TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Well there goes another month and before we know it we will be the Easter holidays.  Last week we had mixed success but didn’t nail as many trifectas as we could have but still picked a few winners at handy odds. The main races on the programme are two very good grade 5 races the 5th and the 6th and a fantastic FFA in race 7.

Race 1 and we kick off the night with a very open event.  I like Black Bottle out in box 6.  He found a heap of trouble last start in a FFA and looked very unlucky so he gets my top pick, despite the draw.  Mr Leonardo returned to the winners circle with a 30.05 win but can be hit and miss on box rise.  Add in Sound Effort who has the perfect draw along with Elay Galaxy.  Box Up 1.3.6.8

Race 2 and winning form is good form so we can’t go past Wheel Spinner.  He has won his last 5 on the trot, all in quick times so he is the stand out.  Magic Supreme and Getty Bale also look a place chance.  So let’s go with 6 from 1.2.3 Boxed.

Race 3 and there is a heap of pace in this event and the inform Coorong Kid looks the one to beat again after his recent efforts.  Boonoona Boy is more than capable when on song and is boxed for a bold showing.  Nowak loves to run a place and has his paw on the till.  Box Up 1.3.4.5.

The 4th and this is the distance race of the night, Zara McLaren can return to the winners circle.  She can be hit and miss early but is very strong.  Du Plessis has pace and should lead here for a long way, 6 from 1.8.2.

Race 5 and I like one here at each way odds and that is Sporting Tears. If Big Zap misses the kick he looks a good chance, however if the 1 dog begins it will be all over red rover.  Box up 1.2.4.8 in a very good betting race.

The 6th and this is a very tough affair with several runners having a big chance in this.  I will keep it quick and short so box up 2.4.5.8 but have a sneaky place bet on the 4.

Race 7 and how good is the FFA tonight.  They are all a chance on their night but a couple have drawn poorly.  I will stick with the inform Squall Bale for Tony Rasmussen.  He will be charging home and only needs an ounce of luck to win again.  The other big chances are the pacey Stew’s Mistake and Woodnear, add Excusez Moi and that is the trifecta.  Box Up 1.2.3.6.

The 8th and Kalden Kapone can ping and win despite being drawn in box 5 he should carve across and prove the goods.  Blue Viper has pace and if there is trouble is a chance of pinching this from box 1.  Hailstorm Billy will be running on like a tornado and can’t be over looked.  Box Up 1.2.5.7

The 600m event is race 9 on the card and He’s A Villian should be far too strong in the small field and lead and win.  Volta Allen has been the big improver and is a place hope so let’s box up 3 here for $3.00,  numbers 1.2.5

Race 10 and Dakota Ruby should be very hard to beat after her win last week in a slick 29.94.  That was her first race start since August last year.  Kingda Kahn continues to run in the top 3 and has pace.  Add in Physical Road and we will be right around the mark.  Box Up 1.4.5.7

The final event and the inside 2 are the main players in this.  Master Bekim and Koko Cabana both can be hit and miss early but are strong.  Box Up 1.2.7.8. in a good betting race which ends a terrific night of racing.

TODD GRAY PREVIEWS OUR FEATURE RACES TONIGHT AT ANGLE PARK INCLUDING THE VETERANS MIXED FINAL
Race 7 Free For All
The Box Draw makes the race interesting with the top three all drawn where they need to be, Woodnear will find itself close to if not favourite,  he was still a good effort last week, surrounded by pace still managed to muster up to 3rd and was a luckless  in running , with less early speed, will be a major threat. Squall Bale will be slow out and storming home at the end giving the beautiful rail run to Stews Mistake. Gawler Cup finalist Kalden Balerion will have to overcome traffic in running and Kalden Legenda may squeeze the middle dogs up looking for the rails run on the first turn. Selections 2-3-1-5
Race 8 Gap Racing Series Final
Kallina Allen for trainer Matthew Payne has only got better and better with each run and will be looking for 4 wins straight, leading virtually all the way in her heat at 4.5 years old she proves that age means nothing and will be the one to beat. Blue Viper and Hailstorm Billy are drawn well and will be the strong run home dogs and if the favourite doesn’t lead Kalden Kapone will. Allen Illem and Merlot Monelli who aren’t boxed to win can still fill multiples. Selections- 7-1-5-2

THE RAZLDAZL LAUNCHING PAD – NOMINATIONS CLOSE TOMORROW
In September last year the Sandown GRC changed their Launching Pad feature event into a sweepstakes event where tickets were sold to enter the race. There were 64 tickets sold and this has enabled them to increase their prizemoney for the race to an unbelievable $200,000 with $140,000 for first, $40,000 for second and $20,000 for third.

There are special conditions on the race being for all greyhounds that have won between 1 and 6 races and have not had more than 30 starts. The heats will be run at Sandown over the 515m on Thursday 26th March with the $200,000 final run on Thursday 2nd April.

Greyhound Racing SA was able to secure a ticket and will give a greyhound the opportunity to compete in this lucrative series. We will run a heat and final series to determine who will make the Launching Pad heats on 26th March.

The heats will be run on Wednesday 4th March over the 515m at Angle Park for greyhounds that have won 1-4 races and no more than 28 starts. The heats will be worth $860 and will be Non Penalty events. The final will be run at Angle Park on Thursday 12th March over the 515m with prizemoney of $4,415 and will also be Non Penalty.
The winner of the final will take their spot in the Launching Pad heats two weeks later however if the winner for whatever reason cannot take their spot then the next qualified greyhound will be given that opportunity.

GRSA as restricted the series to 1-4 wins and 28 starts incase a greyhound wins both heat and final so this will still keep them eligible. We have also made the final, two weeks before the Launching Pad heats at Sandown giving the trainer an opportunity to get across the border and trial for the big race.
Nominations close tomorrow (Friday 27th February) at 9.00am with GRSA.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND ANNIVERSARY CUP HEATS
Feature racing returns to Angle Park next month with the running of the SA Distance Championship over 731m and the SA Anniversary Cup over 515m on Thursday 12th March. Both finals are open events worth $14,500 for the Distance with unplaced and $13,750 for the Sprint with the winner collecting $10,000.
The honour role for both events are a who’s who of Greyhound racing with last years winners Token McLaren winning the Distance Championship and Set The Scene taking out the Anniversary Cup.
Heats will be run on Thursday 5th March.
* Nominations close on Monday 2nd March with GRSA at 9.00am.

PORT AUGUSTA ON SATURDAY 7th MARCH
With Port Augusta having to cancel their programmed meeting on February 7 due to nominations and heat they will be hopeful the weather is a lot more kinder for their next meeting on Saturday 7th March.
It will be a Twilight meeting with nominations closing with GRSA at 9.00am on Tuesday 3rd March.

PSYCHOTIC GOLD IN THE SUPER STAYERS AT THE MEADOWS
After her brilliant performance last week in the Group 1 Zoom Top to finish third the Petar Jovanovic trained staying star has been drawn into one of the four heats for the Group 1 Super Stayers at the Meadows on Saturday night. She has been drawn in the second heat which is race 6 on the program due to jump at 8.25pm (SA time) and has been drawn to come from box 5. She is in a very winnable heat and comes up against ex South Australian sprinter Footluce Diva who has stepped up over the 725m with good success and Lady Toy who has drawn perfectly out of the one box.

Luna Jinx has also found her way across the border and will compete in the last heat which is also the last race on the program due to start at 10.27pm (SA time). Normally trained by Gavin Harris she is in the care of Len Ketelaar and hasn’t been helped by the box draw with her drawing box 6. She desperately needs the rails and a bit of luck as she hasn’t been able to find both in recent runs.

We wish both our staying greyhounds all the best on Saturday night.

CLASSIC BET MOUNT GAMBIER CUP HEATS THIS WEEKEND
The Mount Gambier Cup Carnival kicked off last Sunday with two heats of the Produce Store Feature Maiden with the first four qualifying for the $1,860 Final on Cup Final day on Sunday 8th March. Also qualifying on Cup day were the greyhounds that competed in the Banjo Boy Open 600m for the final worth $2,070. This weekend on Sunday the action really hots up with six terrific heats of the Classic Bet Mount Gambier Cup. Local Adelaide trainers venturing down South for the series will be Robyn Mackellar with Barnes Bay, Peejay Jack and Lobo Loco, Ken Gill with Fameroo again this year and the Rasmussen camp with a strong line up including Beach Wary, Sandave Gem, Dyna Vank and Allen Zentax. Some of the best performed at the Mt. Gambier track are the likes of Ireland’s Oyster for Peter Franklin, Thanks Tubby for David Peckham and Who’s Doing What for Tracie Price with many more chances in an exciting series. The racing will be cut throat with only the winners and the two fastest seconds qualifying for the $10,000 Final on March 8.

GAWLER CLASSIC 2014 FINAL ON SUNDAY
After two heats on Tuesday at Gawler the Gawler Classic Final looks to be a very interesting affair dominated by in form trainer Vadim Roz who has qualified 5 of the 8 runners along with both reserves.

Heat 1 winner Gun McBain again looks very hard to beat after easily winning his heat in a slick 30.45 by 8 lengths. This followed on from his impressive Gawler Cup win and will be shooting for 4 straight wins. The other heat was taken out by kennel mate Young Gun McBain who continued his good form with an all the win by 6 lengths in 30.56. The Cameron Butcher pair of Spicy Peppa (1) and Dodger I Am (8) has both drawn perfectly however they will have the job ahead to stop the Vadim Roz bandwagon from rolling on.
