TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

As another month has flown by its time to back a few winners so we can start to pay the good old tax bill, the racing here tonight looks very good so we should be able to snare a couple of handy Trifectas and hopefully a First Four or two.

Race 1 - It’s a tough race to kick the night off with but we will go with the inside 3 and I’m leaning towards the pacey Bogie Bullet, she was a last start winner here in 30.04 and a repeat performance will be hard to beat. Snakebite Bale will be charging home late along with Hesa Jayclo. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 2 - Troy Murray has a first starter engaged in Love Made Me and the well-bred youngster is sure to be well tried on debut. The Rasmussen kennel has two runners with Dyna Quire having his 19th try to crack his Maiden tonight. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 3 - This is another wide-open affair and the Rasmussen kennel has two new starters from across the border in Shimando and Shima Breeze with the latter being my top pick. Max Shake will be right in the mix if he can be close enough early. Box Up 1.3.4.6.

Race 4 - Amity Marlow was an eye catching run from this draw last week, she should be on the pace early tonight and will be hard to beat. Cinnamon Rose will add value to our First Four as she will be running on along the fence, add Cain Hoy out wide who finished on well at Gawler last start. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 5 - This is a top-quality field and to add to it we see the return of Tuggerah from a short stint in Victoria where he won in a very smart 29.57 back in May at Sandown. Cairnlea Kenny resumed with a smart 29.80 win from box 2 and should only be improved by the run so we will put him on top, add Spring Bloom who is in top form. Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 6 - This is the 600m of the night and the two main chances look to be Max Jake who has won his last 2 In good fashion over this trip and Ashom Monelli who was beaten here last start when odds on favourite. Croydon Boys will be working home well and can pinch a place. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 7 - This is my roughie pick of the night, we will go with the pacey Prophetess out in box 7, she has won her past 2 in good fashion at Gawler and the wide draw won’t be a problem. Fox Gambler is knocking on the door with 2 placings in recent runs and has a good turn of early pace. Box Up 1.5.6.7.

Race 8 - I like the book ends in this in Spring Bridge and Nations, both are very smart on their night and are boxed for a bold showing. Bella Trix has won her past 3 here all in quick times and is a must for our First Four, add in Hot Marlow who can run a cheeky race. Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 9 - This is the Distance affair of the night and we see the return of Bogie Bekim over the journey, he had a long spell and has resumed with a run over the sprint and a 4th here last start over the 600m, he will start the punters elect but might need the run. Zudactyl Monelli has the pace to lead and is a big chance of pinching this. Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 10 - Well let’s hope we are in front by now as this is a toughie, the chances look to be Zoro Bale who is around the mark, Bombastic Tim who is a big chance on his night and Grand Chaos who is a chance of leading from his wide draw. Box up 4.5.7.8.

Race 11 - Lauren Harris has Lektra Viki flying at the moment with 3 wins from her last 4 starts and she should send us home on a winning note. Sir Puppo is definitely the main danger and is drawn for a bold showing. Add Half A Mill for value as he will be running on. Box Up 2.3.4.7.

The winner of the Produce final is also eligible for a $6,000 bonus if it can win the 2018 Gawler Gold Cup later this year. If the winner of the Gawler Produce is SA Bred, there is also a $1,000 SA Bred Bonus.

CINDERELLA’S CLEANING CHAMPION PUPPY HEATS – NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MONDAY

The Cinderella’s Commercial Cleaning Group Champion Puppy Series is for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st July 2016 and is conducted as Heats to a Final series.
The $4,820 Heats will be run on Thursday 12th July and the Final on Thursday 19th July. Prizemoney for the 2018 Final will be $10,710 thanks to the increases announced from 1st July.
*Nominations for the heats close on Monday, 9th July with GRSA at 9.00am.*

GAWLER BREEDERS 2018 THIS MONTH

After the Group 3 Howard Ashton Final in late May the final race in the Breeders 2018 pay up series is the Gawler Breeders 2018.

The series will be conducted on Sunday 15th and 22nd July.
*Nominations for the heats close on Tuesday, 10th July with GRSA at 9.00am.*

GAWLER LURE UPDATE

Over the past week, the GRSA Maintenance team has been required to undertake a major repair of the Gawler lure system.

On Friday last week, a contractor undertaking some lure testing inadvertently damaged the system after the failure of some equipment. As a result, the meetings scheduled at Gawler on both Sunday and Tuesday were transferred to Angle Park.

The team has worked feverishly over the early part of this week and have completed repair works to the damaged system and a full working test of the system was completed this afternoon. Further testing will occur tomorrow and the Gawler meeting on Sunday will continue as programmed.

It was a huge effort by the team to undertake these repairs, led by GRSA’s Head of Maintenance Terry Winder, who was ably assisted by Darren Pearce and Dale Gray.

PORT AUGUSTA NEXT MEETING – SATURDAY 21ST JULY

The next meeting at Port Augusta will be on Saturday 21st July featuring the Rex Park Memorial Trophy worth $850.

All races on the program will have added prizemoney so after the terrific success of their Cup meeting last weekend (Windmill Haze for Ken Gill was successful) no doubt there will be a big crowd on hand.
*Nominations close on Tuesday, 17th July with GRSA at 9.00am.*

2018 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN VICTORIA

The GCA National Championships are just around the corner. The National Finals this year will be held at Sandown in Victoria to be conducted on Friday, 24th August.
Both the National Sprint and National Distance Finals will carry prizemoney of $75,000 to the winner.
The State series’ for SA will be held at Angle Park on Thursday, 2nd August for the Heats with the State Finals on the 9th August.
In an effort to support this series ALL states will be conducting their Finals on the same night to be run within a 2 hour period. It makes for a great promotional concept.
• Nominations this year will close at the normal time with GRSA which will be at 9am on Monday, 30th July
A reminder to all trainers of the clause which requires a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the nomination closing date to be eligible to represent SA. If unsure of a greyhound’s status, please contact the GRSA grading staff.

OAKS AND DERBY ELIGIBILITY IN 2018

The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2016 (27 months) which has stayed the same as last year.

GRSA has left the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds however it is important that this series is supported by our local participants. If the series is not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to alter the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2019. To support these series’ GRSA has changed the heats of the Oaks to be run on the same night as the Derby with heats on Thursday 13th September and the Group 3 finals on Thursday 20th September.

MOUNT GAMBIER TRACK RECORD LAST SUNDAY

Last Sunday at Mount Gambier the previous track record of 29.45 set by Lektra Stomp in March was smashed by Rockoon trained by Tracie Price.

Rockoon who has been a recent addition to the Price kennel from Victoria ran a sizzling 29.28 in winning by 9 ½ lengths and bettering the previous mark by over 2 lengths. Rockoon is a Group 1 winner when he competed in Victoria and was having his second start at the South East venue. At his first run over the 600m he went within .02 of the track record so put the writing on the wall for last Sunday’s performance. In a bonus for Metropolitan fans Rockoon is engaged in a 600m event at Angle Park on Monday (race 9 no 7) so it will be interesting to see what sort of time he ran run.

PRIZEMONEY INCREASES FOR ANGLE PARK (CITY A) THURSDAY FROM JULY 1

As of July 1, Thursday Night Angle Park stakemoney across all grades has increased by 5%, reflecting the key role that the premier weekly meeting plays in attracting the highest quality outcomes from local breeding and interstate acquisitions.

This will also benefit some of our feature events that will increase on Thursday nights.

TRAINERS TO RECEIVE $20 FROM 1ST JULY TO REPLACE $15 UNPLACED

The existing $15 unplaced payment that currently applies to a majority of SA greyhound races will be replaced by a new $20 Trainer Raceday Subsidy (TRS) from 1st July with 100% of that payment being allocated directly to trainers.

For clarity, this payment will be made in addition to the $60 trainer rebate and will be allocated to unplaced greyhounds under circumstances wherein the $15 payment would have previously applied. Unplaced payments of more than $20 will remain the same.

ICG MEETING LATER THIS MONTH

The next Industry Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Friday 27th July with an Agenda to be sent out to the panel in the next few weeks.

GRADING REVIEW PANEL GRADING OUTCOMES

The minutes from the Grading Review Panel which met on Friday 25th May were released in kennel capers a few weeks ago. Below is a specific recommendations of items discussed set for implementation from 1st July –

• Time Grading Update - The panel agreed to introduce a policy that relates to the time rating. If a greyhound has a rating more than 50% less that the highest rated dog in the individual race then this greyhound would be left out. Maiden events are excluded from this policy. For example if in one race the highest rated dog is 13 and the lowest rated dog is 7 (stays in), 6.50 (stays in), 6.25 (not eligible). The Grader will manage this process. To be implemented for meetings from 1st July 2018.
• Pathway Prizemoney at Port Augusta – The panel confirmed the breakdown if Pathway Prizemoney at Pot Augusta. This is purely about the money breakdown and not about how greyhounds are selected. This is at the Clubs discretion if they choose to run selected races (grades) on their program with this money breakdown.
• Maiden’s, Grade 6’s & Grade 5’s over 500+m - The panel suggested mixing Maidens with Grade 6’s and Grade 6’s with Grade 5’s when there is not enough to run a full race of each grade over the 500m + distance. The panel determined if there is 6 Grade 6’s and 2 Grade 5’s then this could be mixed however if the Grade 6 was in the All Tracks Calendar then this should not be done and a 6 dog race conducted. Also would only be done if only making up one race and not a case of the left over dogs from one race being mixed with greyhounds that do not have sufficient nominations to run one race. The panel believed the Grader could manage this process in support of 500+ racing at his discretion effective from 1st July 2018.
• Grade 6 Conditions - It was agreed to remove the APM City B condition to allow greyhounds to win a Grade 5 at that venue like at Gawler or APD which will not affect their Grade 6 at other tracks. The panel determined that it was important for this to start from meetings graded from 1st July 2018 in support of current Monday night racing. There would be no retrospectivity from 1st July 2018.
They also agreed to change the conditions of Grade 6 regarding winning over the different distance for Non SA Bred greyhounds which falls into line with what SA bred greyhounds can do. The outcome being a Non SA Bred Greyhound can win a Grade 6 400m at Gawler Provincial 1 and then win a Grade 6 531m at Gawler Provincial 1. This will count as 2 of the greyhounds 4 wins. Bearing in mind for example any greyhound that wins a Grade 6 400m, then wins a Grade 5 400m at the venue and become a Grade 4 will not be eligible for Grade 6’s over the other distances which has been in place for a number of years.
The panel determined for this to start from meetings graded from 1st July 2018. There would be no retrospectivity from 1st July 2018.

I have listed the updated Grade 6 rules below -

GRADE 6
All Grade 6 greyhounds remain eligible to complete their future engagements.
For greyhounds that have not won a Grade 5 or above at the track at the time of nomination.
However a greyhound will be ineligible for Grade 6 events if it has won an APK Grade 5 or above event over 515m. (5NP races in SA are exempt).
Non-SA Bred Greyhounds:
For City (APK & APM) tracks, Non SA Bred greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) at each track.  Non-SA Bred Greyhounds are eligible to win two (2) Grade 6 (3 with a 'Beat The Grader' win) at all other tracks in South Australia over different distances. There will be no retrospective grading from 1st July 2018. Once a greyhound wins its fourth Grade 6 (5 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win/s), at any tracks where it is still eligible for Grade 6 grade, it will revert to a Grade 5.
SA Bred Greyhound
For City (APK & APM) tracks, SA Bred greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) at each track At Provincial Tracks (APD, Gawler, Strathalbyn & Mount Gambier) SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over 2 different distances at that track.  At Country Tracks, SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over each distance at that track. Once a greyhound wins at total of 12 races at any tracks where it is still eligible for Grade 6 grade, it will revert to a Grade 5.
For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park City A, City B and Provincial 2 are considered as “different tracks” the same as Gawler Provincial 1 and Gawler Provincial 2. Winning a Heat and Final are considered as one (1) Grade 6 win.
A reminder to trainers that if they do not want to be in a type of race that they make it clear on their nomination. For example “No Pathway” or “No Masters”. If in regard to a graded event like an Open or Mixed race just putting “Only” on your nomination is not accepted (approved by the GRP previously), if trainers do not want their greyhounds in this event they must put “No Mixed or leave me out” for example.

CLAIMING RACES BEING CONDUCTED

There are specific claiming race conditions for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race. These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing. Conditions refer to no more than $2,500 or $5,000 claiming prize.
Races are programmed on –
Wednesday 11th July – 388m (up to $5,000) – nominations close 9am tomorrow
Sunday 15th July – 400m (Gawler – up to $5,000)

Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required, gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the Stewards on the day for access.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building. It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
