TELLING THE TAIL

With only the two weeks to Christmas we need to build the bank for our loved ones so we can buy them a special gift (maybe a TAB voucher. We have 12 races on the card tonight and I’m sure we can snag a couple of winners tonight as usual all events are Trifecta and First Four events so let’s hope we finish on the right side of the ledger.

Race 1 - We can kick of the night with the Paul Fagan trained Urana Mustang down in box 1, she has been racing well and was a handy 3rd here last start in good time, she is drawn for a bold showing tonight. Shanlyn Haven flew here last start when a 30.09 winner, she has been racing in terrific form of late and will be running on. Gold Flyer continues to fill a place, she has to win one soon as she has been in the money at her last 13 starts. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 2 - I picked him last week on his debut and that was Victa Kurt, he finished 2nd behind kennel mate Victa Emma and can only improve from his draw tonight. Spring Driven has been well supported at her three runs, she obviously has shown plenty of ability on the trial track and must be kept safe. Add Spring Lilac for the minors. Box up 1.2.4.8

Race 3 - This is a wide-open affair, Adios McLaren should jump the favourite but will be too short for mine, he is hit and miss and I like him to run a place. Missing Grace is knocking on the door, he has a good turn of early pace and with moderate beginners on his inside he gets his chance. Pyrotechnic is well boxed and is amongst the main hopes. Box Up 1.2.5.7

Race 4 - This is the 1st of our two 600m tonight and its very hard to tip against Dashing Mickey, she has been struggling of late but should be the BIG improver here, she loves this trip and the kennel is starting to hit form. Victa Jess and Salt And Pepper can't be left out. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 5 - Select Hypo has been racing well here without winning, she has been placed here in her last three starts and gets her chance from the wide draw. McLaren Dazzler is a strong type, he made good ground when 2nd over this trip last start and is amongst the main chances. Add Zambezi Icon for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.5.8

Race 6 - I like one in this at each way odds in Springvale Anna, she was a last start winner here over the 600m in quick time, she is back to the sprint tonight and is amongst the main chances. Defy is another who is dropping back in distance he is a strong type and with clear running would take beating. American Man has been racing well and we can’t leave him out of contentions. Box up 1.5.7.8

Race 7 - Winning form is good form and Classic McLaren has won his past two in good fashion, the Tania Foster trained chaser won here and followed up with an all the way win at Murray Bridge, he is drawn for a forward showing once again. Velocity Bottino and Curiouser both have claims and are a must for our First Four. Box Up 2.4.5.8

Race 8 - This is a very strong affair that has several chances, we will go with Spring Burner who has won three out of his last four all at this venue, he has pace and is very strong. Jack’s Well is another with three from his last four and has risen through the ranks very quickly, the inside draw will help and he is the big danger. Blister and Toora Ziggy who will be storming home for the minors. Box up 2.5.7.8

Race 9 - Hukanui Lady is in the powerful Rasmussen kennel, she has been placed here at both her runs in the city, she has strong Murray Bridge form and gets her chance to salute down in town tonight. Like A Librarian is an ex Victorian who has wins at Gawler and Murray Bridge since crossing the border, he can be hit and miss on lid rise but I expect improvement from the rails draw. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 10 - This is the distance affair of the night and Angry Trip flew late over the sprint here last start to be beaten a nostril by Lenny The Jet, he had terrific form here prior over this trip and will give this a big shake. Miss Bellawood was a good even effort when 2nd behind Line Seeker here last week, she is the danger. Victa Norman can add some value to the Trifecta. Box up 1.2.6.8

Race 11 - Chief Sebon gets his chance to return to the winner’s circle tonight, he will find this a lot easier than his recent starts when racing against very strong company, he has the pace to lead and looks a good thing. Peter Lee can run into the placings along with Rogue Planet who will be running on late from his wide draw. Box up 1.2.5.7

Race 12 - Ben Rawlings has Spofforth flying at the moment, he has won eight from his last nine starts and there is no reason he can’t continue his hot form. Private is a pacey type, he won from this draw five runs back in 30.04 and is the danger. Sky Wesley is my roughie of the night he is better than form suggests and will be a huge odd. Box Up 1.2.4.8

SHADOW MIST LOOKING TO CREATE HISTORY IN GROUP 1 HOBART THOUSAND TONIGHT

Star SA sprinter Shadow Mist trainer by Lauren Harris was brilliant in qualifying last week for tonight’s Group 1 Hobart Thousand final. The son of Dyna Double One and Diva’s Shadow had to show all his class and courage as he railed hard in the home straight to claim victory in the heats running a flying 25.88 in winning by ½ lengths. No doubt he will improve on that effort and do SA proud however he will have to create history for SA.

Shadow Mist is racing to be only the fourth SA greyhound in history to win the time honoured Hobart Thousand. Previous SA winners were Silver Rover (1940) and Cavalry (1941) for Wally Lake and Erin’s Ace for A. Davis in 1949, so it will have been 71 years since the last SA win.

Good luck to Lauren, Ryan and all connections.

BOXING BACK TO NORMAL

GRSA advise with restrictions being lifted quickly in SA that we are back to normal for boxing procedures for ALL meetings. This will mean greyhounds will be loaded in two waves for all races. GRSA still reminds trainers about social distancing criteria and advise we could revert back to restricted boxing if the current COVID climate changes.

MURRAY BRIDGE OAKS AND DERBY TO BE REPROGRAMMED

The 2020 AGRC/Murray Bridge Country Summer Derby and Oaks Features at Murray Bridge were to be run tomorrow; however, we did not receive sufficient nominations to run both events. GRSA in consultation with the race sponsor, the Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club have decided to reprogram at a date and time to be advised. They will also look at the conditions of these events based around the lack of nominations received.

GREYHOUNDS AUSTRALASIA CLOSING OVER CHRISTMAS

GRSA have been advised that the Greyhounds Australasia Office will be closed from 24th December 2020 through to 4th January 2021.

A reminder also that the DNA lab in New Zealand will be closed from the 18th December through to the 4th January. All emails and requests will be actioned upon their return to the office on Monday 4th January 2021.

Please ensure you are aware of the times and that you are prepared during this period.

7AM START FOR ANGLE PARK TRIALS ON SUNDAYS

GRSA advise that when Angle Park trial on Sundays they will now start at 7am instead of 8am with bookings taken as per normal.

CURRENT GRADING OF RACE MEETINGS (G-SIX – 8 dog fields)

Current grading of meetings for Angle Park, Murray Bridge and Gawler are on a G-SIX program, there will however be some 8 dog Quad programmed, this will vary based on the nominations across each meeting and the weekly schedule. If GRSA believe a meeting is struggling we will revert to G-SIX across venues and consider the number of races conducted. GRSA will be nimble in this space to ensure our weekly schedule is supported. From the GRP meeting it was agreed that GRSA would try and run G-SIX or 8 dog quad for all races that are the same grade rather than having one race of Grade 5, 8 dogs and the other G-SIX.

Mount Gambier sits separately to this at present.

Feature races and series will still be conducted as 8 dog events along with middle distance and staying events under the previously advised criteria.

MOUNT GAMBIER TO RACE TWICE A WEEK FROM JANUARY - Resumption of Normal Weekly Race Schedule

GRSA are delighted that the border restrictions with Victoria have been lifted and we can get some much needed movement across the border with Victoria.  With Victorian trainers now eligible to nominate this will allow the resumption of two weekly race meetings per week at Mount Gambier with both Thursday and Sunday meetings being included in the Sky schedule from the beginning of January 2021.

The Thursday meetings will be Time Graded events (Maidens, 1-4 wins and 5 + wins) and the Sunday meetings will be the normal Graded meetings.

With the resumption of two weekly meetings from the beginning of January 2021, GRSA will revert the prizemoney levels at Mount Gambier back to the current Category 3 levels with a movement back to 6-SIX across both meetings where possible

MOUNT GAMBIER 305M START - UPDATE

Good progress is being made on the new 305m race start at Mt Gambier with things really starting to take shape on-site. The Club is on track to have the start operational for trialling before Christmas.

As the new start will utilise the set of boxes currently being used as the 277m/732m start, the project will require the refurbishment of an old set of Victorian boxes that are being stored on-site, to be used as the 732m start.

Given the track only has one operational set of boxes spare until this refurbishment, the changeover from 277m to 305m racing will result in a short period of 3-4 weeks in which neither 277m or 305m racing can occur (305m trials will be operational in this period).

GRSA is hoping that the refurbishment of the 732m boxes will be finalised and the start up and running by early February, which will mean a 7-8 week period without the staying trip.

The current project schedule as it stands is as follows (subject to change):

·      20th December – Last meeting with 277m racing, temporary halt to 732m racing

·      23rd December – 305m trials to commence

·      14th January – 305m racing to commence

·      11th February – 732m racing to resume

This schedule will result in the following:

  • No 277m, 305m or 732m racing for the period 21st December to 14th January (3.5 weeks)
  • No 732m racing for the period 21st December to 11th February (7.5 weeks)

Any changes to this schedule will be communicated to the industry via the normal channels.

MT GAMBIER 277M TO 305M
The same conditions introduced for 277m racing at Mt Gambier will be the same for the 305m journey.

There will only be two 305m races, one for young Maiden greyhounds with the youngest greyhounds gaining entry first based on age. There will also be a Masters 305m with eligible greyhounds being selected on age with the oldest given first preference. Masters conditions is the same as races conducted in the Metro area with greyhounds 3¾ years and above eligible.

The 305m events will be conducted on the Mt Gambier Sunday meetings only. Time Grading meetings will not have the 305m journey considered.

GRSA strongly recommends trainers nominate for multiple distances to ensure they do not miss out on a run at any meeting.

SOME ITEMS FROM GRP

The items below come from the recent Grading Review Panel meeting with an implementation date advised. There are other items from the meeting that are currently in the process of being changed and an implementation date will then be determined.

Mixed Masters – Grading

It was recommended to the panel that if a Mixed Masters is programmed the Grade 5 dogs will be mixed if there is Grade 4 and Grade 3 dogs linking together like normal grading. If there are Grade 2 and 3 dogs and then Grade 5 dogs only a Grade 5 Masters will be conducted under normal conditions as these cannot be linked. If there is enough to run a high grade Mixed Masters (ie Grade 2/3 & 4) we will do that and not include Grade 5 unless they nominate specifically for this programmed event. Effective immediately

Policy Interstate Greyhounds - Summary of change’s for the greyhounds career

Interstate greyhounds racing in SA for the first time will be Grade 5 at all tracks and distances, unless they meet the following criteria, which would then see them, being upgraded to Grade 4 at all tracks and distances:

  • 5+ metropolitan full stakes wins
  • $75,000 in prizemoney

Interstate greyhounds racing in SA for the first time and meet the following criteria, will be upgraded to Grade 3 at all tracks and distances:

  • Group 1 & 2 winners over a similar distance in the past 6 months

The grader has ultimate discretion in applying the above upgrade rule, and may choose to keep a greyhound at Grade 5 level if one or more of the following apply:

  • The form of the greyhound is poor enough to warrant it remaining at Grade 5
  • The greyhound is a masters greyhound (4yo+)
  • The distance the greyhound is nominating for is outside the greyhound’s normal distance range

Greyhounds that have left SA to race interstate to race for 3 months or more, will be subject to the above upgrade rules upon their return. However any grade that was established at a particular track and distance prior to their departure from SA will be retained in the last 6 months.

This will replace the greyhounds winning a Metro Grade policy for assessment in SA.

This will not affect the Grade 6 policy

Effective from nominations closing on Monday 4th January 2021

TRANSITION TO ONLINE NOMINATIONS

GRSA has been extremely appreciative of ICG panelist, Christine Costa, who has made herself available and spoken to those trainers needing some guidance with the online process over the last few weeks. She has gone out of her way to assist her fellow participants and now GRSA will be in touch shortly to assist with the processes they require.

The ICG and GRP panel members are happy to assist any trainer who requires some assistance in transitioning; along with GRSA staff, so please do not hesitate to contact any person as the process is reasonably straight forward.
