TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight’s racing here at Angle Park is certainly wide open, we have a 10-event programme with a good mixture over the 515m, 600m and my favourite the 731m. The trainers to follow look to be the Rasmussen kennel as usual, Butchers and the Rawlings team, don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - We kick off with a handy Grade 6 and the main chances look to be Spring King down in box 1 the pacey Sir Puppo along with Pawesome Nelly. The value runner is Striking Jewel who is very hit and miss on box rise. Box Up 1.2.5.6.

Race 2 - Dyna Quire is having his 17th try to crack his Maiden and from the rails draw tonight he has to be a big chance. Spring Kudu didn’t have much luck here on debut and should be the improver, add Dakota Cam who charged home late here last start for the Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

Race 3 - This is a wide-open affair and Zoro Bale can improve from his draw of 1 tonight, he is tardy on box rise but should be able to kick up early and should be at each way odds. Alicante Bouchet won on debut in 30.25 here last week and should start the punters elect but will need to ping from the wide draw. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 4 - The Cameron Butcher team has a strong chance with Purpose Driven who is resuming after a short let up, she is very strong with wins over all 3 distances at this track and should sprint well fresh. The big danger is the ultra-consistent Spring Bloom who will be doing her best work over the last 100m. Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 5 - Its very hard to go past the inform Honcho Monelli in this, he has won 3 of his past 5 all in quick times and looks the measuring stick from his draw of 7. Barwell Boy and Pyredos Monelli are both well drawn and can run into the placings along with Hukanui. Box Up 1.2.5.7.

Race 6 - This is the Stayers Cup Heat and it is certainly a quality line up, the main chances should be the Tony Rasmussen pair in Zudactyl Monelli and Jeebus Bird, both are very smart on their night and are well suited over this trip. On Fire and Springvale Cooke can’t be left out as they both have very good records over this trip. Box Up 1.6.7.8.

Race 7 - There is a heap of early speed in this event and Darcy Brown continues to run into the placings and has a terrific record at this venue. Snakebite Bale is knocking on the door and will be rattling home late, add Slippers Time who is a chance of pinching this if he jumps. Box Up 2.5.6.7.

Race 8 - The Ben Rawlings trained Agent Thirteen has a picket fence next to her name with 5 wins on the trot here and Gawler, she is boxed for a bold showing again and is our top pick. Windmill Haze will be running on late and is a must for the Trifecta along with Harbormaster who loves to run a place. Box Up 1.2.5.6.

Race 9 - With only 5 runners in the field we need the early leader and that looks to be Mr. Worldwide for the Jamie Quinlivian kennel, he was a last start winner here in 30.00 from box 8 and should lead and win again. Croydon Boys will be the one running on along with Who Said That. Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 10 - We love to go home on a winner and we can do that with Mepunga Gal down in box 2, she has won 4 of her past 5 here all in good times and should be very hard to beat again. Born Billy and Dyna Soren can round out our Trifecta and put That Dude in for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

BAYROAD QUEEN STAYERS CUP HEAT TONIGHT

There will be one heat of the Bayroad Queen Stayer’s Cup tonight at Angle Park.

In support of the stayer’s GRSA determined that this race would be one heat into a final next week which remains consistent with these feature staying events. The likes of Zudactyl Monelli, Jeebus Bird, On Fire, Springvale Cooke and interstate visitor Moment To Rumba will all do battle. The box draw for next week’s $7,000 final will be conducted oncourse after the greyhounds compete in Race 6 at 8.28pm tonight.

At the most recent Grading Review Panel meeting it was confirmed to rename the Stayer’s Cup to the Bayroad Queen Stayer’s Cup in recognition of one of the best local staying greyhounds to ever grace the track. Bayroad Queen was owned by Merv and Glenys Pedler and was trained by Merv. She was born in December of 1979 and in 1982 was considered the best stayer in the country. In 1982 she won the National Distance Championship at Angle Park, the Ford Fury Cup (Association Cup) at Harold Park and the Genevieve Hoisery Cup at Olympic Park (the best staying race in Victoria) and was named the SA Greyhound of the Year.

In 1982 she broke a 13 year dominance of NSW and Victoria of the National Distance Championship when she won at Angle Park. She won races in four states around the country winning races from 512m to 750m. She broke the 731m track record at Angle Park on two occasions within a month running 44.17 on 14/1/82 and 43.88 on 4/2/82. She had 36 starts for 25 wins and 8 placings with prizemoney in excess of $40,000 and in 1982 that could have bought you a house. After racing she was a very handy brood bitch having a few litters with plenty of success with greyhounds winning multiple races out of Sires by Chariot Supreme, Acacia Park and Walkabout Sid.

FUTURITY PAYMENTS DUE NEXT FRIDAY

Owners of SA Bred greyhounds are reminded that the next batch of Futurity payments are due on Friday 29th June 2018.

There will be three series’ for which payments will need to be made.

The payments due are:

Classic 2018 – Final Payment Pups Born July 16 to Dec 16
This payment is for greyhounds for which the first two Sustaining Payments have been made. The Final Payment is $121 per greyhound.

Breeders 2019 – Second Payment - Pups Born Jan 17 to June 17
This payment is for greyhounds for which the first Sustaining Payment was made last December. The Second Sustaining Payment is $55 per pup or a Final Payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

Classic 2019 – First Payment - Pups Born July 17 to Dec 17
Finally the First Payment is due for Classic 2019. All SA Bred greyhounds born in the above period are eligible to make this payment. The First Payment is $27.50 per pup or a “one-off” Final payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

To assist all owners of Futurity eligible pups, reminders were posted this week. It is perhaps a good idea to make the payment as soon as you can, so it doesn’t slip your mind and the closing date passes. If you have sold a pup/s we would ask if you can either forward on the information or let Caralyn Fielden know at GRSA and she can follow it up. If you haven’t received a reminder and you think you should have, contact us asap.

PRIZEMONEY INCREASES FOR ANGLE PARK (CITY A) THURSDAY FROM JULY 1

As of July 1, Thursday Night Angle Park stakemoney across all grades will increase by 5%, reflecting the key role that the premier weekly meeting plays in attracting the highest quality outcomes from local breeding and interstate acquisitions.

This will also benefit some of our feature events that will increase on Thursday nights.

TRAINERS TO RECEIVE $20 FROM 1ST JULY TO REPLACE $15 UNPLACED

The existing $15 unplaced payment that currently applies to a majority of SA greyhound races will be replaced by a new $20 Trainer Raceday Subsidy (TRS) from 1st July with 100% of that payment being allocated directly to trainers.

For clarity, this payment will be made in addition to the $60 trainer rebate and will be allocated to unplaced greyhounds under circumstances wherein the $15 payment would have previously applied. Unplaced payments of more than $20 will remain the same.

GRADING REVIEW PANEL GRADING OUTCOMES

The minutes from the Grading Review Panel which met on Friday 25th May were released in kennel capers last week.

Below is a specific recommendations of items discussed set for implementation from 1st July –

• Time Grading Update - The panel agreed to introduce a policy that relates to the time rating. If a greyhound has a rating more than 50% less that the highest rated dog in the individual race then this greyhound would be left out. Maiden events are excluded from this policy. For example if in one race the highest rated dog is 13 and the lowest rated dog is 7 (stays in), 6.50 (stays in), 6.25 (not eligible). The Grader will manage this process. To be implemented for meetings from 1st July 2018.
• Pathway Prizemoney at Port Augusta – The panel confirmed the breakdown if Pathway Prizemoney at Pot Augusta. This is purely about the money breakdown and not about how greyhounds are selected. This is at the Clubs discretion if they choose to run selected races (grades) on their program with this money breakdown.
• Maiden’s, Grade 6’s & Grade 5’s over 500+m - The panel suggested mixing Maidens with Grade 6’s and Grade 6’s with Grade 5’s when there is not enough to run a full race of each grade over the 500m + distance. The panel determined if there is 6 Grade 6’s and 2 Grade 5’s then this could be mixed however if the Grade 6 was in the All Tracks Calendar then this should not be done and a 6 dog race conducted. Also would only be done if only making up one race and not a case of the left over dogs from one race being mixed with greyhounds that do not have sufficient nominations to run one race. The panel believed the Grader could manage this process in support of 500+ racing at his discretion effective from 1st July 2018.
• Grade 6 Conditions - It was agreed to remove the APM City B condition to allow greyhounds to win a Grade 5 at that venue like at Gawler or APD which will not affect their Grade 6 at other tracks. The panel determined that it was important for this to start from meetings graded from 1st July 2018 in support of current Monday night racing.
They also agreed to change the conditions of Grade 6 regarding winning over the different distance for Non SA Bred greyhounds which falls into line with what SA bred greyhounds can do. The outcome being a Non SA Bred Greyhound can win a Grade 6 400m at Gawler Provincial 1 and then win a Grade 6 531m at Gawler Provincial 1. This will count as 2 of the greyhounds 4 wins. Bearing in mind for example any greyhound that wins a Grade 6 400m, then wins a Grade 5 400m at the venue and become a Grade 4 will not be eligible for Grade 6’s over the other distances which has been in place for a number of years.
The panel determined for this to start from meetings graded from 1st July 2018.

A reminder to trainers that if they do not want to be in a type of race that they make it clear on their nomination. For example “No Pathway” or “No Masters”. If in regard to a graded event like an Open or Mixed race just putting “Only” on your nomination is not accepted (approved by the GRP previously), if trainers do not want their greyhounds in this event they must put “No Mixed or leave me out” for example.

CHANGES TO 6 MONTH TRIAL POLICY FROM JUNE 1

GRSA Stewards have recently undertaken a benchmarking exercise with other states around field sizes for greyhounds looking to return to racing after not competing for more than six (6) months.

The Stewards view is the spirit of the rule about unraced greyhound for more than six (6) months is to ensure the greyhound is fit to race.

In an effort to assist participants, the GRSA Trial Policy will be amended, to allow greyhounds which have not raced for more than six (6) months to be able to complete a satisfactory trial as a solo trial.  This change will take effect as of 1 June 2018. The provisions of GAR72 and GAR77A still apply.

CLAIMING RACES BEING CONDUCTED

There are specific claiming race conditions for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race. These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing. Conditions refer to no more than $2,500 or $5,000 claiming prize.

Races are programmed on –
Wednesday 27th June – 388m (up to $2,500)
Wednesday 11th July – 388m (up to $5,000)
Sunday 15th July – 400m (Gawler – up to $5,000)
Wednesday 25th July (up to $5,000)

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required, gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the Stewards on the day for access.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
