Angle Park Preview

Racing News

It’s a huge night here at headquarters with the running of the Group 3 Howard Ashton Final, race 8 on the programme.  There is a massive $25,000 to the winner on offer.  There is also 3 terrific heats of the Shane McQueen Memorial over the 600m, which are races 3 to 5 on the programme.  So it’s a fantastic night of racing and we should go home on the right side of the ledger.

Race 1 is a very interesting one at that as there looks to be several chances at each way odds.  There is a lot of pace down on the rails and that’s where the winner should come from, so I gave the nod to the Kim Johnstone runner in Not Held.  He won from this draw last start in 30.07 and will prove the one to catch.  Lucky Road is another who is in fine form and can’t be overlooked.  Add in Pelican Keeping and Victa Brooke for the first four and trifecta.  Box Up 2.3.6.7

Race 2 and the two main chances look to be Dee Ivy for Dean Decrea and Jeddy Bale out in box 7 for Tony Rasmussen.  Both have a good turn of early speed so it should be a mad dash to the 1st turn.  The minors look a bit harder so I went with Vector who is racing well and Dyna Wendy who keeps on running a place.  Box Up 2.3.7.8

This is the 1st of the 600m heats and a class one at that.  He’s A Villian showed how good he is with a nice win here last week from the same draw in a slick 35.11 and there is no reason why he won’t do it again.  Lochinvar Akira is the interesting runner as he is a chance of leading this for a long way so he is a must for the trifecta.  Add in Allen Warlock who will be sprouting wings late.  Box Up 1.3.5.8

Race 4 the 2nd of the 600m heats and we see the classy Footluce Diva from box 5.  She is in outstanding form with 3 straight wins here all in quick times so it’s very hard to tip against her.  Freesia Bale is another who has the form on the board and will run another cheeky race.  Box Up 3.5.6.7

The final of the 3 heats and it looks the inside 4 for mine and Grifter Bale has a terrific record over this trip and should prove very hard to beat from box 3.  Young Gun McBain looks the pace setter and Supersonic Hawk will be flying home late.  Add in Cobalt Mist for value.  Box Up 1.2.3.4

Race 6 and we are back to the sprint.  Peejay Jack has the perfect draw of 1 and should prove far too strong for trainer Robyn Mackellar.  He should be able to kick up early and win.  The minors are a wide open affair and any of the other 7 is a chance of filling the placings.  Box Up 1.5.6.8

Race 7 and Alderley Reform can return to the winners circle after running several seconds. He has drawn box 1 and looks very hard to beat in this.  Gun McBain is another who has the form on the board and will be right in the mix.  Barnes Bay continues to race well and can’t be overlooked for the trifecta.  Box Up 1.4.7.8

The Howard Ashton Final is race 8 and there is $25,000 up for grabs to the winner.  Good luck to all connections in this as all are a very good chance.  Aussie Noorumba gets the nod for me on his last start 29.84 win here.  He has the form on the board with 5 wins from 13 runs at this venue.  Long Gully Ben can be hit and miss on box rise but is strong along with Mojito Mayhem who has been well travelled of late and is well drawn down in box 2.  Box Up 2.4.5.8 in a tough event.

Race 9 and we tipped Yiche several weeks ago at big odds and she got run down but tonight she should ping to the front and hold on.  Kalden Legenda’s string of wins came to a halt when 2nd here last week after leading early but he can’t be overlooked on his talent.  Allen Hodney is well drawn in this and is a chance of causing an upset if there is early trouble at each way odds.  Box Up 2.3.6.7

Race 10 and this is a very open affair with a heap of chances.  The pace will be coming from the 3 Gunsmoke McBain and 7 Blu Light Banjo.  Both will be right up there early and should figure in the money.  Box Up 1.3.7.8

The final event of the night, race 11 and Electric Impulse should start the punters elect on her recent wins here.  She has early pace and will prove hard to beat.  General Hap looks a chance to pinch a place at odds along with Christies Boy.  Box Up 1.3.6.7

LOCAL INDUSTRY NEWS

2015 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON TONIGHT

Last week at Angle Park there were two exciting semi finals of the 2015 Howard Ashton where the first four placegetters from each semi final qualified for tonights Group 3 final.

There was drama in the first semi final even before the greyhounds reached the boxes where one of the favourites for the series Check Yo Self escaped from her trainer Wayne Ryan and unfortunately had to be a late scratching from the event. This opened the door a little for race favourite Aussie Noorumba who had to get to the first turn first from box 1 and avoid any trouble. The Bill Wudarczyk trained youngster prefers to be drawn a touch wider as he goes straight on the first turn so a quick beginning was required. As the boxes flew open Aussie Noorumba showed terrific speed to lead early and whilst he ran a touch wide on the first turn he balanced up took them to the back straight in front. In hot pursuit were Galactic Viper, Girl From Alice and Long Gully Ben.

Aussie Noorumba ran 4.45 and 16.91 to the back where he appeared to be in no danger going on to win by more than 2 lengths in a very quick 29.84 for the 515m journey. Long Gully Ben came from midfield to grab second also breaking 30 seconds with Galactic Viper hanging on well for third. Lucy Fergo came from a long way back to grab fourth and qualify for next week’s final. The box draw certainly hasn’t helped Aussie Noorumba and Long Gully Ben drawing the squeeze boxes so they will be hoping for plenty of luck on the first turn.

In the second semi final last week the Peter Franklin trained Mojito Mayhem raced up on the pace before over powering Long Gully Stevi in the shadows of the post to win by ¾ lengths with Scottish Thistle rattling home from the tail of the field to grab third. Mrs Bubbles ran another consistent race to grab fourth. Trained in Victoria Mojito Mayhem has ventured across the border with success at Mount Gambier recently however it was the first time he saw the Angle Park circuit and has now established himself as a great chance in the final after an impressive 4.56, 17.14, 29.97 win. The box draw has suited all three with Mojito Mayhem again out of box 2, Long Gully Stevi who doesn’t mind the wide boxes and Scottish Thistle should get a nice smother from the inside.

The Final field in Box Draw order is:

1.  Scottish Thistle                                     Michael Stewart

2.  Mojito Mayham                                                 Peter Franklin

3.  Lucy Fergo                                          Michael Giniotis

4.  Aussie Noorumba                                              Zbigniew Wudarczyk

5.  Long Gully Ben                                                 Paula Hearnden

6.  Galactic Viper                                       David Geall

7.  Mrs Bubbles                                                     Andrew Peden

8.  Long Gully Stevi                                                Paula Heanden

9.  Gelignite Jack (1st Res)                          Scr

10.Lady Xanthe (2nd Res)                             Scr

The $37,500 Group 3 Final will be race 8 on the program and is listed to jump at 9.12pm (SA time).

The Breeders 2015 series has one further series to follow the Howard Ashton. That will be the Gawler Breeders 2015 to be run on the 9th June and 16th June.

Nominations close Thursday 4th June at 9.00am with GRSA

SHANE MCQUEEN HEATS

The Shane McQueen heats will also been run tonight and it is great to see three heats with some of the best middle distance greyhounds in the State doing battle over the 600m.

The first heat features one of the favourites for the series in He’s A Villian for trainer Lisa Rasmussen. She has got him firing over the middle distance winning 5 of his last 6 starts over the 600m. Box 8 should not worry him and he looks very hard to beat. His main challengers will come from Lochinvar Akira who can run home powerfully, Regal Looper who will be hard to catch if he led and the highly credentialed Ash Flash who has competed mostly over the staying trip in SA.

In heat 2 the clash between Footluce Diva and Freesia Bale is one not to be missed. Footluce Diva for Ken Trowbridge is right back to her best after a short stint back across the border. She won here in a blistering 34.92 a few weeks ago getting her cherry ripe for tonights heats however Freesia Bale for Wendy Matcott could not be going any better with two wins in her last four starts over the middle distance. Other hopes with Victa Victoria and Castanea along with the Cam Butcher trained kennel mates Lindy Sue and Winbrook who have oodles of ablity.

The final heat see’s Grifter Bale return to the 600m after dominating most of our feature staying events recently. He has an exceptional record over the 600m winning 4 out of 7 starts and no doubt inform trainer Ben Rawlings will have him firing tonight. It’s a tough heat with Supersonic Hawk, Young Gun McBain, Anisa Bale and Coorong Kid all with winning chances.

It looks a fabulous series on paper with the first two from each heat and the two fastest thirds qualifying for next week’s final which carries total prizemoney of $6,875.

LUNA JINX IN THE SUNSHINE STATE FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

Local trainer Gavin Harris has advised his superstar stayer Luna Jinx has flown up to Brisbane during the week to be trained by Tony Brett for the QLD staying series over the next 3 weeks.  She is trialling in between races tonight at Albion Park in preparation for the Gold Cup 710m Group 1 heats on Thursday 4th June, with the Final on the 11th June. If she performs well enough Gavin is hopeful she gets selected for the Superstayers listed race on Thursday 18th June at Albion Park before returning back to SA.

ASTON WINGARD AND REAL FLASH ON THE NATIONAL STAGE FOR TROY MURRAY

In recent years leading local trainer Troy Murray is used to travelling interstate with his greyhounds but this weekend he will be clocking up the frequent flyer miles with Aston Wingard competing in the Group 2 Cyril Rowe Cup Final on Friday night at Bulli and then up and coming sprinter Real Flash competes in the Group 2 WA Oaks at Cannington on Saturday night.

Last Friday night at Bulli, Troy boxed both Fast Noodle and Aston Wingard in the heats over the 472m with Aston Wingard doing a super job to win his heat and Fast Noodle also performing well running third. Fast Noodle is again engaged on Friday night drawing box 7 in race 6 on the card but all eyes will be on the Ray Borda owned Aston Wingard who will be hoping to claim the $40,000 first prize on offer. He has drawn box 7 in race 8 due to start at 8.38pm (SA Time) and does appear one of the outsiders however just to make the final is a terrific achievement.

The Final field in Box Draw order for the Cyril Rowe is:

1.  Ride The Rails                                      K Bravo

2.  Fantastic Sid                                                    J Fletcher

3.  Fancy Top                                                       A Azzopardi

4.  Wuxi                                                 L Azzopardi

5.  Kayda Shae                                         K Bravo

6.  Winsome Jacko                                    M Finn

7.  Aston Wingard                                      T Murray

8.  Waymore Blues                                                K Bravo

9.  Let It Develop (1st Res)                            J Lord

10.Estranged (2nd Res)                                L Azzopardi

On Saturday night the exciting Real Flash is one of the favourites for the WA Oaks after a brilliant 30.41 heat win last week. She has drawn box 5 for the Troy Murray kennel and has carried on from her brilliant win two starts ago when she ran a blistering 29.49 in winning at headquarters. She just needs some luck early with a bit of room and she will be right in the finish. He main challenger also has an SA interest with Weblec Belle trained by Jeff Britton being SA Owned and SA Bred. She is owned by Neville Loechel & Jeff Weber and was bred by Mike Wittholz. She won her heat in a slick 30.42 and has drawn slightly better than Real Flash. The race is race 5 on the card at Cannington and is surely one race not to be missed.

The Final field in Box Draw order for the WA Oaks is:

1.  Ronray Dreamer                                                B McPherson

2.  Weblec Belle                                                   J Britton

3.  Ruble Monellie                                      D Hobby

4.  Starboost                                                        S Kavanagh

6.  Sable Island                                         R Honor

7.  Jamaica The Fun                                  L Isaac

8.  West On Delly                                      J Britton

9.  West On Jorji (1st Res)                            C Halse

10.Grey Gold (2nd Res)                                C Halse

POLICY RELEASED FOR TRIALLING AT ANGLE PARK AND GAWLER BEFORE THE RACE MEETING

The Industry Consultative Group recently met and discussed the trialling policies at race meetings and in particular how the Monday nights Angle Park structured policy has been accepted. The ICG panel decided to accept the Monday night policy for all Angle Park (except Thursday night) and Gawler meetings allowing for trialling to be conducted between kennels closing and the start of the first race. Kenneling times for these meetings will be extended by 15 minutes to allow for these trials to occur the same as Monday night.

The policy will now be introduced for Angle Park Monday & Wednesday along with Gawler Tuesday, Friday and Sunday to start from the Angle Park Monday meeting 4th May 2015. This will now be the sole policy for trialling at race meetings.

RACE MEETING TRIAL POLICY
Angle Park Monday & Wednesday along with Gawler Tuesday, Friday, Sunday (commencing Monday’s meeting - 4 May 2015)

The following lists the order in which greyhounds will be selected in the event if more than 8 greyhounds nominated.

2)          Trainers that have greyhounds engaged and are located in an area affected by track closures.
3)          Trainers that have greyhounds engaged.
4)          Satisfactory trials.
5)          Other greyhounds.

2)          For Angle Park Wednesday, Gawler Tuesday & Friday trainer to contact GRSA between 9.00am and 10.00am on the day to nominate.

3)          For Gawler Sunday trainer to contact GRSA between 8.00am and 9.00am on the scratching line on the day to nominate.

9)          Trainers with other greyhounds engaged can utilize the extra kennel space until such time they are ready to leave OR trainers with no other greyhounds will be free to leave following their trial.

Please Note
Kennelling times will be 15 minutes earlier for these meetings from 4th May to allow for these trials.

·         If there are 12 races at Angle Park or Gawler there will be NO trials.

·         The Vet Clinic at these meetings cannot be used to accommodate any greyhounds to allow for extra trialling greyhounds. This policy has been introduced so that participants book in under the policy. The Vet Clinic needs to be available for the Vet and Stewards at race meetings

Exceptions to this Policy–

·  Thursday nights are kept available for the option for Interstate greyhounds to solo trial in a lead up to our Group races and also local greyhound’s trialling for Group racing interstate.

·  Local greyhounds will be allowed to solo trial in a lead up to a feature race upon request and they will take one of the eight kennels available for trialling ahead of the policy and sit separately to the 4 dog trials. Feature races are considered to be – Adelaide Cup, Gawler Cup, Oaks, Derby, Howard Ashton, Brian Johnstone, SA Sprint, SA Distance Championship, SA Anniversary Cup, SA Country Cup, National Finals & any Group race Interstate.

·  Local greyhounds will be allowed to trial on a race night, where they are in preparation for a feature event and nominated for a meeting and the race does not stand up. This will include all distances and also take precedence over the policy.

·  If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires a trial in between this will be conducted as a solo trial and sit separately to the 2 four dog trials.

Whilst these changes increase the time between kennelling and the first race by 15 minutes it should provide an opportunity for more trialling opportunities for one and two dog trainers in particular.

It is extremely important that trainers book in to trial at these race meetings. No trials will be accepted outside of these booking times.
