Angle Park Preview - Thursday 25th January 2018
by The Shadow
It’s still a massive night of racing even though it’s a week late! Tonight we have the 6 Heats of the John Gray and the $15,000 to the winner of the 2018 Bargain Steel SA Sprint Final which is race 8 on the program. The kennel to follow is the Rasmussen team as they have several new additions from Interstate which could surprise at each way odds. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four with Race 1 having a guaranteed Trifecta pool of $10,000 and Race 8 a $10,000 First 4 Jackpot.
Race 1 - There is a bit of pace in this and we will stick with Don’t Kid Me down in box 2, he should be able to kick up early and will give them something to catch. Aston Kody is very smart when on song and is a must for the trifecta. Add in Spring Bloom who will be the one rattling home over the top of them. Box Up 2.3.5.7.
Race 2 - This is the first of the 6 heats of the John Gray and it’s hard to go past Windmill Haze who is absolutely flying at the moment over the 600m, he drops back to the sprint here but should be able to possie up and still win. Nangar Bear is a newcomer from Victoria and has a solid record as does Zipping Hawk who is another from across the border. Box Up 3.5.7.8.
Race 3 - Lauren Harris has Farmin in terrific form of late and he has won his last 3 all in good fashion so we will make him our top pick from his draw of 2. Windy Girl is from Interstate and is making her SA debut so she is worth keeping an eye on. Box Up 1.2.3.6.
Race 4 - The two main chances have drawn off the track in Lonely Cowboy and Lachlan Monelli, both are smart performers when on the lure and they look hard to split. Hot Marlow and Bar Room Brawler can round out the First Four. Box Up 2.4.7.8.
Race 5 - We will go with a newcomer in this the ex-WA performer Ashom Monelli, he has won 16 from 49 along with 17 placings and should be right in the finish at his SA debut. Spring Irish won from this draw in quick time at Gawler last start and can’t be left out of calculations. Add Matriculate who has a good turn of early pace. Box Up 1.4.6.8.
Race 6 - The Rasmussen team has another big chance in this with Honcho Monelli down in box 3, he won here in a more than handy 30.02 last start but will need to improve his box manners. Highbury Hustle is more than capable of surprising here and looks a value bet out in box 8, he has the pace to pinch this with an ounce of early luck. Add Hesa Marlow who loves to fill a place for our trifecta. Box Up 2.3.7.8.
Race 7 - This is a tricky event and the 3 main chances look to be Zellman, Zipping Zeus and Alpha Alexander, all have a chance and can win on their night. Motown Kenny is another form runner with 2 wins and 3 seconds from his last 5 starts. Box Up 3.4.5.6.
Race 8 - The Final of the SA Sprint and as mentioned earlier it carries a handy $15,000 to the winner. Hukanui was a massive run here last start when rattling home to win in a slick BON 29.52, from box 4 he should start the punters elect and will be very hard to beat. The improver should be Cairnlea Kenny who blew the start but battled on strongly to qualify and the inside draw should help. Pyredos Monelli should be rattling home for the minors. Box Up 2.5.6.8.
Race 9 - This is the 600m of the night and Topology is back to his pet distance where he has won 3 from 5, he can settle forward early and should be too strong. Jays Ace was a last start winner over the sprint in good time and the extra distance shouldn’t be a concern. Box Up 2.6.7.8.
Race 10 - There are several chances in this so we will go with a bit of pace in Pure Ability down in box 2, he looks the likely leader and is a must for our First Four. Click Here has been placed in 3 of her 4 runs here and will be working home late. Add Mazette who won on debut over the 416m at Strathalbyn. Box Up 2.4.6.7.
Race 11 - I love my distance racing and the Gavin Harris kennel holds all the aces in this and should run the Quinella. Springvale Carla will be very hard to beat again on her last 3 wins here, kennel mate Springvale Cooke will be rattling home and is edging closer to a win. Box Up 1.2.6.8
Race 12 – It’s always good to go home on a winner and we can do that with the Kirin Corby youngster Fabwik, she has a 100% record with 2 strong wins both in sub 30 here so we will make her our top section. Jolene Marlow can run into the placings from her rails draw as can Lucy Stardust out wide. Box Up 1.3.5.7.

ANGLE PARK LIGHTING UPDATE
Last week GRSA commenced the replacement of a section of old track lights along the front straight at Angle Park.
The old units, which are over 30 years old, were becoming problematic due to the ongoing maintenance requirement and the scarcity of replacement parts to keep them operating.
After assessing the options available, it was decided to move to the newest lighting technology available – LED sports lighting. This change in technology was always going to present problems once it was installed in only certain sections of the track, including the brightness levels between old and new, the colour ‘temperature’ of old and new, and the difficulty in fixing new lights to old infrastructure.
These challenges were highlighted on Monday night at the first race meeting since the installation occurred. GRSA has raised concerns with the lighting supplier and the electrical contractor regarding the inconsistency of lighting levels along the new section.
GRSA is currently working with the supplier to resolve the issue as promptly as possible. They have given GRSA a guarantee that the inconsistency issue will be resolved. In the mean time we ask for patience as management works through this issue.
ST LEGER HEATS ON WEDNESDAY 31ST JANUARY
The SA St Leger heats for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st July 2015 will be run on Wednesday next week with the likes of Zinfandel Zara, Fabwick, Long Gully Gus and Cairnlea Strider leading the nominations.
The semi-finals will be on Thursday, 8th February and the final on Thursday, 15th February.
Prizemoney for the St Leger series is –
Heats - $1,130, Semi Finals - $4,590, Final - $9,290
BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES
A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.
The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement. Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.
SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016
The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.
GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS
Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.
GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
