TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

With a high quality 10 event programme at headquarters tonight the highlight is the two Heats of the Bargain Steel Centre SA Sprint which are races 7 and 8, we see some of the best sprinters I the state do battle. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events along with the UBET Jackpots including the $10,000 guaranteed Trifecta pool on Race 1.

Race 1 - It’s a tricky event to kick the night off as there looks to be several chances, we will go with the Tyson Bradley trained Motown Kenny who has been in terrific form of late, he has the pace to lead from his awkward draw of 4. Tag and Release should start the punters elect so we can’t leave him out of calculations. Box Up 1.3.4.5.

Race 2 - The Kelly team has a handy one in Click Here, she can be hit and miss on box rise but will be doing her best work late. Add in Marco Lee and Charlie Chops as they both love to fill a place. Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 3 - Another wide-open affair so it makes a great race for our Trifecta and First Four. Hurucan is a shocking beginner but from his inside draw should be able to possie up early and with a bit of luck will take holding out.  Emerley Cosmic is our value runner as he can handle the wide draw. Box Up 3.4.5.8.

Race 4 - For mine Signal Peak looks very hard to beat as he has good early pace. The value will come from the Lauren Harris trained Tullabung Betty down in box 1 as she looks the improver and is knocking on the door. Box Up 1.4.7.8.

Race 5 - I love the 600m events and the winner should come from the Rasmussen kennel in either Zero Knockin’ or Chief Bale, both love this trip and should run the Quinella. Paddy Macs and the pacey Tyla Grace can get us the First Four. Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 6 - Winning form is good form so it’s very hard to go past Farmin who has resumed with 2 strong wins and should only keep on improving. He has moderate beginners around him so he should lead and win. Victa Ollie has a nice draw and a forward showing would be expected. Box Up 1.3.5.7.

Race 7 - This is the first heat of the SA Sprint and unfortunately On Fire has been scratched so lets hope we will see him back in a few weeks. We will put Aston Kody on top now as he is in fine form and is drawn for a strong showing here as is Barton Bale. Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 8 - The second of the SA Sprint heats and this looks a good betting event, we will go with Cairnlea Kenny out in box 7, and he has the pace to be in the top 3 early and should be hard to beat. Hukanui was a big winner here last start in a super slick BON 29.66 and with an ounce of luck early will take a power of beating. Box Up 4.6.7.8.

Race 9 - The Distance affair of the night and Gavin Harris has another strong stayer in his kennels with Springvale Carla, she has won 5 from 15 here along with 4 placings and on recent efforts should prove the measuring stick once again. Acheron and Long Gully Gilly can fill the placings. Box Up 2.4.5.7.

Race 10 - We can go home on a winner with Double Indemnity out in box 7, he has been racing well and loves a wide draw so we will make him our top pick. Zipping Olga has good short course form and will be right in this for a long way. Box Up 1.2.7.8.

BARGAIN STEEL CENTRE SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS TONIGHT

The $4,590 heats of the Bargain Steel Centre SA Sprint Championship are conducted tonight with some of the best local sprinters in the State gathered together.

In the first heat, Group 1 National Sprint placegetter On Fire has been scratched and hopefully make his long awaited return to the race track in a few weeks however he would have had his work cut out first up against the likes of the Ben Rawlings trained Pyredos Monelli and High Eden Frost for Jan Jones all in terrific form. High quality greyhounds Aston Kody, Long Gully Gus and Barton Bale will also look to stake their claim tonight.

In the second heat top local chaser Cairnlea Kenny for Petar Jovanovic will be one of the favourites in an outstanding race with the likes of Snakebite Bale for Ben Rawlings, Purpose Driven for Cameron Butcher and Hukanui for Tony Rasmussen all challenging for favouritism.

The first four from each heat will progress through to next week’s final run on Thursday, 18th January worth $22,000.

The Box Draw will be conducted oncourse tonight after the running of Race 9.

NEW RACE TRACK LIGHTING FOR ANGLE PARK

The lights at Angle Park have been in place for a very long time and are in desperate need of replacing.

The front straight will be done first and for GRSA to do this it is going to take a number of days to be completed resulting in a few Angle Park meetings not being conducted.  Therefore, the Monday night meeting on the 15th January will now be conducted at Strathalbyn with Monday night prizemoney. For the meeting on Wednesday, 17th January the meeting will now be at Gawler during the day.

There will be NO trials at Angle Park on Tuesday night, 16th January due to the work being conducted however GRSA will conduct another trial session at Gawler on Monday, 17th January in the morning.

BREEDER SUPPORT CHANGES

A number of Breeder Support Changes have come into effect from January 1.  The first phase of that framework will commence with the introduction of the following support strategies:

• 100% increase to the breeder component of the SA Bred Scheme from July 1, 2019 (which will impact more recent litters and all future breeding activity)

• The introduction of a subsidy of $30 per week for any retired greyhound on the waiting list to go into GAP that is being kept on a Trainer’s or Owner’s approved premises from January 1, 2018 commencing from the start of the 7th week on the list post-retirement.  Existing arrangements around subsidised boarding will remain unchanged. New placement forms will be available.

• The elimination of fees for natural notice of service, FSI notice of service rebated by GRSA , litter registration and naming from January 1, 2018.

• An increase to the subsidy for DNA testing of breeding females to cover the full cost of (approximately) $180 from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for DNA testing from 1st January 2018.

• A cap on the cost of sire registration of $500 with the remainder being reimbursed by way of subsidy from January 1, 2018. Applications to Greyhounds Australasia for stud dog registration from 1st January 2018

SA BRED MAIDEN PAYMENT - $1,000 IF WHELPED IN 2016

The SA bred maiden payment rewards participants that get a greyhound to the track to win a race. GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017.

This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
