Telling the Tale by the Shadow
It has been an interesting week in greyhound racing here in South Australia. We had the Strathalbyn cup last Sunday and it was fantastic to see the veteran trainer in Allan Francis win with his newcomer Black Daddy. The striking looking performer charged home to collect the bickies and will be definitely be one to follow here at headquarters in the coming weeks. Allan has always had a handy performer in his kennels over the years and has been part of the furniture at the Southern Greyhound Racing Club for as long as I can remember!!!! Yesterday there were 4 heats of the Brian Johnstone Memorial with Melbourne trainer Jeffrey Britton making a clean sweep of them all, ending up with 5 finalists in next Thursdays semi finals as he also had a runner up in the heats. Let’s get on and back a winner tonight. Good luck.
Race 1 and the pacey Blue Viper can bounce back and she can lead and win from her draw of 3. The main dangers look to be Allen Illem and Bogie Classic who is well drawn out in box 8. Box Up 1.2.3.8
The 2nd and this is an even affair, it looks to be between three runners. I will go with All Silver in the Angela Modra kennel. An in-form chaser who is a big chance. Velocity Sapphire is well drawn down in box 1 and will be right in the mix. Box up 1.4.6.7.
The 3rd and this is a distance affair and the well performed Zara McLaren is drawn to kick up and win again. She hasn’t missed a place in her last 4 starts and looks the measuring stick here. Add in Miss Party Girl and Handsome Blue. Box up 1.2.5.8.
Race 4 and the best dog in the race is Grande To Excel. But he is hit and miss on box rise. He would be a special if drawn closer to the fence. I will go with Illusive Allen down on the rails along with Alderley Retreat. Box Up 1.3.6.7.
The 5th and there is a bit of pace in this race and it’s all coming from out wide. There will be one charging home and that is the Wally Harkins chaser in Aeroplane Bowser who won here Monday Night in a handy 30.11 by a big margin. Box Up 2.5.7.8 in a good betting race.
Race 6 and Ten Aces has a good turn of early speed but gets the staggers over the last 50m. Eye Smith is well drawn and the interstater loves this track. Animate will be running on along with Flying Bale. Box Up 1.2.3.6
Race 7 and this is another affair where the pace will be from out wide with the 6 and 7 runners. It appears very open with several chances. Box Up 1.6.7.8 in a good betting race.
The 8th and Stews Mistake is back in form and carving out quick times. He is very hard to go past from box 2. Set The Scene is another along with Fancy Rick, add Wild Soul who will be rattling home late for the trifecta. Box Up 1.2.6.7.
Race 9 and this is a 600m event. It is only a small field of 5 runners and there looks to be 3 main chances. I have gone with He’s A Villian out in box 8. He is smart when on song and should be right in the mix. As It Goes has the form on the board along with Funky Chicken and they are the 3. Box up 2.4.8
Race 10 and there is a bit of pace in this and whoever steps will be hard to catch. Woodside Jagger is smart when on song along with Nevada Smith. Red Tin will be carving across from out wide. Box Up 2.3.4.7
The final event of the evening and Des Hockley has a handy one in Midway Magic. She is well drawn out in 7 and will prove hard to beat. Jeff Guy rarely leaves SA without a winner and has Brazen Bull engaged in box 6. This youngster has only missed a place once in 7 runs. Add in Vera Allen for the trifecta. Box Up 1.5.6.7
Best Bet Race 3 Zara Mclaren Box 1
Best Each Way Race 5 Aeroplane Bowser Box 5
Best Roughie Race 6 Ten Aces Box 8

STRATHALBYN NEWS
2014 DAISH IRRIGATION & FODDER STRATHALBYN CUP FINAL
A hot field lined up on Sunday night for the running of the 2014 Daish Irrigation & Fodder Strathalbyn Cup final. Woodnear for Paul Barry was sent out the favourite from his favourable box 3 position however there was good support for the Allan Francis trained Black Daddy and the Troy Murray trained Kalden Balerion. As the start was effected Who’s Doing What trained in the South East by Tracie Price exploded from box 5 to carve across and lead with Woodnear slotting into a nice position just off heels to the inside of Charter for Lauren Harris with kennel mate Blue Viper railing and Black Daddy lobbing midfield. Into the back straight Woodnear pushed up on the inside of Who’s Doing What to take the lead with Blue Viper nice and handy and Black Daddy making ground out wide on the track. As eyes turned for home Woodnear began to paddle in front with Who’s Doing What railing and Blue Viper out three wide. Black Daddy had been making steady ground however he moved to the extreme outside in the home straight and flashed home to grab the leaders and the Strathalbyn Cup crown. He rated a slick 31.48 for the 536m journey defeating Blue Viper and Who’s Doing What who both battled on strongly. Woodnear looked to be in trouble in the home straight and received a check half way down to finish at the rear of the field. It was Black Daddy’s second run in South Australia since coming from New South Wales after running third in the heat last week and capturing the $7,000 first prize on Sunday night. It was a terrific training performance by Allan Francis to claim the Cup with Black Daddy after only a limited time in SA. Black Daddy has now won 12 races from 42 starts and 11 placings with prizemoney just under $30,000.
Other features on the program were the SA Country Cup won my Morgan McLaren for Tania Forster representing the Strathalbyn track and Apocal Bale for Tony Rasmussen won the Strathalbyn Cup Consolation.
The Les Newton Trophy Grade 6 over 536m will be run on the 30th November when Les will be able to attend and present the trophy after a short stint in hospital.
Strathalbyn trials will now be run on Friday night with Strathalbyn racing on Sundays however the exception to this will be Friday 5th December when there will be NO trials, instead they will be run on Wednesday 3rd December.

BRIAN JOHNSTONE HEATS
Yesterday (Wednesday) at Angle Park we saw the running of four heats of the 2014 Brian Johnstone (Group Three) series. We had 26 final nominations with Jeff Britton dominating winning all four heats and a second with his five runners engaged.

MELBOURNE CUP FINAL TOMORROW TONIGHT
What a great night of racing it will be Interstate tomorrow night with the running of the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup Final being run on a Friday night for the first time. Darren McDonald has a two pronged attack with race favourite Keybow drawn perfectly in box 1 and Awesome Project out of box 4. The race is full of quality and the value looks to be Rob Brittons Above All out of box 3 and Dyna Villa for Jenny Hunt who has an outstanding record from box 8. This race is one not to be missed.
The other feature on the night is the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup for the stayers. This race does look to be a great race on paper however superstar Sweet It Is should claim another feature race and pocket the $100,000 first prize. The supporting program is also outstanding including the Cup Night Sprint which features Group 1 quality greyhounds in My Bro Fabio and Allen Deed.

AGRC NEWS
LUCKY DRAW
We have done a new lucky dog draw for the new year and it is listed later in this document, it started on Thursday 13th November.
Reminder on how it works, this year we have drawn 4 names for each week’s Thursday race 8, next to each name is the box number of the dog you have drawn in Race 8. If your box number happens to win Race 8, you can renew your membership next year (30th June) for half price. We have drawn 8 names on the night of the AGRC Xmas dinner, so some one has to win that night.
If you happen to own or train greyhounds racing on the date that your name has been drawn, you can choose to have your dogs drawn instead of the lucky box number and it works the same if your dog drawn happens to win. It is up to you to notify an AGRC committee member on the night that you want to take up this option and we will randomly draw one of your dogs competing on the night.
AGRC Committee members are Alan Amezdroz, Barry Stewart, Petar Jovanovic, Natalie Bailey, Gabe Vistolli and Gavin Harris.
AGRC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The annual general meeting for the Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club will be held on Sunday 23rd November, 2014, starting at 10:30 am in the Sportsman bar at McQueens Tavern. After the meeting is completed members in attendance will be provided a meal and drinks. Please come along to discuss club initiatives and give the management committee direction on what they would like us to undertake in the coming year.
AGRC XMAS FUNCTION
The AGRC committee has booked 120 places at Chasers Restaurant on Thursday 11th December, for our annual Xmas function. All members and their partners are welcome. The club pays for the buffet and provides drink vouchers for you both on the night. If you wish to bring extra guests that is fine but any guests will pay the normal price for the buffet. If you could please advise Gavin Harris 0418853111 or email [email protected], or Natalie Bailey 0417855532 or email [email protected] by the 4th of December, so we can finalise the numbers. This is great value for all members, so we encourage you all to come along. On the night the AGRC committee will be conducting some raffles and seat prizes as well and it is always a good, fun night.
NEW RED VESTS A BIG HIT
After terrific feedback from the Industry the new red vests are being distributed to all of our tracks to be used as the main apparel for participants. Participants are able to purchase their very own red vets for $20 however GRSA will still always have some available. These vets look very smart and come up particularly well on Sky Racing promoting SA Racing so with that in mind the long parade coats will be phased out of action with participants required to have a black or navy jumper available to be worn under the vests.
An implementation date for Red Vests to be the only apparel used will be advised shortly.
HOT WEATHER POLICY
A reminder to trainers with the hot weather coming to make sure they are aware of the updated conditions relating to the Hot Weather Policy. This policy is available on the GRSA website and also at the track.
PRIZEMONEY INCREASES
In response to better than expected first quarter returns from wagering on South Australian greyhound racing product by national wagering operators, the Board of GRSA has resolved to make an additional allocation to industry returns for the current year. With effect from November 10, the returns for Category 2 racing – which currently includes Monday night meetings at Angle Park and Tuesdays at Gawler – will increase by an average of 15% across all grades. Allowing for the previous increases announced in July, this decision takes the total increase to industry returns in 2014-15 to more than $370,000 equating to 6% growth on the previous year.
Additional funding will also be provided to Strathalbyn, Mt Gambier, Port Augusta and the GOTBA to remove their dependence upon the charging of nomination fees for race meetings at those venues. This initiative will not only satisfy a key objective within the 2012 Strategic Plan, but also reflects the Board’s belief that such charges represent an unreasonable burden on our participants. On the basis of the current arrangements, the removal of nomination fees will result in an annual saving of $50,000 to participants at those venues.
The following changes to category 2 stakemoney and the removal of all nomination fees will take effect from Monday 10th November, 2014.
