TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

How good was the racing here last week and it continues tonight with a strong 10 event programme with one of the highlights being a heat of the 2020 Bayroad Queen Stayers Cup. Zipping Galon has to start the punters elect after he charged home from back in the field to claim the SA Distance Championship here last week, a special mention to the Ben Rawlings kennel for leading in 6 winners on the programme including the 2 feature winners.

Race 1 - We have a toughie to kick start the night so we will go with Springvale Slick down in box 1, he has handy form and might be able to kick up early from the draw and will be right in the mix late. Cawbourne Buster has failed to beat a runner home at his past couple, he is a lot better than those efforts and is amongst the main chances. Box up 1.2.7.8

Race 2 - This is the Maiden of the evening and we have 3 first starters from leading kennels, Quinnish is from the Corby kennel, their last crop was sensational so we must keep her very safe. Bella Bouchet is from the Rawlings team and they are on fire so she can run into the trifecta along with Hayride Ump. In Order 6-8-4

Race 3 - I like one in this who will be running on strongly Spring Cobra, he is hit and miss on box rise but only needs luck early to be right on their backs into the run to the 1st turn. Cawbourne Coco is drawn to lead and will be hard to beat, add Cripps Dusty for the value runner for the First Four. Box Up 3.4.7.8

Race 4 - This is a top class 600m event and this is my each way special of the night Boss McLaren, he has been missing the start over the sprint in recent runs but when on the lure is very strong he, gets a chance to lead here and will be at juicy odds. Couture was a massive run on debut here over the sprint last start, he came from near last to power home over the top of them to get up and score in 30.19, he looks well primed for this. Box Up 3.4.6.7

Race 5 - This is the distance affair and as mentioned earlier Zipping Galon was a huge effort here last week when winning from well back, he has lost his early dash of late so will have to do the same again tonight and run on strongly. Sir Truculent was outstanding when he charged late to run 2nd in the Distance Final, he is a true stayer and is the big danger. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 6 - Cawbourne Hunter is knocking on the door on his recent runs, he has the gun draw tonight and is a chance of leading in this. Recklessness has handy short course form and the well-travelled sprinter is amongst the chances. Ask Me Now is very strong and will be the one rattling home and is a must for our First Four. Box Up 1.3.5.8

Race 7 - Tough event we have here as there is a heap of chances and its extremely hard to narrow it down to just the 3 chances. Long Gully Barny is definitely the inform runner, he has won his 4 on the trot all in good fashion. Irapsag Miss is another who has winning form, she will be at handy odds and cant be overlooked despite her wide draw. Rockstar Fletch and my big value runner West On Bamboo for the minors. Box Up 1.5.7.8

Race 8 - It’s A Riot did exactly what we thought he would do here last week in the Anniversary Cup Final a jumped straight to the front and won in a solid 29.77 from box 3, he looks the leader again and is our top pick again. Tony’s Spark loves this draw and will be right in the finish along with Spring Vinnie and the very strong American Man. Box Up 1.3.5.7

Race 9 - This looks to be a very good betting affair and its another wide event. Buddy Guy is very close to a win and from the rails draw is our top pick. Sweet On Me has won 3 of her past 4 and with her early pace if able to cross will be very hard to beat. Box up 1.3.6.7

Race 10 - Chiefs Sidekick was a massive run here last week when 3rd behind It’s a Riot in the Anniversary Cup Final, he should be able to lead here and win and looks one of the better bets of the night. Dyna Adria is a lot better than recent form suggests she is a big show if she steps. Box Up 2.3.4.6

LOCAL NEWS

BAYROAD QUEEN HEAT TONIGHT

With only one heat of the Bayroad Queen being conducted tonight all 5 eligible greyhounds will be drawn into next week’s $8,000 final when nominations close on Monday.

Good luck to all connections tonight

RACING RETURNS TO GAWLER TOMORROW

With racing returning to Gawler tomorrow all trainers, handlers and essential staff should be aware of the social distancing regulations continuing and that entry will only be permitted from Gate 1.

This is at the Eastern end of the precinct (dirt entrance), all other gates will be locked. Please liaise with the stewards if you intent to leave the venue and then come back during the meeting. No patrons are allowed on oncourse or catering services in keeping with COVID – 19 restrictions and any non-essential person on these premises will be asked to leave immediately.

Tuesday racing at Gawler has been programmed to recommence on Tuesday 12th May.

Separately the Gawler Club has advised that the Show Society has cancelled the Gawler Show for 2020 which normally affects racing at the venue.

2020 GROUP 3 HOWARD ASHTON

The major race for Breeders 2020 is the Group 3 Howard Ashton. Trainers are reminded that the heats will be run on Wednesday, 13th May.

These will be followed by the semi-finals on May 21st and the $37,500 final on May 28th. Total prizemoney for heats and semis will be determined by the number of races run.

The race is for greyhounds that are eligible for Breeders 2020. Greyhounds don’t have to have competed in the preludes to run in the Group 3 Howard Ashton.

Noting the current quarantining in place for the Mt Gambier region, those connections of paid up greyhounds will have the opportunity to compete in the series.

• Nominations for the heats close on Friday, 8th May with GRSA at 9.00am

CHANGES TO NOMINATION CLOSING TIMES

Based on items discussed and approved at the most recent Industry Consultative Group, GRSA has changed some of the days of closing of nominations to aid participants which trial the night before they nominate.

This will hopefully increase our numbers for race meetings resulting in less extension of nominations. Moving the nominations closer to the race date may have implications for the sa.thedogs form analyst releasing as quick as normal.

Below is the table based on a normal week of racing in SA with changes highlighted -

Nominations close 9am on Monday – Angle Park Thursday (no change)

– Mt Gambier Thursday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Tuesday – Gawler Friday (moves from Monday)

                                                 - Mt Gambier Sunday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Wednesday – Murray Bridge Sunday (moves from Tuesday)

Nominations close 9am on Thursday – Angle Park Monday (moves from Wednesday)

-   Gawler Tuesday (no change)

Nominations close 9am on Friday – Angle Park or Murray Bridge Straight Track (no change)

ADMINISTRATION TIME CHANGES FROM NEXT WEEK

As part of the changes previously advised by GRSA during the COVID-19 pandemic, GRSA will be altering their Administration Business hours.

Normal Business hours are 8.30am to 4.30pm, however, from Monday, 4th May these will be varied to 8.30am to 3.30pm during this period.  This change is part of GRSA’s strategy to reduce costs where it can; in order to help alleviate the downturn in business income.

This will have an effect on scratching closing times and trials being booked. Both will now close at 3pm when they would have normally closed at 4.00pm.

Access to the Office and Telephone calls will only be available up until 3.30pm from Monday to Friday.

This will also have some implications on race books with the change in nomination times and early closing of the office there will only be a one page per race book provided which will also save on costs during this period. All information is still available on the GRSA website.

Due to the reduction in office hours participants need to be mindful when lodging paperwork that the processing time may take longer.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.

MURRAY BRIDGE TRIALS

GRSA advise that from March there will no longer be an officiating staff available to clear greyhounds for Satisfactory trials and Qualifying Qualy trials on the fortnightly Tuesday nights at Murray Bridge.

GRSA will send an official to Murray Bridge on a monthly basis on a Friday morning trial session, which has both tracks trialling. This presents an opportunity to also include the Straight Track for Qualifying and Satisfactory Trials. The next trial session will be Friday, 15th May

NON ESSENTIAL PERSONS ONCOURSE AT RACE MEETINGS

GRSA reminds participants with children that due to the COVID-19 restrictions non essential persons and the public are not allowed oncourse which includes children.

Unfortunately during school holidays this can be difficult for some of our participants to manage however they need to make other arrangements for them.

GRSA appreciates the significant changes in place for the industry during this time and appreciates the efforts that are being made and continue to be made to abide due social distancing and restrictions.

GRSA TEXT SERVICE
Participants are reminded if they have not already done so to provide GRSA with your mobile phone number so text messages can get sent updating the most current information in the industry.
