TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

There are highlights a plenty at headquarters tonight, we have the St Patrick’s Day Sprint which is race 6 on the programme and the Final of the 2018 Breeders Prelude (1) which is race 8.  The kennel to follow for mine is the Cameron Butcher team, they look to have three main chances throughout the night. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - Mr. Arjay looks a likely improver from the inside draw and add the pacey Tullabung Betty for value. Box Up 3.4.5.6.

Race 2 - this is the open maiden Final and it’s very hard to go past the Michael Stewart trained Sir Puppo who was very impressive on his debut here last week winning in a slick 29.77, on that effort he is our top pick, ex WA performer Fantastic Chief was a game 2nd and is well drawn and can’t be dismissed. Box Up 1.2.3.5.

Race 3 - this is a wide-open affair with at least five main chances, I’m sticking with the inside two in Total Magic and Aston Amo, both have been around the mark in recent starts and should use their draw to advantage, Spring Irish can be tardy early but will be the one rattling home over the top of them all. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 4 - Another wide open affair in this one a number of chances! Fabwik for trainer Kirin Corby has been in strong form and has the inside draw as an advantage so would expect her to be right in this. Flying Ellen is also going well for trainer Troy Murray while the Ben Rawlings trained Agent Thirteen has been in great form at Gawler and gets her first start at Angle Park. Dunkirk could run a very handy race from box 3 also. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 5 - Purpose Driven has been racing well against top company over the 731m in recent starts and tonight she drops back to the sprint where she has won in the past in very quick times, it’s very hard to tip against her despite her poor draw, Rip It Ralph will add huge value to our First Four from his rails draw along with Larrikin Locky. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 6 - this is the St Patrick’s Day Sprint and On Fire has taken to the longer journey like a duck to water and he is another who is dropping sharply in distance back to the sprint in this, he has a tremendous record over the 515m and is boxed to win, Honcho Monelli was checked from pillar to post early here last week and still won by 11 Lengths in a BON 29.60 he will be right in the finish. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 7  - there looks to be several chances in this and several of them have a good turn of early pace, we will go with the Scott Feltus trained Marco Lee out in box 8, he likes being drawn off the track and is a chance of pinching this, Born Billy should start the punters elect but he can be hit and miss on box rise, he will be doing his best work over the last 100m. Box Up 3.5.6.8.

Race 8 - this is the Final of the 2018 Breeders Prelude (1) and the Cameron Butcher kennel has 3 runners in this, they all look a chance, so we will go with Abuzz down in box 2 he pinged the lids here last week and won in a smart 29.83 we will put his litter mate in for 2nd Up Time Girl who carved up her opposition winning by over 12 lengths in 29.96 add Tal Lee who held time honours here last start with a slick 29.81 run for the Trifecta. Box Up 2.5.6.7.

Race 9 - the 600m of the night and the small field should suite Zudactyl Monelli out in box 6 he is only moderate early so the extra trip should only benefit, Tyla Grace and Aston Harvey are well credentialed and can fill the placings. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 10 - this is a wide-open affair to go home on and the main chances appear to be the Troy Murray trained Ethics down in box 3 and the Lauren Harris trained Mazette out in box 8, both are more than capable with a clear run, so they are a must for our First Four add Miss Jasmine and Crackerjack Glen who has terrific short course form. Box Up 3.6.7.8.

MAIDENS ADDED TO ANGLE PARK THURSDAY NIGHTS

Additional Maidens -
22/3/18 - $2,200 Open Maiden - 515m
29/3/18 - $2,200 Heats Open Maiden - 515m ($3,190 Final 5/4)

CLAIMING RACE CONDITIONS RELEASED

Specific claiming race conditions have been released for these events, but basically, greyhounds are graded into an event with a claiming price.

Prior to the event, new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts with any prizemoney won being retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing. The next race is scheduled for Angle Park on Monday, 26th March over 515m.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS NOW STARTING AT 6PM

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a three month trial period, this started on Tuesday, 6th March.

It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers can book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. (Trainers cannot nominate into this timeslot)

Therefore, there will be two blocks of trials from 6pm to 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhounds to trial, after this staff will then conduct the Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night, which always used to be the case, where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.

CONFIRMING WEIGHT TRIAL RULE (R39 (2))

Ensuring participants are aware that Rule 39 (2) which deals with a greyhound that has not competed for more than 28 days.

To make it clear, for example, if a greyhound last competed on the 1st March it can next compete on 30th March so long as there is a less that 2kg variance.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.

The first phase of that framework has commenced with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the super bonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race.

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups.

GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
