TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Well the time has come for us to have an incredible night on the punt and collect the chocolates.  There are a couple of handy races on the programme none better than race 5 which is over the 600m, the Easter Cup, there is a mix of speed and strength in this event and it is certainly one for the trifecta and first 4 punters. Races 6, 7and 8 are all very strong on paper so it makes for an interesting night. Make sure you all have a safe long weekend Happy Easter.

Race 1 and we kick off with a very open affair and I will go with value in the ultra-consistent Banker Bale.  He is very strong and rarely misses a place.  Sunday Shoes is in form and is a must for the trifecta, add in Liam’s Entity who will improve.  Box Up 1.2.4.7.

Race 2 and we have to venture out to Allen Kentucky for the Rasmussen kennel in box 8.  He has early speed and wasn’t disgraced when 2nd here last week.  Play Your Ace is perfectly drawn down in box 1 and should be right in the mix along with Awesome Nemo who has been racing well in recent weeks.  Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 3 and I’m looking for early pace in this and we will go with Tinker Bell in the tricky squeeze box of 5.  She hasn’t missed a cheque in her last 5 runs here and only needs an ounce of luck to be right in the finish.  Kilter Bale is always a chance and is another who is picking up money for the kennel, add in Manhattan Cry for the trifecta.  Box Up 2.3.5.7.

The 4th and this appears a two dog race with Cash In Looper and Regal Looper.  Both are main chances and both have very ordinary draws.  Excusez Moi could be our each way chance of the night as she can kick up early and pinch this.  Box Up 2.4.5.6.

How good is this event, Race 5 over the 600m, the 8 runners all have a chance and on their night are capable of carving out quick times.  It’s still hard to go past the early pace even though it’s over the 600m and the two quicks are Gun McBain and Disaaci, so they are a must for the First 4.  One at odds is Dyna Quote who will be rattling home late.  Add in Zana Bale who can crack the 35 sec barrier and we have our First 4.  Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 6 and the Ex Tassie performer in Kalispell saluted here Monday night in 29.80 from box 2 and on that effort looks very hard to beat again.  The BIG danger is Dodger I Am in box 4 as he will be winding up late and is very smart.  Zipping Spice has pace out wide and should finish in the top 3.  Box Up 2.3.4.8.

Caustic Bale was very impressive here last week on his debut and carved out a slick 29.56 from box 5 after missing the kick.  On that run he can only improve and will prove very hard to beat again. Coorong Kid keeps on winning in quick times and has been boxing well so is a huge chance for the minors.  We can add in Fusaichi Kahn and Valladares.  Box Up 1.2.3.6.

Race 8 and this is the 2016 Breeders Prelude (1) and what a terrific one at that.  I can’t go past Team Roper who is in outstanding form with 4 wins on the trot here at this venue.  Menzel Boys is another who has pace and should be right in the mix.  Box Up 2.5.6.7.

The Distance affair is race 9 and a very small field of 4, Luna Jinx will start a VERY Short priced favourite and couldn’t get beat if all is well.  Mija Returns to run 2nd so for $1.00 outlay in order 8.5.3.

Race 10 and this is an interesting race and I will tip the youngster in Mauricio who has a 100% winning record from his two starts both at this venue.  He has the pace and is boxed for a forward showing once again.  Buhin Bale is well drawn and is one for the trifecta.  Box Up 1.2.4.6.

The final event is race 11 and the Harnas kennel can have a happy Easter if Relton salutes.  He can be hit and miss early but is very smart with a bit of luck.  The dangers will come from Nissan Bale and a likely improver at huge odds Velocity Tina.  Box Up 1.3.6.8

HUKANUI IN GROUP 2 LAUNCHING PAD FINAL TONIGHT AT SANDOWN

Hukanui might be the rank outsider in tonight’s $200,000 group 2 Launching Pad final, but the dog is no stranger beating the odds. The $51 chance is trained by Tony Rasmussen and was purchased for just $1000 as an 11 month old pup.

Tony said “Steve Collins broke him in but he took a while to get going. “By the time he came back to the kennel the reports weren’t very positive, but we decided to persevere. We took him to Strathalbyn for a trial and he went terribly. No one part of the trial – every part of it. Just terrible. We took him to Angle Park and he went terribly again. My daughter loves him and he’s a great dog at home so I kept working with him but kept going terribly. Then, after about eight trials, it just clicked. And it clicked in a big way. On his race debut Hukanui won by more than 12 lengths breaking 30 seconds for the Angle Park 515m trip. He railed beautifully, he’s a really hard chasing dog and very strong. His future is as a stayer, but I don’t like stepping them up until they’re 2 and half (Hukanui turned 2 February). We’ll be patient with him and step him up when he’s ready.”

Before embarking on a career in the staying ranks, the son of Kelsos Fusileer (the same sire as retired champion Fernando Bale) has tonight’s Launching Pad to negotiate. A $501 chance before the heats, his progress to the final came as no surprise to Tony. “I had a little bet on him before the heats. My mate suggested I take him across for the series since he’d only won six races. I said ‘do you think he’s good enough,’ and he thought he was. I figured he’d already paid his way so I thought why not have a crack. I took him across to Sandown to trial after the last race one Sunday afternoon and he ran 29.40 and got home in 10.29 which is absolutely flying. We bought a ticket and here we are.”

Hukanui has shown glimpses of that brilliance during the series, however his Launching Pad campaign almost ended at box rise in his heat. Jumping from box six, Hukanui found immediate trouble and was checked again at the first turn before gathering himself and storming home to run second. The effort took its toll.

“He pulled up a little sore and I nearly had to scratch him from the semi finals. We got him right but he hadn’t done any work during the week, so he was a little underdone. I was really happy he got through the semi final (after running second to Dream Edition). He’s good as gold now and has had a much more normal week so I think he’ll improve again. He’s done amazingly well to get this far so hopefully he’s on the way to something special.”

Hukanui is engaged in race 8 box 5 due to start at 9.09pm SA time and we wish Tony, the connections and Hukanui the best of luck.

Also tonight at Sandown the Cameron Butcher trained She’s A Looper will be one of the favourites in race 11 after drawing box 1 in a Grade 5 event. She has super early pace and is in terrific form. He race will be run at 10.15pm SA time. SA Owned Jack Walker trained by Jason Thompson also backs up again tonight in the Launching Pad Consolation drawing box 7 in race 5 due to start at 8.06pm SA time.

CHANGES TO PATHWAY RACING TIME STANDARDS

The GRSA Racing Department wishes to advise of the following changes to Pathway Racing time standards, which will take effect from Friday 1st April, 2016:

The methodology for establishing the Pathway Racing time standards is based on the average winning time in Grade 5 & 6 events at each track/distance. Following a request for an immediate review of these times (particularly at Mt Gambier), it was established that the information displayed on the GRSA website relating to average winning times was incorrect.

As such, over the past week the Racing Department has collated the correct information and has amended the Pathway Racing time standards accordingly. A further review of the Pathway Racing concept will occur at the end of the 6-month trial in early July.

Participants wishing to provide feedback on Pathway Racing are urged to forward comments to GRSA via email, post or through the GRSA closed Facebook page.
