TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

We have a huge 12 event programme here tonight at headquarters and it appears on paper to be a good night to have a punt, we have been in form of late with some handy winners at good odds so lets hope we can continue the form into a big night of racing. As always all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - Justice For All has only had the four starts, he has a good turn of early pace and was run down here last week by Yarindale in good time, he can lead and pinch this for mine. Springvale Ortiz is the improver, he stumbled on box rise here last start so he can be forgiven for that run, he is drawn to run a cheeky race. Box up 1.2.4.7

Race 2 - This is the Maiden of the night and Nockatunga was a good even run when 2nd behind Spofforth on debut, he will only be improved by the run and is well boxed. Banjo Riley made good ground when 2nd Monday and should be cherry ripe for tonight, add Sallynoggin who has handy short course form. Box Up 1.4.5.7

Race 3 - Nipper Zsa has been placed here in two of her last 4, she has the early pace to lead and is amongst the main chances. Two hands George is well drawn, he can be awkward early and will be working home late. Tarra Rocket has the form on the board and will be very hard to beat with early luck. Box up 1.4.5.7

Race 4 - This is the 600m of the night and a very strong one at that, the outside three look the main chances and I’m going with Major Havoc, he made late ground behind Defy here last week although well beaten he should give this a shake. Toora Ziggy will start the punters elect, the small field will suit and he can run quick times with a clear run. Holy Reign is strong and can run the Trifecta. Box Up 2.4.6.8

Race 5 - Lektra Theory has been in fantastic form of late including a slick 29.58 run here Monday night from box 8, he should win again on that effort. Alfieri is a smart type but has been missing the kick, he flew late to run 2nd here last week and is the danger if he steps. Fantastic Pippa appears a place chance. Box up 1.4.5.7

Race 6 - This is certainly a wide open affair with a lot of quality, Querencia stormed home to win in 30.09, he is a class act when in full flight and is drawn for a bold showing. Bold Mirage gets the nod from me as he has drawn down on the fence, he has a heap of early pace and should be able to kick up early and hold the lead, he was only run down here in the final stages last week. Wooden Tiger will be flying late and is a must for the Trifecta. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 7 - Blister was well supported here last week and led them a merry dance to score in 30.07, he looks the leader again and is boxed for a bold showing once again. Rushes is a newcomer from NSW, he has won 5 from 12 and is in the powerful Rasmussen kennel and is sure to be primed for a 1st up assault. Spring Burner and Threaten for our First Four. Box Up 1.2.6.7

Race 8 - The Des Hockley trained Maddison Kaye is our top pick in this, she has been in terrific form of late with wins at Gawler and a very good 2nd here last start behind Lektra Theory, she looks one of the better bets of the night. Sweet Rose is in form and is very strong and hasn’t missed a cheque at her last 5 runs, add Springvale Shine who loves to track wide and is strong. Box up 1.2.3.6

Race 9 - American Man wasn’t disgraced when 3rd here last week and was doing his usual storming home late, he loves a wide draw and is amongst the main chances. I’m Top Girl has been hit and miss of late on lid rise, she is well drawn and should be at good each way odds and will give this a big shake. Velocity Dory has early pace and is a chance of pinching this if there is trouble behind her early. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 10 - This is the distance of the night and Sir Truculent WINS AGAIN, he is the super star of distance racing here in SA and is a credit to Wally Harkins how well he is going. Miss Bellawood and Miss Takiri for the tri. 5.1.3.7 for a $1

Race 11 - The Murray kennel has been on fire of late and Velocity Bottino went the BON at Murray Bridge last start over the short, she has been racing well and should go very close in this. McLaren Illusion is strong, he only need to within striking distance down the back to run a cheeky race at odds. Box Up 1.4.5.8

Race 12 -  It would be very nice to go home on a winner after a big night of racing and we will stick with Another Storm who ran a handy 2nd here on debut, he should only be improved by the run. Exhilarating is another who can step up, he has drawn well in this and is a must for our Trifecta, add Joes Gold for next best. Box Up 2.4.5.8

The next leg of this series will be the heats of the Classic 2020 Prelude (1) to be run at Angle Park on Monday 21st September.

Please take note on the back of the successful Fridays night meeting at Gawler last week we have fortunately been given times of race 1 - 3.58pm to race 12 - 7.48pm for tomorrow’s meeting. Again this is not a regular thing and has occurred due to the addition of the Bordertown thoroughbreds meeting postponed from last Sunday.

For those trainers that live more than 150 kilometres from Mount Gambier and travel to these meetings they will receive an additional $75 payment to their normal Trainers Fee. The fee will be capped at one payment per registered premises and will continue until the borders are open.

SATURDAY MORNING FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

We recently introduced the fortnightly Saturday morning meeting at Angle Park.

To accommodate this meeting through our weekly schedule we made some changes to the amount of races run during and after this meeting at other venues. We have changed to all G-SIX accept for feature and specific races. We moved the Wednesday meetings to be back to back Straight track and then Angle Park on a 3 week rotation. We have made the Saturday morning meetings Time Graded as this is the biggest group or greyhounds, with programming crucial to accommodate the weekly schedule. The next Saturday morning meeting will be held next week at Angle Park on Saturday 5th September.

ANGLE PARK TRACK MAINTENANCE

Please note that the Angle Park track was lightly spiked and graded on Tuesday to re-establish cambers.

At this stage the plan is to undertake a medium harrow next Tuesday (1/9/20), dependent on the weather forecast which looks good at this stage.

GOTBA COURSING TO START IN SEPTEMBER

Approval has been given by the GRSA Board for GOTBA to conduct three Coursing meetings this year at Virginia.

Following Government advise since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place from earlier in the year GRSA have not been accepting any nominations from trainers domiciled in other States and this remains the case at present.

It is possible for Interstate greyhounds to compete in SA, however, they must be transferred into the kennels of a trainer domiciled in SA.

As the COVID-19 situation can change rapidly, GRSA will continue to update all participants of any changes to racing restrictions.

OAKS AND DERBY ELIGIBILITY IN 2020

The Grader will then have to randomly draw the boxes (1 or 3) that each greyhound starts from. The most prizemoney will be allocated to the highest rated match.

GRSA will also have exclusive footage from inside the boxes of the greyhounds with has been a real highlight in past years.

GRSA conducted the Eastar Match Race series in April where Alfieri won for Bill Wudarczyk in a sizzling 29.54. As part of that series, for winning, Alfieri would be guaranteed a spot as an SA representative in the State Of Origin. Whilst that series has been postponed GRSA will honour this condition with accepting Alfieri as one of the 8 greyhounds for the SA Match Race series so long as he is nominated.

The Murray Bridge slipping track can now be used; those participants that registered their interest can pick up their key fobs from GRSA reception.

Darren at the Murray Bridge Club also has fobs available so please register so you can make use of this facility.

BEANIES NOW AVAILABLE FROM GRSA

Approved Beanie’s are now part of the GRSA Dress Code Policy and available for sale from GRSA.

These Beanies are GRSA specific and are the only ones approved. They cost $10 and are available the GRSA racing office.

GRSA PLAN TO DISSEMINATE SCRATCHINGS IN A MORE TIMELY MANNER

Historically, it has been GRSA’s standard practice to wait until after the appointed scratching time to officially release all the scratchings.

GRSA would not release any scratchings for a meeting until this time. However, in the current climate with many wagering organisations wanting to open markets early on our races, they are not able to do so due to greyhounds potentially being scratched for injury, illness, ineligibility etc. This can affect potential revenue back to the industry with persons not able to invest, or investing and having the market alter when scratchings are finalised. This will also provide greater transparency for trainers, staff and our business.

For a trial period of 3 months it will be GRSA’s intention upon receiving a scratching from a trainer to input this into OzChase at that time, which will then be made public through the GRSA website. Once the greyhound has been scratched by the trainer and made public it is considered as being withdrawn. This is not uncommon practice with other States doing the same thing. For greyhounds that become ineligible for a race meeting due to winning a Maiden event, racing on consecutive days, offending during the run or being injured on the night etc and engaged in another race meeting, GRSA staff will automatically scratch the greyhound (as it is ineligible) at either the completion of the meeting when finalised by the stewards or the next working day. We have always encouraged trainers to scratch these greyhounds that have become ineligible for their next engagements, however, this is not always the case with staff waiting to withdraw them at the appointed time. For trainers in certain circumstances that may wish to appeal an offence with their greyhound engaged in another event then they would be required to flag that intent with the stewards on the day.

The benefits of this change will provide -

  • Transparency across our meetings
  • Correct information in real time
  • Wagering companies can field up to date markets
  • Allows punters to wager with confidence
  • Allows for wagering dollars not to be tied up until after  the ‘All Clear ‘of a race if a selection was scratched

This will take effect from Monday, 24th August 2020.
