Pegasus for trainer Jeff Britton will trial for the series. He is a winner of 4 of his 10 starts. Also Mister Harlewood for Jeff will also trial, he is a winner of 5 of his 16 starts with 7 placings.
Curt Lee will also trial for the Derby series for trainer Glen Rounds. He is a winner of 14 of his 22 starts. All greyhounds will trial in between races tonight.
SA OAKS AND SA DERBY HEATS – NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MONDAY
The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2017 (27 months) which has stayed the same as the last few years.
GRSA will continue to leave the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds, however, it is important that these series’ be supported by our local participants. If the series’ are not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to consider altering the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2020. In support of these series’ GRSA has kept the Heats of the Oaks on the same night as the Derby with Heats on Thursday, 12th September and the Group 3 Finals on Thursday, 19th September.

TRACK MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Participants should be aware of the following important track maintenance updates:
ANGLE PARK (Tuesday 10th September)
On Tuesday next week the Angle Park surface will undergo a track grade to re-establish cambers, followed by a medium harrow. Times for trials on the following Wednesday (11/9) are expected to be slower than normal.
GAWLER (Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th September)
*** There will be no trials at Gawler on Thursday 12th September ***
On Wednesday and Thursday next week the Gawler surface will undergo a track grade to re-establish cambers, followed by a medium harrow. The infield immediately inside the rail will also graded to remove the build-up of sand under the rail. Times for race on the following Friday (13/9) are expected to be slightly slower than normal.
GRADING CHANGES FROM GRADING REVIEW PANEL START ON MONDAY
The main change from the GRP was that when a greyhound comes to SA from Interstate for its first start that if it has won 4 or less races it should be considered a Grade 6 even if it has won Grade 5 races (Metropolitan Grade 5 races (460m – 590m) in their state will affect Grade 6).
There will be no retrospective grading for greyhounds already in SA with a starting date 9th September. Updated part of the guidelines which includes the changes to Metropolitan distance ranges of tracks.
GRADING OF INTERSTATE GREYHOUNDS
Greyhounds owned or trained interstate will be graded on their current city grade on the track/or tracks from the state in which they are owned or trained.
PURCHASING OF INTERSTATE GREYHOUNDS
Greyhounds purchased from Interstate into 100% South Australia Ownership which are currently higher than a Grade 5 Interstate (over any distance) on a Metropolitan track will initially be graded into Grade 5 events, provided that the Transfer of Ownership together with the proof of purchase is lodged with GRSA prior to close of nominations. There will be no retrospective grading once the Transfer of Ownership has been approved.
GRADE 6 ELIGIBILITY
Non- SA Bred greyhounds from interstate that have won five or more races at any track are not eligible for Grade 6 Grade. However if a greyhound has won a Metropolitan Grade 5 or above between (460m – 590m) they are not eligible.
SA Bred greyhounds that have been trained interstate and are transferred back to an SA trainer, will revert to their eligible grade at each track in SA however if they have won a Grade 5 or above event at any Metropolitan meeting (460m – 590m) they will be ineligible for Grade 6 events.
G-SIX AND G-EIGHT FROM AUGUST
In August GRSA identified some potential for the format to be modified to combine the G-SIX and G-EIGHT (8 dog field) formats at selected meetings with a view to maximising the balance and flow of nominations across the weekly Sky schedule supported by Tabcorp.
GRSA is now working on a Hybrid approach. Under the new framework, the more traditional G-EIGHT format will operate across the four legs of the Quadrella (typically the best four races on the card) for selected meetings, with the remainder of the meeting being graded as G-SIX. This is for Angle Park, Gawler and Mt Gambier. Additionally, the heats and finals of all feature events or specifically identified races, as advised by the Racing Department, will run under the G-EIGHT (or ‘full field’) format and may or may not be used in the Quadrella.
In regard to tonight’s Angle Park meeting the Kings and Queens are programmed as races 2,3 and 4. These races could have been used in the Quaddie however some high grade 515m or 600m dogs or even stayers may have been made reserves or left out altogether. Last Monday night the Grading department made the Auction Final race 1 on Monday night with a full field of 8. The Grading department will continue to work within the parameters advised above with feature races used as they see fit in the G-EIGHT format.
NO SATISFACTORY TRIALS AT MOUNT GAMBIER WHILE NEW KENNEL HOUSE BEING BUILT
The Mt Gambier GRC have advised GRSA that there will be No satisfactory trials on race days at Mount Gambier during the kennel house renovation due to the added pressures over the next 6 weeks.
An option may be to be conducted a STAT on Tuesday however this would have to be considered on a case by case basis by the clubs availability.
AUTO SORTING FOR GRADING DELAYED FOR A WEEK
GRSA advises that they have been in the process of auto sorting the Order of Preference for Grading purposes.
For a long period this has been a manual process. This will reduce this part of the process by about 1 hour and will remove some of the discretion of the Grader because it will also incorporate all greyhounds, even those off the Order with a Weighted Points Score (WPS) table.
GRSA has made some changes to the Order of Preference which include -
- No 5 – Qualifying trials will be managed separately outside the automation
- Remove St Leger & Champion Puppy heats reference
- Remove 6 months criteria reference
- Remove Grader giving preference to performances over 400m
- Back to normal - No 9 (Placed 2 of last 3 in City) and No 10 (One win from last 3 in City)
- Any reference about Pathway or Time Graded is removed from this file
- Update Track Classifications based on new file for WPS (Weighted Points Score)
- For WPS (Fell is considered as 4th and FTF is next available placing)
The WPS will assist with the selection of those greyhounds not on the Order of Preference so all greyhounds will effectively be sorted into an order for selection.
GRSA has the support from the GRP that when using the automation that if the order of entry by Order of Preference, Race wins or WPS is discovered to be incorrect after fields have been drawn that GRSA will not redraw the race in question (so long as the greyhound is correctly graded). If this did occur then the affected greyhound will get first preference at its next nomination.
Implementation of this process is NOW scheduled for Monday 16th September again barring any unforeseen delays.
WEIGHTED POINT SCORE TABLE
All greyhounds will also have a WPS calculated based upon the WPS table.
There is no age criteria on the start dates when calculating the WPS. The WPS must be calculated on the greyhound’s last 5 Race starts. If the greyhound has not competed in 5 Races, the pro-rata WPS will be applied.
Pro-rata WPS
Greyhounds that have not yet competed in five (5) starts are allocated points on a pro-rata or an average over five (5) starts with a weighting of 80% applied to the "pro-rata" points.
To calculate the points of a greyhound that has not competed in five (5) starts:
- divide the greyhound’s total points by the amount of starts it has competed in
- multiply the new average by the difference between 5 and the number of actual starts and apply the 80% discount weighting
- add the result to the actual points earned from the greyhound’s starts.
Examples for working out the points of greyhounds using this method:
One Start = 36 points 36 / 1 = 36; 36 x 4 = 144 x 0.8 = 115; 115 + 36 = 151 points
Two Starts = 46 points 46 / 2 = 23; 23 x 3 = 69 x 0.8 = 55; 55 + 46 = 101 points
Four Starts = 84 points 84 / 4 = 21; 21 x 1 = 21 x 0.8 = 16; 16 + 84 = 100 points
‘ORIGIN-AL’ PATH TO ADELAIDE CUP PART OF EXCITING CROSS-STATE INITIATIVES
Victorian and South Australian-based trainers will have a new direct path to the Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final under exciting new cross-State initiatives being introduced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and Greyhound Racing South Australia (GRSA).
The industry-first initiatives include the winner of GRSA’s State of Origin series, to be held at Angle Park on 26th September, being guaranteed a berth in the $75,000 to-the-winner Adelaide Cup Final on 11th October. The State of Origin series is run along similar lines to Sandown’s Speed Star, with four Vic-trained greyhounds clashing with four locals under match race conditions.
The State of Origin series was introduced in 2018 and is sure to create even greater interest among Victorian trainers in its second year with the inclusion of the massive carrot of bypassing the Adelaide Cup Heats.
A guaranteed Adelaide Cup spot isn’t the only benefit awaiting the State of Origin winner. In addition to gaining direct entry into the Adelaide Cup Final, the State of Origin victor will also secure a position in the Group 3 Sandown Shootout, the four-sprinter feature to be run on 14th November.
Another innovation will see the winner of the Adelaide Cup receive automatic entry, should connections accept, into the invitation-only Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows, which will be run this year on 9th November. With positions in the Adelaide Cup and Shootout on offer, State of Origin places will be keenly sought after and the winner of Sandown’s Speed Star series, to be held on 15th September, will be rewarded with one of the four Victorian spots in the Origin series.
- Highest placed Victorian in the September Speed Star (15th September) at Sandown gains automatic entry (if they accept) into SA State Of Origin Race to represent Vic (26th September).
- Winner of the SA State of Origin Race (SA or VIC greyhound) gains automatic entry (if they accept) into the Group 2 Shootout at Sandown (14th November).
- Winner of the SA State of Origin (SA or VIC greyhound) (if they accept)will be guaranteed a spot into the Group 1 Adelaide Cup final (11th October) 2 weeks later (Bypasses the Heats).
- Winner of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup gains automatic entry (if they accept) into the Group 1 Topgun at the Meadows (9th November).
CONDITIONS OF THE STATE OF ORIGIN SERIES:
The State of Origin Match Race series between South Australia and Victoria will be held on Thursday, 26th September.
Nominations close at 9am on Monday, 23rd September with GRSA.
Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or Victoria is based around the Nationals conditions. Greyhounds would need to be trained in either State 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the date of the race (26th September).
The best four greyhounds nominated from SA will be selected by the GRSA grader to represent SA. Victoria will already have a qualifier (if nominated) from their highest placed Victorian trained greyhound in their Speedstar series at Sandown on Sunday, 15th September. The other three best greyhounds nominated from Vic will be selected by the GRSA grader to represent Vic.
With the linking of the State Of Origin with the Adelaide Cup if a greyhound has qualified for another series on Adelaide Cup Final night they may be considered ineligible for the State Of Origin.
The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds including liaising with GRV for the Victorian selections. The SA Graders decision will be final. Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night. Reserves will be declared with one from SA and one from Victoria depending on nominations to replace the States representative if scratched. For example the SA reserve will only replace an SA scratching.
The Grader will rate the four greyhounds from each State in order from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest rated greyhound. The head to head matches will be decided by the two 1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect 1 to 4 with the 1 rated greyhounds receiving the most amount of money. However, the overall winner will still be determined based around the times the greyhounds run so all greyhounds have that opportunity.
PRIZEMONEY:
Winners of match races – 1 v 1 – Winner $4,750, 2 v 2 – Winner $4,500, 3 v 3 – Winner $4,250, 4 v 4 – Winner $4,000.
Overall State of Origin winner (based on overall times) $7,500, second $2,500, third $1,000.
The winner of the SA State of Origin (SA or VIC greyhound) will be guaranteed a spot (if they accept) into the Group 1 Adelaide Cup final (11th October) 2 weeks later and will be required to by pass the Heats.

NEW TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP FORM TO INCLUDE PROOF OF PURCHASE
Participants are advised that as from 1st September 2019 a new Transfer of Ownership Form is to be completed if wanting to seek grading exemptions. The new Form has a Proof of Purchase section, this requires purchasers to lodge documentation confirming the purchase of the greyhound or if no documentation is available then it is a requirement for the Statutory Declaration to be completed. If a Transfer of Ownership Form is lodged without the completion of this section then NO grading exemptions will be applied to the greyhound. The form is available on our website and is also included in this edition of Kennel Capers.
TRIALLING AT MURRAY BRIDGE AT RACE MEETINGS
For trials at Race meetings when available (less than 12 races) at Murray Bridge when it is a One turn meeting we will only have the One turn trials available in between kennelling and the first race. Similar for the Straight track it will only be Straight track trials.
GREYHOUND RACING SOUTH AUSTRALIA - 2019 SA COUNTRY CUP
Below are details of how and where greyhounds can qualify for the $7,500 SA Country Cup Final, to be run at Angle Park over 515 metres on Adelaide Cup G-SIX Final night Friday 11th October 2019.
Conditions
- All South Australian Greyhound Racing Clubs outside of Angle Park will conduct heats, or nominate greyhounds from which the Greyhound Racing SA Grading Department will choose two representatives. These meetings are Gawler Provincial 2, Murray Bridge One Turn Provincial 1 or 2 and Mount Gambier Provincial 2. (Performances at Gawler Provincial 1 meetings are not eligible for consideration)
- The event is open to all South Australian greyhounds that are not above Grade 5 at Angle Park (APK City A & APM City B meetings only) over 515 metres at the time of nomination. Winner of each event takes a penalty including the final.
Special Exceptions:
Mount Gambier Club is allowed to include non-South Australian trainers under strict conditions:
- The trainer has had starters at 15 meetings for Mt Gambier in the previous 12 months.
- The trainer can only qualify for one of the clubs.
- The trainer must have trained the greyhound nominated for the previous 3 months.
- Graders’ discretion will be used to determine the best nominated.
- The greyhound must be SA trained (except Mount Gambier as above).
- A South Australian trained greyhound is defined as one that has been racing in SA for a period of not less than 3 out of the 6 months immediately prior to the time of nomination.
- The greyhound must have started at least 2 times in the last 12 months at the track it is attempting to represent.
- There will be a maximum of two heats per Club with the winners of each heat qualifying. If there is only one heat conducted then the first two placegetters will qualify. (up to 8 dog heats)
- The two reserves will be determined firstly by a ballot of the second placegetters from all heats. The third placegetters will then be considered by ballot if required. If a heat was not conducted at the track, then that track is not included in the ballot. Should a greyhound be withdrawn prior to the ballot, the next placed greyhound from that Club’s heat will be selected.
- Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another track in this series, unless there are insufficient nominations to fill the field.
