TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

It’s a HUGE night of racing here at headquarters with the final of the SA Distance Championship which is race 6 on the programme and the Anniversary Cup final Race 8, both events are first class and make for a terrific night for us punters. As always all races are Trifecta and First Four events and in recent weeks we have continued to have a decent return so we shouldn’t change here tonight.

Race 1 - I like the inside 3 in this, they look the better beginners and should be able to hold their run into the first turn. Allen Xander is very strong and from his draw will be hard to beat. Spring Shirl has won 2 of her past 3 in good times and is a must for our First Four. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 2 - The Maiden events have been tricky in recent weeks and we will go with another Rasmussen runner in Dyna Quire out in box 8, he loves to run into a place and has a handy record from wide draws. Fantastic Joey has been hit and miss on box rise but will be doing his best work late. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 3 - This is a wide open affair so it makes for a perfect First Four event for us. Emerley Mine for Judi Hurley looks well drawn and has very moderate beginners on his inside so he can be right in the finish. Aston Amo is a pacey type but her wins are far and few between. Add Exhibition and Click Here who both are more than capable when on song. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 4 - I love 600m racing and this particular event has several chances, Heading My Way should start the punters elect from her rails draw and won 2 starts back in a slick 35.19 leading throughout. Tyla Grace has only won 1 of 21 over this trip but has run into the placings in 12 of them she is my top pick at handy odds. Add Crackerjack Jake and Zipping Hawk for the placings. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

Race 5 - The Murray kennel are hard to tip against and they look to have a strong chance with the pacey Aston Kody despite his poor draw of 5, he is very smart when on the lure so we will put him on top. Nangar Bear has won 3 of his past 5 all in quick times and can’t be left out of calculations. Box Up 1.4.5.7.

Race 6 - This is the final of the SA Distance Championship with a handy $10,000 to the winner, it’s hard to go past Ashom Monelli down in box 1 as he should be able to hold the lead early and is very strong. Purpose Driven carved out a BON 43.25 here last week leading throughout defeating Eli Starlight by over 4 lengths and is a winner of 6 from 15 along with 9 placings and will go very close in a top class event.  We can’t leave out Springvale Cooke and Bekim Lucy’s for our First Four. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 7 - Hukanui missed the kick here last week in a heat of the Anniversary Cup and flew home late to run 3rd behind Fox Gambler in 29.81, he looks very hard to beat and looks one of the better bets of the night. Those looking to add some value to their Trifecta should look at adding Sweeping Strikes. Box Up 1.3.5.6.

Race 8 - The final of the Anniversary Cup over the sprint and this has brought together an outstanding field, On Fire resumed with an enormous run to finish 2nd behind Cairnlea Jet after finding a heap of trouble from box 4, he loves a wide box and will be the big improver in tonight’s final.  Honcho Monelli has been in the money in 10 of his 11 starts over this trip and ran a sizzling BON 29.50 here last week. Bean Monelli and Cairnlea Jet can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 9 - Well I have tipped him in recent weeks and the bank roll has gone in reverse BUT I won’t give up and we will go with Jay’s Ace once again, he has been missing the kick of late and from the inside draw and moderate beginners around him he has to be a chance. The dangers will come from the pacey Lonely Cowboy and Funky Monkey who will be getting home hard. Box Up 2.3.5.8.

Race 10 - Terpillar certainly has the credentials to bounce back and win here, he won in 30.03 earlier in the month at this venue and appears one of the main chances. Zulu General gets his chance to improve from the rails draw and looks one for our Trifecta. Charlie Chops and All About Corey can add the value. Box Up 1.3.4.6.

Race 11 - We can go home on a winner with the Petar Jovanovic trained Cairnlea Strider, he is VERY SMART when on the lure and has won in a slick 29.44 here in recent runs, he should be far too strong for these. Hope’s Beau is better than recent form suggests and is the likely improver Box Up 1.5.6.7.

NEW TRACK RECORD AT MOUNT GAMBIER

Last month the Philip Lenehan trained Victorian speedster Lektra Stomp claimed the 512m track record at Mt Gambier with a brilliant display in the heats of the Mt Gambier Cup running a sizzling 29.45.

Last Friday he lowered the time mark again by .1 of a second running a blistering 29.35 in winning by 12 lengths.

MOUNT GAMBIER SHUTDOWN FOR 2 ½ WEEKS

As advised previously GRSA and the Mt Gambier Club are planning to undertake some significant track works at the Mount Gambier venue this week.

The project will involve raising the cambers around the track to 10% on the turns and 4% on the straights. The proposed works are not a simple case of adding sand to increase the camber, with the positions of the existing starts and track access points all impacted by the increase to the camber.
Works are scheduled to occur from today (Thursday April 26th ) and the Club will have a break from racing for two and a half weeks with a return to racing planned for Sunday 13th May.

For this work to be carried out changes to the racing dates are listed below.
Mount Gambier – Sunday 29th April Day has been deleted
Mount Gambier – Friday 4th May Day has been deleted and replaced by Angle Park Day meeting
Mount Gambier – Sunday 6th May Day has been deleted

ANGLE PARK TO RACE NEXT FRIDAY

With the work being carried out at the Mt Gambier GRC over the next few weeks, Angle Park will race next Friday.

The meeting will be a Time Graded meeting.
• Nominations close at 9am on Monday 30th April

AGRC TO SPONSOR THE NEXT LOW GRADE FEATURE HEATS

The next low grade series at Angle Park will be run on Thursday, 3rd May with SA Bred Grade 5 Heats over the 515m.

The Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club has kindly sponsored this event with added prizemoney and a rug to the winning connections. The final will be worth $5,340 run on Thursday, 10th May.
*Nominations close on Monday, 30th April at 9.00am with GRSA.

2018 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON

The major race for Breeders 2018 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run on Wednesday, 16th May.

These will be followed by the Semi- Finals on May 24th and the $37,500 final on May 31st. Total prizemoney for heats and semis will be determined by the number of races run.
The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2018. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the Preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.
* Nominations close on Friday, 11th May with GRSA at 9.00am.

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Recently Kurt has been able to extend his roster to not only do Thursday nights meetings at Angle Park but also the Monday night and Wednesday day meetings however due to personal commitments he is unable to do Monday nights until later in the year.

Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the stewards on the day for access.

CLAIMING RACES BEING CONDUCTED

Specific claiming race conditions have been released for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.

Please check the most recent All Tracks calendar for the programming of these races will races listed on –
Monday 7th May – 515m
Wednesday 16th – 388m
Wednesday 30th May – 388m

MAIDENS ADDED TO ANGLE PARK THURSDAY NIGHTS

In response to the recent greyhound nominations on Thursday nights GRSA decided to add Maiden events to Thursday nights.

GRSA will continue to monitor greyhound nominations and make changes as required.
Additional Maidens -
3/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m (no final to be conducted)
10/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m
17/5/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m

ONE OFF HEATS CONDUCTED

When graded heats are programmed in the All Tracks calendar GRSA makes every effort to run as many heats as possible, however, on occasion there may only be sufficient nominations to run one heat.

GRSA supports those that nominated by running this as a heat to final, should there be ten greyhounds eligible, the reserves are then considered for the final even if they did not compete in the heat. This policy has been determined by the Grading Review Panel previously, they also determined that if there were less than eight runners then this one off heat should not be programmed. This policy was brought about due to the Grade 5 heats on Wednesday to a Monday night final being knocked about by scratching’s and injuries, where a few years ago when less than eight runners were in a heat it resulted in the final being a three dog race. If a heat is not run, then a normal graded race would then be considered. This has been put into practice for subsequent series’.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.

TRIAL FEES AT RACE MEETINGS FROM 1ST APRIL

With GRSA allowing for trials under certain conditions at race meetings, on occasions payment of these trials may have been overlooked.

From the 1st April any trainer trialling a greyhound at the race meeting will be required to pay staff as they would at a normal trial session. This will be consistent with all our racing and trialling meetings.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS NOW STARTING AT 6PM

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this started on Tuesday, 6th March.
It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers can book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. (Trainers cannot nominate into this timeslot)
Therefore, there will be two blocks of trials from 6pm to 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhounds to trial, after this staff will then conduct the Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night, which always used to be the case, where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises  from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA , litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
