TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The racing here at headquarters tonight is all quality and the headline act is Race 8 on the programme the final of the SA St Leger, this event has several quality youngsters engaged so it makes for a very good final. Add to the night a strong 600m and 731m where the Cameron Butcher kennel will have a very big say. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events and we had several good wins last week boxing up our 4 main selections.

Race 1 - We can kick start the night with an early winner with Tullabung Betty in the Lauren Harris kenne,l she can be hit and miss early but from the rails draw should be right in the mix. Paua To Kapau will come out running and looks the big danger. Box Up the inside brigade. 1.2.3.4.

Race 2 - The Troy Murray camp has Flying Ellen in fine form of late and with moderate beginners on her inside she should be able to lead and win. Click Here has been very consistent and appears a place chance as does Lucky Stardust. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 3 - This looks a nice race for the Ray Fewings sprinter Don’t Kid Me, he has drawn well down in box 1 and looks one of the better bets of the night. Zipping Zeus flew home late to win here last start and should finish amongst them again. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 4 - The Cameron Butcher kennel has several runners tonight and they have a strong chance with On Fire, he has been crying out for the extra trip and won here last start in a smart 35.19 coming from midfield so we will put him on top. Spring Bloom and Topology are the BIG dangers. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 5 - This is a wide open affair so there should be plenty of value for our First Four. Cairnlea Strider found a heap of early trouble here last week but was flying before that effort so we will make him our top selection. Bar Room Brawler will be doing his best work late as will Becky Bale and we cant leave out Hot Marlow who is very capable when on the lure. Box Up 3.4.6.8.

Race 6 - The 731m event of the night and the Butcher team look very hard to beat with Purpose Driven in box 5, she has won her past couple over the 600m in slick times and she has a good record over the journey. Springvale Cooke has the pace to be amongst them again and hasn’t missed a cheque in all 6 of her starts over this trip. Acheron is another who loves to fill a place. Box Up 2.4.5.8.

Race 7 - This is an interesting race and is another one we need to have a crack at as it is wide open, the chances look to be Mepunga Georgia and Double Indemnity both are very smart with a clear run early and they are a must for our First Four. If we add Glaucus at big odds and My Boy Tyler who is a sneaky chance of leading here we should get the money. Box Up 1.4.6.8.

Race 8 - The final of the 2018 SA St Leger and there looks to be 2 main chances in Victa Louise who has won her last 5 starts here and Gawler and Nirimba Pirate who is more than capable with a clear run early. On that note Fabwik and Long Gully Gus can’t be left out of calculations. Box Up 3.6.7.8.

Race 9 - I will continue with the Cameron Butcher theme and I like Jay’s Ace in this out in box 8, he loves the outside draw and is dropping back in distance to the sprint and should be able to possie up into the back. Cairnlea Gump is very smart and is drawn for a bold showing. Box Up 1.5.7.8.

Race 10 - We tipped him last week and he saluted for us and that was Cain Hoy so we will stick with him again despite his draw of 4. Allen Paul and Spring Shirl will be running on and look to be major players. Box Up 3.4.7.8

2018 SA ST LEGER FINAL TONIGHT

Two fantastic semi-finals were conducted last week at Angle Park where greyhounds qualified for tonight’s prestigious SA St Leger final.

The first semi-final was taken out Victa Louise who continued on her winning way leading throughout in impressive fashion. She won in easy fashion by over 4 lengths from Zellman who stuck to his guns well and Nirmiba Pirate who also ran a solid race. Victa Louise ran slick sectionals of 4.39/16.84 with and overall of 29.93. With her blistering speed box 6 tonight should pose no real problems.

The second semi-final was won by Emerley Nolen who ran to the front late in the race and won at big double figure odds by almost 2 lengths in a solid 30.25. Fabwik ran home well for second with Dakota Dawn hanging on for third. Long Gully Gus got going late and snuck into fourth to qualify for tonight’s final. A terrific training performance by Judi Hurley to not only qualify two greyhounds for tonight but also trained the first reserve.

Tonight’s race features some of our most promising young chasers who will hopefully take the next step into open company in the coming months. Good luck to all connections concerned.

The $9,290 St Leger final is listed to jump at 9.07pm (SA time) and is race 8 on the program with full coverage on Sky Racing 1.

RASMUSSEN TEAM PREPARING FOR A BIG FEW WEEKS INTERSTATE

The Tony and Lisa Rasmussen combination will again cross the border to the Garden State and take on the best greyhounds in the country at the Meadows on this Saturday night (17th February).

What a great night it will be at the Meadows with the running of the Group 1 Temlee, Group 1 Zoom Top and Group 1 Rookie Rebel. There will also be five Australian Cup preludes with the Rasmussen team having a strong hand. Nagar Bear will be engaged in the first prelude which will be race 2 no 6 due to be run at 7.08pm (SA time) while Lachlan Monelli is in the third prelude drawing box 4 in race 4 at 7.45pm (SA time). Yesterday the Meadows released a list of 56 greyhounds who were seeded directly into heats of the $550,000 Group 1 Australian Cup – to be held on February 24 with both Hukanui and Honcho Monelli amongst the 56 meaning they have direct passage next week. They will compete in the last race on the program Saturday night  and have drawn boxes 6 and 7 respectively due to be run at 10.37 (SA time). They also have Ashom Monelli engaged in a 600m event and he has drawn perfectly in box 1 in race 11 due to jump at 10.15pm (SA time). We wish them the best of luck over the next few weeks.

LAUNCHING PAD SA SERIES BEGINS ON 21ST FEBRUARY

Again this year the Sandown GRC offered sweepstakes tickets into the rich Launching Pad Series.

There are special conditions on the race being for greyhounds that have won between 1 and 6 races and have not had more than 30 starts at close of nominations. The Heats will be run at Sandown over the 515m on Thursday, 15th March with the Semi-Finals on Thursday, 22nd March and the $150,000 to the winner Final run on Thursday, 29th March.
Greyhound Racing SA was able to secure a ticket and will give one greyhound the opportunity to compete in this lucrative series. We will run a Heat and Final series to determine who will make the Launching Pad Heats on 15th March.
Our Heats will be run on Wednesday, 21st February over the 515m at Angle Park for greyhounds that have won 1-4 races and no more than 28 starts. The Heats will be worth $1,130 and will be Non Penalty events. The Final will be run at Angle Park on Thursday, 1st March over the 515m with prizemoney of $4,540 and will also be Non Penalty.
The winner of the Final will take their spot in the Launching Pad Heats two weeks later, however, if the winner for whatever reason cannot take their spot then the next qualified greyhound will be given that spot.
GRSA has restricted the series to 1-4 wins and 28 starts incase a greyhound wins both the heat and final so this will still keep them eligible. We have also made our final two weeks before the Launching Pad Heats at Sandown to give the trainer an opportunity to get across the border and trial for the big race.
Nominations close with GRSA at 9am tomorrow (Friday, 16th February).

NO TRIALS AT MURRAY BRIDGE THIS WEEKEND DUE TO SWAP MEET

GRSA has been advised that there will be NO trials at Murray Bridge this weekend due to a swap meet at the venue.

ANGLE PARK LIGHTING UPDATE

Last week investigations continued into optimising the section of new LED lighting at Angle Park.
Lighting engineers from Tigerlight have computer modelled various different beam angles and light positions to achieve a better outcome. They have proposed a solution that spreads the beam angle of each light unit, effectively reducing the noticeable crossover when the beams from each light overlap. To implement the new solution, Tigerlight must source the replacement parts from overseas, and then replace the lenses on each of the new lights. Unfortunately this whole process will take approximately 3 weeks. The rectification works will occur around GRSA’s racing and trialling schedule and additional costs will not be incurred as part of the refinement process.
GRSA will endeavour to keep participants informed regarding these works and thanks everyone for their patience as we seek the best possible outcome for the industry.

MOUNT GAMBIER CUP IN MARCH NOW A LISTED EVENT

The Mount Gambier Cup carnival will be run over two weeks and three meetings this year, highlighted by the Mount Gambier Cup Final on Sunday, March 18.

On Friday, 9th March the Club will run Heats of The Produce Store Feature Maiden over 512m, Heats of a Grade 5 over 600m and Heats of the Formula 400 Open over 400m. On Sunday, 11th March the Club will conduct the Mount Gambier Cup Heats worth $1,500 each with 8 terrific Heats anticipated. The Club will be running up to 12 races on each day of the carnival.
The final day of the carnival will not only feature the $22,000 Mount Gambier Cup Final it will also feature all the other Finals on a superb card of racing in the South East of the State.

ANGLE PARK TUESDAY TRIALS TO START AT 6PM FROM 6TH MARCH

From the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting it was determined to start the Angle Park Tuesday night trials from 6pm for a 3 month trial period, this will commence with the first trial session on Tuesday, 6th March

It was believed this would assist with the lateness of bookings and would also provide more flexibility for participants.
Trainers will be able to book as normal online and by phone. GRSA however will support Satisfactory trials, Qualifying trials, Unproven & Proven trials and marking off of greyhounds with a block of 25 minutes around the same time as normal. Trials will start at 6.00pm with the first two blocks until 6.50pm allowing for 20 greyhound trials after this staff will then conduct Satisfactory Trials, Qualifying Trials and mark off greyhounds from 6.50pm to 7.15pm. This also provides an opportunity for GRSA to move the Unproven and Proven greyhound trials earlier in the night (which always used to be the case) where trainers can book into these either online or by phone. Then normal bookings will again commence from 7.15pm.
This will be for a 3 month trial period.

CLAIMING RACES TO BE TRIALLED IN MARCH

After the last Grading Review Panel meeting late last year the panel determined that claiming races would be trialled to see what sort of response this would have from the Industry.
Claiming races are a regular thing in harness racing and was last programmed in greyhound racing a few years ago in NSW. There are specific rules around claiming events but basically greyhounds are graded into an event based on their sale price (ie $2,500). Prior to the event new owners can buy the greyhound before it starts. Any prizemoney won will be retained by the old owners and then the new owners take the greyhound after the race.
These races provide an opportunity to sell and buy greyhounds that are currently competing.
It would be the intention to run a 388m (14th March) and 515m (26th March) claiming event in March. Full terms and conditions will be available on the GRSA website shortly.

GRSA HOT WEATHER POLICY UPDATE

GRSA advises that an updated version of the Hot Weather Policy came into effect last week.
The main changes that participants need to be aware off are:
• All weather forecasts will be sourced from BoM (this used to be Weatherzone)
• The kennel house will be open half an hour earlier for kennelling if the forecast temperature at the corresponding regional centre is 32°C or above
For any questions regarding the policy the please contact GRSA’s Integrity Department. The policy in full can be viewed on the GRSA website.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:
• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)
• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.
• An increase to the average Breeders’ Support Payment by 40% through the introduction of a fixed payment of $100 per pup for litters whelped after January 1, 2018. New claim forms will be sent out with new services lodged from 1st January 2018.
• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA, litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.
• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.
• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018
• Expansion of the Superbonus scheme in line with consultation with the ICG from January 1, 2018. Specific details to be released shortly.

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.

SYNDICATION INTEREST FROM TRAINERS

Greyhound Racing SA is interested in gaining feedback from trainers who would be interested in having their details made available to any prospective syndicate groups. GRSA receives a number of queries from owners about getting involved with their friends, however, it is quite hard for them to find a trainer. Those trainers who are comfortable with this please respond to Shaun Mathieson via email [email protected] or phone (08) 8243 7100. These details would only be made available to syndicate groups.
