TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

There looks to be quality throughout the whole night here at headquarters, none other than two smart Semis of the Howard Ashton which are races 6 and 7, add to that the open event of the evening, Race 8 with a first class line up. As usual we can pick up some cash with our Trifectas and First Four picks and in recent weeks our specials and roughies have been right on the money.

Race 1 - We can kick off with the Petar Jovanovic trained Cairnlea Jet in box 3, he wasn’t disgraced when 5th at Sandown Park last start beaten just over 5 lengths in quick time, he won his previous 4 here all in good fashion and is our top pick. Add the newcomer Victor Dora who is very smart and Windmill Haze who will be making late ground. Box Up 3.4.7.8.

Race 2 - This is the Maiden event of the night and as usual it’s a wide-open affair, Striking Jewel has the form on the board and is close to breaking through. Dyna Quire is hit and miss early and will be doing his best late along with Dakota Cam. Box up 1.3.5.6.

Race 3 - I like one in this at healthy odds in Azumi Spice, she has good form over the short and the middle distance and has been well travelled of late. Feral lad should start the punters elect and appears to have a handy future. Box Up 2.5.6.8.

Race 4 - The inside 3 all have their claims in this, Allinga Val is a pacey type and has been in the money 23 of her 38 starts here so we will put her on top. Ready To Mingle can run a cheeky race now she is back on the fence so we can’t leave her out of our First Four. Add Mepunga Georgia and Destini Mermaid who will be running on late. Box Up 1.2.3.5.

Race 5 - Nations made his SA debut here last week and was very impressive when winning in 29.86 from box 6, he should only be improved by the run and the wide draw should enhance his chances. Marco Lee and the pacey Darcy Brown have claims and can be in it for a long way. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 6 - This is the first of the Howard Ashton Semis and it’s very hard to go past the inform Victa Louise out in box 7, she has won her past 6 all in quick times. Galactic Panther can run into the placings and can add a bit of value to our Trifecta. Box Up 2.3.7.8.

Race 7 - Kirin Corby puts the polish on Fabwik and she has her in fine form with 3 wins from her last 5 starts, she looks the likely leader and should be very hard to beat again. Up Time Girl along with Nirimba Pirate can fill the placings. Box Up 2.3.4.5.

Race 8 - This is the Open affair and what a quality line up we have, Honcho Monelli can carve out very quick times if left alone early. Cairnlea Strider is in the same category with 3 wins at his past 5 starts and he gets the nod from me. Hot Marlow along with the fast finishing Hukanui also have claims. Box Up 2.4.5.7.

Race 9 - Kenny Gill has High Eden Snow firing on all cylinders at the moment with 3 wins from his past 5 starts here, he has a perfect record over the 600m and looks very hard to beat again for mine. Jeebus Bird has his fair share of ability and is definitely the big danger so they can run the Quinella. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 10 - This is a wide open affair and I like one in this at each way odds in the Don Turner kennel Dynamo Jezz, he loves an inside draw and has moderate beginners around him. Zoro Bale is the big danger and has kept on improving since crossing the border. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 11 - It’s always good to go home on a winner and it’s very hard to go past Master Chaos who has won his past 6 in a row, he is a very handy type and looks the measuring stick again. Half A Mill was a terrific run here last week when 2nd from this draw and will be in the mix again. Add Bean Monelli who will be rattling home late. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON SEMI FINALS TONIGHT

There are two terrific semi finals tonight for the Group 3 Howard Ashton after 4 heats were run last Wednesday at Angle Park.

Heat winners were –
Victa Louise- 29.72
Tal Lee – 30.49
Breemelia Swift – 30.24
Fabwik– 30.01

With plenty of form in each semi final an upset result could be on the cards if some of the favourites are not on their game tonight as each greyhound looks to qualify for next week’s final.
As there are two Semi-Finals the first four from each semi final will qualify for next weeks final. The box draw will take place on track tonight, following race 8.

The 2018 Howard Ashton Final is a Group 3 event, with total prizemoney of $37,500. It is the main race series of Breeders 2018.

GROUP 1’s AT SANDOWN TONIGHT

It will be a big night at Sandown tonight with the running of three Group 1 events.

The Group 1 Sapphire Crown Final over 515m (race 5 at 6.55pm), Harrison Dawson over the 515m (race 6 at 7.19pm) and the $175,000 to the winner Sandown Cup Final over the 715m (race 8 at 7.58pm). It is one meeting not to be missed and you can catch all the action at Angle Park tonight.

OLDMATE BEN WINS HIS SECOND RACE AFTER 881 DAYS

Yesterday at Angle Park perseverance paid off for Oldmate Ben, his connections and trainer Ben Lowick who won his second career win after an 881 day drought.

Starting at the massive odds of $71.00 Oldmate Ben showed plenty of fight to put his nose in front when it mattered to win by a nose which is a feeling the son of Bogie King and Miss Mohar has only ever experienced on one occasion.

It has been a long journey for Oldmate Ben who started his career in NSW and spent a short time in WA before heading back to NSW. He won his first race at Dubbo on 17th December 2015 at only his 4th race start and connections must have thought the next win was just around the corner. Without much luck interstate he came to SA in March of last year being purchased locally by the Three Benz Syndicate which owners include Benjamin Bray and trainer Benjamin Lowick. He raced in SA on 53 occasions without a win until yesterday’s reward for effort.

Oldmate Ben’s career record now stands at 75 starts for 2 wins and 19 placings. Oldmate Ben is now 4 ¼ years old and after waiting nearly 2 ½ years for his second win hopefully his third comes a lot quicker.

CHANGES TO 6 MONTH TRIAL POLICY FROM JUNE 1

GRSA Stewards have recently undertaken a benchmarking exercise with other states around field sizes for greyhounds looking to return to racing after not competing for more than six (6) months.

The Stewards view is the spirit of the rule about unraced greyhound for more than six (6) months is to ensure the greyhound is fit to race.

In an effort to assist participants, the GRSA Trial Policy will be amended, to allow greyhounds which have not raced for more than six (6) months to be able to complete a satisfactory trial as a solo trial.  This change will take effect as of 1 June 2018. The provisions of GAR72 and GAR77A still apply.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.

Wednesday 13th June – 388m
Tuesday 19th June – 400m (Gawler)

MOUNT GAMBIER RUNNING ADDITIONAL FORTNIGHTLY THURSDAY MEETING

The Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club is running an additional fortnightly Thursday afternoon race meeting over the coming months.

The addition of these meetings follows consultation between the Club and GRSA on servicing local participants during the temporary closure of the Warrnambool Greyhound Club for refurbishments from May to August. With the pool of nominations for Mount Gambier coming from the South East region of SA and from across the border in country Victoria, it is believed that an extra meeting per fortnight will assist participation in the region. The change will result in Mount Gambier racing on a two week cycle of Friday/Sunday in the first week and then Thursday/Sunday in the second week.

GRSA have released extra dates in the first instance in late May, June and July to establish support, with the intent to add additional meetings in August whilst the Warrnambool works take place (estimated at 4 months). GRSA thanks the support of the Mt Gambier GRC, Radio TAB, staff and Sky Racing for their support for these extra meetings.
Date changes are listed below –
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 7th June 2018  (TAB) Day (Time Graded by Groups)
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 21st June 2018  (TAB) Day (Time Graded by Groups)
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 5th July 2018  (TAB) Day
Add: Mount Gambier – Thursday 19th July 2018  (TAB) Day

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
