TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight at headquarters we certainly have a mixed bag of racing, the highlights are 3 very good heats over the sprint for SA owned grade 5 runners, they are races 5 to 7 with several smart performers engaged, it makes for good punting. We also have the running of the 2020 Bayroad Queen Final over the 731m race 9 that carries a $5,000 winning cheque with only the 4 runners, Sir Truculent will start a very short price favourite.

Race 1 - We will go with the newcomer in Sprite Monelli in the Ben Rawlings kennel, he has won 7 of 34 along with 13 placings. He has handy short course form in WA and looks a chance here on debut. Cairnlea Ebony is very smart when on song and is the big danger, add Rev Fred Sloy who is well drawn. Box Up 1.2.5.6

Race 2 - The main chances in this look to be Cawbourne Coco and Juliet Echo, both have early speed when on song and they love an inside draw which they have tonight, add Chief Sebon and Top Right as our value runner and we should go close in our First Four. Box up 1.2.5.6

Race 3 - This is the first of two 600m events on the programme and we will go with Couture, he was a 1st up winner here over the sprint then had to overcome early trouble here last start over this trip when 3rd behind Double By Design, he gets his chance in this. Five Thirty will be running on late along with Toora Ziggy who looks the likely leader. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 4 - Double By Design is racing in terrific form with 3 wins from his last 5 starts he is very strong and is drawn for a bold showing. Canya Chase is very smart when on the lure if he is able to lead he wins but in recent runs he has been missing the start. Ask Me Now was a terrific winner in heavy conditions here last week over the sprint and is capable of running a cheeky race. Box Up 1.4.6.8

Race 5 - Little Earner is resuming from an unplaced run back in January, she has been well travelled recently and is very classy when able to lead. Holy Reign has won her last 4 all in good fashion and is drawn for a forward showing once again. Chief’s Sidekick didn’t handle the conditions here last week and is a lot better than his recent run a win wouldn’t surprise. Box Up 1.2.3.4

Race 6 - Veteran trainer Barry Stewart certainly has Fantastic Reef racing well, he has won 4 of his past 5 and has a perfect record at this venue of 5 from 5, he loves this draw and is our top pick. Aston Opal is another who is in form with 4 wins on the trot, he has early pace and is a chance of pinching this if there was early trouble. Box up 1.3.5.8

Race 7 - I like one in this at Each Way odds Irapsag Miss, she has a good turn of early pace and with moderate beginners on her inside she is a big chance of leading and pinching this. Blister is a handy type and should start the punters elect. Fantastic Pippa is racing well and is a must for the Trifecta. Box Up 3.4.5.6

Race 8 - We can’t go past  the inform It’s A Riot in this, he is all class and from his wide draw tonight should take a power of beating and make it 4 on end. Spring Vinnie is well drawn and is very strong, he is a must for our Trifecta. American Man and Danyo’s Charlie for the First Four. Box Up 2.4.7.8

Race 9 - This is the Distance final and with $5,000 to the winner it is a very handy race to win, Sir Truculent is an out and out stayer, he craved the very heavy conditions here last week and went on to win by over 11 lengths. Wally Harkins has him flying and he looks far too strong again in this. My Boy Bean will be there late as will McLaren Dazzler. 3 from 1.5.7

Race 10 - Fantastic Flame gets her chance tonight, she found a heap of trouble in the run here last start  back in March, should be nice a fresh and is our top pick. Christopher Rose is our value runner, he has been placed here at his last 3 and can figure again. Box Up 2.3.7.8

Race 11 - The Cameron Butcher sprinter Yarindale can send us home in front, he has won his past 4 all in good fashion and should lead and win again. Lose Your Blues gets back early in her races, from box 1 tonight she gets a chance to be a little closer early and is normally very strong, add Tyson’s Choice who can add big value to our Trifecta. Box Up 1.2.5.8

LOCAL NEWS

2020 BAYROAD QUEEN STAYERS FINAL TONIGHT

With only one heat of the 2020 Bayroad Queen Stayers Cup last week we only have 4 eligible greyhounds competing in tonight’s $8,000 final.

Whilst it’s a small field I’m sure like most of our stayers events it will be a great spectacle, good luck to all competitors.

The Stayer’s Cup was initiated 14 years ago and this is the third year it has been named the Bayroad Queen Stayer’s Cup in recognition of one of the State’s best stayers. Bayroad Queen competed in the early 80’s and in 1982 she won the National Distance Final breaking a 13 year dominance of NSW and Victoria. She also won the equivalent of the Association Cup at Harold Park and Sandown Cup at Olympic Park and was named the SA Greyhound of the Year. She broke the Angle Park track record on two occasions inside a month and at the peak of her powers she was considered the best stayer in the country

RACING RETURNS TO GAWLER ON FRIDAYS AND NOW TUESADAYS FROM NEXT WEEK

With racing already returned to Fridays at Gawler next Tuesday 12th May will see the normal program also return to have Gawler back racing two times a week.

All trainers, handlers and essential staff should still be aware of the social distancing regulations continuing and that entry will only be permitted from Gate 1. This is at the Eastern end of the precinct (dirt entrance), all other gates will be locked. Please liaise with the stewards if you intent to leave the venue and then come back during the meeting. No patrons are allowed on oncourse or catering services in keeping with COVID – 19 restrictions and any non-essential person on these premises will be asked to leave immediately.

Separately the Gawler Club has advised that the Show Society has cancelled the Gawler Show for 2020 which normally affects racing at the venue.

2020 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON – NOMINATIONS CLOSE TOMORROW

The major race for Breeders 2020 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run next Wednesday, 13th May with nominations closing tomorrow with GRSA.

These will be followed by the semi-finals on May 21st and the $37,500 final on May 28th. Total prizemoney for heats and semis will be determined by the number of races run.

The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2020. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.

Noting the current quarantining in place for the Mt Gambier region, those connections of paid up greyhounds will have the opportunity to compete in the series.

• Nominations for the heats close on tomorrow (Friday, 8th May) with GRSA at 9.00am

2020 MURRAY BRIDGE STRAIGHT TRACK CUP IN MAY

GRSA advises that the inaugural Murray Bridge Straight Track Cup Final will be run on Wednesday, 27th May 2020 worth $10,000 over the 350m.

The $965 Heats will be conducted on Wednesday, 20th May

• Nominations for the heats close on Friday, 15th May with GRSA at 9.00am

SHANE MCQUEEN HEATS IN LATE MAY

The main 600m feature at Angle Park comes up on Thursday, 28th May with the running of the $5,120 heats of the Shane McQueen.

This series has always been well supported by the Industry with three or four heats normally run. The Final will be held on Thursday, 4th June and will be worth $11,435.

• Nominations for the heats close on Monday, 25th May with GRSA at 9.00am.

CHANGES TO NOMINATION CLOSING TIMES
Based on items discussed and approved at the most recent Industry Consultative Group, GRSA has changed some of the days of closing of nominations to aid participants which trial the night before they nominate.

This will hopefully increase our numbers for race meetings resulting in less extension of nominations. Moving the nominations closer to the race date may have implications for the sa.thedogs form analyst releasing as quick as normal.

Below is the table based on a normal week of racing in SA with changes highlighted -

Nominations close 9am on Monday – Angle Park Thursday (no change)

– Mt Gambier Thursday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Tuesday – Gawler Friday (moves from Monday)

                                                 - Mt Gambier Sunday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Wednesday – Murray Bridge Sunday (moves from Tuesday)

Nominations close 9am on Thursday – Angle Park Monday (moves from Wednesday)

-   Gawler Tuesday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Friday – Angle Park or Murray Bridge Straight Track (no change)

ADMINISTRATION TIME CHANGES FROM THIS WEEK

As part of the changes previously advised by GRSA during the COVID-19 pandemic, GRSA have altered their Administration Business hours.

Normal Business hours would be  8.30am to 4.30pm, however, from Monday, 4th May these have varied to 8.30am to 3.30pm during this period.  This change is part of GRSA’s strategy to reduce costs where it can; in order to help alleviate the downturn in business income.

This will have an effect on scratching closing times and trials being booked. Both will now close at 3pm when they would have normally closed at 4.00pm.

Access to the Office and Telephone calls will only be available up until 3.30pm from Monday to Friday.

This will also have some implications on race books with the change in nomination times and early closing of the office there will only be a one page per race book provided which will also save on costs during this period. All information is still available on the GRSA website.

Due to the reduction in office hours participants need to be mindful when lodging paperwork that the processing time may take longer.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.

SCRATCHINGS FOR THOSE MEETINGS THAT CLOSED 4PM THE DAY BEFORE WILL NOW BE 3PM

As advised above trainers please note that scratching’s for ALL meetings that would have closed at 4pm the day before will now close at 3pm the day before.

MURRAY BRIDGE TRIALS

GRSA advise that from March there will no longer be an officiating staff available to clear greyhounds for Satisfactory trials and Qualifying Qualy trials on the fortnightly Tuesday nights at Murray Bridge.

GRSA will send an official to Murray Bridge on a monthly basis on a Friday morning trial session, which has both tracks trialling. This presents an opportunity to also include the Straight Track for Qualifying and Satisfactory Trials. The next trial session will be Friday, 15th May

NON ESSENTIAL PERSONS ONCOURSE AT RACE MEETINGS

GRSA reminds participants with children that due to the COVID-19 restrictions non essential persons and the public are not allowed oncourse which includes children.

Unfortunately during school holidays this can be difficult for some of our participants to manage however they need to make other arrangements for them.

GRSA appreciates the significant changes in place for the industry during this time and appreciates the efforts that are being made and continue to be made to abide due social distancing and restrictions.
