TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight’s 12 event programme certainly looks a strong card, we are racing over all 3 distances again which makes for a terrific night on the punt. We have several interstate visitors who are spread throughout the evening so keep a watch on them, we finished on the right side of the ledger here last week and hopefully do the same again tonight. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - The Kirin Corby flying machine Fabwik can jump straight to the front and win, she has won 20 at this venue and looks very hard to beat again. Diamond Heart has won her past 2 at this venue and loves the inside draw, add Spring Cuervo for the Trifecta. Box Up 1.4.5.7

Race 2 - I like one in this at each way odds in Walk On Water, she has a good turn of early pace and with moderate beginners on her inside can take up the early lead and win. Crowdza Jumpin’ and the pacey Star Anise are the big dangers. Box Up 4.6.7.8

Race 3 - The Steve Brook trained Road Travelled has won his last 6, he has a personal best here of 29.64 and broke the 395 metre track record at Murray Bridge at his latest start, he can win again. There’s A Catch has handy Victorian form with wins at The Meadows and Sandown and must be respected on his SA debut. Box up 3.6.7.8

Race 4 - This is a wide open affair with a lot of early pace, we will stick with last start winner Cawbourne Hunter down in box 3, he is very smart when on the lure and will go close again. Canya Chase is hit and miss early and will be doing his best work late, add Better Dream and Through The Dark for the First Four. Box Up 3.4.5.8

Race 5 - In recent weeks the 600m racing has been 1st class and this is no different with a heap of chances. Matty Mateusz is my top pick as I’m hoping he can take up the early lead and he is very strong. Whata Key can be hit and miss on box rise but if he steps can carve out a slick time. Spring Taylor and Whoomph will be the ones running on late. Box Up 2.3.4.7

Race 6 - Swift Timing can improve on her last start 3rd here, she got back further than expected but should be able to possie up closer in this. Winning Broke can add some value to our trifecta, he has been placed at both his runs since transferring to SA and is well drawn. Emmy Gray is the form runner with 4 wins from her last 5. Box up 1.2.4.5

Race 7 - The interstate visitor Weblec King looks a very strong chance in this, he has won his last 3 all in good times and if he handles the track 1st up will take a power of beating. Fantastic Bronx is a strong type and is the main danger from his draw. Box Up 2.3.6.7

Race 8 - This is the distance affair of the night and its hard to go past the well performed Dyna Quota, she has won 4 of her past 5 and will be right in the mix again. Miss Breakout has solid form over the 600m and is stepping up to the extra journey tonight, she should lead here and is a chance of pinching this if there is trouble. Tammy Parker can add value to first four as she should be running on late. Box up 1.3.5.8

Race 9 - The Mathew Lanigan kennel has crossed the border with a couple of smart sprinters and they should go close with Weblec Eagle from box 4, he can be hit and miss on box rise and looks a big chance here. Mod Squad is another from across the border who won last start in town. Box up 2.4.5.7

Race 10 - Waterloo Monelli can improve on his last start 4th, he is well drawn tonight and is normally very strong. Alpha Aion and Crash Bandicoot should start amongst the punters elects and both have early pace and will be right in the finish. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 11 - Philadelphia Pip has good Victorian form including her last start win at Sandown in 29.76, the Jason Sharp youngster can go very close from the draw. Tony’s Spark was a last start winner in 29.98 and is right in this once again, add Oakvale Thrill who will be rattling home late. Box up 1.2.4.5

Race 12 - Oakvale Beauty can send us home on a winning note after a big night of racing, she won here 3 runs back in quick time from this draw and can do the same again. Box up 1.4.5.8

HEATS KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE TONIGHT

Tonight GRSA will conduct the Kings and Queens Feature series with two Kings Heats and one Queens Heat tonight with the final of $7,500 next week on Thursday, 5th September; this series is conducted in continued support of any greyhound affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics change a few years ago.

The series has drawn together some exciting chasers with the likes of Star Anise, Walk On Water and Crowdza Jumpin’ doing battle in the Queens and Road Travelled and There’s A Catch in heat 1 of the Kings and Canya Chase and Better Dream in heat 2 of the Kings.

GRSA thanks the support of the trainers allowing for one heat of the Queens and two heats of the Kings. The Special conditions relate to when uneven heats are conducted with the intent about the series to have an even final. With one heat of the Queens the first 4 greyhounds will qualify for the final. With two heats of the Kings the first 2 from each heat will qualify for the final allowing for 4 dogs and 4 bitches to do battle next week.
The reserves will come from the Kings heats with the third placegetters declared reserves for the final. The box draw will be conducted on track after the running of Race 5 tonight.

SOLO TRIALS TONIGHT IN A LEAD UP TO THE SA OAKS

With the Coffex Coffee SA Oaks only a few weeks away tonight there will be two greyhounds trial in preparation for the Group 3 series.

Yindi Girl Turbo for trainer Matt Lanigan will trial for the series. She is a winner of 4 of her 8 starts with a 29.93 win at the Meadows to her credit 3 runs ago.
For The Alliance will also trial for trainer Jeff Britton. She is a winner of 3 of her 18 starts with 7 placings and ran 30.14 at the Meadows two runs ago.

Both will trial in between races tonight.

G-SIX AND G-EIGHT FROM AUGUST

In August GRSA identified some potential for the format to be modified to combine the G-SIX and G-EIGHT (8 dog field) formats at selected meetings with a view to maximising the balance and flow of nominations across the weekly Sky schedule supported by Tabcorp. GRSA is now working on a Hybrid approach.

Under the new framework, the more traditional G-EIGHT format will operate across the four legs of the Quadrella (typically the best four races on the card) for selected meetings, with the remainder of the meeting being graded as G-SIX. This is for Angle Park, Gawler and Mt Gambier.
Additionally, the heats and finals of all feature events or specifically identified races, as advised by the Racing Department, will run under the G-EIGHT (or ‘full field’) format and may or may not be used in the Quadrella.
In regard to tonight’s Angle Park meeting the Kings and Queens are programmed as races 2,3 and 4. These races could have been used in the Quaddie however some high grade 515m or 600m dogs or even stayers may have been made reserves or left out altogether. Last Monday night the Grading department made the Auction Final race 1 on Monday night with a full field of 8. The Grading department will continue to work within the parameters advised above with feature races used as they see fit in the G-EIGHT format.

GAWLER CLASSIC 2019 HEATS TOMORROW

The Gawler Classic series for 2019 kicks of tomorrow with two heats programmed worth $2,500 each.

With 14 nominations this was a terrific outcome considering this series has always struggled for nominations later in the year. The first 4 from each heat will qualify for next Friday’s $5,500 final on 6th September.
The next leg of this series will be the heats of the Classic 2019 Prelude (1) to be run at Angle Park on Monday 23rd September.

NO SLIPPING TRACK FOR A FEW HOURS TOMORROW AT ANGLE PARK

GRSA advise that the slipping track at Angle Park will be closed for a short time on Friday morning 9:30am to 11am due to filming taking place on the circle track.

GRSA apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

NO SATISFACTORY TRIALS AT MOUNT GAMBIER WHILE NEW KENNEL HOUSE BEING BUILT

The Mt Gambier GRC have advised GRSA that there will be No satisfactory trials on race days at Mount Gambier during the kennel house renovation due to the added pressures over the next 6 weeks.  An option may be to be conducted a STAT on Tuesday however this would have to be considered on a case by case basis by the clubs availability.

GOTBA OAKS & DERBY NOW ON SEPTEMBER 8

GRSA was advised by the GOTBA that this Sunday Coursing at Virginia would not be conducted due to crucial volunteer staff not being available.

The club had exhausted all options. The meeting will now be conducted on Sunday 8th September and will feature the Oaks and Derby.

The Oaks and Derby are for bitches and dogs whelped on or after 1/7/17 with greyhounds required to have competed at Coursing to be eligible.
The Waterloo Cup is on the following week on Sunday, 15th September with greyhounds with coursing form (either SA or Vic) will be given preference in selection.

SA OAKS AND SA DERBY IN SEPTEMBER

The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2017 (27 months) which has stayed the same as the last few years.
GRSA will continue to leave the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds, however, it is important that these series’ be supported by our local participants. If the series’ are not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to consider altering the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2020. In support of these series’ GRSA has kept the Heats of the Oaks on the same night as the Derby with Heats on Thursday, 12th September and the Group 3 Finals on Thursday, 19th September.

The Dates are:
Coffex Coffee Oaks (Group 3):
$5,545 Heats – Thursday, 12th September

$35,000 Final – Thursday, 19th September
• Nominations for the Heats close Monday, 9th September at 9.00am.

‘ORIGIN-AL’ PATH TO ADELAIDE CUP PART OF EXCITING CROSS-STATE INITIATIVES

Victorian and South Australian-based trainers will have a new direct path to the Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final under exciting new cross-State initiatives being introduced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and Greyhound Racing South Australia (GRSA).

The industry-first initiatives include the winner of GRSA’s State of Origin series, to be held at Angle Park on 26th September, being guaranteed a berth in the $75,000 to-the-winner Adelaide Cup Final on 11th October. The State of Origin series is run along similar lines to Sandown’s Speed Star, with four Vic-trained greyhounds clashing with four locals under match race conditions.
The State of Origin series was introduced in 2018 and is sure to create even greater interest among Victorian trainers in its second year with the inclusion of the massive carrot of bypassing the Adelaide Cup Heats.
A guaranteed Adelaide Cup spot isn’t the only benefit awaiting the State of Origin winner. In addition to gaining direct entry into the Adelaide Cup Final, the State of Origin victor will also secure a position in the Group 3 Sandown Shootout, the four-sprinter feature to be run on 14th November.
Another innovation will see the winner of the Adelaide Cup receive automatic entry, should connections accept, into the invitation-only Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows, which will be run this year on 9th November. With positions in the Adelaide Cup and Shootout on offer, State of Origin places will be keenly sought after and the winner of Sandown’s Speed Star series, to be held on 15th September, will be rewarded with one of the four Victorian spots in the Origin series.

1. Highest placed Victorian in the September Speed Star (15th September) at Sandown gains automatic entry (if they accept) into SA State Of Origin Race to represent Vic (26th September).
2. Winner of the SA State of Origin Race (SA or VIC greyhound) gains automatic entry (if they accept) into the Group 2 Shootout at Sandown (14th November).
3. Winner of the SA State of Origin (SA or VIC greyhound) (if they accept)will be guaranteed a spot into the Group 1 Adelaide Cup final (11th October) 2 weeks later (Bypasses the Heats).
4. Winner of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup gains automatic entry (if they accept) into the Group 1 Topgun at the Meadows (9th November).

CONDITIONS OF THE STATE OF ORIGIN SERIES:

The State of Origin Match Race series between South Australia and Victoria will be held on Thursday, 26th September.
Nominations close at 9am on Monday, 23rd September with GRSA.
Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or Victoria is based around the Nationals conditions. Greyhounds would need to be trained in either State 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the date of the race (26th September).
The best four greyhounds nominated from SA will be selected by the GRSA grader to represent SA. Victoria will already have a qualifier (if nominated) from their highest placed Victorian trained greyhound in their Speedstar series at Sandown on Sunday, 15th September. The other three best greyhounds nominated from Vic will be selected by the GRSA grader to represent Vic.
With the linking of the State Of Origin with the Adelaide Cup if a greyhound has qualified for another series on Adelaide Cup Final night they may be considered ineligible for the State Of Origin.
The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds including liaising with GRV for the Victorian selections. The SA Graders decision will be final. Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night. Reserves will be declared with one from SA and one from Victoria depending on nominations to replace the States representative if scratched. For example the SA reserve will only replace an SA scratching.
The Grader will rate the four greyhounds from each State in order from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest rated greyhound. The head to head matches will be decided by the two 1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect 1 to 4 with the 1 rated greyhounds receiving the most amount of money. However, the overall winner will still be determined based around the times the greyhounds run so all greyhounds have that opportunity.

PRIZEMONEY:
Winners of match races – 1 v 1 – Winner $4,750, 2 v 2 – Winner $4,500, 3 v 3 – Winner $4,250, 4 v 4 – Winner $4,000.
Overall State of Origin winner (based on overall times) $7,500, second $2,500, third $1,000.
The winner of the SA State of Origin (SA or VIC greyhound) will be guaranteed a spot (if they accept) into the Group 1 Adelaide Cup final (11th October) 2 weeks later and will be required to by pass the Heats.

Participants are advised that as from 1st September 2019 a new Transfer of Ownership Form is to be completed if wanting to seek grading exemptions.

The new Form has a Proof of Purchase section, this requires purchasers to lodge documentation confirming the purchase of the greyhound or if no documentation is available then it is a requirement for the Statutory Declaration to be completed.  If a Transfer of Ownership Form is lodged without the completion of this section then NO grading exemptions will be applied to the greyhound.  The form is available on our website and is also included in this edition of Kennel Capers.

GREYHOUND RACING SOUTH AUSTRALIA - 2019 SA COUNTRY CUP

Below are details of how and where greyhounds can qualify for the $7,500 SA Country Cup Final, to be run at Angle Park over 515 metres on Adelaide Cup G-SIX Final night Friday 11th October 2019.

Conditions
• All South Australian Greyhound Racing Clubs outside of Angle Park will conduct heats, or nominate greyhounds from which the Greyhound Racing SA Grading Department will choose two representatives. These meetings are Gawler Provincial 2, Murray Bridge One Turn Provincial 1 or 2 and Mount Gambier Provincial 2. (Performances at Gawler Provincial 1 meetings are not eligible for consideration)
• The event is open to all South Australian greyhounds that are not above Grade 5 at Angle Park (APK City A & APM City B meetings only) over 515 metres at the time of nomination. Winner of each event takes a penalty including the final.

Special Exceptions:
Mount Gambier Club is allowed to include non-South Australian trainers under strict conditions:
1. The trainer has had starters at 15 meetings for Mt Gambier in the previous 12 months.
2. The trainer can only qualify for one of the clubs.
3. The trainer must have trained the greyhound nominated for the previous 3 months.
• Graders’ discretion will be used to determine the best nominated.
• The greyhound must be SA trained (except Mount Gambier as above).
o A South Australian trained greyhound is defined as one that has been racing in SA for a period of not less than 3 out of the 6 months immediately prior to the time of nomination.
• The greyhound must have started at least 2 times in the last 12 months at the track it is attempting to represent.
• There will be a maximum of two heats per Club with the winners of each heat qualifying. If there is only one heat conducted then the first two placegetters will qualify. (up to 8 dog heats)
• The two reserves will be determined firstly by a ballot of the second placegetters from all heats. The third placegetters will then be considered by ballot if required. If a heat was not conducted at the track, then that track is not included in the ballot. Should a greyhound be withdrawn prior to the ballot, the next placed greyhound from that Club’s heat will be selected.
• Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another track in this series, unless there are insufficient nominations to fill the field.
• Once qualified for the Country Cup Final the greyhound will be ineligible for the Adelaide Cup series or any other race on this Cup Final night.
• Lead up Heats may be up to 8 greyhounds however the Final on Adelaide Cup night will be a G-SIX Final
