TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The highlight tonight at headquarters is the running of the 2018 Brian Johnstone final, this race carries a $26,000 to the winner cheque and is race 8 on the programme, it certainly is a top quality field and good luck to all who have made the final. As usual all races are Trifecta and First Four events and in recent weeks we have been on the right side of the ledger and we should be able to do the same again tonight.

Race 1 - We can kick off the night with Flyrite down in box 1 at good odds, she won here last start in 30.03 leading throughout from box 5, she can do the same again with luck. Cairnlea Jet will start the punters elect and is very strong she is a must for our Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 2 - This is the Maiden event of the night and Closing Midnight has been placed at both his starts and looks a chance in a very open affair. Zia Giulia is another who has been placed in recent weeks and should be right in the finish. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 3 - This is a wide open affair so it makes for a terrific First Four bet, the main chances look to be Our Collision who is racing well over the short and is our value runner. Sway Bars is my top selection and is a pacey customer, add Lose Your Blues and Spring Taylor for our First Four. Box Up 4.5.6.8.

Race 4 - Weblec Nic will find this a lot easier than her past couple she has early pace and should be able to cross and lead. Velocity Flame is in form without winning and can figure in the placings once again along with Precious Miracle who has a perfect record of 3 from 3. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

Race 5 - This is the 600m of the night and Destini Rocket is my pick at each way odds, she won here 3 starts back in a very handy 35.15 defeating Nations and a repeat performance puts her on top. Mepunga Gal will be running on strongly but is hit and miss on box rise. Box Up 3.4.5.8.

Race 6 - Its very hard to go past the Lauren Harris trained Max Jake in this, he has won his past 2 here in good fashion over the 600m he drops back to the sprint here and should prove too strong. Zinnia Monelli will be doing her best work late along with Silver Timothy at handy odds. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 7 - Jeebus Bird has been racing very well over the 600m and 731m of late and drops back to the sprint tonight, he will be very hard to beat if he is close enough to them down the back. Up Time Girl resumed last week and finished 2nd behind Flyrite in 30.03, she should be the improver. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 8 - The Brian Johnstone final this is an absolute cracker, the 2 main chances for mine look to be Axel Footluce who charged late to win here last week in 29.63 from box 5, he is very smart and the draw will enhance his chances and Alicante Bouchet who is a pacey type who will be very hard to beat with an ounce of luck early and is a must for our Trifecta. Add Victa Ashley and Oakvale Magic for the minors. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 9 - With only the 5 runners its very hard to go past the Tony Rasmussen trained Nations down in box 1, he won in a sizzling 34.92 over the 600m last start from the same draw and should prove the measuring stick. Kennel mates Nangar Bear and the pacey Larrikin Locky can fill the placings. Box Up 1.2.4.8.

Race 10 - This is another wide open affair and we will go with Born Billy in this, he has been hit and miss at his last 2 runs here but is more than capable of improving in this. Jays Ace is very smart on his night and will be right in the mix. Box Up 2.3.4.6.

Race 11 - It’s always good to go home on a winner and we can do that with Play That Song out in box 8, he has been struggling in tougher company in recent runs and should find this more to his liking. Just Did It is very strong and will be making late ground with Winnipeg Jeck. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

MURRAY BRIDGE TRIALS STARTED TODAY

There were about 6 – 8 trainers and around 20 odd greyhounds that took their first steps on the new Murray Bridge track, trialling this morning.

There were also a number of interested onlooker’s on course to see how things would progress. Most greyhounds came out of the 395m boxes with others hand slipping on the Once Turn surface. By all reports everything went well with positive comments regarding the trials so our target of racing later next month is certainly one step closer.

2018 BRIAN JOHNSTONE FINAL TONIGHT

Last Thursday night at Angle Park there were two fantastic semi-finals of the Group 3 Brian Johnstone final where the first four placegetters from each semi-final qualified for tonight’s feature final.

The fastest qualifier for the final was Axel Footluce for Ken Trowbridge who ran a slick 29.63 in winning by 3 lengths. He defeated Oakvale Magic and Jazzy Footluce.

The other semi-final was won by the Ben Rawlings trained Alicante Bouchet in 29.69 who led throughout to defeat Victa Ashley and Jack Get Back.

The Final field in Box Draw order is:
1.  Victa Ashley  Mike Giniotis
2.  Axel Footluce  Ken Trowbridge
3.  Jack Get Back  Ken Trowbridge
4.  Alicante Bouchet   Ben Rawlings
5.  Jazzy Footluce   Ken Trowbridge
6.  Oakvale Warrior  Nathan Wilson
7.  Oakvale Magic  Nathan Wilson
8.  Time’s Right  Cameron Butcher
9.  Play That Song (1st Res)          SCR
10.Weblec Nic (2nd Res)        SCR

The Group 3 Brian Johnstone Final is for eligible SA Bred greyhounds whelped between July 2016 and December 2016. The $37,500 Final is race 8 tonight and is listed to jump at 9.07pm (SA time).
UBET is offering a First 4 Jackpot of $10,000 on the final with the pool expected to get to over $60,000.
The final part of this series will be the Gawler Classic 2018 to be run on 9th and 16th December 2018.

ALPHA AION SHOOTING AT GROUP 1 BRISBANE CUP HEATS TONIGHT

An added bonus for racing tonight is the heats of the Group 1 Brisbane Cup at Albion Park where local sprinter Alpha Aion for trainer Ben Rawlings will be taking on the big guns from the East Coast. There are five terrific heats with plenty of depth and class.

Alpha Aion has drawn box 6 in the third heat (race 6) and comes up against Miss Splendamiro and Orson Allen so he will have to be at his top to qualify but we wish connections all the best.

Other notables in the series are She’s Gifted, Jury, Hasten Slowly, Maurice Minor, Fast Times and Not Available so it will be super competitive to see who makes it through to the rich $75,000 to the winner Group 1 Final next week.

Patrons on-course at Angle Park will be able to watch all the action as well as compare tote and bookmaker odds. UBET will have fixed odds available on all races and provide a $24,531 Exacta Jackpot on Race 8.

LOCALS EYEING OF THE BALLARAT CUP HEATS ON SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday night SA will be strongly represented in the heats of the Group 2 Ballarat Cup with many kennels making the trip across the border.
The powerful Tony Rasmussen team has Shimando engaged in the first heat (race 2 No 7 @ 6.12pm), new kennel addition Shima Mart (race 6 no 4 @ 7.42pm) and star chaser Honcho Monelli (race 8 no 7 @ 8.21pm). Tony also has Dyna Layla over 390m in race 12. Lisa Rasmussen has Pirate’s Curse in a supporting race (race 4) over the 545m in Grade 5 company.
Both Tracie Price with Smart Knocka and Dennis Kerr with Mighty Barcia are in race 8 drawing 5 & 6 respectively with both having high speed and clash with Honcho Monelli.
Cameron Butcher has taken Abuzz across for the series and is in race 9 no 4 at 8.39pm (heat 7) and it will be interesting to see how he goes after he set a new first split track record on Monday night at Angle Park when he ran 4.23 to the winning post over the 515m on his way to victory.
Not to mention both SA Owned Spring Bridge and Aston Kimetto for Seona Thompson which look very tough to beat in the series.

ANGLE PARK TRIALS MOVED FROM SATURDAY 15th TO SUNDAY 16th DECEMBER

Greyhound Racing SA has moved the Saturday morning trials at Angle Park on 15th December to Sunday 16th December to accommodate staffing availability.

In support of trialing opportunities it was considered best to move the trial session to Sunday rather than cancel all together. Trialing will commence on Sunday at 7.00am like a normal Saturday with bookings taken as per normal.

FREE TRIALS AT ANGLE PARK UNTIL MURRAY BRIDGE RACING

GRSA advises with the transition from Strathalbyn to Murray Bridge to support participants from that region there will be FREE trials at ALL Angle Park trial sessions on Tuesdays & Saturdays until Murray Bridge is racing.

It is still important that participants that are trialling advise staff to ensure they are on-course for their allotted timeslot.  GRSA is also looking at other ways we can assist participants in that region during this time.
