TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

The highlight of tonight’s 10 event program is the running of the 2020 John Gray Final in race 8. The field oozes class and if we can go on last week’s heats it will take a cracking time to collect the winner’s cheque of just under $8,000. As always, all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - The Rasmussen team should have a strong night and they can kick of the evening with a winner with the newcomer to their kennels Winlock Huddy, He has won 14 of 50 along with 20 placings and arrives in SA with strong form and looks hard to beat. Instantaneous is better than recent form suggests and can’t be left out of calculations. Box Up 2.3.6.8

Race 2 - This is the 1st of 2 maidens for the night and its certainly looks a wide-open affair. We will go with Step In Style who has had the 1 start for a placing over 450. He hasn’t raced since November last year and is sure to be well tried on debut. Nipper ZSA has short course form and should be put in our First Four. Add Born Lovely and Major Major. Box Up 3.4.5.6

Race 3 - The 2nd of the maidens and tonight must be her night and that is Right Exit! She has had 20 attempts to win her maiden with 12 placings, she is drawn to go close. See You Smile and Chevy Chaser for the minors. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 4 - This is a smart 600 event and the 2 main chances look to be Matty Mateusz and Two Times Twice, they are class acts on their night and should nearly run the Quinella. Unique Edition is drawn to run a cheeky race and is one for the First Fours. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 5 - Emmy Gray will need to show her early dash to win here she loves this draw and should be very handy early. Power Burner and Viking Vince both are last start winners here and should be in the money again on their recent form. Box Up 1.3.6.7

Race 6 - I like one in this at handy odds in Corryong McLaren - he has early pace and might find himself on the lure with early with luck. Worth A Shout will be running on late and can’t be dismissed in a wide open affair. Add Fantastic Flame and My Girl Rocks for the minors. Box Up 3.5.6.8

Race 7 - Diamond Lee has found one better at her past two runs here, she has a good turn of early pace and might be able to pinch this with luck. Sols Buddy found a heap of trouble here last start when unplaced, he is well drawn with moderate beginners on his inside. Box Up 3.4.5.7

Race 8 - the Final of the John Gray and Awesome Catch was very impressive here last week when leading throughout for a slick 29.51 win from box 7. He is racing well and is our top pick. Boss McLaren won from this draw 2 runs back in quick time and looks the main danger. Lagoon Rhett made short work of them last week winning by 6L in 29.79 and is a must for out First Four. Box Up 1.2.4.6

Race 9 - Immediate has very good Melbourne form including a slick 29.33 win at Sandown last start from box 3, he has won 16 of 36 and should take beating in this. Allinga Mal has won 3 of his past 5 he continues to dwell on lid rise but musters quickly. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 10 - The Rasmussen kennel should have a handy night and they can go home on a winner in Lucy’s Otis. He found trouble from this draw last week and still held on to run fourth he is the definite improver. Where’s Sparky has pace along with Lucy’s Nimbus for the placings. Box Up 3.6.7.8

Changes to Mount Gambier Time Grading from January 2020
After consultation with industry and local participants from the Mount Gambier region, GRSA will trial a Best to Worst format for the Mount Gambier Thursday meetings.
GRSA has made this change to accommodate the strong nominations for this venue and attempting to give all greyhounds of all abilities the opportunity to compete.
Conditions for the Best to Worst meetings will be based on the greyhounds Time Rating. There will be a limit of 5 as to how fast a greyhound can be rated. Greyhounds rated 4.75 to 1 will not be eligible for this meeting but will be given preference into the Sunday meeting of that week so long as they nominate and there is a race available. Under this format GRSA will be able to include reserves for all races under the dissection of the grader. The more than 50% of fastest rated greyhound eligibility clause will not refer to Best to Worst Time Graded events.
Please contact the GRSA Grader for further information about Time Graded events.

Local match race series “The SA Eastar” in April
The SA Local Match Race series nicknamed “The SA Eastar” will be held on Thursday night, 9th April (Easter) at Angle Park.
This is the start of School Holidays and Easter so a big crowd would be expected yet again and it will also be another opportunity for some innovation in regard to our coverage.
Eligibility for South Australia local greyhounds will be based around the Nationals conditions. They will need to be trained in SA 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the close of nominations.
Selection for this series will only be based around winning times at Angle Park. For greyhounds that have run over the 515m at Angle Park on any meeting since 1st December, 2019 their fastest winning time will be recognised and put them on the list for selection. GRSA will be producing a list that will be updated regularly so all trainers and connections are aware of where their greyhound stands up until the close of nominations on Monday, 6th April.
Greyhounds will have an opportunity to improve their times by solo trialling on a Thursday night (dates to be determined) over 515m. The greyhounds that will be eligible to trial are those that are ranked within the list (list of around 25 eligible greyhounds). Greyhounds can also get on the listing or improve their time by winning a race event at Angle Park on a Thursday or Monday night over the 515m..
GRSA will require nominations which will close on Monday, 6th April at 9am. The 8 fastest greyhounds nominated based on their time will be selected for the Local Match Race Series. Reserves will be declared like a final based on their time and nomination and if there is a scratching the 9 will go in first to the spot vacated.
The head to head matches will be decided based on the final listing and nominations. Match 1 will be 1 v 4, Match 2 will be 2 v 3, Match 3 will be 5 v 8 and Match 4 will be 6 v 7. There will be no manual selection from the Grader. The top 4 seeded greyhounds will be rewarded with more prizemoney.
The overall winner of the local Match Race series will be guaranteed a spot in the State of Origin Match race series (SA V Vic) in September so long as it is nominated and eligible to represent SA.
Winners of match races –
Match 1 – 1 v 4 $4,500 Match 2 – 2 v 3 $4,000 Match 3 – 5 v 8 $3,500 Match 4 – 6 v 7 $3,000
There will be $500 unplaced money.
Overall SA Eastar winner (based on overall times) - $6,000, second $2,500, third $1,500.

Stewards Notice - Deletion of LR 77
Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) Stewards recently considered the merits of a historical Local Rule remaining in the Rules of Greyhound Racing SA Limited.
LR77(SA) prevented a penalty being placed on a person or a greyhound without an inquiry being conducted in accordance with the Rules. Stewards deemed this Local Rule was both limiting and impractical, and saw little utility in it being retained.
By deleting the Rule, for example, Stewards would have greater scope to act in relation to participants who chose to relinquish their registration rather than face disciplinary action, with the Controlling Body being able to issue a penalty without conducting a full inquiry process. This means that in the most serious of matters, a penalty can be placed upon a person to exclude them from our industry, in order to protect the interests of our sport.
Following a recommendation by the GRSA Stewards and the GRSA Integrity and Welfare Committee, the GRSA Board resolved the deletion of LR77(SA). As a result, GRSA has deleted LR77(SA). This change took effect as of 1 January 2020.
For more information contact the Integrity Department.

GRSA Animal Welfare Alert -  Gastrointestinal Illness

Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) is notifying participants of a recent outbreak interstate of gastrointestinal illness amongst the greyhound population.
Whilst GRSA is not currently aware of any cases in this state, participants are reminded about the need to closely monitor the health of greyhounds in their care and ensure that good kennel hygiene is practised at all times.
Trainers are advised to monitor their greyhounds for the two most common signs of gastroenteritis, those being vomiting and diarrhea. Additional signs to watch for include:
• Dehydration due to fluid loss through vomiting or diarrhea
• Blood in vomit or faeces
• Nausea
• Depression
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
Participants who suspect a greyhound of having any gastrointestinal issues should immediately isolate the greyhound, disinfect their kennels and contact their veterinarian for advice. For more information, please contact the Integrity Department.

Mount Gambier Satisfactory Trials

Trainers are advised of a change to the booking of Satisfactory Trials at Mt. Gambier.
Mt Gambier hold trials on Tuesday and Saturday mornings
with Satisfactory trials ONLY being conducted on Tuesdays and need to be booked with Barry Shepheard from the Club on 0419 824 512.
At Race meetings Satisfactory trials can be done when less than 12 races.  When there are 12 races these can be considered, however, the trainer will not be able to kennel and must take their greyhounds home straight after the trial. These race day trials will also need to be booked through Barry at the Club. GRSA administration staff will NOT accept these bookings and trainers will be directed to contact Barry Shepheard.

Time Graded and Pathway Events

The GRSA Racing Department wishes to advise of an update to the process of allocating reserves for Time Grading (worst-to-best) meetings.
Currently the Time Grading methodology does not allow for the allocation of reserves to the majority of races, therefore increasing the likelihood of reduced field sizes.
Under the new methodology, greyhounds will be grouped into races according to their Time Rating, including the reserves:
•        8 greyhounds for G-SIX racing (6 in the field plus 2 reserves)
•       10 greyhounds for traditional 8 dog racing (8 in the field plus 2 reserves)
A random draw will then be conducted to determine the two reserve greyhounds.
If only one race then reserves as per Time Rating Rankings. This process is demonstrated in a table available on the GRSA website and Kennel Capers.
This change will be implemented for all Time Grading meetings from 1st January, 2020.

Changes to Mount Gambier Time Grading from January 2020
After consultation with industry and local participants from the Mt Gambier region GRSA will trial a Best to Worst format for the Mt Gambier Thursday meetings in January 2020.
With 5 meetings in that month the normal Worst to Best meetings will be on 2nd, 16th and 30th January. The Best to Worst format will be on 9th and 23rd January. GRSA has made this change to accommodate the strong support or nominations for this venue and attempting to give all greyhounds of all abilities the opportunity to compete.
