Angle Park Preview - Thursday 23rd January 2014

23/01/2014
Racing News

The main race of tonight is race 8 on the programme, the John Gray Feature event over the sprint.  It has brought together a quality field after last week’s heats.  We get to see Ernie grace the track again in race 7 and hopefully continue on his winning way.

Race 1 and I am looking for a bit of pace from the boxes and that is Dee Dee Corsair.  He has struggled of late but is more than capable of turning things around.  Encosta Kahn has his paw on the till.  Add in Kaylarikki who will be rattling home late.  Box up 3.4.6.7.

Race 2 and this looks an open race.  Flying Tee is well drawn out in the 7 and will be right in this.  There are several hopes to fill the placing’s.  Box up 1.2.6.7.  Good Luck!!!

On to the third and Doona Bale struggled here last start but the inside draw is a bonus and for mine and will run a BIG race.  Magic Opinion is a newcomer in the Murray kennel and should sprint well fresh after a long layoff.  Box up 1.2.4.5

Race 4 and Off My Trout will return to the winners circle from the rails draw and can crack the 30 sec barrier.  Kennel mate Benchmark has been struggling of late and is more than capable on the right night.  Rocket To Excel and Koombooyana Boy can run into the top 3.

The 600m event is a handy race and Kalden Gambino has the form on the board  with box 1 a big help.  The inside 4 look the main chances.  Box up 1.2.3.4.

Race 6 and there are several main runners here who failed to perform last start and are all in the first 3 selections.  I will keep this short.  Box up in box order 1.3.6.8.

The seventh and the local champ in Ernie Bung Arrow should win again and make it 19 from 21.  He keeps on winning and loves the SA climate.  The Trifecta is wide open but Bogie Magic looks the pick of them to run second .  Box up 1.4.5.8.

Tercel is boxed to win from box 1 in the John Gray Final which is race 8  He carved out a quick 29.87 here last week from box 4 and will be very hard to beat again.  The dangers are Wild Soul, the pacey Mr Leonardo and George Again.  Box up 1.2.6.7.

Race 9, the Distance race of tonight and the Foster camp have a strong say with 4 runners.  They all have a chance and I am going with Zara Mclaren out of box 1 to break through.  Box up 1.3.5.6.

The tenth is a good betting race and there are several hopes.  When in doubt go with the draw.  Box 1 Excel Like Quade who can kick up and lead, Animate should be the improver out in 7 along with Fluer Bale.  Box up 1.6.7.8.

Race 11 and this looks one of the better bets of the night.  That is Sidney’s Shadow, she has to win this.  There are dangers though.  Box up 3.4.5.8.

Best Bet Race 11 No 4 Sidney’s Shadow & Race 7 No 5 Ernie Bung Arrow

Best Eachway -  Race 6 No 6 Casmay Bale

Best Roughie  -   Race 3 No 5 Maysoon Kahn

Best Trifecta Race 3 - box up 1.2.4.5.

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

ANGLE PARK NOMS FOR NEXT THURSDAY CLOSE TOMORROW

Trainers are reminded that the nominations for next Thursday nights Angle Park meeting close tomorrow (Friday 24th January) at 9.00am with GRSA due to the Australia Day Public Holiday on Monday.

JOHN GRAY FINAL

The main feature event on tonight’s card will be the running of the John Gray Final. This will be the nineteenth running of this grade five feature event and it should provide another strong race. We had seven exciting heats last week; the qualifiers were:

1st Dyna Denny – 30.45

1st Tercel – 29.87

1st Mr. Leonardo – 30.28

1st Victa Nicole – 30.30

1st As It Goes – 30.19

1st Wild Soul – 3022

1st George Again – 30.23

2nd Allen Illem – 30.30

(1st Res) 2nd Zipping Damo – 30.34

(2nd Res) 2nd Casmay Bale – 30.34

The box draw has made for an interesting race with pre post favourite Tercel drawing box 1 for Kim Johnstone who will be looking to go one better than last year after running second behind Grainne O’Malley. He has good speed but could get crossed early by the likes of Mr. Leonardo or George Again. He is very strong and will be hard to hold of along with kennel mate Wild Soul who could get the cheap run on the rails and be flashing home. The race is full of winning form with some extremely talented sprinters all looking to win in this prestigious race.

The Final carries prizemoney of $6,875 and a trophy and is supported by the Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club, a gift for the winner has been donated by long time greyhound supporter and friend of the Gray family, Ron Johnson. As an added bonus for punters TattsBet have included a Trifecta Jackpot of $10,346 on the John Gray Final which should see the pool reach around $60,000.

MAIN POINTS FROM GRADING REVIEW PANEL

The main points that will affect participants from the recommendation and implementation from the Grading Review Panel are –

GRP Members

Membership of the GRP would benefit from periodical rotation to encourage fresh perspectives on the SA grading system. Both Gavin Harris who already sits on the ICG and John Vivian advised that they would be willing to come off the panel if there were other candidates available. We have already received an application to join the GRP to meet at the end of this year. To be determined by CEO and Racing Manager.

Comments on Nominations Marked “Only”

The panel resolved that “Only” should be disregarded over all distances and the grading left to the Grader.  With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler later this month the panel believed this should be introduced for a trial period. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st February 2014.

The Grader appreciates trainers putting comments on their nomination and generally tries to assist where possible.

Transition to Separate Grading at Gawler

Separate Grading will now commence at Gawler in February. Tuesday (Provincial 1) will be different to both Friday and Sunday (Provincial 2) for grading. Greyhounds will keep their current grade when Gawler is separated for both tracks. GRSA will program more Grade 6 heats and finals from January onwards at Gawler to assist with maximising Grade 6 returns.

With the introduction of separate grading at Gawler the Grade 6 rules will change. The changes will allow for two more wins at Gawler for SA Bred greyhounds (two tracks) and 1 more win for Non SA Bred greyhounds making it a maximum of 4. With the separation there will be really no more opportunity to“beat the grader”.

Grade 6 rules will change to -

GRADE 6

For greyhounds that have not won a Grade 5 or above at the track at the time of nomination.

However a greyhound will be ineligible for Grade 6 events if it has won an APM or APK Grade 5 or above event over 515m. (5NP races in SA are exempt)

Non-SA Bred Greyhounds:

Non-SA Bred Greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a 'Beat The Grader' win) at up to four different tracks in South Australia. This is a maximum of four (4) Grade 6 wins (5 with a 'Beat the Grader' win/s) in total." At least two (2) of the wins must be away from Angle Park.

Once a greyhound wins its fourth Grade 6 (5 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win/s), at any tracks where it is still eligible for Grade 6 grade, it will revert to a Grade 5.

SA Bred Greyhound

For City (APK & APM) tracks, SA Bred greyhounds are eligible to win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) at each track. At Provincial Tracks (APD, Gawler Provincial 1, Gawler Provincial 2, Strathalbyn & Mount Gambier) SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over 2 different distances at that track. At Country Tracks, SA Bred greyhounds can win one (1) Grade 6 (2 with a ‘Beat the Grader’ win) over each distance at that track.

For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park APK, APM and APD and Gawler Provincial 1 and Gawler Provincial 2 are considered as “different tracks”.

Only to be introduced for meetings programmed when separation occurs.

Strathalbyn 319m

The 319m at Strathalbyn will be included on the Order of Preference at the same level as the 388m for Angle Park. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Mt Gambier Corresponding Meeting

Mt Gambier corresponding meetings will be considered on a weekly basis, Friday-Sunday-Friday etc. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Heats Programmed

When Heats are programmed the Grader will form the view that all eligible greyhounds will be included into the heats, unless the nomination clearly states otherwise ie No Heats. The only exception would be for Cup series where the trainers would need to nominate. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Grade 6 winning Grade 5/Open Event

A Grade 6 greyhound will only take one grade from Grade 6 to Grade 5 for winning a Grade 5 or Open Event  however if it was an Open Group series then the greyhound will be graded as a Grade 4. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Re-Grading of High Grade Greyhounds

It was agreed that 388m at Angle Park and 400m at Gawler to be considered for re-grading in line with the approach to distance races at these tracks. ie re-grading will only occur for short course events at these tracks for Grade 3 or higher greyhounds. At Angle Park over 388m a trainer can apply for a re-grade after two unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. At Gawler over 400m a trainer can apply for a re-grade after four unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. Having met this criteria, the onus is on the trainer to apply for a re-grade prior to the close of nominations. Only one distance will be considered for a downgrade per meeting. For the purposes of this Grading Rule, Angle Park APK, APM and APD will be considered as “different tracks” along with Gawler Tuesday and Gawler Friday/Sunday. To be introduced for meetings programmed 1st January 2014.

Veterans Races

Subsequent to the last meeting the GRP were concerned with the lack of Veterans races being conducted and recommended a slight change to the conditions of the race to allow a greater opportunity for these older greyhounds. It was agreed to -

  •  the age restriction open to 3 ½ years and advise that 4yo and older greyhounds will be given preference and then the race will then be made up of the next oldest greyhounds nominated in order of age (oldest first. If they are identical age they are separated on form). Trainers must still nominate for the race.

To be introduced from 1st February 2014.

GRSA WEBSITE – VIDEO’S

The facility for video replays is available for all SATAB tracks on the GRSA website, go to the Race Results page and click on the race and the video will be available in the right corner of the page. The race results go backwards for about 5 days on the website so if you are looking for a video that happened two weeks ago then you will be able to You Tube the race at www.youtube.com/saracereplays.

TREATMENT BOOKS

With the new rules regarding Treatment Books being introduced from the 1st January it is recommended that all trainers keep a documented history of all treatments for each of their greyhounds as per the new rules. GRSA has been in the process of assisting trainers with specific treatment books however they are still being finalised and should be available early in the new year.
