TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

After a very exciting month of racing here at headquarters we come to the end of another month and we need to keep backing winners to build the bank for next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. We have a 12-event programme and there looks to be several good things throughout the night, as always, we will have a lash at the Trifectas and First Fours.

Race 1 - Tony’s Spark can bounce back after finding a heap of trouble here last start, he has the pace to lead and should go very close. Cutie Lee and Victa Louise along with Velocity Dory for our First Four. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 2 - This is the 1st of two Maidens tonight and we will go with Shadow Burner down in box 2, he is in the Rasmussen kennel and is sure to be in the mix on his debut. Fantastic Flame and Jabba Bolt can fill the placings. Box Up 2.4,7,8,

Race 3 - Right Exit led here last start only to be run down late by Worth a Shout, she has the paw on the till and can break through in this. Wooden Tiger has trialled well and looks the main danger. Spring Vinnie is well drawn and can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 4 - Little Earner is in outstanding form winning 5 from 5, she has terrific early pace and should win again. What A Wish was a handy winner last start at Gawler and is drawn to run a very cheeky race and will be right in the finish, add Springvale Issy who will be doing her best work late. Box Up 1.4.5.8

Race 5 - This is a wide open affair but we will go with Power Burner out in box 6, he has won his past 3 here all in good fashion and should be able to ping and lead once again. The dangers look to be the well-drawn Long Gully Evie and No Knowledge both are more than handy. Box up 1.3.4.6

Race 6 - The Cameron Butcher kennel has another quality sprinter in Coorong Lucy, she has won her last 4 here and Murry Bridge all in good fashion, she is drawn for a bold showing once again. Springvale Anna stormed home win last start in 30.23 from box 2, she is the value for our Trifecta along with Flying Dutchy. Box Up 1.3.6.7.

Race 7 - The Rasmussen kennel should have a big night and they have another strong chance with last start winner Worth A Shout in this, he won on his SA debut in 30.07 from a wide draw and should only be improved by the run he should be at each way odds. Conner Peruzzi has terrific short course form looks the danger. Box up 2.6.7.8.

Race 8 - This particular event looks a ripper on paper as there is a heap of chances, I still like the well-drawn Fantastic Yankee who has been on fire of late with 2 good wins over the 455m at Murray Bridge, he is very strong and is drawn for a bold showing. Superstar Chase has been very good to us in recent weeks and has won 3 from his last 4 here, he continues to improve and is amongst the main chances, add the pacey Times Right for our First Four. Box Up 1.2.7.8.

Race 9 - This is the 600m of the night and its very hard to go past the Victorian chaser Razors Edge he is in superb form with placings at Sandown and Geelong in recent runs he has had a look here late last month when 2nd in quick time he is our top pick. Spring Kuda and Victa Boris for the minors. Box up 1.2.4.8.

Race 10 - Five Thirty returned to the winners circle here last week with a strong win over Holy Reign, she will be the one running on again and should prove too strong. Holy Reign and Max Jake can set the pace early and are chances again for the First Four, add Sir Truculent who found a heap of trouble last start and is very strong. Box Up 2.4.6.8.

Race 11 - The Troy Murray trained Waterloo Monelli gets his chance to bounce back tonight, he should be right on the pace early and take beating. Blastoise and Hesa Marlow both have early pace and can settle forward but would need to pinch an early break to salute. Box Up 1.2.4.7

Race 12 - I say it every week its always good to go home on a winner and we can do that with Emmy Gray, she has the pace to lead and is back in grade tonight, she should find this a little easier than her recent starts. Resolute Lee loves to run a place and is a must for the Trifecta along with Lenny The Jet. Box Up 2.5.7.8.

AUTO SORTING FOR GRADING STARTED TODAY

GRSA advises that the auto sorting of the Order of Preference for Grading purposes started today for the Angle Park Monday night meeting on November 4th

This process reduced this part of the process by about 2 hours and does remove some of the discretion of the Grader because it will also incorporate all greyhounds, even those off the Order with a Weighted Points Score (WPS) table.

GRSA made changes to the Order of Preference as previously advised which include -

  • No 5 – Qualifying trials will be managed separately outside the automation
  • Remove St Leger & Champion Puppy heats reference
  • Remove 6 months criteria reference
  • Remove Grader giving preference to performances over 400m
  • No 9 (Placed 2 of last 3 in City) and No 10 (One win from last 3 in City)
  • Any reference about Pathway or Time Graded is removed from this file
  • Update Track Classifications based on new file for WPS (Weighted Points Score)
  • For WPS (Fell is considered as 4th and FTF is next available placing)

The WPS will assist with the selection of those greyhounds not on the Order of Preference so all greyhounds will effectively be sorted into an order for selection.

GRSA has the support from the GRP that when using the automation that if the order of entry by Order of Preference, Race wins or WPS is discovered to be incorrect after fields have been drawn that GRSA will NOT redraw the race in question (so long as the greyhound is correctly graded). If this did occur then the affected greyhound will get first preference at its next nomination.

GRSA will publicise the Order of Preference and WPS document once grading of each meeting is completed to be posted on the GRSA website similar to the Time Grading report.

WEIGHTED POINT SCORE TABLE

All greyhounds will also have a WPS calculated based upon the WPS table. There is no age criteria on the start dates when calculating the WPS. The WPS must be calculated on the greyhound’s last 5 Race starts. If the greyhound has not competed in 5 Races, the pro-rata WPS will be applied.

Pro-rata WPS

Greyhounds that have not yet competed in five (5) starts are allocated points on a pro-rata or an average over five (5) starts with a weighting of 80% applied to the "pro-rata" points.

To calculate the points of a greyhound that has not competed in five (5) starts:

  1. divide the greyhound’s total points by the amount of starts it has competed in
  2. multiply the new average by the difference between 5 and the number of actual starts and apply the 80% discount weighting
  3. add the result to the actual points earned from the greyhound’s starts.

Examples for working out the points of greyhounds using this method:

One Start = 36 points 36 / 1 = 36; 36 x 4 = 144 x 0.8 = 115; 115 + 36 = 151 points

Two Starts = 46 points 46 / 2 = 23; 23 x 3 = 69 x 0.8 = 55; 55 + 46 = 101 points

Four Starts = 84 points 84 / 4 = 21; 21 x 1 = 21 x 0.8 = 16; 16 + 84 = 100 points

The full table of tracks and classifications is available on the GRSA website and published in the last editions of kennel capers.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT TO BE MOVED NEAR THE KENNEL HOUSE

GRSA have moved the Accell Therapy mat out of the reception area at Angle Park and moved it near the Kennel House.

This will hopefully encourage trainers to utilise the mat during and outside of normal Admin hours. The mat cannot be used on race days/nights however could be used on trial nights. GRSA will monitor the use of the mat to see if the move has assisted the use and trainers.

GRADING CHANGES FROM GRADING REVIEW PANEL HAVE STARTED

The main change from the GRP was that when a greyhound comes to SA and has won less than 5 races (1-4 wins) then it will be considered a Grade 6 even if it has won Grade 5 races (Metropolitan Grade 5 races (460m – 590m) in their State, however, will affect Grade 6).

There will be no retrospective grading for greyhounds already in SA with a starting date of the 9th September.

TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP FORM INCLUDES PROOF OF PURCHASE

Participants are advised that as from 1st September, 2019 a new Transfer of Ownership Form is to be completed if wanting to seek grading exemptions.

The new Form has a Proof of Purchase section, this requires purchasers to lodge documentation confirming the purchase of the greyhound or if no documentation is available then it is a requirement for the Statutory Declaration to be completed.  If a Transfer of Ownership Form is lodged without the completion of this section then NO grading exemptions will be applied to the greyhound.  The form is available on our website.

TRANSFERING GREYHOUNDS INTO SA WITH PROOF OF PURCHSE AND GRADING EXEMPTIONS

GRSA has considered the scenario of SA owners purchasing greyhounds with the new proof of purchase transfer and choosing not to bring them back to SA but still hoping to get grading exemptions if needed at the time.

We have already had a number of greyhounds purchased with this process. Normally GRSA has not had to deal with this scenario as the greyhounds would normally be transferred to a local trainer in SA and race straight away so there has never been a policy in place.

GRSA has introduced the below policy -

Any greyhounds purchased into SA ownership under the proof of purchase conditions to be trained in SA and seeking grading exemptions need to be in SA to receive grading exemptions before the 1st January 2020. On the 1st or after this date greyhounds have to come back to SA once purchased without any race starts interstate to receive a grading exemption.

Owners are encouraged to contact the GRSA grader to assist with specific grades of greyhounds prior to purchase.

WINNING GRADE 6 RACES IN ORDER

GRSA reminds trainers to win their grade 6 events in order at a specific venue. For the venues that allow two Grade 6 wins trainers need to win a Grade 6 over one distance and then a Grade 6 over the other distance. If a greyhound wins a Grade 6 and then a Grade 5 then they will lose their Grade 6 over the other distance at that venue.

MOUNT GAMBIER TIME GRADING TO BE A MIX OF WINS FROM OCTOBER

After a request from the Mt Gambier GRC to change the format of their Time Grading events, GRSA has approved the change for their Thursday meetings from specific grades to a mix of race wins. From their meeting on Thursday, 3rd October and all other Time Graded meetings races will be Maidens, 1-4 wins and 5+ wins which will change from Maiden, Grade 6 and Grade 5.

Races will still be Non Penalty, with normal Time Graded prizemoney.

For Middle Distance (600m) and Distance (732m) racing, the GRSA Grader (using discretion), may choose to construct a field over these distances without regard for the number of wins of the greyhounds nominated, if in the opinion of the Grader the spread of Time Ratings warrants the running of that race.

ICG MEETING ON NOVEMBER 8

The next Industry Consultative Group meeting will be held on Friday, 8th November 2019 with an agenda to be released shortly to the panel.

MOUNT GAMBIER CANCELLED ON BOXING DAY

GRSA advises that the meeting set down at Mount Gambier on Thursday 26th December 2019 has been cancelled. GRSA has been advised that there will not be a Vet available on this date for on track duties.

Details are below -
