TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight is massive! We have 6 heats of the John Gray, the SA Sprint Final and a quality distance affair. Add to that a 12-event programme, let’s hope we can start the night off with a winner or two and don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events. The first race will start slightly later than normal due to heat at 7.22pm and is the guaranteed $10,000 Trifecta Pool so it well worth a crack!

Race 1 -  I like one here who has been in terrific form and that is Highbury Hustle down in box 2, his form from inside draws is first class and with his early pace will be hard to beat. Lachlan Monelli was very impressive at his first SA start winning in 29.98; he will only improve and should start the punters elect. Box Up 2.4.5.6.

Race 2 - The inside two will be the front runners here; they both are very strong in the run home but should be able to gain a clear run early. The value runner for mine is Wheel Spinner who has drawn out wide and he is more than capable with a clear run. Box Up 1.2.5.8.

Race 3 - The Ben Rawlings kennel has a new arrival with Windy Girl down in box 1, the Ex-Qld sprinter has won 13 from 62 along with 21 placings, she appears to have early pace and was a last start winner at Albion Park back in December, so we will make her our top pick. Zipping Hawk and Matriculate can fill the placings. Box Up 1.3.5.8.

Race 4 - I like the inside three here and they are all very smart on their night, Cairnlea Strider is racing well and when on the lure can carve out quick times. Add Funky Monkey for value for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 5 - I love a Western so we will go with Lonely Cowboy out in box 8; he has won 4 from his last 5 starts and has the pace to cross these from his wide draw. The dangers will come from Honcho Monelli and Bereluke as they both will be running on late. Box Up 1.3.4.8.

Race 6 - The Tony Rasmussen kennel has another new one from WA in Ashom Monelli, he has 16 wins and 17 placings from his 49 career starts and should appreciate the drop-in grade here. High Eden Snow has been struggling of late but on his best form would take a power of beating. Add Mighty Barcia and Sally’s Girl for the First Four. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 7 - This appears a race for Don’t Kid Me after Barton Bale was scratched. He has terrific box speed and can carve out slick times when out in front. Spring Bloom and Rip It Ralph for the minors. Box Up 2.3.5.6.

Race 8 - This is the Final of the SA Sprint which carries $15,000 to the winner and boy is this an open affair. Hukanui is the inform runner with 2 slick wins here at his past couple, with a clear run he is certainly the dog to beat. High Eden Frost will ping the lids and with an ounce of luck can open up a handy lead. Cairnlea Kenny missed the kick terribly last week but is a lot better than that so he is a must for our Trifecta.  Add Pyredos Monelli who will be flying late. Box Up 1.2.5.6.

Race 9 - We love our 600m racing and tonight’s event has a couple of quality runners, it’s very hard to go past Topology despite his draw he has a terrific record over this trip and should start the punters elect. Paddy Macs has the form on the board and is drawn for a perfect run. Box Up 1.3.5.8.

Race 10 - This is the Distance affair of the night and as mention in recent weeks the Gavin Harris pair in Springvale Cooke and Springvale Carla will be hard to beat, both love this trip so they should nearly run the Quinella. Aston Harvey had a very good record in Victoria and is one to watch. Box Up 2.3.6.8.

Race 11 - The well-bred Up Time Girl was very impressive at her first start winning in a handy 30.14, she has a good turn of early pace and gets the nod for us. Springvale Choix will be flying home late and can run into the places. Box Up 1.4.5.7.

Race 12 - I like the inside 3 in this but it’s very hard to go past the Kirin Corby flying machine in Fabwik, she has won at both her starts here in sub 30 and looks very hard to beat again. Click Here and Victa Ollie can fill the places. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

2018 BARGAIN STEEL CENTRE SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL TONIGHT

The best locally trained sprinters in the State gathered at Angle Park last week in two heats of the Bargain Steel Centre SA Sprint Championships.

The fastest qualifier for tonights final was in the second heat when Hukanui for trainer Tony Rasmussen produced and outstanding performance to easily account for his rivals. He began nicely from box 4 and speared across with Greysynd Ebony who flew the lids from box 3 to lead. Down the back straight Hukanui quickly put paid to Greysynd Ebony and ran to the front. Purpose Driven and Mr. Arjay came out of the pack to make ground nicely however they were no match for Hukanui who raced away for a strong win. He ran a blistering 29.52 for the 515m journey with splits of 4.45 & 16.92 in winning by 4 ½ lengths and whilst drawing box 5 tonight he has to be one of the favourites for the Sprint feature.

The first heat last week was taken out by the Jan Jones trained High Eden Frost who led throughout and withheld strong challenges over the concluding stages from Becky and Pyredos Monelli. High Eden Frost ran a slick 29.79 with splits of 4.43 and 16.82 in winning by just under 1 length. He has drawn perfectly in box 1 tonight and did run third in the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup back in October from the same box.

Tonights $22,000 Listed feature will be run as Race 8 tonight.

The Final field in Box Draw order is:

1.  High Eden Frost                                           Jan Jones

2.  Cairnlea Kenny                                            Petar Jovanovic

JOHN GRAY HEATS TONIGHT WITH FINAL ON JANUARY 25

It will be a huge night of racing on Thursday January 25 (night before Australia Day) at Angle Park with the running of the $9,290 John Gray Final.

This event is for Grade 5 greyhounds over the 515m and has always been well supported by the Industry with 6 terrific heats tonight. Who will join last year’s winner Gun McBain, on the honour roll for this year?

A special mention to the AGRC who again are supporting the John Gray Final in 2018 and have been great supporters of this race for many years. Special thanks to local racing identity Ron Johnson who kindly donates a trophy each year for the winning connections.

The box draw for next week’s final will be conducted on course tonight after the running of Race 7.

NEW RACE TRACK LIGHTING INSTALLED FOR ANGLE PARK

• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)

• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. • An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

2018 GAWLER PRODUCE STAKES

After nominations were finalised for the 2018 Gawler Produce Stakes there were 106 nominations.

We will have guaranteed final stakemoney of $22,000 with an estimate for the total series prizemoney around $40,000. The series is for greyhounds whelped in 2016.

The racing dates for this series will be heats on Sunday, 24th June 2018, semi-finals on Sunday, 1st July 2018 and the final on Sunday, 8th July 2018.

GRSA administers the event for the Gawler Club, so all payments are to be made to GRSA. If you have already made the one off payment then there is nothing more to do however if you only made the first payment, the second lot of payments will be due on 2nd February  2018 with the third and final payment due on 6th April 2018.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.

GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends however it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
