Angle Park Preview

Racing News

With only 10 races tonight it is very important to kick off with a couple of early winners on a solid programme.  Last week’s Cup final was fantastic in front of a huge crowd and I’m sure that all concerned would have been delighted.

Race 1 and the pacey Yiche looks well drawn out in box 8 and can carve across early and win here.  There are several who will be running on and they are Shady Deal and Wrex Bale.  Box Up 1.2.6.8.

Race 2 and the Terry Cahalan trained Alderley Reform can bounce back and win from box 6.  He can be hit and miss on box rise but has a terrific strike rate and gets the nod for mine.  Add in Boonoona Boy and the well performed Young Gun McBain for the trifecta.  Box Up 1.3.6.7.

The 3rd is a distance affair and there are several chances.  Spring Amanda will take up the early lead from box 1 and is a chance of pinching this if there is a little trouble early.  Psychotic Gold and Long Gully Surf will be rattling home over the final stages.  Box Up 1.2.3.7.

Race 4 and the pace will come from Bogie Classic down in box 3, she can lead and win here.  Yambla Mick is better than recent form suggests and is drawn perfectly in box 1.  Box up 1.3.5.6.

The 5th and Big Zap looks a special on last week’s run when 2nd behind Big Dingo in 30.18.  He can kick up early and lead.  There are several for the minors so let’s go with him as a stand out.  2 from 4.5.6.7.

Race 6 and the book ends are the main chances tonight and whoever leads will win this.  Cash In Looper and Punishment are both very smart on their night and will give a big showing.  Box up 1.3.4.8 in a good betting race.

The 7th and I like the well performed Emerley Senorita in this.  She has been racing well without winning but she has a good turn of early pace and is strong.  Cool Guinness has pace and is the main danger out in box 8.  Box Up 2.5.6.8

Race 8 and this is a top class field and Galilee Spirit will find this a lot easier than his last start 7th behind the talented Victorian Blurred Lines.  He won his previous 4 with 3 of them from this draw.  The dangers are Big Dingo and the pacey Woodnear.  We can’t forget Genghis Kahn out in box 8 who will be flying late.  Box Up 3.6.7.8.

The 9th and there are only 5 runners in this over the 600m and all are more than capable over this trip.  So let’s go in order for a $1outlay in the trifecta 1.2.4.

The final event on the 10 race card and we will go home on a special and that is Blue Viper down in box 1.  She has returned to SA and will be very hard to beat in this grade.  Fiesty Fairy is smart when on song and has appeal.  Add in Montgomery Road for the trifecta.  Box Up the inside four ( 1.2.3.4.)

ALLEN DEED WINS THE GROUP 1 MACRO MEATS ADELAIDE CUP
BOOM sprinter Allen Deed confirmed himself as one of the stars of Australian greyhound racing with a dominant victory in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup at Angle Park last Friday night.
Andrea Dailly’s superstar stamped himself as the one to beat when clocking a track-record closing sectional (12.29) in his heat last week and he didn’t disappoint in the final.
Allen Deed isn’t a noted beginner, but when he stepped cleanly and was among the leading pack coming to the first turn, only bad luck was going to beat him.
Blurred Lines took the early lead from Valladeres with the two favourites — Allen Deed and Oakvale Destiny — poised to launch just behind them.
Allen Deed ($2.70 favourite) then exploded down the back straight, zooming around Blurred Lines ($9) on the final turn before coming away to score in a lightning quick 29.48 seconds.
He got home by four and three-quarter lengths, with SA Oaks winner Oakvale Destiny ($2.80) a further half-length back in third.

Earlier in the night, Kim Johnstone’s talented sprinter Wild Soul took out the Adelaide Cup Consolation and She’s Illusive the Spud Regis @ Stud while Psychotic Gold claimed the 2014 Premier’s Cup.

GREYHOUND SA’S AUCTION REACHES RECORD NUMBERS
The Adelaide Greyhound Racing Clubs greyhound Auction was held last Sunday with a huge $203,250 being spent in the hope of finding the next champion of the sport.

There were 67 young greyhounds up for auction with all lots selling, top price paid was $8,500 for a pup in the catalogue from the 2012 SA Greyhound of the year Hopes Up and the average price paid on Sunday was $3,033. With racing greyhounds having the potential to win upward of $700,000 and the average price of pups sold on Sunday being only $3,033, the low entry price for some well-bred pups gave the opportunity for first time participants to enter the sport.

This is the first greyhound auction in 10 years and with the high amount of interest on the day, the Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club will be looking to hold this auction annually. Each pup which was sold at Auction is eligible to enter a $10,000 to the winner race series to be held in 2016.

CULT HERO ERNIE BUNG ARROW RETIRES
Ken Gill’s champion chaser finally succumbed to injury last week after a spirited battle to return to the track and defend his Adelaide Cup crown. Ernie ran around in the heats of the Cup but missed the kick badly to finish near the rear of the field but bounced back to form at Gawler with a dogged win and all signs appeared bright however it was discovered he was injured again so Ken decided to retire the champ. Fittingly he has gone out a winner and provided some of the most exciting times seen in greyhound racing in recent history. Ernie Bung Arrow will now stand at stud and it is hoped a few liitle “Ernie’s” will be greeting the judge in the not to distant future.

Ernie Bung Arrow was a winner of 21 of only 24 starts with 1 placing and prizemoney of around $170,000. His honor roll included the 2013 Champion Puppy Final, 2013 Group 3 Schweppes Derby, 2013 Group 1 Triple M Adelaide Cup, 2013 Group 3 Brian Johnstone Final, 2014 SA Sprint Championship and was named the 2013 SA Greyhound of the Year.

CATCHING PEN STARTED ON MONDAY NIGHT AT ANGLE PARK
Angle Park started on the Catching Pen on Monday night with good results. This will now continue for all races and trials. Trialling will now be all Catching Pen for Tuesday and Saturday with Specials (FOL) conducted at the end. The only change back to the FOL will be the required move of Gawler to Angle Park on Tuesdays during the final redevelopment of the venue which should occur in November.

SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE RUN IN OCTOBER
Owners & Trainers are reminded of the domiciliary clause on the SA Sprint Championship coming towards the end of October due to the shifting of the Gawler Cup to February. To be eligible a greyhound must have been domiciled in SA for a period of not less than 76 days out of the 150 days immediately prior to the time fixed for the finalising of nominations and drawing of fields. (Nationals policy adopted)
This date going back 76 days is 6th August as nominations close on Monday 20th October.

The $4,415 heats are scheduled to be run on Thursday 23rd October, with the Final to be run on Thursday 30th October. Total prizemoney for the listed final will be $22,000, with the winner’s share of $15,000.
Nominations close on Monday 20th October at 9.00am with GRSA.

CLASSIC 2014 PRELUDE (2)
The second Prelude of Classic 2014 will be run shortly, with the Heats listed for Wednesday 29th October. The Final then follows on Monday 3rd November. As always prizemoney levels are determined by the number of Heats we run. In Prelude (1) we ran two heats and the heats were $1700 and the Final $4,800.
*Nominations close on Friday 24th October with GRSA at 9.00am

KAY MCPHEE RETIRES THIS FRIDAY
After nearly 27 years with Greyhound Racing SA Kay McPhee has decided to retire. For the last 11 years of that time Kay has worked fulltime in the Racing Administration section and has been a valuable member of the GRSA team. She has successfully dealt with many parts of the business including processing of all prizemoney, greyhound namings and industry account details just to name a few. Her attention to detail and experience will be missed by our department and the company. We wish Kay all the best in her retirement.

Kerry Algate from Entrée Recruitment has been employed to fill the role vacated by Kay in the short term.

GRADING CONSULTATION SESSIONS

The consultation sessions will be as follows:
Friday 17th October Strathalbyn

It would be appreciated if you look at the big picture of grading, considering items such as policy, programming, order of preference, grades, OzChase etc.

TOPGUN FIELD ANNOUNCED
The field for this year’s Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun has been released, with the finalists combining for a total of over $2 million in prizemoney. The October 25 extravaganza has brought together Australia’s best sprinters, all vying for Group 1 glory and the $150,000 cheque awaiting the victor of Australia’s richest invitation-only event.
Leading trainer Darren McDonald will put the polish on two of the Topgun finalists, namely two-time Group 2 winner Awesome Project (box six) and Group 1 Perth Cup winner Keybow (box two). Surprisingly, the Topgun is one feature event that has eluded the Devon Meadows trainer during the race’s 21-year history. New South Wales is represented by two outstanding female sprinters – Chica Destacada and Zipping Willow. Trained by Doreen Drynan, Chica Destacada (box one) brilliantly took out this year’s National Sprint Championship, while Zipping Willow (box eight) has tasted Group success on two occasions, and won 13 of her 14 race starts between April and August this year. The speedy Chica Destacada is drawn perfectly to showcase her brilliant turn of foot. Tasmanian Buckle Up Wes (box five) returns to The Meadows after his amazing 2014 Group 1 Australian Cup victory, and is fresh off two outstanding wins at Launceston in August (29.59 and 29.71). Trainer Tony Brett – who took out this race in 2005 with Black Enforcer – returns to The Meadows with his latest superstar Flash Reality (box four), a winner of the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup and Group 2 QLD Derby at Albion Park (both in race record time). Australia’s latest Group 1 winner Allen Deed (box seven), is the sole representative for owner Paul Wheeler and reigning Victorian Trainer of the Year Andrea Dailly. The son of Jarvis Bale and Greta Bale is one of the best finishers in the country, powering to his first Group victory last week, taking out the Adelaide Cup in 29.48. Jeff Britton will be looking to continue his remarkable 2014 season, with Oakvale Destiny (box three) aiming to win her second Group 1 event after her Sapphire Crown success back in May.
Box draw – Group 1 Sky Racing TOPGUN (525m)
1. Chica Destacada – Doreen Drynan
2. Keybow - Darren McDonald
3. Oakvale Destiny - Jeff Britton
4. Flash Reality – Tony Brett
5. Buckle Up Wes – Ted Medhurst
6. Awesome Project – Darren McDonald
7. Allen Deed – Andrea Dailly
8. Zipping Willow – Jason Mackay
Reserves
9. Mepunga Hayley – Jeff Britton
10. My Bro Fabio – Brooke Ennis
2014 SA COUNTRY CUP
Below are details of how and where greyhounds can qualify for the $5,000 SA Country Cup Final, to be run at Strathalbyn over 536 metres on Strathalbyn Cup Final night Sunday 16th November 2014. The SA Country Cup will be rotated each year between Gawler and Strathalbyn to be held on each clubs Cup night.

Conditions
·         All South Australian Greyhound Racing Clubs outside of Angle Park will conduct heats, or nominate greyhounds from which the Greyhound Racing SA Grading Department will choose two representatives.
·         The event is open to all South Australian greyhounds that are not above Grade 5 at Angle Park (APK City A & APM City B meetings only) over 515 metres at the time of nomination. Winner of each event takes a penalty including the final.
Special Exceptions:
Mount Gambier and Port Augusta Clubs are allowed to include non-South Australian trainers under strict conditions:
  1. The trainer has had starters at 5 meetings for Pt Augusta and 15 meetings for Mt Gambier in the previous 12 months.
  2. The trainer can only qualify for one of the clubs.
  3. The trainer must have trained the greyhound nominated for the previous 3 months.
·         Graders’ discretion will be used to determine the best nominated.
·         The greyhound must be SA trained (except Mount Gambier & Port Augusta as above).
o   A South Australian trained greyhound is defined as one that has been racing in SA for a period of not less than 3 out of the 6 months immediately prior to the time of nomination.
·         The greyhound must have started at least 2 times in the last 12 months at the track it is attempting to represent.
·         There will be a maximum of two heats per Club with the winners of each heat qualifying. If there is only one heat conducted then the first two placegetters will qualify.
·         The two reserves will be determined firstly by a ballot of the second placegetters from all heats. The third placegetters will then be considered by ballot if required. If a heat was not conducted at the track, then that track is not included in the ballot. Should a greyhound be withdrawn prior to the ballot, the next placed greyhound from that Club’s heat will be selected.
·         Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another track in this series, unless there are insufficient nominations to fill the field.
·         Once qualified for the Country Cup Final the greyhound will be ineligible for the Strathalbyn Cup series as the final is run on the same night as the County Cup.

2015 GAWLER PRODUCE STAKES
The 2015 Gawler Produce Stakes will be run by GRSA in conjunction with the Gawler Greyhound Racing Club. Once again we will offer guaranteed Final Stakemoney, which will be $22,000. The estimate for the total series prizemoney is $40,000, based on this year’s series. The series is for greyhounds whelped in 2013.
In 2015 we will again be offering additional incentives for trainers to nominate. A bonus will be offered to any greyhound which can win both the Produce Stake and the Gawler Gold Cup (which is to be run in February next year).

If Regal Looper does not win the Gawler Gold Cup in February, then it will jackpot to $11,000 in 2015. A jackpot of $1,000 will be added each year until won, when it will revert to $5,000.
The SA Bred bonus will also be continued; should the winner of the Final be SA bred, there will be a SA Bred bonus of $1,000 to the owner.

The dates for this series will be Heats on Tuesday 23rd June 2015, Semi Finals on Tuesday 30th June 2015 and the Final on Sunday 5th July 2015. There will be a breeders bonus of $500 for the winner of the Final and a consolation event also.
