TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The highlight of tonight’s racing is the 2018 John Gray Final which is race 8 on the programme, the powerful Rasmussen kennel holds a strong hand in this with two runners. The quality of the field is outstanding so good luck to all concerned. Don’t forget all races are First Four and Trifecta events with Race 1 a guaranteed Trifecta pool of $10,000.

Race 1 - The inside 3 here all have a chance but we will go with the Lauren Harris trained Zipping Hawk down in box 1. He flew home late here on his debut when 2nd in 30.20 from a wide draw last week and should appreciate the rails tonight. Tag And Release has pace as does Lonely Cowboy. The value runner for our trifecta is the inform Bone Jarrer. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 2 - Victa Ollie has been racing well and loves the draw he has tonight (1), he should be able to kick up early and take holding out. Joeli Magic has good short course form and is sure to be in the mix for a long way. Add Spring Irish who will be doing his best work late. Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 3 - The Rasmussen kennel rarely goes home without a winner and they look to have a strong chance with Addison’s Way down in box 1, she is only a moderate beginner but the rails should be a huge benefit. Motown Kenny is the inform runner and is a must for our First Four. Box Up 1.2.7.8.

Race 4 - This is a very smart 600m event with 3 main chances. Purpose Driven and Windmill Haze should set the pace and can run quick times when out in front while Topology will be stalking them into the back and will be flying home over the top of them. Box Up all the evens 2.4.6.8.

Race 5 - I like one in this at each way odds in Windy Girl, she missed the kick badly on her debut here last week and flashed home late to pinch 4th from box 6, she should be the big improver tonight from her draw of 2. Honcho Monelli is another who continues to miss the start but has good field sense so he is a must again for Trifecta punters. Box Up 2.4.6.7.

Race 6 - This is a wide-open affair, a small field of 6 makes me pick Spring Bloom down in box 2 as she will be high flying into the back straight and take holding out when it counts. Becky Bale is more than capable on her night as is the pacey Slippers Time. Box Up 2.5.7.8.

Race 7 - Hukanui showed them a front running display when winning last weeks SA Sprint Final in a BON 29.65 from box 5, tonight he looks far too strong again and it will be interesting how quick he can go as he has a personal best of 29.43 here. Cairnlea Kenny appears the main danger again and Don’t Kid Me out wide for value. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 8 - The Final of the John Gray and it’s certainly a classy field, as mentioned earlier I like the Rasmussen pair in Lachlan Monelli and Ashom Monelli as both won their heats in good fashion and should only keep on improving. Farmin for Lauren Harris has pace as does Cairnlea Gump so they are a must for our First Four. Box Up 2.3.4.5.

Race 9 - This is the Distance affair of the night and the Gavin Harris trained Springvale Cookie will be the one to beat again on last weeks win, she won by over 9L in a more than handy 43.22. Acheron loves to run into the money and should do so again tonight. Box Up 2.5.7.8.

Race 10 - Troy Murray has 2 strong chances in this with Cain Hoy and Terpillar, both are good beginners and have been in fine form. Mazette can improve along with Serene Machine who will be making late ground. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 11 - Nicole Newlyn can train the last winner of the night with Bye Felicia, she wasn’t disgraced when 3rd here behind Alpha Alexander in good time at her most recent start. Fox Gambler can improve along with Ready to Mingle. Box Up 1.2.3.6

ANGLE PARK LIGHTING UPDATE / TRACK TURNOVER / CHANGE TO TRIALS

Experts from Tigerlight Australia visited Angle Park late last week to assess some issues with the new lighting units.

At that meeting it was determined that the LED chips that make up the lighting units were suffering from some discolouration towards the edge of the beams.

The experts are certain that this discolouration is the cause of the striping effect on the track surface, which can be addressed by implementing new LED chips in all the lighting units. As such, an order has already been placed from overseas and replacement parts are expected to arrive early next week.

Installation will occur on the afternoon of Friday 9th February, continuing into the morning of Saturday 10th February. This will require the transfer of the normal Saturday morning trial session to Sunday 11th February.

The Maintenance team will also take this as an opportunity to perform a track turnover and grade of the Angle Park surface on Friday 9th February.

EARLIER START FOR ANGLE PARK MONDAY

Please note that Angle Park Monday night will start at 5.45pm with the last of 10 at 8.57pm. Kenneling will be from 4.15pm to 5.00pm.

These challenges were highlighted on Monday night at the first race meeting since the installation occurred. GRSA has raised concerns with the lighting supplier (Tigerlight Australia) and the electrical contractor (QI Electrical) regarding the inconsistency of lighting levels along the new section.

GRSA is currently working with Tigerlight Australia to resolve the issue as promptly as possible. Tomorrow evening representatives of Tigerlight will fly from Sydney to Angle Park to analyse and refine the new lighting units and provide recommendations for improvement. They have given GRSA a guarantee that the inconsistency issue will be resolved.

In the meantime we ask for patience as management works through this issue

GRSA HOT WEATHER POLICY UPDATE

GRSA advises that an updated version of the Hot Weather Policy came into effect last week.
The main changes that participants need to be aware off are:
• All weather forecasts will be sourced from BoM (this used to be Weatherzone)
• The kennel house will be open half an hour earlier for kennelling if the forecast temperature at the corresponding regional centre is 32°C or above

For any questions regarding the policy the please contact GRSA’s Integrity Department. The policy in full can be viewed on the GRSA website.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:

• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)

• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.

• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.

• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.

• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.

• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018

• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.

GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
