TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The 11-event programme here at headquarters certainly looks challenging to the eye, but in recent weeks we have been able to snare a few good Trifectas and First Fours so tonight shouldn’t be any different. How good is the Distance affair (race 4), where we see On Fire step up over the 731m. He has been first class in recent runs over the 600m and takes on kennel mate Purpose Driven and the inform Springvale Cooke.

Race 1 - I like the inside 3 here, all should be on the pace early and are very strong in the run home. Windmill Haze should start the punters elect and with luck early would prove very hard to beat. Nangar Bear is very capable and if able to lead is my top pick. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 2 - This is a maiden event where the youngsters step out on the big stage, the Brodie Jessup trained Get Up Jess can bounce back from her last start 6th where she was checked from pillar to post and never looked a chance from box 3, she is a big chance of leading. Able has good short course form and is a must for the First Four. Box Up 2.3.5.6.

Race 3 - The wide draw of 7 brings Emerley Nolen right into calculations in this, he is moderate away but musters quickly so he should be able to be handy into the back straight. Click Here and Bushiri are more than capable on their night. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 4 - This is the Distance event of the night and it is top class, On Fire carved out a slick 34.76 over the 600m here last week and won by over 11 lengths, if he can handle the extra trip he looks the one to beat. Purpose Driven had every chance here last week after leading but should strip fitter for the run. Add the inform Springvale Cooke who stormed home to win by over 4L and is only getting stronger. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

Race 5 - Crimson Sally has been racing well over the short and is a chance of pinching this if she is able to lead clearly. Mepunga Georgia is a lot better than her past couple suggest so a win wouldn’t surprise. Becky Bale loves to fill a place and the inside draw is a bonus. Box Up 2.3.5.6.

Race 6 - This is a wide-open affair and the 3 main chances look to be 3 last start winners in Aston Kody, Pyredos Monelli and Cairnlea Gump, they can all crack the 30 second barrier on their night so they are a must for our First Four. Hesa Marlow is well drawn down on fence and can add a bit of value. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

Race 7 - The Rasmussen team rarely leaves the track without a winner and they certainly have a chance with Zudactyl Monelli out in box 8, he won on debut here in 30.49 on a slow track and should keep on improving. Cairnlea Strider is a lot better than his past couple and should get a clear run early with moderate beginners on his inside. Add in Born Billy who loves the rails. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 8 - This is a wide open affair with at least 5 good chances, I will stick with the box draw and go with Hot Marlow down on the fence, he was a last start winner here in 29.83 and should prove very hard to beat on that effort. My Boy Tyler is the form runner with 3 wins and 2 placings from his last 5 so he is a must for the First Four along with Croydon Boys. Box Up 1.4.5.7.

Race 9 - The visitor from Mt Gambier Swift Moment, is my top pick in this, he has been in the money at 11 of his 15 starts and should be able to kick off his city debut with a win. Cinnamon Rose can run into the placings from her draw along with Serene Machine who has been missing the kick in recent runs from wide draws. Box Up 1.3.6.7.

Race 10 - I like the inside 2 in this and there isn’t a lot between them, they can nearly run the Quinella and they are Larrikin Locky and Bar Room Brawler. Sketchy Gun has been hit and miss recently but is more than capable with a clear run early. Box Up 1.2.3.5.

Race 11 - Let’s hope we are in front as this is a toughie, my roughie of the night is Prophetess in box 3, her wins are far and few between but she should find this a little easier than her past couple. Miss Jasmine and Gunnadoo Trooper should start amongst the favourites and they have to be in our First Four. Box Up 1.3.5.6.

RASMUSSEN TEAM READY FOR AUSTRALIAN CUP

HEATS ON SATURDAY

Team Rasmussen will again venture across the border this Saturday night with their greyhounds to compete in the heats of the Australian Cup at the Meadows.

They have Hukanui engaged in the 6th heat of the Cup due to be run at 8.47pm (SA Time), he has again drawn the carpark out in box 8. Honcho Monelli will compete in the last heat of the Cup due to be run at 9.27pm (SA Time) and has drawn box 4. They also have Ashom Monelli competing in the heats of the Super Stayers. He is in the second heat to be run at 9.50pm (SA Time) and has drawn perfectly in box 1, he should handle the extra staying distance. We wish them and connections the best of luck.

LAUNCHING PAD SA SERIES FINAL NEXT THURSDAY

Three Heats of the 2018 Launching Pad SA Series were run yesterday at Angle Park with some exceptional performances.

Heat winners were -
Panhandle Slim - 29.99 (quick run home of 12.66 when came from well back)
Fabwik - 29.75 (leading throughout)
Cairnlea Jet - 29.81 (strong at the end after racing up on the pace)

The final will be run on Thursday night worth $4,590 over the 515m at Angle Park with qualifiers being listed below (box draw to be conducted on Monday) -
Abuzz  Cameron Butcher
Cairnlea Jet  Petar Jovanovic
Fabwik  Kirin Corby
Joeli Magic  Bosco Stamenkovic
Panhandle Slim  Ray Murray
Shae’s Magic  Greg Board
Tal Lee  Bosco Stamenkovic
Up Time Girl  Cameron Butcher
Aiming (1st Res)  Cameron Butcher
Ben Nevis (2nd Res)  Laurie Cahalan

The winner of the Final will take their spot in the Launching Pad Heats two weeks later at Sandown after GRSA purchased a ticket some months ago, with Semi-Finals on Thursday, 22nd March and the $150,000 to the winner Final run on Thursday, 29th March. If the winner of the SA Final for whatever reason cannot take their spot then the next qualified greyhound will be given that spot.  GRSA restricted the SA series to 1-4 wins and 28 starts at nomination time incase a greyhound wins both the heat and final so this will still keep them eligible for the Sandown series which is for greyhounds that have won between 1 and 6 races and have not had more than 30 starts at close of nominations.
GRSA has been advised that there are still tickets left for the Sandown Launching Pad series so even if a greyhound doesn’t win the final connections can still purchase a ticket through the Sandown GRC (cost $2,000).

STEWARDS NOTICE –

Change to interpretation of first offence for failing to pursue and marring

GRSA Stewards draw all participants attention to sub-section (2) of both GAR 69 and 69A, in relation to failing to pursue and marring which reads:

The period of suspension imposed to sub-rule (1) shall be-
a. In the case of a first offence, at the track where the offence occurred, 28 days and until the completion of a satisfactory trial.

Stewards note the purpose of the Rule was to encourage the trainer to allow the greyhound to have a period of time away from the track where the offence occurred and for an opportunity of work to be undertaken in relation to the greyhound’s racing manners.

It has been common practice historically in SA to allow a greyhound with this offence to trial at the same track and be cleared prior to the 28 days.

Effective immediately, GRSA Stewards will interpret the above Rule as - a greyhound which has had a 28 day suspension placed on them for a first offence for failing to pursue or marring, will not be allowed to undertake a satisfactory trial at the track where the offence occurred, until that period of suspension has expired. Greyhounds will be permitted to undertake a satisfactory trial at another track if they wish to continue to race or wait out the 28 days to requalify at the track where the offence occurred.

Any greyhound with a current 28 day suspension for a first offence for failing to pursue or marring will be obliged to requalify under the new conditions.

This change to the previous management of this Rule will bring GRSA into line with the other greyhound jurisdictions. Please contact Chief Steward Des Jonas for any clarification of the above Rule.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS TO START AT 6PM FROM 6TH MARCH

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this will commence with the first trial session on Tuesday, 6th March.

It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers will be able to book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. Trials will start at 6.00pm with the first two blocks until 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhound trials after this staff will then conduct Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night (which always used to be the case) where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.
This will be for a 3 month trial period.

CLAIMING RACES TO BE TRIALLED IN MARCH

After the last Grading Review Panel meeting late last year the panel determined that claiming races would be trialled to see what sort of response this would have from the Industry.

Claiming races are a regular thing in harness racing and was last programmed in greyhound racing a few years ago in NSW. There are specific rules around claiming events but basically greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price (ie $2,500). Prior to the event new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts. Any prizemoney won will be retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.
It would be the intention to run a 388m (14th March) and 515m (26th March) claiming event in March. Full terms and conditions will be available on the GRSA website shortly.

RACING DATES CHANGES IN APRIL

Due to programming the Mount Gambier meeting on Friday 6th April 2018 will be deleted and Strathalbyn on 6th April 2018 will be added.

GRSA thanks both the Mt Gambier Club and the Strathalbyn Club for their support in this change.

Delete: Mount Gambier – Friday 6th April 2018  (TAB) Day
Add: Strathalbyn – Friday 6th April 2018  (TAB) Day

GRSA HOT WEATHER POLICY UPDATE

GRSA advises that an updated version of the Hot Weather Policy came into effect last week.

The main changes that participants need to be aware off are:
• All weather forecasts will be sourced from BoM (this used to be Weatherzone)
• The kennel house will be open half an hour earlier for kennelling if the forecast temperature at the corresponding regional centre is 32°C or above
For any questions regarding the policy the please contact GRSA’s Integrity Department. The policy in full can be viewed on the GRSA website.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.

The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.

GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
