TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight at headquarters it appears another strong night of racing with a mixture of events over the sprint, the 600m and my favourite the 731m. The Petar Jovanovic kennel can continue on their winning note from last week’s huge night with several good things throughout the programme.

Race 1 - We kick off here with a short price favourite in Cairnlea Jet, he has won his past 4 here all in quick times and will take a power of beating once again. Jay’s Ace and the pacey Larrikin Locky can fill the placings. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 2 - There looks to be several chances in this and we will stick with the pacey Long Gully Helen out in Box 8, she should be able to cross early with moderate beginners on her inside. Zipping Kim can be hit and miss early but is more than capable with a clear run early. Add Serene Machine and Amity Marlow for value. Box Up 4.5.6.8.

Race 3 - The Rasmussen team rarely leave the track without a winner and they have a strong chance with Dyna Soren in this despite his poor draw of 4, so we will put him on top. Emerley Mine loves to run into the placings and is a must for our First Four. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 4 – Whilst only a small field this 600m event is full of class and we will go with another Jovanovic runner in Cairnlea Ollie down in box 1, he was a last start winner here over this trip in a handy 35.21 winning by over 10 Lengths. Zipping Hawk and High Eden Snow can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 5 - Now this is a wide-open affair so it makes for a perfect Trifecta and First Four event, the main chances look to be Emerley Nolen, Born Billy, Sally’s Girl and Allen Xander. All are very smart on their night and are capable of winning. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 6 - How good is this event over the 731m, litter mates in Purpose Driven and On Fire should nearly run the Quinella on recent racing, both are top class performers and have terrific records over this trip. Jeebus Bird is a newcomer from WA and is now in the powerful Rasmussen kennel, he has 7 wins and 15 placings from his 40 starts and is sure to be well tried on his Adelaide debut. Box Up 1.5.6.8.

Race 7 - This could be the third winner of the night for the Jovanovic kennel with Cairnlea Bella, she was in outstanding form with 4 wins on the trot in quick times late last year then resumed here last month and was well beaten over the short here and failed to beat a runner home, she has trialled well since and is our top pick from the rails draw. Click Here and the ultra-consistent Bellario for the minors. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 8 - Now we are going for four winners for the Jovanovic team with Cairnlea Strider, he made short work of a handy field here last week winning by over 8 Lengths in a sensational 29.52 from box 5 and should lead and win again on that effort. Becky Bale and Windmill Haze both will be running on late and can fill the placings. Box Up 3.4.6.8.

Race 9 - Crackerjack Jake has been racing over the 600m and the 731m of late with success and is well drawn down on the fence here tonight and should be right in the finish. Thermal Strike and Destini Laredo for the minors. Box Up 2.3.4.7.

Race 10 - This looks a toughie so let’s hope we are in front, the favourite looks to be Snakebite Bale who has been racing well of late. I am going with a last start winner here in Destini Mermaid who won here in 29.95 and is boxed for a bold showing again. Box Up 3.6.7.8.

Race 11 - We have been going home on a winner here in recent weeks and let’s hope Jolene Marlow can do the same for us from his draw of 6, he has been around the mark in recent starts without winning and appear a BIG chance in this. Fine Champan should start the punters elect but has been hit and miss on box rise; she is very smart with a clear run and can’t be overlooked. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

HONCHO MONELLI TRIALLING FOR SANDOWN SPEEDSTAR TONIGHT

One of SA’S best sprinters will be looking to qualify for the Group 3 Bill Collins Speedstar on Thursday 10th May when he time trials tonight at Sandown.

The Tony Rasmussen trained speedster will be trialling after race 4 on their program and needs to run around 29.30 for the 515m journey to make the top 8 final field. Depending on his time he could also qualify for other match races on the night however the Group 3 is his target. We can only hope the inclement local weather doesn’t get to Sandown before he hits the track.

The Rasmussen team will also have a couple of runners engaged on the night with Nangar Bear in race 8 No 8 (8.07pm SA time) and Bean Monelli in race 9 No 4 (8.28pm SA time).

LOW GRADE FEATURE HEATS

Tonight we were meant to run Heats of an SA Bred Grade 5 series sponsored by the AGRC however due  to a lack of nominations this series was not conducted.

GRSA and the AGRC are working to find a date in June to run this series at Angle Park with that date to be released shortly.

2016 GREYHOUND AUCTION RACE SERIES – 388m FINAL

In a lead up to the main series there were three heats run at Angle Park over the 388m yesterday with the first 2 from each heat and two fastest third placegetters qualifying for the final. The $3,000 final will be held next Wednesday the 9th May.

Heat winners were –
• Danyo’s Cally – 22.58
• Bushiri – 22.33
• Blessed In Black – 22.14
Nominator bonus payment for this final is $400, $200, $100.

The Main race series for greyhounds that were purchased through the 2016 Auction will be $4,590 heats run on Thursday, 7th June. The $19,000 final will be run on Thursday, 14th June 2018.
There will be another series to be run in July or August over 515m for $1,130 heats and then the final is worth $5,000. These dates are yet to be confirmed.

2018 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON

The major race for Breeders 2018 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run on Wednesday, 16th May.

These will be followed by the Semi- Finals on May 24th and the $37,500 final on May 31st. Total prizemoney for heats and semis will be determined by the number of races run.
The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2018. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the Preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.
* Nominations close on Friday, 11th May with GRSA at 9.00am.

MOUNT GAMBIER RETURNING TO RACING ON SUNDAY 13TH MAY

The upgrade of the Mt Gambier track is progressing nicely.

The project involves raising the cambers around the track to 10% on the turns and 4% on the straights. The positions of the starts and track access points are all impacted by the increase to the camber.
The club is currently having a break from racing for around two and a half weeks with the return to racing on schedule for Sunday 13th May.

MOUNT GAMBIER SET TO RUN ADDITIONAL FORTNIGHTLY THURSDAY MEETING

The Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club is set to run an additional fortnightly Thursday afternoon race meeting over the coming months.

The addition of these meetings follows consultation between the Club and GRSA on servicing local participants during the temporary closure of the Warrnambool Greyhound Club for refurbishments from May to August. With the pool of nominations for Mount Gambier coming from the South East region of SA and from across the border in country Victoria, it is believed that an extra meeting per fortnight will assist participation in the region. The change will result in Mount Gambier racing on a two week cycle of Friday/Sunday in the first week and then Thursday/Sunday in the second week.

GRSA have released three extra dates in the first instance in late May and June to establish support, with the intent to add additional meetings in July and August whilst the Warrnambool works take place (estimated at 4 months). GRSA thanks the support of the Mt Gambier GRC, Radio TAB, staff and Sky Racing for their support for these extra meetings.
Date changes are listed below –
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 24th May 2018  (TAB) Day
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 7th June 2018  (TAB) Day
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 21st June 2018  (TAB) Day

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Recently Kurt has been able to extend his roster to not only do Thursday nights meetings at Angle Park but also the Monday night and Wednesday day meetings however due to personal commitments he is unable to do Monday nights until later in the year.

Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the stewards on the day for access.

CLAIMING RACES BEING CONDUCTED

Specific claiming race conditions have been released for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.
Please check the most recent All Tracks calendar for the programming of these races will races listed on –
Wednesday 16th – 388m
Wednesday 30th May – 388m

MAIDENS ADDED TO ANGLE PARK THURSDAY NIGHTS

In response to the recent greyhound nominations on Thursday nights GRSA decided to add Maiden events to Thursday nights.

GRSA will continue to monitor greyhound nominations and make changes as required.
Additional Maidens -
10/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m
17/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m
24/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m
31/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m

ONE OFF HEATS CONDUCTED

When graded heats are programmed in the All Tracks calendar GRSA makes every effort to run as many heats as possible, however, on occasion there may only be sufficient nominations to run one heat.

GRSA supports those that nominated by running this as a heat to final, should there be ten greyhounds eligible, the reserves are then considered for the final even if they did not compete in the heat. This policy has been determined by the Grading Review Panel previously, they also determined that if there were less than eight runners then this one off heat should not be programmed. This policy was brought about due to the Grade 5 heats on Wednesday to a Monday night final being knocked about by scratching’s and injuries, where a few years ago when less than eight runners were in a heat it resulted in the final being a three dog race. If a heat is not run, then a normal graded race would then be considered. This has been put into practice for subsequent series’.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.

TRIAL FEES AT RACE MEETINGS FROM 1ST APRIL

With GRSA allowing for trials under certain conditions at race meetings, on occasions payment of these trials may have been overlooked.

From the 1st April any trainer trialling a greyhound at the race meeting will be required to pay staff as they would at a normal trial session. This will be consistent with all our racing and trialling meetings.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS NOW STARTING AT 6PM

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this started on Tuesday, 6th March.
It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers can book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. (Trainers cannot nominate into this timeslot)
Therefore, there will be two blocks of trials from 6pm to 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhounds to trial, after this staff will then conduct the Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night, which always used to be the case, where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises  from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA , litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
