TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

We have two heats of the 2020 SA National Sprint Championship tonight here at headquarters (races 5 and 6) on the programme, the final will be held here next week and is sure to be a cracker. Other highlights on the card is a very strong 600m event race 9 and 5 runners over the 731m race 10. All races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Congratulations to Sir Truculent on his terrific win at the Meadows on Saturday Night over the 600!

Race 1 - Lets kick start the night with Spring Burner down in box two, he won here 3 starts back from an inside draw in 30.19 and looks the measuring stick in this. Long Gully Wilma has been in terrific form over the short at Gawler, he is our value runner for the Trifecta. Sentinel McLaren is very smart and can’t be overlooked. Box Up 2.3.4.8

Race 2 - This is the Maiden of the night and Two Hands George made good ground here last week when 2nd behind Go Go Dolly in 30.16, he will only be improved by the outing and is amongst the main chances. Jacks Well is making his debut and is from the powerful Cameron Butcher kennel so must be kept safe, add Banjo Riley and Butter Up Again for the First Four. Box Up 2.4.6.8

Race 3 - Go Go Dolly was impressive winning here last week leading all the way in 30.16, she has a good turn of early pace so we will make her our top selection. Adios McLaren is better than his last two suggest and is a big chance at handy odds he will be running on strongly. Box Up 4.5.7.8

Race 4 - Dakota Roxy is a class act on her night, she won here two runs back in 29.87 leading throughout, she looks one of the better bets of the night. Coorong Dasher and Spring Blue are very strong and are worth putting in our trifecta. Box up 1.3.4.7

Race 5 - This is the 1st of the heats of the SA National Sprint Championship and we will go with Long Gully Barny who was very impressive when winning here last start in 29.88, he looks the leader and should prove hard to beat. It’s A Riot is a strong type and is well drawn, he has had a freshen up since his last start 3rd here and a win wouldn’t surprise, add Major Major who is a smart type with early luck. Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 6 - The 2nd of the heats and Shadow Mist found a heap of trouble here last start when 3.25L 3rd behind Long Gully Barny, he won his previous 4 here all in outstanding fashion and should prove far too smart in this. Axel Footluce and Blister can figure in the minors on their recent form. Box Up 1.2.4.5

Race 7 - This is a wide open affair with a heap of chances, I like one at handy odds in I’m Top Girl down in box 1, she ran 2nd from this draw three runs back and will be right in the finish. Sweet Rose has been racing well from inside draws, she has early speed and should start the punters elect. All Out Crazy and Jervois Boy for our First Four. Box up 1.4.5.7

Race 8 - Fantastic Pippa romped in here last start when leading throughout for a slick 29.78 win from box 2 by over 7L, she is racing well and is our top pick. Hot Zorro has won 3 of his last 5 and should be able to kick up and run a cheeky race. Lektra Theory is a chance for the minors at handy odds. Box up 2.5.6.7

Race 9 - This is the 600m event of the night and we will stick with the inform Defy from the Troy Murray kennel, he has been in outstanding form with 5 wins on the trot, he won in great fashion over the sprint here last week coming from the rear of the field and still ran 30.10. West On Bamboo flew late to run 2nd here last start and can figure in the placings once again along with Major Havoc. Box Up 1.5.7.8

Race 10 - With only the four runners over the distance No Surrender gets his chance tonight, he scouts wide in his races so he should have plenty of room to move. Boom Down is the danger as he hugs the fence and is racing well and looks the leader. Dashing Mickey and Five Thirty in order for the First Four. 3.1.5.7 for $1

Race 11 - Ashby Mayhem found a heap of trouble here last start when unplaced in a lot tougher company, she drops back in grade tonight and should improve. Spring Cuervo is well drawn and was an eye catching run here last start when 5th behind Maddie Me, he was storming home and is my pick at each way odds, add Cawbourne Clancy and Spring Cobra for the minors. Box Up 1.2.3.6

LOCAL NEWS

2020 SA NATIONAL STATE SPRINT HEATS TONIGHT

Tonight we see the running of the SA Sprint heats for the 2020 SA Nationals Series. There are 2 Heats of the Sprint Series being races 5 and 6 tonight at headquarters.

In the Sprint Series, the main chances look to be It’s A Riot and Long Gully Barny from heat 1 while in heat 2 Shadow Mist does battle with Axel Footluce. The first four from each heat will qualify for next weeks State Final in what looks a high quality series. For the Stayers series there will be a Best 8 only next Thursday night, 13th August due to staying numbers locally. This will be the same for most of the other States.

The box draws for the SA National Sprint Final will be conducted on track tonight, following the Heats and will be conducted after race 7.

Sky Racing will also support this series with ALL States conducting their Finals on the same night to be run within a 2 hour period. It makes for a great promotional concept.

GRADING REVIEW PANEL MAIN OUTCOMES FROM MEETING

MASTERS EVENTS (GRADE 5 AND MIXED) -  For City A, City B and Prov 1 Masters events the greyhounds 4yo and older will be selected on form with the greyhounds between 4 and 3 ¾ still on age. For Masters events conducted at Prov 2 meetings ALL greyhounds will be selected on age.

For the main Masters races which we normally run at the Angle Park Monday and Gawler Friday meetings, these will be on form for 4yo and older and for Gawler Tuesday and Angle Park Wednesday meetings it will be on age.  All other conditions still remain like time standards etc.

Effective from nominations closing on Monday, 20th July 2020.

MAIDENS - if there are not 6 or more Maidens nominated, then the race should not be conducted unless specifically needed to make up a program.

Effective from nominations closing on Monday, 20th July 2020.

HEATS TO FINALS - Where there are insufficient nominations to run Heats of an advertised event (less than 10 nominations normal events, middle distance and staying events), the event will be conducted as a one-off Final on the date when the Heats were scheduled. If the event is considered a feature event like the Stayers Cup for example or a memorial race, the one-off Final will be conducted on the date of the original Final and a normal graded event conducted at the Heat meeting.

Effective from nominations closing on Monday, 20th July 2020.

TIME GRADING

All Time Grading for all clubs in SA to be uniform with groupings (Maiden/1-4 wins/5+ wins).

For Time Grading events when there are two or more races, then the lowest rating time dogs (the fastest dogs for this grouping) are declared the reserves.

If a greyhound is a reserve for a Time Grading event and does not gain a start then they will automatically get a start in the next Time Graded meeting (no matter the track) so long as they are nominated.

Effective from nominations closing on Monday, 20th July 2020.

REMOTE TRAINERS FEE TO ASSIST MOUNT GAMBIER MEETING

With continuing border restrictions affecting participation in the South East due to COVID-19, GRSA have decided to support the Mount Gambier meeting knowing the importance to be racing on a weekly basis during this time.

For those Trainers that live more than 150 kilometres from Mount Gambier and travel to this meeting they will receive an additional $75 payment to their normal Trainers Fee. The fee will be capped at one payment per registered premises and will continue until the borders are open.

2020 MOUNT GAMBIER CARNIVAL TO BE RUN IN AUGUST

The Mount Gambier Cup Carnival has been rescheduled to August, highlighted by the 2020 Bourne Kennels Mount Gambier Cup Final to be run on Sunday 30th August. The Cup is a Group Listed event and will carry $14,275 in total prizemoney ($10,000 to the winner).

The Bourne Kennels Mount Gambier Cup heats will be held on Sunday 23rd August and are open to the best 64 greyhounds nominated (plus reserves). On the same program, the Club will conduct heats of The Produce Store Feature Maiden over 512m.

To support the Bourne Kennels Mount Gambier Cup Final, the event will feature a Consolation Final for greyhounds that competed in the heats (trainers will need to renominate for this event). Other races on the program will include The Produce Store Maiden Final, a Formula 400 Open Feature over 400m and The Tankman 600 Open Feature over 600m.

Nominations for the heats close with GRSA at 9.00am on Tuesday 18th August

Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA), in consultation with the Mt Gambier Greyhound Racing Club, felt it was important to ensure the Cup Carnival was held following its postponement in March due to COVID-19 pandemic. With recent Government announcements confirming longer term restrictions for Victorians entering South Australia, GRSA believed it was the right time to provide clarity and certainty to local participants regarding the 2020 Cup Carnival.

Whilst we had hoped our valued interstate trainers could attend the Carnival, GRSA will only accept nominations from locally trained greyhounds. For clarity, this does not prevent an interstate greyhound being transferred into an SA kennel to target specific feature races.

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE HEATS IN AUGUST

Again this year GRSA will conduct the Kings and Queens Feature series with Heats on Thursday, 27th August and a $6,430 Final on Thursday, 3rd September in continued support of any greyhound affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics change a few years ago.

The eligibility for this series is for dogs and bitches whelped between 1st March 2018 and 31st May 2018.

Performed Maidens are eligible (raced or qualy trialled).

It will be dependent upon nominations, however, we would like to run a dogs Heat and a bitches Heat separately with greyhounds qualifying into the Final. If there are not sufficient nominations for either sex then these Heats may be mixed into a couple of mixed Heats. Special conditions apply, however, these races will be non-penalty.

• Nominations close Monday, 24th August at 9.00am with GRSA.

GAWLER CLASSIC 2020 (SHORT COURSE) IN LATE AUGUST

The Heats of the 2020 Gawler Classic (Short Course – 400m) will be run on Friday, 28th August.  These Heats are for SA Bred greyhounds which have been paid up for Classic 2020.  The $3,000 Final will be run on Friday, 4th September.

• Nominations for the Heats close at 9am on Tuesday, 25th August.
