TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

We always look forward to our Thursday night racing and with a good mix over the 3 distances it makes for an interesting night for the punter. With 8 races over the sprint, two over the 600m and a top class 731m we should be able to snare a couple of handy winners throughout the night. As always, all races are Trifecta and First Four events. Good luck.

Race 1 - We tipped him last week and he got the chocolates and that is Pure Ability, he led throughout for a strong win here in a BON 30.02 and has won 4 of his last 5 all in good fashion. Dyna Vagrant found a heap of trouble here last start and is the likely improver. Box Up 3.4.5.7.

Race 2 - With a field of 5 in the maiden event I like the Greg Board trained Spring Kudu, he made good ground here last week from this draw when 2nd behind the handy Love Made Me in 30.24. Reiko Rocketta will be suited by the small field and should be right in the mix along with Maximum Magic. Box Up 1.4.5.7.

Race 3 - The inside 4 get the nod in this but it’s very hard to go past the pacey Victa Caleb as our top pick who won last week’s Champion Puppy Final. Oh Jay Korie along with Game Of Bones and Do The Hokey are all racing well and can run into the First Four. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

Race 4 - This is the distance affair of the night and the Tony Rasmussen trained Zudactyl Monelli is our top pick, he carved out a very slick 34.50 and won by 6 lengths last week over 600m. He won over this trip prior in 43.36 and should be very hard to beat again. Cairnlea Jet is making his debut over the journey and has been struggling to recapture his best form over the sprint, he had good form over the 600m and don’t be surprised if he opens up a big break early in this. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 5 - The Ben Rawlings kennel produced Zambora Tyler here last week over the 600m and he won in a handy 35.20 from this draw, he can only improve and should be hard to beat again. Bombastic Tim and Max Jake are more than capable when on song and are a must for our Trifecta. Box Up 2.4.7.8.

Race 6 - I like Mr. Arjay in a very open race, he is a veteran of 121 starts and will be doing his best work late. Harbormaster should start the punters elect but he is hit and miss on box rise if he lands on the lure he will be the one to beat. Born Billy for then minors. Box up 2.3.4.8.

Race 7 - The Rasmussen team can go home with another winner in Menzali, he is very smart and has a heap of early pace and with 3 wins from his past 4 starts we will put him on top. My Boy Tyler will add a heap of value for our First Four as he can sneak into the top four along with Marco Lee and Fox Gambler. Box Up 3.5.7.8.

Race 8 - Honcho Monelli proved far to strong here last week in very wet conditions and won by over 4 lengths in 30.10, he has a terrific record at this venue and should win again. Cairnlea Kenny found early trouble and battled on strongly and just finished outside the placings, he can improve from his inside draw along with Mepunga Gal and my Roughie Hukanui who has worked back to his best form. Box Up 2.4.5.7.

Race 9 - This is a handy event over the 600m, Aston Abbott is in outstanding form of late with wins over the sprint and the 600m, and he has a good turn of early pace and should prove very hard to beat. Spring Bloom is the big danger as she will get the perfect sit into the back and will be powering home. Add Thermal Strike and Who Said That for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 10 - Fabwik led them a merry dance here last start when winning by over 12L in a smart 29.71, she has moderate beginners around her so she should step and win again. Fantastic Chief is well drawn down on the fence and is dropping back in grade so he is the likely improver. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 11 - Its always nice to go home on a winner but the final event is a toughie so we will go with one in this at good each way odds in Spring Spinner, he won 2 starts ago over the 600m in a smart 35.11 leading throughout then was never in the hunt when unplaced over the same trip here last week, he will be at good value and hopefully run a cheeky race. Dashing Hope is a speedy type as is Spring King so they along with Waterloo Kate for the minors. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

2018 CROCMEDIA STATE HEATS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MONDAY

The State series’ for South Australia will be held at Angle Park next (Thursday, 2nd August) for the Heats with the State Finals on the 9th August.

In an effort to support this series ALL states will be conducting their Finals on the same night to be run within a 2 hour period on the 9th August. It makes for a great promotional concept.
• Nominations this year will close at the normal time with GRSA which will be at 9am on Monday, 30th July. This can be done by online, fax or lodged at GRSA.

A reminder to all trainers of the clause which requires a greyhound to have been domiciled in South Australia for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the nomination closing date to be eligible to represent SA. The date for this will be 16th May 2018.

GRSA will be running heats into a final. So long as there is enough to run a heat even if less than 8 runners GRSA will support this series in this format.

The National Finals this year will be held at Sandown in Victoria to be conducted on Friday, 24th August. Both the National Sprint and National Distance Finals will carry prizemoney of $75,000 to the winner.

TRAINERS FEE PAID UPSTAIRS TONIGHT AND NEXT THURSDAY

Due to staffing the Trainers Fee will be paid upstairs tonight and next Thursday in the Bistro Bar in Chaser’s Restaurant. The Race Night Office will be open until about 8.30pm for fields and results to be collected but will be unmanned.

AGRC/GRSA AUCTION (515M series)

The final race in the Auction series for those greyhounds bought through the 2016 Greyhound Auction will be $1,990 heats on Monday, 13th August at Angle Park with the $5,000 final on Monday, 20th August.
*Nominations for the heats close on Wednesday, 8th August with GRSA at 9.00am.*

OAKS AND DERBY ELIGIBILITY IN 2018

The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2016 (27 months) which has stayed the same as last year.
GRSA has left the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds however it is important that this series is supported by our local participants. If the series is not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to alter the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2019. To support these series’ GRSA has changed the heats of the Oaks to be run on the same night as the Derby with heats on Thursday 13th September and the Group 3 finals on Thursday 20th September.

UBET STATE OF ORIGIN MATCH RACE SERIES IN LATE SEPTEMBER

GRSA has introduced an exciting new feature “State of Origin” Match Race series sponsored by UBET in a lead up to the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup on Thursday, 29th September where 4 greyhounds from SA will take on 4 greyhounds from Victoria in one on one racing.
As a lead up to the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup we get many Victorian trainers travel across the border to race but mainly trial their greyhounds so their greyhound becomes familiar with the surroundings before competing in the Group 1 heats.  This is a great opportunity for SA to introduce a State of Origin Match Race series which will provide promotion, wagering and a terrific opportunity for the local and Interstate greyhounds to have a decent hit out prior to the series.

Conditions of the series:
The State of Origin Match Race series between South Australia and Victoria will be held on Thursday, 27th September this year, the week before the Adelaide Cup heats.

It will be the week of the AFL Grand Final so we may be able to tap into the SA verses Victoria rivalry particularly if Port Power or Adelaide Crows are in the Grand Final against a Victorian opponent. Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or Victoria would be based around the Nationals conditions. Greyhounds would need to be trained in either State 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the close of nominations.

GRSA will call for nominations which will close on Friday morning, 23rd September at 9am for the State of Origin Match Race series. The best four greyhounds nominated from SA and Victoria will be selected by the GRSA grader. The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds. The Graders decision will be final. Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night.

The Grader will rate the four greyhounds from each State in order from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest rated greyhound. The head to head matches will be decided by the two 1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect 1 to 4 with the 1 rated greyhounds receiving the most amount of money. However the overall winner will still be determined based around the times the greyhounds run so all greyhounds have that opportunity.

PRIZEMONEY:
Winners of match races –
1 v 1 – Winners $3,750
2 v 2 –  Winner $3,500
3 v 3 –  Winner $3,250
4 v 4 –  Winner $3,000
Overall State of Origin winner (based on overall times) $5,000, second $2,500, third $1,000

SCHEDULE & WAGERING:

This race would be race 4 on the program (outside of the Quadrella). It will make up 1 race on the 11 event card of racing. Race 4 will make up a field of the 8 greyhounds with 4 match races to be run around 10 minutes apart (total of 30 minutes).  UBET are sponsoring and are fully supportive of this concept from a wagering perspective. For tote purposes they will have the full suite of single race betting options and it makes for a perfect fixed odds bet type. Sky Racing has also provided their support around the concept.

PRIZEMONEY INCREASES FOR ANGLE PARK (CITY A) THURSDAY FROM JULY 1

As of July 1, Thursday Night Angle Park stakemoney across all grades has increased by 5%, reflecting the key role that the premier weekly meeting plays in attracting the highest quality outcomes from local breeding and interstate acquisitions. This will also benefit some of our feature events that will increase on Thursday nights.

TRAINERS TO RECEIVE $20 FROM 1ST JULY TO REPLACE $15 UNPLACED

The existing $15 unplaced payment that currently applies to a majority of SA greyhound races will be replaced by a new $20 Trainer Raceday Subsidy (TRS) from 1st July with 100% of that payment being allocated directly to trainers.

For clarity, this payment will be made in addition to the $60 trainer rebate and will be allocated to unplaced greyhounds under circumstances wherein the $15 payment would have previously applied. Unplaced payments of more than $20 will remain the same.

ICG MEETING TOMORROW

The next Industry Advisory Committee meeting will be held tomorrow (Friday 27th July) with an Agenda sent out earlier this week.

PARTICIPANT DRESS CODE

Stewards remind participants to ensure they comply with all requirements of the GRSA Dress Code when attending race meetings when involved in racing.

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Recently Kurt was able to extend his roster to not only do Thursday night meetings at Angle Park but also the Monday night and Wednesday day meetings, however, due to personal commitments he is unable to do Monday nights until later in the year. Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required, gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the Stewards on the day for access.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
