TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

After last week’s effort I need to redeem myself as it was a major struggle throughout the night with a couple of big upsets. We can bounce back and there appear a couple of good things on our 11-event programme. As usual all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - There looks to be 2 main chances in Talitha Cumi and Shimando, both have won their past couple in good fashion and should nearly run the Quinella. Dashing Hope is well drawn tonight and must be close to a win. Box Up 3.4.6.8.

Race 2 - The Maiden event of the night and the Lauren Harris kennel looks to have a strong chance with her runners in Max Dream and Come On Enzo with the later having his 1st start for the kennel since crossing the border. Hilltop Tales ran a handy 3rd on debut last week and will only be improved by the run. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 3 - Now this is a more than handy race with a stack of chances, I like Honcho Monelli down in box 2. He found early trouble in the Sprint Final last week and still ran 2nd, he should get the early sit and prove the one to beat. Kennel mate Nations can bounce back from his fall and will be the main danger. Add Windmill Haze and Menzali for value. Box Up 1.2.6.7.

Race 4 - This is the Distance affair of the night and we will go with the well credentialed Zambora Tyler down in Box 2, he has terrific form over the 600m and has won in quick times so he should be out in front carving out slick sectionals on his distance debut. Springvale Choix will be grinding home as will San Tan Sam. Box Up 2.5.7.8.

Race 5 - The Lisa Rasmussen trained Don Lesta looks one of the better bets on the programme, he found a heap of trouble here last start when unplaced behind Amity Marlow. He has moderate beginners on his inside so I would expect him to be very handy into the back. Fantastic Chief is very strong but tends to miss the kick; he will be running on strongly. Box Up the inside four. 1.2.3.4.

Race 6 - Jan Jones should go home a winner after Dream A Little leads and wins from box 1, she is very smart when on song and should go very close from the rails draw. Bella Trix and Aston Abbott both have strong claims and can’t be overlooked. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 7 - This is a toughie as there are a heap of chances, I like the pacey Bogie Bullet out in box 7, she won here 2 starts back in 29.96 and was placed here Monday behind Fabwik in a slick 29.62, she can lead and win. Victor Dora is back in grade and should be the improver. Box Up 1.4.5.7.

Race 8 - I like one in this at each way odds with the Colin Swain trained Pool Hall, she won here 2 runs back in a slick 29.99 from box 8 and then was a very handy winner at Gawler, she is well drawn and will be very hard to beat. Lachlan Monelli is very smart when on the lure and should start the punters elect. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 9 - With only the 6 runners it will make for a very interesting event, Pure Ability is very smart and despite his draw will be very hard to beat. Stack The Aces looks the likely leader and is my pick at good odds, he is very strong and should take holding out on the run home. Dyna Soren and Mepunga Gal are both in terrific form and will be right in the finish. Box up 1.2.4.7.

Race 10 - Victa Ashley has been in good form of late and should continue despite the poor draw here, he won here late July in 29.94 and was a last start winner here by over 5 length’s so we will put him on top. Spring Spinner can bounce back and run into the placings along with Spider Regis at big odds for our Trifecta. Box Up 3.5.7.8.

Race 11 - I like the inside 4 here and we must go with our tip from last week in Nod Ya Head down in box 1, he led everywhere bar the winning post when a very good 2nd in 30.23 and hopefully can go one better. Staunch As and Woodside King along with Its A Treat are all chances of running into the money. Box Up 1.2.3.4.

VELOCITY LILLY & CAIRNLEA KENNY OFF TO VICTORIA FOR THE CROCMEDIA NATIONALS

Velocity Lilly for Kim Johnstone created one of the upsets of the season when she claimed victory in the State Final of the Distance Championship last week and in the process booked her spot in the Group 1 Nationals in Victoria in on Friday 24th August. She will be up against two of the best stayers ever seen so we wish her the best.
Joining her in the Garden State will be Cairnlea Kenny for trainer Petar Jovanovic who went one better than last years final when he ran second and booked his spot in the Group 1 Crocmedia National final after a brilliant win. He has drawn well in box 1 in the final and looks an eachway chance.

SPRING BRIDGE AND PANHANDLE SLIM TAKING ON CRANBOURNE PUPPY CLASSIC HEATS

Exciting prospect Spring Bridge for Greg Board will be in Victoria tomorrow night for the heats of the Group 3 Cranbourne Puppy Classic.

He has drawn box 8 in race 6 at 8.05pm SA time (2nd heat). With three heats he would need to run in the first two or be one of the quickest third placegetters to make Saturday weeks final. Also in the same heat is Group 1 winner My Redeemer and SA Owned and Bred Panhandle Slim who has drawn box 1 recently sent across from Ray Murray’s kennel to the powerful Seona Thompson kennel. This is one race not to be missed.

GOTBA WATERLOO CUP 26th AUGUST

The feature meeting of the Coursing season will be conducted on Sunday, 26th August at Virginia highlighted by the 2018 GOTBA Waterloo Cup.

Also on the program will be the Oaks and Derby for bitches and dogs whelped on or after 1/7/16.
*Nominations close on Wednesday, 22nd August with GRSA at 9.00am.*

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE LATER THIS MONTH

Again this year GRSA will conduct the Kings and Queens Feature series with Heats on Thursday, 30th August and a $7,000 Final on Thursday, 6th September in support of those greyhounds affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics change a few years ago.

The eligibility for this series is for dogs and bitches whelped between 1st March 2016 and 31st May 2016.
Performed Maidens are eligible (raced or qualy trialled).
It will be dependent upon nominations, however we would like to run a dogs heat and a bitches heat separately with greyhounds qualifying into the Final. If there are not sufficient nominations for either sex then these heats may be mixed as a one off heat into a final or a couple of mixed heats. Special conditions apply however these races will be non-penalty.
• Nominations close Monday 27th August at 9.00am with GRSA.

GAWLER SHOW DATES AND CHANGES

August means that it is coming up to Gawler Show time, so some Gawler meetings will be transferred to Strathalbyn and Angle Park this year.
This year the Annual Gawler Show will be held on the weekend of Saturday, 25th and Sunday, 26th August. Racing on Sunday night, 26th August will be at Strathalbyn. Racing on Tuesday, 28th August will be at Angle Park with this meeting being an Angle Park Provincial (APD) fixture with normal Tuesday prizemoney and will be raced with the Finish On Lure.
Racing on Friday, 24th August will be at Mount Gambier.
Trials will be cancelled at Gawler on Wednesday, 22nd August and Thursday, 23rd August due to Show preparations. We will hopefully have the track ready to trial again on Wednesday, 29th August, but this will be dependent on the weather over the show weekend. There will be trials at Angle Park on Tuesday, 21st August and on Saturday, 25th August.

HUGE SPRING CARNIVAL BONUSES FOR OAKS/DERBY, ADELAIDE CUP AND MATCH RACE SERIES

Greyhound Racing SA in support of our Spring Carnival is delighted to announce significant bonuses attached to our major feature races over the next few months.

There will be two fantastic bonuses –
a. There will be a $25,000 double bonus if a greyhound can win the Group 3 SA Oaks Final (20/9) or Group 3 SA Derby Final (20/9) and the Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final (12/10).  Should there be a dead heat in any of these Finals the bonus will be split accordingly with a maximum of $25,000 being paid for the double bonus.
b. There will be a $20,000 South Australian trainer bonus and a $10,000 Interstate trainer bonus if a trainer can win two feature events over two of our three feature race nights –
1. Oaks/Derby Finals (20/9)  or 2. Match Race Overall Winner (27/9)  or 3. Adelaide Cup Final (12/10). There will be a maximum of one bonus per Trainer. Should there be a dead heat in any of these events the bonus will be split accordingly with a maximum of $40,000 being paid for the trainer bonus.  To be eligible to win the trainer bonus the greyhound is to be registered in your kennel no later than one month prior to the Adelaide Cup Final (12/10).

GROUP 3 OAKS AND DERBY SERIES’ NEXT MONTH

The Group 3 SA Oaks and SA Derby to be run in September this year will be for greyhounds whelped on or after 1st June 2016 (27 months) which has stayed the same as last year. GRSA has left the eligibility date at 27 months in support of trainers, breeders and owners of young up and coming greyhounds, however, it is important that these series’ be supported by our local participants.
If the series’ are not supported with nominations locally and from Interstate then GRSA will have no option but to consider altering the age restriction to 30 months to ensure sufficient support for these races in 2019. To support these series’ GRSA has changed the heats of the Oaks to be run on the same night as the Derby with heats on Thursday, 13th September and the Group 3 Finals on Thursday, 20th September.

The Dates are:
Coffex Coffee Oaks (Group 3):
$4,820 Heats x 8 – Thursday, 13th September
$35,000 Final – Thursday, 20th September
BGC Industrial Cleaning Supplies SA Derby (Group 3):

• Nominations for the heats close Monday, 10th September at 9.00am.

STATE OF ORIGIN MATCH RACE SERIES IN LATE SEPTEMBER

GRSA has introduced an exciting new feature “State of Origin” Match Race series in a lead up to the Group 1 Adelaide Cup on Thursday, 29th September where 4 greyhounds from SA will take on 4 greyhounds from Victoria in one on one racing.

CONDITIONS OF THE SERIES:
The State of Origin Match Race series between South Australia and Victoria will be held on Thursday, 27th September this year, the week before the Adelaide Cup heats.
Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or Victoria would be based around the Nationals conditions. Greyhounds would need to be trained in either State 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the close of nominations.

GRSA will call for nominations which will close on Friday morning, 23rd September at 9am for the State of Origin Match Race series. The best four greyhounds nominated from SA and Victoria will be selected by the GRSA grader. The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds. The Graders decision will be final. Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night. Reserves will be declared with one from SA and one from Victoria depending on nominations to replace the States representative if scratched. For example the SA reserve will only replace an SA scratching.

The Grader will rate the four greyhounds from each State in order from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest rated greyhound. The head to head matches will be decided by the two 1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4. Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect 1 to 4 with the 1 rated greyhounds receiving the most amount of money. However the overall winner will still be determined based around the times the greyhounds run so all greyhounds have that opportunity.

PRIZEMONEY:
Winners of match races –
1 v 1 – Winner $3,750
2 v 2 –  Winner $3,500
3 v 3 –  Winner $3,250
4 v 4 –  Winner $3,000

Overall State of Origin winner (based on overall times) $5,000, second $2,500, third $1,000

2018 SA COUNTRY CUP

Details of how and where greyhounds can qualify for the $7,375 SA Country Cup Final, to be run at Angle Park over 515 metres on Adelaide Cup Final night Friday, 12th October 2018 were released last week with special conditions.

Conditions
• All South Australian Greyhound Racing Clubs outside of Angle Park will conduct heats, or nominate greyhounds from which the Greyhound Racing SA Grading Department will choose two representatives. These meetings are Gawler Provincial 2, Strathalbyn Provincial 2, Mount Gambier Provincial 2 and Port Augusta Country. (Performances at Gawler Provincial 1 meetings are not eligible for consideration)
• The event is open to all South Australian greyhounds that are not above Grade 5 at Angle Park (APK City A & APM City B meetings only) over 515 metres at the time of nomination. Winner of each event takes a penalty including the Final.
Special Exceptions:
Mount Gambier and Port Augusta Clubs are allowed to include non-South Australian trainers under strict conditions:
1. The trainer has had starters at 5 meetings for Pt Augusta and 15 meetings for Mt Gambier in the previous 12 months.
2. The trainer can only qualify for one of the Clubs.
3. The trainer must have trained the greyhound nominated for the previous 3 months.
• Graders’ discretion will be used to determine the best nominated.
• The greyhound must be SA trained (except Mount Gambier & Port Augusta as above).
o A South Australian trained greyhound is defined as one that has been racing in SA for a period of not less than 3 out of the 6 months immediately prior to the time of nomination.
• The greyhound must have started at least 2 times in the last 12 months at the track it is attempting to represent.
• There will be a maximum of two heats per Club with the winners of each heat qualifying. If there is only one heat conducted then the first two placegetters will qualify.
• The two reserves will be determined firstly by a ballot of the second placegetters from all heats. The third placegetters will then be considered by ballot if required. If a heat was not conducted at the track, then that track is not included in the ballot. Should a greyhound be withdrawn prior to the ballot, the next placed greyhound from that Club’s heat will be selected.
• Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another track in this series, unless there are insufficient nominations to fill the field.
• Once qualified for the Country Cup Final the greyhound will be ineligible for the Adelaide Cup series or any other race on this Cup Final night.

AGRC/GRSA GREYHOUND AUCTION IN OCTOBER

The Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club in conjunction with Greyhound Racing SA will again conduct a Greyhound Auction this year in October, however, there will be some significant changes to the conditions.

The most notable will be NO race attached to the Auction Series for puppies, however, the Auction has been opened up to not only include pups but Ready for Racing greyhounds and Brood Bitches.

Below are the details regarding the series -
Greyhound Auction Date – Sunday, 21st October
Categories for Auction–
Pups – 4 months to 11 months (whelping date – born 1st October 2017 to 30th June 2018)
Ready for Racing –
12 months to 19 months (if named and raced must trial in some way)
20 months or older (must solo trial over 274m, 388m or 515m. Handslip optional)
Trials to be conducted on Monday night or Wednesday Day at race meeting to be filmed the week prior to the Auction. Footage to be available on the GRSA website prior to Auction. Prefer all greyhounds to trial on the same night

Nomination Fees  - All greyhounds 12 months and older will be $50 nomination fee, Puppies 4 months to 11 months will be $50 for the first pup for each vendor from that litter and then $20 per pup for each other pup from that litter. Swabbing – It will be the intention of the Integrity staff to swab all greyhounds that trial in public for the Auction.
Catalogue – Whatever the vendor puts on their nomination form is what will be published in the catalogue. It is crucial that vendors give sufficient information to ensure the best chances of sale.

KURT DONSBERG – ONCOURSE RACE NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Recently Kurt was able to extend his roster to not only do Thursday night meetings at Angle Park but also the Monday night and Wednesday day meetings, however, due to personal commitments he is unable to do Monday nights until later in the year.

Kurt will continue as normal with Thursdays and also Wednesdays based on his availability.

On those days/nights of racing when Kurt is not oncourse GRSA will continue to allow participants to take their own presentation photos and if required, gain access to the presentation area. Please just liaise with the Stewards on the day for access.

ACCELL THERAPY MAT NOW AVAILABLE AT ANGLE PARK

The mat is now available in the foyer area of the Angle Park building.

It is recommended that a greyhound derives benefit with a 15 to 20 minute session and is generally for recovery from racing or injury. It will be available during normal office hours to be used (greyhounds racing on that day excluded). Please ask the Racing Admin staff if you wish to use the mat. GRSA is working towards making this available also during trial sessions.
