Telling the Tale

By the Shadow

Well tonight’s racing is certainly one for all enthusiasts as it’s NATIONALS TIME that means we will get to watch the cream of South Australia’s greyhounds try and win their way through to next week’s state final, and hopefully go on and represent the state at Wentworth Park at the end of August.  The heats kick off with two very good distance events, races 2 and 3 on the card.  Then we have 3 exciting heats of the sprint, races 5 to 7.

Race 1 and there are a few hit and miss beginners in this so I will go with Monday night’s winner in Coolabah Jet.  She pinged the lids and went on to win in a BON 29.81.  Trevor Jessup has her in good form so she looks hard to beat.  Add in Breaker Kahn who will be running on along with Antonio Tyson.  Box Up 1.4.6.8

Race 2 the 1st of the Distance events and we see the return of Token McLaren.  He hasn’t raced since October last year when unplaced but he did trial well here over the sprint and should be right in this if anywhere near his best.  Grifter Bale is racing well and flew home over the sprint two starts back and looks well boxed out in the 8.  They are the main two.  Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 3 the 2nd of the National Distance and Luna Jinx makes a return from injury, she was in fine form prior and is sure to be fit and ready to fire over the journey. Psychotic Gold has been off the scene for several months but trialled over the 600m in a slick 35.14 and she is another who will prove hard to beat.  Box up 2.3.4.7

Race 4, well we tipped her last week and that was Yiche.  She didn’t show her usual dash out of the lids and had to be content with a 3rd behind Van Carrho Flash. Tonight she can bounce back despite the poor draw so we will make her our top pick.  Add in Dyna Andy for value and Genghis Kahn who will be rattling home late.  Box Up 1.3.4.8

The 5th and the first of the National Sprint heats, it looks a very even affair but if Aston Wingard leads from box 3 he would prove hard to beat.  Wild Soul is well drawn down in box 1 and is more than capable when on song.  Add in the pacey Emerley Senorita and Mobius.  Box Up 1.3.7.8

The 6th and the second heat of the Sprint and the Murray camp has a strong representation in this with the 2 and the 3.  Both are more than capable when on the lure so they are a must for the trifecta punters.  It is still hard to go past Young Gun McBain who is boxed too win out in the 8.  Box Up 1.2.4.8

The 7th and heat 3 of the National Sprint.  There are two very smart performers in this and several who are more than capable if the running went their way. The smart ones are It’s Classified and Sunday Shoes, ironically they were both unplaced here last week when short priced favourites!!  So I will still put them in the top 3 but they are beatable.  Box up 2.3.6.8

Race 8 and this is a very good race as there are several last start winners, 5 in fact, so they are all on song and it will be a charge to the first turn.  I am going with the Lauren Harris trained sprinter in Valladares, he resumed here in SA last week and made short work of them with a 29.83 win.  He is quick early and looks well drawn.  Peejay Jack is always a chance along with Barnes Bay who continues to fill a place.  Box up 2.4.6.8.

Race 9 and this is the 600m event of the night and Mcray appears well drawn down in box 1.  The Murray trained chaser has been missing the kick of late and has been doing his best work over the last 100m over the sprint so the extra distance should suit.  Oran Bale is another who should be right in this and has a terrific record of 3 from 4.  Box Up 1.2.4.6

Race 10 and as mentioned before the Trevor Jessup kennel has a couple of handy ones at the moment and Scarp Missile can bring up a double for the team.  She has been runner up here in her past couple, both from box 8 and let’s hope the rails draw will be the factor.  Box Up 1.2.3.8

The final event is race 11 on a terrific night of racing, we can go home on a winner with Aston Eclipse.  He pinged the lids in the Champion Puppy Final and held on to beat a classy field in 30.00 from this draw.  Add in Lady Xanthe and the ultra-consistent Dancing Brett.  Box Up 1.4.5.8

2015 GREYHOUND AUCTION – NOMINATIONS RELEASED

The Greyhound Auction nominations have now been released and are available online and from GRSA. We will be sending forms to registered breeders in particular those who had pups whelp between 1st November 2014 and 31st May 2015, breeders in Victoria and those participants that nominated a greyhound in last years Auction. The nominations close at the end of next month (28th August 2015). The Auction will be held on Sunday 25th October beginning at 12.00 noon at Greyhound Racing SA.

TRIAL BOOKINGS FOR RACE MEETINGS TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY CHANGED

After strong participant feedback to aid trainers, trial bookings on race days at Gawler Tuesday and Angle Park Wednesday will now be taken between 4.00pm and 4.30pm the day before starting this week. The feedback was that there was very limited time to book a trial on the morning of the meetings and make kenneling time where trainers were in transit and hopeful they met the criteria for a trial.

2015 LADBROKES NATIONAL SPRINT AND DISTANCE SA HEATS

Tonight will see the running of the SA State Heats of the Ladbrokes National Sprint Championship and the Ladbrokes National Distance Championship. We have three Sprint heats and two Distance heats on tonight’s program. Twenty greyhounds remained at box draw time for the Sprint and thirteen for the Distance.

In the Sprint heats there looks to be plenty of depth and with only the first two from each heat and the two fastest thirds qualifying for the final the racing will be tight and competitive. Its hard to pick out the main chances as really anything could win their heat so here goes -

In the first heat (Race 5 – 8.09pm SA time) Kim Johnstone will be hoping Wild Soul will be back to his very best form from box 1. The reigning Greyhound of the Year won this series last year and represented SA in Perth and Kim will be hoping for a repeat performance. This race throws up a lot of interest with Aston Wingard, Emerley Senorita and Margaret Keeping possessing high speed and then we have Lochinvar Akira and the highly talented Mobius capable of running home in brilliant sectionals. Turning for home it wouldn’t be surprising to see 8 greyhounds streamed across the track in the run to the finishing line.

The second heat (Race 6 – 8.28pm SA time) looks an absolute cracker on paper despite there being only 6 runners. Real Flash has had a massive boom on her since she won the Group 2 WA Oaks and after a freshen up she could be ready to take the next step to Group 1 level. Her challengers will come thick and fast with Young Gun McBain shooting for 5 straight and Aston Kane getting back to something like his best that saw him win 14 of 15 starts earlier in the year.

The third heat (Race 7 – 8.52pm) could be seen as a match up between the old and the new with outstanding sprinter Kalden Gambino who is in the veteran class but still running brilliant time taking on It’s Classified who with only 5 lifetime starts to his name is the least experienced in the series but has run an exceptional 29.53 three runs ago. Having said that Alderley Reform a few months ago was rated the best sprinter in SA and with his powerful finishing burst could be the blow out despite drawing off the track in the pink.

The Distance heats are races 2 (7.05pm SA time) and 3 (7.25pm SA time) on tonights program and should also provide some exciting chasing. The first four from each heat will go into next weeks final.

Token McLaren for master trainer Don Foster returns to the track after 8 months off due to injury and it will be an exceptional piece of training if Token McLaren can qualify let alone win the first heat. He represented SA at the Nationals 12 months ago in Perth and what a fairy tale it would be if he could return to the big stage at 4 ½ years of age. He put the writing on the wall with a nice trial over the 515m in 30.12 however he is meeting some very stiff competition tonight. Grifter Bale for Ben Rawlings has been one of our best stayers in 2015 and looks very hard to beat from box 8 with his exceptional high speed. Both Zipping Bart for Jarrod Murray and Springvale Clint for Gavin Harris fought out the Stayers Cup Final last month at headquarters with Springvale Clint gaining the upper hand on the line and tonight they will again be right in the mix.

In the second heat Placid Planet for Ben Rawlings has taken all before him winning his last 5 starts with the last two in blistering times over the 731m. He looks a greyhound on the rise and looks very hard to beat however he takes on two of SA’s best stayers of recent times. Group 1 winning stayer Luna Jinx for trainer Gavin Harris returns to SA after running second in a heat of the Super Stayers in Queensland. She was one of the favourites for the final however was scratched due to injury. That was almost 2 months ago so whatever she does tonight she will improve on next week if she can make the final. Psychotic Gold for Petar Jovanovic also has a terrific record and returns after almost 2 ½ months of the race track. Her record over the 731m is outstanding with 15 wins and 10 placings from 30 starts and topped her preparation off with a solid 35.14, 600m trial last week.

Next week’s SA State Finals will carry prizemoney of $8,565 for the Sprint and $9,140 for the Distance due to GRSA’s commitment to paying unplaced money in staying events. The winners share will be $6,000 for each race, plus there is a travel support payment. The box draws for the finals will take place on track tonight. The Sprint final after race eight and the Distance final after race four.

The National finals will both be run at the Wentworth Park in New South Wales on Saturday 22nd August. Each of the Group 1 finals has a winner’s cheque of $75,000.

METRES PER SECOND ON THE SEMAPHORE BOARD

Recently GRSA was queried as to why the metres per second figure displayed on the Semaphore Board at Angle Park were incorrect. This was confirmed that it wasn’t separating each distance however after a new chip had been replaced for the Semaphore Board this (M/S) time is now accurately calculated.

UPDATED BREEDING RULES FROM 1ST JULY

From the 1st July there will be new breeding rules in place regarding the Registration of a Breeding Female, reporting of Litters and Breeding Restrictions. The Breeding Female is to do with registering your bitch for a Pink Card before you breed from her. She needs to be DNA tested and registered before she can breed. The changes to rules make it clear that all paperwork and processes have to be completed before she can be inseminated. Please update yourself with the new conditions in kennel capers, on the GRSA website or contact GRSA Animal Welfare Officer Belinda Pearce.

RACING IN QUEENSLAND

If you are intending to race in Queensland there will be a requirement for interstate trainers to sign a Statutory Declaration prior to nominating a greyhound from 1 July 2015.

Racing Queensland has advised that people are at liberty to submit alternative declarations for consideration by RQ. These forms are available from GRSA and will be available on the GRSA website for participants shortly. Please contact me for any assistance if traveling to Queensland.

6)         Trials will be 515m & 531m in distance as first preference. Other distances considered depending on nominations.
7)         Greyhounds currently under suspension or not cleared to race are not eligible to be nominated.(these trials are conducted as if they are at a race meeting so all greyhounds need to be eligible at nomination time)
8)         Greyhound registration certificate or cards must be produced at kennelling time.
9)         Trainers with other greyhounds engaged can utilize the extra kennel space until such time they are ready to leave OR trainers with no other greyhounds will be free to leave following their trial.

Please Note
Kennelling times will be 15 minutes earlier for these meetings from 4th May to allow for these trials.

·         If there are 12 races at Angle Park or Gawler there will be NO trials.

·         The Vet Clinic at these meetings cannot be used to accommodate any greyhounds to allow for extra trialling greyhounds. This policy has been introduced so that participants book in under the policy. The Vet Clinic needs to be available for the Vet and Stewards at race meetings

Exceptions to this Policy–

·         Thursday nights are kept available for the option for Interstate greyhounds to solo trial in a lead up to our Group races and also local greyhound’s trialling for Group racing interstate.

·         Local greyhounds will be allowed to solo trial in a lead up to a feature race upon request and they will take one of the eight kennels available for trialling ahead of the policy and sit separately to the 4 dog trials. Feature races are considered to be – Adelaide Cup, Gawler Cup, Oaks, Derby, Howard Ashton, Brian Johnstone, SA Sprint, SA Distance Championship, SA Anniversary Cup, SA Country Cup, National Finals & any Group race Interstate.

·         Local greyhounds will be allowed to trial on a race night, where they are in preparation for a feature event and nominated for a meeting and the race does not stand up. This will include all distances and also take precedence over the policy.

·         If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires a trial in between this will be conducted as a solo trial and sit separately to the 2 four dog trials.

Whilst these changes increase the time between kennelling and the first race by 15 minutes it should provide an opportunity for more trialling opportunities for one and two dog trainers in particular.

It is extremely important that trainers book in to trial at these race meetings. No trials will be accepted outside of these booking times.
